The Diabetes Self-Management Program will be held on Wednesdays, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. beginning January 28, 2015 through March 4, 2015. Setting weekly goals, making an action plan, giving feedback and sharing experiences are a significant part of each workshop session,” explained Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of OCES.

This is a free workshop. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, contact Donna-Marie Forand at 508-584-1561, extension 237.

Have Diabetes? Boston Podiatrists Offer Foot Care Tips

July 8, 2013 //  by admin

People who have been diagnosed with Diabetes are at greater risk for infection from an injury to the foot, even if that injury is minor, such as a scrape.

Boston Common Podiatry’s Jordana Szpiro, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and Shannon Thompson, D.P.M. offer the following tips to people affected by diabetes:

-Inspect feet and between the toes daily, checking for: dry or cracking skin, corns and calluses, any unusual lesions, discolored or thick nails. Those with Type I or Type II Diabetes who may be experiencing any of these symptoms are at risk for infection and should see a primary care physician or podiatrist immediately for treatment.

-Check shoes and socks for foreign objects before putting them on. A minor scrape incurred by a pebble in the shoe is a major health concern for people with diabetes as there is a risk of infection. A person with diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage) is at even greater risk for infection from a scrape because s/he would not be able to feel they have an injury.

-Check the temperature of soaking or bath water with the hands first to avoid scalding. A minor burn can turn into an open wound and become infected.

-Wear white socks only because the dyes in colored socks can be toxic if absorbed into open wounds and cause infection.

-Have shoes sized and fit by a professional. Shoes that are too large will allow the foot to move within the shoe and chafe the skin. Shoes that are too small can pinch the feet and cause blisters, which may become infected.

-Be aware of any changes in sensation or circulation. Numbness or tingling in the feet may be a sign of neuropathy due to elevated glucose levels over a significant period of time.

– People with diabetes should not cut their own toenails. Again, the risk of cutting nails incorrectly (resulting in ingrown toenails), cutting nails too short, or of nicking the skin is significant. Have a podiatrist do it.

If there is a sign that there is something wrong, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist immediately.

Boston Common Podiatry treats a large number of senior and Medicare patients. The setting is a private; there is no wait time and no referral needed.

For more information, visit the website at www.BostonCommonPodiatry.com or contact the office at 617-262-2266.

Mass Bay Spine & Sport of Marshfield Launches Medical Gym

June 10, 2013 //  by admin

Courtney Boynton, ATC

Mass Bay Spine & Sport Physical Therapy (MBSSPT) an orthopedic outpatient physical therapy practice in Marshfield has recently launched a new Medical Gym to help patients with health issues better manage their conditions and improve their overall health.

Located within MBSSPT’s expanded space at 506 Plain Street, the Medical Gym is designed for patients with risk factors such as diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease and other health issues who are serious about a personalized program that will help them better manage and improve their health. MBSSPT practitioners utilize exercise, behavior modification and nutrition to help patients obtain and maintain wellness. Courtney Boynton, a Certified Athletic Trainer, will oversee the Medical Gym.

Four key elements differentiate MBSSPT’s Medical Gym: all patients receive medical oversight; the practitioners communicate with the patient’s physician; patients are guided by credentialed experts in exercise physiology and kinesiology (body movement) and there is greater accountability with regard to successful outcome.

The Medical Gym offers a custom program with a limited number of memberships. There are two options for membership – a month-to-month membership or a close-guided, 12-week session membership.

“Our Medical Gym programs help patients accomplish the goals of strength, weight loss and better movement. Our equipment is functional so members won’t be overwhelmed. It’s all about engaging the entire body in good movement patterns. Our programs are affordable, and our closely-guided program, in particular, costs less than one massage per week,” explained Brendan Carman, MPT, ATC, founder.

He continued, “This isn’t your typical ‘muscle’ gym and we’re not your typical personal trainers. We design a custom program for each patient and our certified, expert Athletic Trainers provide on-going guidance which ensures a successful outcome.”

For more information, contact (781) 319-0024 or email Courtney@massbayspineandsport.com to inquire.

Mass Bay Spine & Sport Physical Therapy Advises a Slow & Steady Shape Up to Avoid Injury

May 6, 2013 //  by admin

Brendan Carman, MPT, Director of Rehabilitation
Spring is the season when many people renew their fitness goals. According to Brendan Carman, MPT, Director of Rehabilitation at Mass Bay Spine & Sport Physical Therapy (MBSSPT), getting back into shape is a process that shouldn’t be rushed. Jumping into a fitness program or class after a significant exercise hiatus of more than three months, could cause serious injury.

Carman, who is a Physical Therapist and certified Athletic Trainer at MBSSPT explained that exercise-induced injuries occur when a person tries to do too much, too quickly to attain fitness goals. The most common injuries are:

Achilles tendonitis and other foot/ankle injuries. Achilles tendon injuries often occur with running or sudden stopping and starting movements in sports such as tennis and basketball.

