Loads of caring. Mass. Lapels Dry Cleaning customers show generosity in clothing drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister

Each year, Lapels Dry Cleaning stores across the country host clothing drives to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister organizations.  With seven states participating in this year’s drive, held May 2 to May 17, customers donated 8875 pounds of clothes at Massachusetts stores (Lapels Dry Cleaning of Cohasset customers donated the most at 1725 pounds);  11565 overall. That has a value of $11,565 or a $1 per pound.

As impressive as the weight of the clothes might be, what it represents to Big Brothers Big Sisters organizations is the real value of the drive. The clothes donated will be resold at various thrift shops and other second hand clothing stores, helping to fund Big Brothers Big Sisters programs in Arizona, Connecticut, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Jersey and Rhode Island.

“This annual event has benefitted hundreds of people involved in the Big Brother/Big Sister organization across the country,” said Steven Beck, executive director Big Brother Big Sister Foundation. “We can’t thank Lapels Dry Cleaning enough for putting this annual drive together and to their customers for their generous donations.”

Georgia CALLS Sponsors SAFFT 5K Event on July 11th

Georgia CALLS, the Georgia Center For Abundant Living Life Skills, a unique 501(c)3 non-profit helping high-risk, returning citizens make a successful transition from incarceration back into society as business entrepreneurs, is a proud sponsor of “Color Outside the Lines 5K” to benefit foster and adoptive children and families in crisis.

The Color Outside the Lines 5K will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 8 a.m. at Cumming Fairgrounds, 235 Castleberry Road, Cumming, GA. It is presented by Supporting Adoption & Foster Families Together (SAFFT), a 501(c)3 non-profit that protects children, rebuilds families and empowers caregivers.

The event is for all ages. Participants will enjoy an exciting, timed 5K in a safely designed course inside the fairgrounds, complete with music and color throws. There will be an after party, with awards presented for first, second and third place for each age group as well as a giant paint throw to round out the event.

Georgia CALLS will have an informational tent on-site with giveaways so attendees can learn more about how their program is transforming mindsets, growing leaders and building entrepreneurs, one life at a time.  Community awareness surrounding this reentry initiative is a key component to building better communities and creating safer neighborhoods.

The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island (CSRI) recently named Dr. Clive Bridgham as “Chiropractic Physician of the Year” at its board of directors meeting last month. Dr. Bridgham is a licensed chiropractic physician and the owner of Barrington Chiropractic and Sports Medicine Clinic, 282 County Road, Barrington, Rhode Island.

“Dr. Bridgham is a very deserving winner of Chiropractic Physician of the Year honors,” said Dr. Michael Gottfried, current president of CSRI and a chiropractor at Aquidneck Chiropractic of Middletown. “He has been a tireless advocate of chiropractic both at his practice and in the community. We’re proud to have him amongst our ranks as a member of CSRI.”

A former president of CSRI, Dr. Bridgham has given testimony and met with elected officials at the Rhode Island state house to advocate chiropractic awareness and improve the health and wellness of the citizens of Rhode Island.

Dr. Bridgham is a Diplomate of the American Chiropracticin Board of Sports’ Physicians. He has been a part of a number of medical treatment teams for international competitions in surfing, skiing, and the X-Games over his 25 years as a chiropractor, and has served as a physician for the United States Surfing, Windsurfing and Biathalon teams . Most recently, Dr. Bridgham was the chief medical officer for a rugby tournament in Newport, with more than 100 athletes from middle and high school teams from Rhode I, Massachusetts and Connecticut competing.

Old Colony Elder Services Announces Merger with Mayflower RSVP

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the Brockton based regional agency serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Brockton and Plymouth County, has acquired the Mayflower Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).  As of April 1, 2015, the Mayflower RSVP is integrated with OCES’ Community Programs.

Mayflower RSVP was founded 41 years ago with the mission of helping adults age 55 and older remain active and healthy by providing them with volunteer opportunities in their communities. The organization has operated with grants from the U.S. federal agency Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and has several hundred volunteers working with service partner organizations. Recently OCES was awarded a three-year grant from CNCS to operate the RSVP of Plymouth County concentrating on focus areas including Economic Opportunity, Education, Veteran and Military Families, and Healthy Futures.

OCES has run its own volunteer programs for many years and has also been a service partner of Mayflower RSVP for the last few years with volunteers in OCES’ Nutrition Program and Money Management Program. The two organizations that share similar missions and philosophies, have been working to transition staff and systems for the last six months.

“Our goals are to further develop the RSVP within the OCES framework, expand opportunities for volunteers of all ages, and deepen relationships with service partners throughout the area,” explained Darcy H. Lee, Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Mayflower RSVP (whose title will become OCES’ Volunteer Program Manager and Mayflower RSVP Project Director).

“Volunteers are essential to our organization.  We embrace this exciting development and look forward to working with businesses and citizens throughout the greater Plymouth County area to expand opportunities and promote volunteerism,” said Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of OCES.

