South Coast Improvement, Co. adds Franciscan Hospital in Boston, MA and Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, MA to its growing list of healthcare clients

Marion, Mass.-based South Coast Improvement, Co. recently complete project in the reception area of Franciscan Hospital in Boston, MA.

MARION, MA, BOSTON, MA and PLYMOUTH, MA…

For the past decade, South Coast Improvement Co. (SCI) has provided design/build services to long-term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities and brain trauma units throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. With the recent completion of projects at Franciscan Hospital in Boston, MA and Jordan Hospital in Plymouth, SCI has expanded its services to include hospitals.

“I have always thought the work we’ve been doing for years with our renovations in occupied units for long-term-care patients and in brain trauma units would translate very well to conventional hospital work seeing how process and the finished product are just as vital in both sectors,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Co. “These two projects at Franciscan Hospital and Jordan Hospital are proof positive that what we do also works for traditional hospitals.”

At Jordan Hospital, South Coast Improvement Co. provided a complete build out for the new Outpatient Spine Clinic. The project featured a reception area, new administrative offices and multiple exam rooms.

Said Quinlan, “Getting the opportunity to work with a respected provider like Jordan Hospital was a tremendous boost. Their architect, Jaca Architects is among the most respected healthcare architects in the northeast so we knew we had to be right with our work.”

Located at 30 Warren Street in the Brighton section of Boston, Franciscan Hospital treats young children with a variety of ailments. SCI’s project included relocation of the reception desk without ever closing down the entrance lobby-a logistical challenge that SCI met by completely constructing the new reception desk off-site and preparing the wiring in advance. Installation was as simple as dropping in the desk and plugging in the electrical.

The other innovative component of the project was the millwork, which was designed to be blades of sea grass waving in the breeze. A cloud system was also constructed out of drywall and hung over the new reception desk.

“This project was unique in that the design called for a very colorful, welcoming motif that suggested a seashore yet still had to meet all of the Department of Public Health codes.” says Sean Whalen, SCI vice president of business development, who worked very closely with the architect and hospital management to bring this to fruition.

South Coast Improvement Co is a recognized leader in providing building and renovation services to a client base of senior living, healthcare and institutional clients. For more information, please call 508-748-6545 or visit www.southcoastimprovement.com.

Tea for chi. Dr. Chang Naturals’ schizandra berries make tea time a potential lifesaver

Featured on the Dr. Oz Show, the schizandra berry supports healthy energy, vitality, cell function, calming relaxation, mental clarity, stamina, immunity, detoxification, reproduction and digestion.

WHATELY, MA…

For tea drinkers, that morning cup is a jump start to their day. People who are slow to rise in the morning might even call it a “lifesaver”. Yet for those who are embracing a healthier lifestyle without the caffeine, tea made from schizandra berries, a known adaptogen, might actually be a lifesaver.

An adaptogen, as applied to certain botanicals, brings balance to the body. In short, it helps ‘adapt’ to what the body needs at the moment. One person may need energy, another stress relief. Schizandra berries, as an adaptogen, help by assisting the body to reach its optimum level of health and well-being—a state referred to by science as ‘homeostasis’.

“Schizandra berries support healthy energy, vitality, cell function, calming relaxation, mental clarity, stamina, immunity, detoxification, reproduction and digestion,” said Steve, Dubin, a spokesman for Dr. Chang’s Naturals, a division of Dr. Tso-cheng Chang’s Farm of Whately, Massachusetts, the only commercial grower of schizandra berries in North America. “So while the morning cup of tea may be a figurative lifesaver for some, a morning cup of schizandra berry tea could actually be one.”

There are various ways to make an instant cup of schizandra berry tea. A simple recipe calls for:

  • One quart of boiling hot water
  • One teaspoon of powdered schizandra berries
  • Mix with the hot water
  • Let sit for three to five minutes
  • Add honey to taste and serve

This recipe can be modified to suit your particular tastes. For example, adding fresh lemon juice and a sweetener can create a zesty hot tea that’s quite refreshing.

“While studies on the effects of schizandra berries are ongoing, some Chinese researchers claim schizandra berries can help detoxify the body, remove parasites, increase energy supply to vital organs, help strengthen the immune system, increase physical performance, and prevent side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, as well as possess anti-inflammatory properties,” said Dubin.

Dr Chang Naturals grows and wholesales their certified organic schizandra berry powder worldwide. Consumers and retailers can learn more about this powder, and how to buy it, by contacting the distributor Lucidera at www.organicschizandra.com.  For more information about Chang’s Naturals, you can visit http://www.organicchiberry.com.

