Mass Bay Spine & Sport Physical Therapy Helps Rehabilitate One-Armed Marshfield Golfer

June 13, 2012 //  by admin

Brendan Carman, MPT, ATC, Director of Rehabilitation

Marshfield resident Jim Kilroy had been playing golf with one arm for over two decades after having his left arm amputated in 1985. But, the stress from playing golf with just one arm over the long-term began to take its toll on his shoulder. He developed arthritis and a bone spur in his shoulder, which eventually led to a massive tear in his rotator cuff last summer. The doctors at Mass General Hospital told him he needed surgery and had to give up golf.

Brendan Carman, MPT, ATC, Director of Rehabilitation at Mass Bay Spine & Sport Physical Therapy (MBSSPT), who oversees the state-of-the-art orthopedic outpatient physical therapy practice in Marshfield, entrusted Kilroy’s care to physical therapist on staff, Melissa Bodzinski, DPT, ATC, who believed that physical therapy after surgery could get him back in the game.

Kilroy, a Vietnam Veteran who lost his left arm to cancer (which was directly related to Agent Orange exposure), loved golf and did not want to give it up. He was referred to Dr. JP Warner, orthopedic surgeon at Mass General who performed rotator cuff surgery and told Kilroy it would take one year for him to recover fully.

Kilroy was determined to do whatever it took, no matter how long it took, to recover the use of his golfing arm and sought the care of MBSSPT’s practitioners to receive post-surgical physical therapy on his right arm. Bodzinski followed Dr. Warner’s protocol to the letter. It wasn’t long before Kilroy could chip and putt – well before the one year mark.

Kilroy claims to be an average golfer, shooting an 85 (46 on the front and 39 back, three over par). In anyone else’s opinion, Kilroy’s ability is considered well above average since he golfs with one arm. He had a 13 handicap, but went to a 20 prior to his rotator cuff surgery. Kilroy’s thrilled with his recovery, which has been slow, but steady. With his handicap already close to his pre-injury level, pretty soon he’ll be back on par.

“Mass Bay Spine and Sport is just a great office and Melissa and Brendan are personable and friendly. I thought I might never play golf again. Golfing was my therapy when I was suffering through three cancer surgeries, amputation and my wife dying of melanoma,” explained Kilroy.

He continued, “The surgery, follow up and physical therapy all work together. My arm feels brand new. I played 36 holes, three times a week during a recent trip to Florida.”

He credits his miraculous recovery and gleeful return to golf to Dr. Warner and his physical therapist, at MBSSPT, Melissa Bodzinski.

Kilroy, who was included in Let Me Tell You Where I’ve Been: Photographs and Interviews with Seven Vietnam Veterans by Janice Rogovin (1988), a book about Vietnam, the use of Agent Orange and the illnesses from exposure to the herbicide, has just been asked to get involved with other veterans returning from Iraq. He will be sharing his story as a cancer survivor, which will include a chapter on his recent shoulder (and golf game) recovery, with others.

Dukakis Reflects on 40 Years of Home Care

June 11, 2012 //  by admin

Former Governor Michael Dukakis

Former Governor Michael Dukakis, considered by advocates as perhaps the best “human services” Governor in state history, will help Mass Home Care celebrate 40 YEARS OF HOME CARE at the group’s Annual Meeting on June 18th at 11:30 am at the Burlington Marriott.

Dukakis will be introduced by the man who served as his Secretary of Elder Affairs, Paul Lanzikos, who is now Executive Director of North Shore Elder Services, one of the 27 Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) members of Mass Home Care. A dozen other home care activists and lawmakers will speak at the event.

The meeting will be the last event as Mass Home Care President for Linda George, Executive Director of Boston Senior Home Care, who is stepping down after a two-year term leading the organization. The group will also honor retiring State Representative Alice Wolf of Cambridge, the House Chair of the Elder Affairs committee, with a Home Care Hero award.

“They say things get easier with age,” noted Mass Home Care Executive Director Al Norman, who has served in that position since 1986. “But the struggle to keep elders at home always faces new challenges–even after 4 decades.”

Norman said despite all the focus in Massachusetts on health care reform, very little attention and money is focused on keeping older people at home.

“Long term support focuses on assisting people with chronic conditions with their daily functioning,” Norman said. “We’ve gotten much better at getting people out of nursing facilities, but not as good at getting money out of the budget.” Norman said Mass Home Care member agencies have helped drive down Medicaid nursing facility days by 30% over the past decade, saving Massachusetts taxpayers $600 million a year.

