Run like the wind. Nearly 100-plus runners/walkers/volunteers brave Irene to participate in Run for Faith 4Mile Memorial Run.

September 6, 2011 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

During her life, Faith “Marcy” Romboldi was known for her indomitable spirit, particularly when it came to those she loved and causes she cared about. That spirit was evident in the 100-plus participants—runners, walkers and volunteers alike- who endured Tropical Storm Irene to participate in the first annual Run for Faith, a four-mile run held in memory of Mrs. Romboldi on Sunday, August 28.

“Sure, we would have loved to have had a perfect day with ideal weather conditions for the first year,” said Matthew Romboldi, Faith’s son and one of the run’s organizers. “In many ways, having it on a day like this makes it even more memorable. Mom certainly would have been one of the first ones to volunteer, even knowing what the weather forecast was going to be.”

Faith, or “Marcy” as she was known by her friends and family, was a teacher, member of the Red Hat’s Society, Sweet Adeline’s, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008 and passed away 2010. The Run for Faith was set up to commemorate Faith Romboldi’s life and to raise money for causes near and dear to her heart: Plymouth Public Library, Children’s Department, Plymouth Elementary Schools, music scholarship programs and prevention programs for ovarian cancer. Between sponsorships and entry fees, the Run for Faith raised $22,000 in its first year.

The four-mile race loop started at Plimouth Plantation and followed a challenging course with scenic views, ending back at the Plantation. Plymouth resident Drew Sorenson was the first runner to cross the finish line, completing the run in 27 minutes, 55 seconds. Heidi Sanders, also of Plymouth, was the first female finisher. Her time was 31 minutes, 28 seconds.

“The runners and walkers are absolutely to be commended for the effort they put forth under some adverse weather conditions to help make this first year race a success and to raise funds for causes that will benefit the Plymouth community,” said Craig Valentine Brenner, who served as a volunteer consultant for the first year run. Brenner is the race director of another fairly new Plymouth road race, the Old Sandwich Road Race.

Added volunteer Steve Dubin, “There was a real spirit of camaraderie among the volunteers and runners that we weren’t going to let the storm get in the way of the run no matter what. And the show went on and it’s something that those who took part in it will never forget.”

“There are so many people to thank for helping make this race a success. We’re especially grateful to all the volunteers and the folks at Plimouth Plantation. It would have been very easy for them to look at the weather forecast and postpone, but they stood by us and we appreciate that,” said Romboldi. “We’re especially thankful to folks like Craig Brenner, Adam Stuhlfaut of Bayside Runner, Ann Marie Winchester of the Run for the Rock, Erin Brenton Woods from Girls on the Go and all the sponsors who wanted to be a part of this first year run.”

Corporate sponsors include Marty’s GMC, Delaney & Muncey, P.C.; Plimoth Plantation; Newfield House, Unity Club, Mama Mia’s, Nolan Schelle Insurance; Mayflower Bank; Left Shore Designs; Dunlap Propane; Pilgrim Belle; Cape Cod Media Center; Pilgrim Custom Countertops; Baker’s Music and Video; and 99.1 WPLM-FM.

For more information on the race, please visit www.runforfaithplymouth.org, or e-mail info@runforfaithplymouth.org.

Action Bearing Helps Harness the Wind with Dedicated Wind Power Division

August 22, 2011 //  by admin

Rick Piracini
Action Bearing, providers of bearings and related products to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets throughout New England, has announced a dedicated Wind Power Generation Division to accommodate the unique bearing requirements of the wind turbine market.

Rick Piracini, Marketing Specialist and industry expert at Action Bearing, will oversee the Wind Power Generation division, assisting clients in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of all of the various types of bearings needed for wind turbines.

Wind turbines often stand 250 feet in the air and are mechanical and technical marvels that rely on bearings, which are the key components of the gearbox, generator and blade.

Action Bearing provides the necessary roller bearings, deep groove ball bearings and four point contact bearings for gearboxes.

The generator in the nacelle of a wind turbine is subjected to significantly greater vibration loads, so bearing size, design and lubrication all play a critical role. The bearing arrangement of a generator generally contains a combination of deep groove ball bearings or cylindrical roller bearings, all of which are available through Action Bearing. Due to the risk of serious damage such as melt craters and false brinelling, Action Bearing advises using current insulated bearings in many applications.