Will your insurance pay for an iPad for your child with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)

August 27, 2013 //  by admin

WORCESTER, MA…

Many parents of children with autism spectrum disorders have found applications like Proloquo2go App, TouchChat, OneVoice or TapToTalk to be very useful tools in their child’s speech development. Unfortunately, with the costs associated with programs for ASD children, many parents can’t afford to buy an iPad to run these helpful applications. There are, however, some insurance providers who will cover part or all of the expense of an iPad and applications.

“One of the challenges parents of children with ASDs face is not knowing what’s available for their children through their insurance provider and through their school system and that’s one of the things we help them with,” said Dr. Jeff Robinson, Ph.D., founder of Behavioral Concepts, Inc. (BCI), a company of behavioral clinicians specializing in the care of children with autism in Central Massachusetts. “It’s encouraging that healthcare providers are seeing the value of these apps and covering all or part of the expense.”

How do you find out if you are eligible? First, check your medical benefits for your “Durable Medical Coverage”. If your healthcare provider covers a percentage of these costs that makes it affordable to move forward, call your insurance company and ask to be assigned to a case manager who is experienced with special needs children.

In working with a case manager, you will need to essentially build a case for your child’s need for the iPad and, specifically, the Proloquo2goApp (this app is be is being introduced by speech therapists and occupational therapists in public schools for special needs kids as well as in private therapy). Provide links with costs for both the iPad and the application. Also send links to more expensive speech therapy systems like Dynavox to demonstrate how what you want to purchase compares to other systems. Be sure to ask the case manager for all the necessary approval codes and coverage information so you are aware and comfortable with any out-of-pocket expenses you may incur.

“During the phone conversation, you may be denied your request. If so, ask your insurance company to e-mail or fax a letter of denial. The reason for this is that there are other funding sources out there that might be able to help and you will need the denial letter from your insurance to help those efforts,” said Robinson.

If you have received the green light from your case manager, submit your Request for Approval with the following:

  • Include a cover letter explaining what you would like to purchase and why.  Explain how it will be used and what benefits it would provide your child.
  • Supporting documents from Google, etc.
  • Letters from doctors, speech therapists, etc. expressing “Medical Necessity”
  • Receipt of the device and the AugCom App

“Most likely, you will have to be reimbursed for your purchase of the iPad and application. Your reimbursement package should be fairly similar to the request for approval, only the cover letter will explain what you bought and for what reason, along with receipts,” said Robinson. “It may sound like quite a bit of effort, but it is absolutely worth give your child a learning tool like this.”

Savoring dry cleaning savings. Tips on how to save money on dry cleaning.

August 26, 2013 //  by admin

HANOVER, MA …

Nowadays, people are looking for as many ways to reduce their monthly expenses as possible. For some that means buying longer, more energy efficient light bulbs. For others, maybe it’s one or two less meals out a week. Yet when it comes to reducing an expense like dry cleaning, most people feel boxed in by the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

“If you read a lot of those tags, many will say ‘For best results, dry clean only’. And that makes perfect sense because dry cleaning is the best way to get something clean. But not every one of these items must be dry cleaned,” said Kevin Dubois, CEO of Lapels Dry Cleaning, an environmentally friendly dry cleaning franchise with more than 40 locations nationwide. “Truth be told, there are many ways to save money on dry cleaning, in addition to washing some ‘dry clean only’ items yourself.”

Dubois recommends:

  • Read the garment label – Clothing is required by law to have a care label that recommends at least one cleaning method. Many manufacturers take a conservative approach and list “Dry Clean Only”. Some of these garments you might be able to wash on your own. Simple, unlined garments made of natural fibers or polyester can be washed by hand or on the gentle cycle in a washer in cold water.
  • Clip Coupons and Watch for Specials – Many dry cleaners provide coupons in local mailers and online. You may also find special deals offered throughout the week. Be sure to “like” your dry cleaner’s Facebook page to keep in touch with same day specials.
  • Keep Your Clothes Clean – Easier said than done, but the best way to avoid dry cleaning costs. Keep a stain removal pen or wipes handy. Wear a washable t-shirt under jackets to prevent perspiration stains. Apply deodorant, hair products, scented sprays and perfumes several minutes before getting dressed to reduce stains. After every wearing, hang your dry clean clothing up and allow it to air for several hours before hanging in a cramped closet.
  • Select Clothing with Simple Construction and Washable Fabrics – Factor in the material and the cleaning options when making your clothing choices. A straight or a-line skirt costs less to have professionally cleaned than a pleated skirt. A sweater with no sequins or elaborate beading can be hand-washed. A wool coat is less expensive to clean than a suede coat.

One of the hidden costs of having your clothes professionally dry cleaned is the gas you use to go pick up your clothes. Factor in the amount of gasoline and time it takes to take clothes to a dry cleaner and pick them up. It may be time to look for a new cleaner who is closer to your office or home and has easy access.