Created during the Frank Sargent Administration, our home care system is one of the largest in the nation. Here are some facts about home care in Massachusetts this year:

* $335 million in state and federal funding managed by Mass Home Care member agencies

* 82,600 individuals receive ASAP care management and coordination

* 10,444 elders eligible for institutions receive care at home

* 8.6 million meals served to 74,000 elders

* 150,000 information calls handled by regional ASAP agencies

* 18,282 reports of elder abuse investigated

* 55,000 nursing facility screenings conducted

* 2,000 elders receive Money Management assistance

* The typical home care client is an 81 years old woman, living alone

* 45% of home care clients live at or below the poverty line

In addition to the basic home care personal assistance services, such as help with eating, bathing, dressing, and toileting, the home care network manages a variety of other long term supports to keep elders and individuals with disabilities living in the community: Group Adult Foster Care, Adult Foster Care, Personal Care Attendant Program, Senior Care Options, Chronic Disease Self Management Programs, Money Management Programs, Guardianship Programs, HUD 202 and other Housing Programs, Geriatric Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Programs, and Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders (SHINE).

The Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) are all non-profit, and 51% of their board of directors are local individuals over the age of 60. In addition, Mass Home Care also represents Massachusetts’ 21 federally-designated Area Agencies on Aging, which manage more than $21 million annually in federal funding for nutrition, family caregivers, supportive services and nursing home ombudsman programs. Old Colony Elder Services, located in Brockton and founded in 1974, is the designated regional ASAP for 23 communities in greater Plymouth county.

Sponsors for the Mass Home Care event include: AARP Massachusetts, Advantage Home Medical, Affinity Home Health, Associated Home Care, Atrius Health, Bayada Home Health, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Boston Senior Home Care, Caregiver Homes, Commonwealth Care Alliance, Core Health, Fallon Community Health Plan/Summit Eldercare & Navicare, Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center, Home Care Alliance of Massachusetts, Home Health Resources, Highland Valley Elder Services, LaSalle Health, Linda Cragin, Mass Association of Older Americans, MA Council for Home Care Aide Services, Midtown Home Health Services, Old Colony Elder Services, Tufts Health Plan, and United Health Care.

Area Guide Map Marks Second Year with Expansion and Name Change.

June 11, 2012 //  by admin

LANCASTER COUNTY, PA…

Area entrepreneur, Mike Chenail has changed the name of his colorful, hand drawn area depiction from “Resort Maps of Lancaster County” to “Discovery Map of Lancaster”.  The name change was in synch with his franchisor’s purchase of Discovery Map®.

“Our franchisor is always looking to keep us on the cutting edge. The purchase of Discovery Map® not only adds 30 maps to our family, it capitalizes on their advanced position in internet marketing.  We increased the printing of our free area map from 300,000 paper maps to 333,333 this year and expanded the size from 82 potential advertisers to our current 126, but we realize we must be in the forefront of the electronic arena as well.” said Chenail.

Since last year advertisers have been found on the company’s free iPhone and iPad app. Starting next week advertisers and non advertisers alike are invited to share in Discovery Map® technology and install a free app called “MapApp™” to their Facebook page and website.  This tool replaces the current map link powered by international conglomerates Google and Mapquest with a more relevant Lancasterhand illustrated map, thereby raising their standing in web search results of keywords like, “Where to stay, eat, shop, things to do in Lancaster, PA.”  Contact Mike for easy installation instructions.

The company has forged partnerships to bring business back to the area. Chenail was very pleased with the product he received from Intelligencer Printing and that relationship has led to their printing of about 15 other maps this year.  Local craftsmen at George’s Furniture of Marrietta and Lapp’s Toys and Furniture in Ronks have sold hundreds of wooden map display cases to him and other franchisees according to Chenail. “I’m like most people, when I find a great product I tell others. That common human trait is what allowed us to increase ads by 25% this year. I’m very pleased at how we were received and look forward to promoting more of the great things our area offers.”

Chenail can be reached at mikec@discoverymap.com.

Old Colony Elder Services Announces New Congregate Meal Site At the Brockton Haitian Tabernacle Church

June 6, 2012 //  by admin

OCES’ newest congregate meal site has opened at the Brockton Haitian Tabernacle Church located at 696 N. Main Street. (L to R) Meprilia Glaude, Lefete Charles (standing), Olive Gilbert and Olianne Gilbert enjoy the congregate meal which was catered by Jeano’s, a 4-star Haitian Creole Restaurant in Brockton.

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) the Brockton based regional elder services agency serving seniors, individuals with disabilities, their families and caregivers throughout greater Brockton and Plymouth County, has recently opened a new congregate meal site at Brockton Haitian Tabernacle Church located at 696 North Main Street.

The Haitian community is one of the largest minority groups in Brockton. Historically, very few Haitian seniors have participated in congregate meal programs. Language and cultural barriers have been huge obstacles. This is one way OCES is expanding services to local cultural groups.

OCES’ new congregate meal site officially opened in March and currently serves church members. The congregate meal site is open three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday to serve a noon time meal.