New Jersey may have the nickname of “The Garden State” but many Ocean Staters enjoy the delights of a backyard garden, too. For many, tending to a garden can create more than just a bountiful dinner table. It can include back pain. To that end, Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island offers some quick tips to keep your back sound for gardening throughout the summer.

While stretching is key, the key to a good stretch is breathing. Breathe out and in slowly and rhythmically as you stretch. You want to stretch as far and as comfortably as you can but not to the point of pain. That said, here are some basic stretches to do before gardening:

  • While sitting, prop your heel on a stool or step, keeping your knees straight. Lean forward until you feel a stretch in the back of your thigh, or the hamstring muscle. Hold this stretch for 15 seconds, then do it once more and repeat with your other leg.
  • Stand up, balance yourself, and grab the front of your ankle from behind. Pull your heel towards your buttocks and hold for 15 seconds. Do this again and repeat with your other leg.
  • Standing, weave your fingers together above your head with the palms up and then lean to one side for 10 seconds and then to the other. Do this stretch three times to each site.
  • Do the “Hug your best friend” stretch. Wrap your arms around yourself and rotate to one side, stretching as far as you can comfortably go. Hold for 10 seconds and reverse. Repeat two or three times.

“These stretches are great as a warm up, but once you start gardening, you need to be very aware of your body technique, body form and correct posture while you work in the garden,” said Dr. Michael Gottfried, president of The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island and a practicing chiropractor at Aquidneck Chiropractic in Middletown, Rhode Island. “Remember to kneel, don’t bend, and alternate your stance and movements as often as possible to keep your muscles and body balanced.”

This spring, diligent home owners have been reviving their once frost and snow beaten lawns back to lush green carpet teeming with life.  Summer’s elongated days, increased temperatures, and rainfall, have contributed to the near perfect growing conditions in New England. Unfortunately, invasive plants or weeds, love the weather just as much as your lawn.

Though these undesirable tenants of your lawn need not be feared, they must be planned for and regularly addressed. Horticulturist Mike McDonald of Lawn Doctor of Boston, the South Shore, and Cape Cod attests, “Managing weeds is an essential part of lawn care – right up there mowing or watering.”

Generally, a healthy lawn will have a better chance at being a weed-free lawn. Adjusting simple lawn care tasks with weed prevention in mind can help to avoid an invasion before it can happen. Grass with thick high blades is best for weed prevention as well as overall health.  McDonald recommends “For strong grass: mow high. Higher blade length means deeper root systems. This will keep your lawn competitive with other plants above and below ground.”  Fertilizer can be added to improve thickness as well.

Keep an eye on potentially problematic patches. Areas that are walked on frequently or are near pavement and walkways often become overly compact. Often, weeds are able to triumph in compacted soil. If these weeds are further ignored, they may spread to the whole of your lawn.  So use the walkway instead of the lawn and keep track of parts of your lawn that are already compact.

Bare areas must be addressed as well. The season is still early enough to add seed to bare spots. This will give them a fighting chance at competing with weeds.  Continue to regularly check such patches. Weeds in these areas will cultivate easier than in the thick of your lawn. If left unattended, they may spread throughout your lawn.

The species of weeds found on lawn can bear insight on the cause for their invasion.  Knotweed has wiry stems, oval green leaves and is often seen in between bricks in walkways and in cracks on the streets and sidewalks. Its’ presence often indicates a lack of water. Larger amounts of Dandelions may indicate infrequency of mowing. Dandelions that are mowed down frequently will be unable to mature there seeds and cause further infestation.  McDonald cautions, “Its’ a delicate balance. Ragweed and Dandelions might mean you are not mowing enough. On the other side of the coin, if you mow too much blade length and root deepness will be reduced, weakening your lawns defense against new weeds.”

Patriot Great Matt Light kicks off Crescent Ridge Dairy’s July Ice Scream for a Great Cause, the Light Foundation.

Crescent Ridge announced that New England Patriot Great Matt Light will be their Celebrity Sundae ambassador for the month of July.

On Wednesday June 24th at 4:00 PM, Light will be at the Crescent Ridge Dairy Bar (407 Bay Road, Sharon, MA) to preview the contents of his “Super Bowl Sundae” and discuss how proceeds will be used to support The Light Foundation.  During Light’s appearance his sundae will be available for purchase. Sales officially kick off July 1st.

Light spent 11 extremely successful years with the New England Patriots complete with five5 Super Bowl appearances, three Super Bowl championships, and three trips to the ProBowl.  In addition to his athletic achievements, he started his own nonprofit his rookie year, The Light Foundation.

The Light Foundation strives to empower youth to reach their highest potential by initiating and supporting hands on programs and events that promote the development of rational moral values. Their main mission is to provide at-risk kids opportunities to reach their highest potential and become mentors to their peers.  During the entire month of July, order Matt’s sundae and a portion of the proceeds ($1 from a Kiddie and $2 from a Regular) will support the Light Foundation.