“While cutting back where you can is important, you also want to get the most value for your dry cleaning dollar,” said Dubois, “That’s why it’s important to work with a dry cleaner that’s reliable, who does a great job on your clothes and provides superior customer service.”

Lapels has pioneered its eco-friendly dry cleaning experience for the past 10 years.  Using the latest technology in equipment and cleaning solution, Lapels is one of the few dry cleaners able to boast that there is no hazardous waste in their process. Their environmentally-friendly cleaning process has no odor and is gentler on clothes, thus lengthening the life of clothes. At Lapels you can see, feel and smell the difference.

Lapels customers are greeted to a warm and inviting reception area, with friendly customer service representatives, and a full service on-site tailor.

Lapels offers it’s customers Automatic Rewards earning them credit towards free dry cleaning for every dollar they spend, Loyalty Programs, a VIP Program which eliminates the need to wait in line and the use of a 24 Hour Drop Off Service. Same day service is also available with pick-up after 5 pm.

Saving yourself from a post-wedding trauma. How to properly store your wedding dress

August 22, 2013 //  by admin

HANOVER, MA …

So, you’ve had your magical day. Before you and your groom board the plane, you make arrangements for your maid of honor to pick up your wedding dress so it can be stored away for your daughter and maybe even her daughter. You even have the place where you’re going to store your dress. All that’s left is getting the dress from the dry cleaner and putting it away. While this might seem like the logical process for storing a wedding dress, more than a few gowns have met an untimely demise following a similar course of action.

“How you store a gown is even more important than getting the gown clean,” said Kevin Dubois, CEO of Lapels Dry Cleaning, an environmentally friendly dry cleaning franchise with more than 40 locations nationwide. “The biggest mistake brides make is thinking they can store the dress in the plastic wrap from the dry cleaners. Over time, the plastics can give off chemicals that can discolor the fabric.”

Some other common storage mistakes include:

  • Remove the safety pins – Over time, metal pins can oxidize and leave rust marks on the dress.
  • Box your dress in acid-free tissue – If you are having your dress boxed, make sure it is being packed in acid free tissue paper. This helps prevent yellowing of the dress (remember that even with proper care it may be impossible to prevent all yellowing over time).
  • Check the dress periodically while in storage – You want to check your dress once a year for a couple of reasons. First, checking frequently, you will know sooner rather than later if the dress is deteriorating through inappropriate storage. Second, an annual check is a good opportunity to refold the dress to prevent permanent creases.
  • Avoid plastic storage boxes – Plastic may work well for seasonal storage, but are not suited to long term storage. If any moisture develops inside the box the fabric can develop mildew.
  • The temperature and climate – It is important that the textile can breathe. If the humidity around the dress remains constant, the likelihood of mold/mildew is reduced.
  • Avoid storing in humid or damp areas – Ideally the dress should NOT be stored in an area which is prone to high humidity (like your attic) or damp (like your basement), fluctuating temperatures increase the risk of deterioration. Often a wardrobe or under the bed is the best place.
  • Stay out of the light – If the dress is not boxed make sure it is stored away from sunlight and artificial light. Any type of long-term exposure to light can cause degradation and fading of the fabric.

“Of course, even under perfect conditions your dress might fade or discolor slightly as the fabric ages,” said DuBois. “But if you are intent on the dress lasting a while and possibly being used by future generations, please consult with a professional dry cleaner to discuss the best way to preserve your specific gown.”

Golf Cart Market is Tap In for Emerson Bearing Boston

August 21, 2013 //  by admin

BOSTON… Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets, has recently launched a Golf division to specifically cater to the bearing needs of golf courses and facilities utilizing golf carts throughout the U.S.

Emerson Bearing Boston’s Golf division was created to meet increased demand and significant growth in this particular market over the past two years.

Emerson Bearing Boston has appointed Richard Furtado to lead the Golf division. A resident of Boston and Emerson Bearing’s Senior Sales Expert, Furtado has been with the company for more than three decades. He graduated from Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, GA with a degree in Business Management and over the years has received additional training and accreditation at Emerson Bearing Boston.

Furtado will assist clients in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of the bearing in relation to the application.

Bearings for the golf cart market must be able to withstand outdoor environments and for this, Emerson Bearing Boston provides mounted units with triple lip seals and ball bearings with full contact sealing. They also provide spherical bushings, spherical roller bearings, tapered roller bearings, adhesives and sealants, rod ends, oil seals and mounted units. Emerson Bearing Boston carries a full range of brands for this market including SKF, FAG and KVC, as quite often, customers choose a brand based on price point.