The meals are catered by Jeano’s a four-star Haitian Creole Restaurant, located at 759 Main Street in Brockton. The menu, planned by a Nutritionist in collaboration with Jeano’s, meets one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowance for major nutrients. High sodium foods are not used and there is no salt added in cooking.

Members of the Brockton Haitian Tabernacle Church age 60 or older and/or disabled persons of any age can make reservations to attend this congregate meal site. Members who would like to attend the congregate meal site may apply at the Brockton Haitian Tabernacle Church.

OCES has five additional congregate meals sites in Brockton. To learn about congregate meal sites within our service area, contact OCES at (508) 584-1561.

Rodman & Rodman CPAs Outline Proposed Changes in Biomass Efficiency Rates for Renewable Energy Credits Qualification

June 6, 2012 //  by admin

The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) recently sent a finalized proposal of changes to the standards for biomass efficiency in the state. Rodman & Rodman, P.C. an independent accounting firm specializing in renewable energy projects with offices in Braintree and Newton, MA, outlines the proposed changes in biomass efficiency rates for REC qualification.

The original proposal called for a reduction in Renewable Energy Credits to be awarded by half for systems that were operating between 40 percent and 60 percent efficiency. The finalized proposal calls for a half credit to be awarded for systems operating between 50 percent and 60 percent efficiency. Systems operating below 50 percent would not qualify for the credit.

According to Steve Rodman, CPA, MST, President of Rodman & Rodman, “Biomass systems have been highly discussed since their initial use as to whether or not they are actually ‘renewable’. Some argue that the carbon released when burning woody materials in the system is the same as the carbon released when burning coal or other fossil fuels. Others argue that the carbon is being recaptured by the existing forests, and that the trees that are burned are replaced much faster than sources of coal and fossil fuels, making them a renewable source.”

He continued, “This is a major statement by the MA DOER. By requiring biomass systems to operate at 60 percent efficiency in order to qualify for the full credit, the DOER is establishing the need for these systems to be able to operate at a level that will hopefully reduce the amount of carbon that is re-released back into the atmosphere.”

Rodman stated that it would be a challenge for biomass projects that are getting started. They will need to get to at least 50 percent efficiency right away in order to see any credits. This will require biomass projects to take more time in the design and testing stages to ensure they comply with the efficiency requirements before going live.

The MA DOER is taking comments on this finalized proposal until mid-June, so there is a chance that these regulations may still be subject to change until they are fully enacted.

For more information, contact the Green Team, which is a specialized green energy and clean technology accounting and tax services practice within Rodman & Rodman at (617) 965-5959.

A third full of firsts. Kenyan Moninda Marube wins Old Sandwich Road Race (OSRR) Half Marathon.

June 5, 2012 //  by admin

Moninda Marube wins Old Sandwich Road Race
2012 Old Sandwich Road Race Half Marathon winner Moninda Marube with Race Director Craig Valentine Brenner

PLYMOUTH, MA…

One of the draws of the Old Sandwich Road Race (OSRR) is the history of and along the course. Now in its third year, the race itself is making some history as Kenyan Moninda Marube won the Men’s Half Marathon in course record time of 1:08:13. In the process, he collected the largest winner’s purse in the history of the race, a winner-take-all $3,000.

“It may have been a cold and damp day, but Moninda torched the course,” said Steven V. Dubin, OSRR communications director. “Besides setting the course record, Moninda brought an electricity to the event that inspired the other runners.”

Maxwell Basset of New Hampshire was one of those runners. The 16-year-old finished first in the OSRR 10k, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the race. In fact, the top five finishers in the 10k were all 18 years of age or younger, the youngest being Collyn Brenner, a Plymouth resident and the 14-year-old son of OSRR Race Director Craig Valentine Brenner.

“I could not be more proud of my son for his efforts,” said Brenner. “The day before the race, we took Moninda for a drive of the course. My son’s a very good runner but I have no doubt that being around one of the elite Kenyan runners pushed him just a little more.”

The OSRR winners were as follows:

Half Marathon:

  • Men’s – Moninda Marube, 1:08:13
  • Women’s – Kailin Collins, 1:20:21

Marube received $3,000 for his first overall finish. Collins received $1500. All Half Marathon participants received finisher medals.

10k:

  • Men’s – Maxwell Basset, 36:10
  • Women’s – Alison Foley, 47:14

5K:

  • Men’s – Andrew Sorensen, 19:30
  • Women’s – Emily Manion, 22:29

While many local residents participate in the OSRR, the race continues to draw runners from other parts of the country and world. Based on Marube’s post-race comments, those numbers are likely to increase for the 2013 OSRR.

“Moninda said he was going to return next year and bring some of his friends from Kenya,” said Brenner.