Knee pain: weak and/or deconditioned muscles in your legs don’t provide the necessary support to the joints to maintain proper alignment. This can result in excessive loading of the joints with higher level activities causing increased wear and tear, inflammation, and pain.

Back pain, often the result of weak abdominal and back stabilizing muscles, can be exacerbated by high impact activities or those involving significant bending, twisting, or lifting.

“We have seen an increase in the number of clients coming into our clinic to be treated for muscle/joint strains after initiating a new exercise program like Zumba classes or Cross Fit training. As we age, especially beyond our thirties and forties, our bodies become more susceptible to injury and recovery time takes longer. It takes time for the body and muscles to get used to new movement and new challenges,” said Carman.

He continued, “The problem is that many people decide they want to get back in shape but they want to get it back immediately. They throw themselves into a running or exercise program full steam ahead, and end up with an Achilles tendon rupture, rotator cuff injury or other injury that puts them completely out of commission. There are so many great options for getting healthy and stronger, but none of them can help if you end up sidelined with a preventable injury.”

Mass Bay Spine & Sport advises that prevention is the key. Listen to the body and get back into shape gradually, without injury. Start slowly with a walking program followed by stretching. Obtain guidance on an exercise program from a medical professional.

Boston Podiatrists Offer Healthy Feet Tips for Seniors

March 20, 2013 //  by admin

Maintaining foot health is especially important in those over 55 years of age.

Dr. Jordana Szpiro, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S. and Dr. Shannon Thompson, D.P.M., podiatrists at Boston Common Podiatry offer the following tips to seniors:

1. Inspect your feet and between the toes daily checking for: dry or cracking skin, corns and calluses, any unusual lesions, discolored or thick nails

2. Clean and moisturize daily.

3. Check your shoe size yearly. If the arch collapses or the foot widens shoes that are too tight or not supportive enough can lead to foot pain, ingrown toenails or painful corns

4. Warning signs something may be wrong:

-Burning, tingling or dulled sensation

-Open sores that appear for no reason

-Delayed healing of wounds

-Foot or leg pain after walking short distances

-Discoloration of feet or toes

5. Diabetic foot care tips:

-Check your shoes and socks for foreign objects before putting them on

-Check temperature of soaking or bath water with the hands first to make avoid scalding.

-Wear white socks only because the dyes in colored socks can be toxic if absorbed into open wounds and cause infection.

-Have shoes sized and fit by a professional

-Be aware of any changes in sensation or circulation

According to Dr. Szpiro, “If you notice a warning sign, don’t wait. Some warning signs that exhibit in the feet can indicate a more serious health issue. Schedule an appointment with your podiatrist as soon as possible.”

Boston Common Podiatry treats a large number of senior and Medicare patients. They prefer Boston Common Podiatry’s private setting to a clinical environment and the fact that there is no wait time and no referral needed.

Aging Parent Needs Assistance? Right At Home Advises of the Top 10 Signs and Online Assessment Tool

December 15, 2011 //  by admin

Libet Callahan, RN, BSN, president of the South Shore office of Right at Home

Holiday visit or wellness check? The answer is both. The holidays are often a time for happy reunions with aging parents, aunts and uncles who you haven’t seen in months or perhaps even years. A holiday visit is the perfect time to assess how your loved one is doing because you are able to look for visual clues indicating signs of decline that you would not be able to glean through a telephone call.

Libet Callahan, RN, BSN, president of the South Shore office of Right at Home, providers of non-medical in-home care services to seniors and disabled adults throughout the South Shore, advises family members of the 10 signs to watch for that are a cause for concern:

Weight loss

Not maintaining his/her personal appearance and hygiene

Not remembering when to take medication and not knowing what condition each medication is treating

Not eating nutritious meals or not eating at all

Food in the refrigerator or on the shelves that is past its expiration date or molding

Not maintaining the home by doing chores such as cleaning bathrooms, washing floors or regular vacuuming

Not paying bills – unpaid or unopened piles of bills are a red flag

Not taking proper care of a pet

Avoiding or having difficulty ascending/descending steps

Limiting contact with or lacking an interest in the outside world

According to Ms. Callahan, “Ultimately, a single, isolated sign doesn’t necessarily mean your loved one is in trouble. Sometimes you can just feel a change in a person even if you can’t articulate it. If there are numerous signs and you believe that your loved one may be having difficulty, you need to address it with your loved one and other close family members. Your aging loved one may be in need of a number of services – from companionship to personal care and homemaking – and Right at Home can help.”

Single-service care options such as meals-on-wheels or an adult daycare may be enough. But, oftentimes a multi-service provider such as Right At Home is needed to provide the companion, homemaker and personal care services that enable seniors and those with disabilities to remain in the comfort of their home for as long as possible.

If you have concerns about a family member, take Right At Home’s online Care Assessment by visiting http://www.rightathome.net/southshore/. For questions or more information, contact Right At Home at 781-681-3545.
