Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac puts it in drive. Plymouth automobile dealership teams up against hunger to support local food pantries

October 31, 2012 //  by admin

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac teams up with the South Shore Community Action Council for a food drive to help supply local food pantries with much needed inventory for the holidays.

PLYMOUTH, MA…

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac has partnered with the South Shore Community Action Council (SSCAC) on a canned food drive at the dealership’s 137 Samoset Street (Route 44) in Plymouth. The drive will take place during the month of November and all donated goods will go to SSCAC’s Greater Plymouth Food Warehouse, which provides food free of charge to more than 30 emergency food pantries and soup kitchens in the greater Plymouth area

“There’s no better way to express gratitude for what you have by helping out those who have not been as fortunate,” said Jeff Tracy, president of Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac. “With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we wanted to do something for families in the area who are having a tough time. We encourage everybody to stop by the dealership and make a contribution to the drive.”

The food drive tubs are located in the Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac showroom at 137 Samoset Street. Canned goods and other non-perishables are welcomed and accepted.

“We can’t thank Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac enough for hosting this food drive as our shelves are almost empty,” said Beth Thompson, Food Resources Manager at South Shore Community Action Council. “The greater Plymouth area has grown quite a bit in recent years. While that’s good on one hand, it also has meant that more people are in need of our services. That’s why we truly appreciate when a business like Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac teams up to help out.”

That kind of generosity is nothing new for Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac. Since its founding in 1992, the dealership has been involved in a number of charitable endeavors. That includes supporting The Driven Student Recognition for students at Plymouth North and South High Schools, the Boys & Girls Clubs, and many more.

For more information on Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac, visit www.tracymotors.com. To learn more about the South Shore Community Action Council, visit their website at www.sscac.org.

So easy at Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac

For more than 80 years and three generations of dealers, the Tracy family has made it so easy for customers on the South Shore and greater Plymouth area to purchase new and used automobiles. Since its beginnings in 1992, Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac has emphasized first-rate customer service and straightforward, bottom-line pricing with fair trade-ins every time–without the games or gimmicks you find at other dealerships. For more information on new and used trucks and automobiles, you can go to www.tracymotors.com or stop by the dealership, conveniently located at 137 Samoset Street, just off exit 6 on Route 3. For more information, or to make a service appointment, you can also call (800) 640-2884.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa Physicians Diagnose 17 New Cases of Skin Cancer During Recent Free Screening Clinic

June 18, 2012 //  by admin

South Shore Skin Center and Spa providers alert South Shore and Plymouth county residents of the growing number of skin cancer cases in the area and urge precaution.

At the free Skin Cancer Screening Clinic held at Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center (held in May, which is National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Awareness Month), Ramzi W. Saad, M.D., board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center and Spa discovered two potential cases of melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer and 15 cases of basal cell carcinoma.

According to Dr. Saad, “The incidence of skin cancer is increasing in this area. During a free screening we held last year, we found four cases of melanoma. At this year’s screening we found two potential cases of melanoma along with a surprising 15 basal cell cases, which is evidence many people still are not taking the proper precautions against UV exposure. Sunscreen must be worn daily and tanning booths/beds should be avoided at all costs.”

He continued, “Melanoma can quickly spread to organs and other areas of the body. Early detection is imperative. Basal cell carcinoma is a less aggressive form of skin cancer that does not typically spread throughout the body, but can cause disfigurement if it is near the nose, eye or ear.”

Mohs Micrographic Surgery is often recommended in the treatment of skin cancer.

Dr. Saad explained, “Mohs Micrographic Surgery is special skin cancer surgery that is very precise and removes the least amount of tissue to rid the cancer with the highest cure rates – in particular near the eyes, nose, lips, fingers and toes. This type of surgery is used to treat basal and squamous cell carcinomas as well as melanoma. It is ideal for instances of recurring cancer, large or ill-defined areas of cancer and areas where growth is rapid.”

The skin cancer screenings that were conducted at the clinic included an assessment of sun spots and moles. Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, founder and Executive Director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation (based in Hingham) was on hand with the skin analyzer, which shows UV-damage to the skin that is not visible to the naked eye. Patients were also provided with sun safety and melanoma prevention tips. The free screening was supported by the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Cancer Society.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s physicians remind adults and children to follow these important measures in the prevention of skin cancer:

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Avoid sunlamps and tanning booths/beds.
Use ample amounts of sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even if it is cloudy.
Wear protective clothing and large framed or wrap-around sunglasses to protect the eye area.
Have your skin checked by a dermatologist regularly.
Note any moles or other spots on the skin that have changed. Have them checked by a physician as soon as possible.

Governor Takes Bite Out of Elder Meals Program – Nearly 250,000 meals cut

January 27, 2012 //  by admin

Elder advocates reacted with surprise this week in response to Governor Deval Patrick’s proposed 24% cut in the state’s meals program for elders.

“This is literally taking food off the table for older people,” explained Al Norman, Executive Director of Mass Home Care. “This is one of the most visible and popular senior programs in the state. We never would have predicted a cut in such a key service.”

The Governor’s budget slashes the elder nutrition program line item (account 9110-1900) by $1.5 million – from the FY 2012 level of $6.325 million to $4.81 million in FY 2013. This would leave elder nutrition funding for 2013 lower than it was 7 years ago in 2006 under Governor Mitt Romney ( at $5.237 million).