Originally a trail used by the Wampanoag Native American tribe, Old Sandwich Road later became the nation’s first true public road and a stagecoach route to ferry passengers and mail back and forth between the Massachusetts towns of Plymouth and Sandwich. Today, the road remains pretty much as the Pilgrims left it–a wide, scenic, dirt road bordered by beautiful tall pine trees and towering oaks. It offers perfect views for runners and a dirt road surface that’s far kinder to the body than asphalt or cement.

The Old Sandwich Road Race includes two days of races. Saturday, June 2, featured the Kids Classic and the OSRR 5k. Sunday’s main events included the OSRR Half Marathon, which took place on Old Sandwich Road, and the OSRR 10k, beginning at Plimouth Plantation. All races ended at Plymouth South High School.

A portion of the profits from the Old Sandwich Road Race go to The Home for Little Wanderer’s Baird Center School in Plymouth. The Baird Center School is a year-round residential and day school treatment program for youth aged 10-18 with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, educational and psychiatric issues.

Kenyan runner goes the distance to run in third annual Old Sandwich Road Race, June 2 and 3, 2012.

May 31, 2012 //  by admin

Moninda Marube will participate in this Sunday's Old Sandwich Road Race

PLYMOUTH, MA…

In its short history, the Old Sandwich Road Race has drawn participants from  all around the United States and four foreign countries. With the recent entry of elite runner Kenyan Moninda Marube to the Half Marathon—taking place on Sunday, June 3–the third annual race has its first participant from the continent of Africa.
“The Kenyans are to distance running what the New York Yankees are to baseball, what the Boston Celtics are to basketball—they are a running dynasty,” Steven V. Dubin, Old Sandwich Road Race communications director.  “Moninda’s participation in this race shows you how far the Old Sandwich Road Race has come in just a few years.”
Marube has participated in more than a dozen marathons and half-marathons in the U.S. since 2010. That included winning the 2010 Little Rock Marathon, as well as participating in several prestigious running events, such as the Santa Barbara International Marathon, the MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon, and the Waddell and Reed Kansas City Marathon.
“With his recent winning times, Moninda has the potential to run our course in about an hour and 10 minutes. That would be by far the fastest time for a half marathon in Plymouth or anywhere else south of Boston.” said OSRR Race Director Craig Valentine Brenner.  “It seems like this year’s race, with the location being on historic Old Sandwich Road itself, we’re about to make history once again. Here come the Kenyans.”
The 2012 Old Sandwich Road Race will take place over the course of two days, Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. The Saturday race will feature the Kids Classic and the OSRR 5k. Sunday’s main events include the OSRR Half Marathon, which takes place on Old Sandwich Road, and the OSRR 10k, beginning at Plimouth Plantation. All races end at Plymouth South High School.
Improvements for the 2012 OSRR include a $3,000 winner-take-all purse for the half marathon winner and finisher’s medals for all half marathon participants. Other improvements include:
• Medals for all half-marathon finishers.
• Improved awards for top three finishers in all races.
• Premium t-shirt for first 800 registrants.
• Bib-Tag Timing System for all races.
• Additional buses for start area transport.
• Additional port-o-potties for half marathon start area.
• Healthier food options at post race barbecue.
• Post-race barbecue open to the public.

Charter Schools Can Obtain “Large Company” Benefits at a Fraction of the Cost with the Help of HR Knowledge

May 29, 2012 //  by admin

Jeffrey C. Garr, CEO

HR Knowledge will exhibit at the 2012 National Charter Schools Conference in Minneapolis, June 19-22.  The company launched a Charter School division last autumn and now provides comprehensive, integrated group benefits, financial services, payroll processing and human resource services to more than 60 Charter Schools across the nation.

One of the key reasons they have experienced such rapid growth is that they have the expertise to address the specific payroll, HR, retirement and benefit challenges that Charter Schools encounter.  They take the burden of these tasks – which can be time-consuming, tedious, error-prone and downright expensive when not managed or implemented effectively – off of Charter School staff, so that concentration is focused on the critical aspects of education.

HR Knowledge has mastered the easy-to-use, scalable technology and can help to minimize operational risks, reduce administrative costs and reduce benefit costs.

They specialize in meeting the specific needs of Charter Schools:

  • Retirement Management and Expertise
  • Group Benefits Support
  • Specialized Reporting and Audit Support
  • Human Resource Support

By outsourcing HR services, Charter Schools can realize a cost savings of up to 60 PERCENT over those who maintain in-house HR staff and administration.  In addition to these cost savings, HR Knowledge can negotiate the best price on healthcare plans for Charter School providers.

The Bottom Line

HR Knowledge delivers large-company benefits and services to Charter School staff at a fraction of the cost, with the human touch that all staff will appreciate.