According to Mass Home Care, the loss of funding will cut nearly a quarter of a million meals in 2013. Total meals served under this line item to seniors will plummet from 996,000 meals in 2012 to 754,000 meals in 2013 – a loss of 242,000 fewer meals.

“Old Colony Elder Services estimates its share of the impact would be $75,000 that will cause a reduction of more than 12,000 meals across its service area of 23 communities in the greater Brockton and Plymouth county areas” said Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of Old Colony Elder Services.

The elder nutrition program is one of several meals programs available for seniors in the state, funded by federal and state monies. A total of 8.8 million meals will be served in FY 2012 counting all senior meals programs. Norman said elder nutrition groups have begun assessing how to best get the lost meals funding restored on Beacon Hill; “I am certain the Governor’s people did not expect us to walk away from the table knowing a quarter of a million meals were being cut.”

Together We Win! First-ever Old Sandwich Road Race a success from start to finish.

June 10, 2010 //  by admin

Old Sandwich Road Race Director Craig Valentine Brenner congratulates Half Marathon winner Chris Mahoney.

PLYMOUTH, MA…

The very premise of a race is that there are winners and then the rest of the field. With the first ever Old Sandwich Road Race, which took place Sunday, June 6, everybody won. Okay, that’s perhaps a glass-is-half-full look, but it’s difficult to argue with the success of the first-year race, part of which took place on America’s oldest road—Old Sandwich Road in Plymouth.

Chris Mahoney of Haverhill, a former Plymouth resident and 1996 graduate of Plymouth South High School won the Men’s Half Marathon with a time of 1:16:53. Kim Mendell of Concord, Massachusetts won the Women’s Half Marathon with a time of 1:32:50—both won $200 for their victory. The winners for the Entergy Pilgrim10K were Wesley Gardner of South Boston for the men (39:35) and Heather Barna of Somerville (46:27), with each winning $100.

Today, Race Director Craig Brenner announced the top three finishers in each race and the first finisher in each age group will be invited back to show their stuff in the 2011 race and receive a complimentary bib number.

Here are the top three finishers for each race, men’s and women’s:

Men’s Half Marathon:

  1. Chris Mahoney, age 32, Haverhill, MA, 1:16:53
  2. Stephen Infascelli, age 31, Plymouth, MA,  1:24:22
  3. Bob Ruel, age 57, Whitman, MA 1:25:27

 Women’s Half Marathon:

  1. Kim Mendell, age 33, Concord, MA, 1:32:50
  2. Shannon Knight, age 37, Boston, MA,  1:36:16
  3. Adrienne Bolger, age 23, Cambridge, MA, 1:39:19

 Men’s 10k:

  1. Wesley Gardner, age 25, South Boston, MA, 39:35
  2. George Marr, age 35, East Greenwich, RI,  41:15
  3. Michael Paul, age 50, Plymouth, MA   44:40

 Women’s 10k

  1. Heather Barna, age 39, Somerville, MA, 46:27
  2. Margaret Hallowell, age 45, Boston, MA, 46:39
  3. Erin Porter, age 31, Duxbury, MA, 47:29

“Congratulations to our winners and everybody who competed in the first Old Sandwich Road Race, including all the children who ran in the Kids Classic,” said Craig Valentine Brenner, race director for the Old Sandwich Road Race. “It may sound cliché, but there were far more victories and winners in this race than the runners who crossed the line first. For a first-year race to come together the way this did, everybody is a winner.”

Some of the significant highlights of the first Old Sandwich Road Race include:

  • 550 registered participants in both races; 14 in the Kids Classic.
  • Demographics of runners – in addition to runners from the South Shore and greater Boston area, the Old Sandwich Road Race included runners from Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island  and Western Massachusetts, Germany, Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
  • Strong representation from local sponsors–Entergy, Bayside Runner, the Village Racquet & Fitness Club at the Pinehills, Governor Bradford Inn and Radius Health Partners.

“Based on what we learned this year, I think we set the stage for next year’s race, taking one step further towards the Old Sandwich Road Race being a destination race for seasoned runners looking for a challenging course and a fun place to spend a weekend and visit local attractions, hotels, restaurants and other businesses,” said Brenner.

One hundred percent of the profits from the Old Sandwich Road Race will go to The Home for Little Wanderers’ Baird Center School in Plymouth. The Baird Center School is a year-round residential and day school treatment program for youth aged 10-18 with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, educational and psychiatric issues. Adding yet another historical element to the Old Sandwich Road Race, The Home for Little Wanderers is the nation’s oldest non-profit child and family service agency, with roots dating back to 1799.

Originally a trail used by the Wampanoag Native American tribe, Old Sandwich Road later became the nation’s first true public road and a stagecoach route to ferry passengers and mail back and forth between the Massachusetts towns of Plymouth and Sandwich. Today, the road remains pretty much as the Pilgrims left it–a wide, scenic, dirt road bordered by beautiful tall pine trees and towering oaks.

You can visit the Old Sandwich Road Race Web site at http://www.oldsandwichroadrace.com. The Old Sandwich Road Race also has pages on Facebook and Twitter. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring next year’s race, please contact Craig Valentine Brenner at 617-680-4230 or info@oldsandwichroadrace.com.