It is critical that the turbines be aligned optimally to the wind. This is controlled by blade bearings (pitch bearings), Yaw bearing and blade adjustment which requires sealed spherical bushings that have corrosion protection which are all available through Action Bearing.

Action’s 24/7 service and vast inventory are critical to the operations of wind power clients. For more information or to speak with Rick Piracini of Action Bearing, call 1-866-995-8765 or email rickp@Actionbearing.com.

The Action Bearing Difference

In a proud tradition, the same families that started the company in 1957 keep Action Bearing rolling by specializing in bearings for OEM and MRO markets throughout New England. Action Bearing’s highly knowledgeable staff housed in their 23,000 square foot facility provide bearings ranging in size from 3mm to tunnel-boring 15-foot-diameter giants.

Action Bearing, the sister company of Emerson Bearing which serves the worldwide markets, provides solutions to a variety of industries including: aggregate, concrete, mining, machine tools, electric motor repair, marine, material handling, metal processing, packaging, food processing, paper converting, printing, wind/power generation, recreation, heavy construction, robotics, automation, transportation, wood products, wastewater treatment, pump, compressor and oil field.

Action Bearing offers customers a one-stop shopping experience. With an online product catalog with over 3 million bearings; a vast inventory of bearings; worldwide sourcing; a fixed price program; a knowledgeable staff dedicated to delivering; same day shipping and 24/7 service, Action Bearing has become the leading provider of bearings to OEM and MRO markets in the U.S. Action Bearing maintains headquarters at 201 Brighton Ave. Boston, MA. Gobbling up runners and rave reviews. Second annual Plymouth Thanksgiving Day Pilgrim 5K Run and Walk set for November 24.

August 19, 2011 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

Last year’s inaugural Plymouth Thanksgiving Day Pilgrim 5K Run and Walk attracted a flock of more than 550 runners.  This second year event is expected to greatly expand and will be limited to the first 1000 runners.

The race kicks off from the Village Racquet and Fitness Center, at Pine Hills, 30 Gold Drive, Plymouth at 9 a.m. rain or shine on Thanksgiving morning. The course includes the oldest road in America, Old Sandwich Road in Plymouth and offers some the beautiful ocean, forest and historic site vistas along the well groomed dirt road.  This race site was the original trail used by Pilgrims and Native Americans in the 1600’s as they traveled from Plymouth to Sandwich, Mass.

Cost is $25 online until November 22 and $30 thereafter and on race day from 7:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.

All kids will receive a finishers’ medal.  Top 3 male and female runners will receive cash ($500, $250 and $100 respectively).  The first 100 finishers will receive gift certificates worth $10 to $75 each. T-Shirts, designed by professional graphic artists, will be given to all 1,000 runners.

The course is flat and exceptionally fast.  Last year many runners reported running their annual “PR” (personal record) on this course.

“What could be more fun, more appropriate and better for digestion than a Thanksgiving run in America’s hometown Plymouth,” suggested Craig Valentine Brenner, race director and founder.  He added, “As a runner, I know the joy of running a dirt road in a pack of other enthusiastic runners.  This is a great way to kick off a healthy holiday.”

Sponsors include The Cleanist, Bayside Runner, Village Racquet and Fitness Center, Brenner Signs, Cape Olio and Rye Tavern.

For complete information visit the www.ThanksGivingDayPilgrim5k.Yolasite.com. The race also has pages on Facebook and Twitter. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring the race, please contact Craig Valentine Brenner at 617-680-4230 or runosrr@gmail.com.

Resort Maps gives tourists and locals a hand. New iPhone/iPad app delivers easy access to info on local attractions and venues.

August 18, 2011 //  by admin

WAITSFIELD, VERMONT…

Usually, if you’re terribly familiar with a location, it’s said “you know it like the back of your hand”. Resort Maps, creator of more than 100 customized travel maps across the United States, England, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, recently launched an application for the other side of your hand (for iPhones and iPads) that will help residents and tourists discover and get to local attractions just as efficiently.

Resort Maps made its name with colorful, hand-drawn maps of towns and cities, featuring its advertisers–restaurants, accommodations, retail shops, real estate and other services. Those same hard copy maps are also available online. The new application enables users to download each Resort Map to a handheld device and then navigate to highlighted locations where they can get a brief description of a given business and have the option of going to that business’s website or calling for more information.

“The beauty of the app is that you’re only accessing the map from our server once. After you download it, you can surf from location to location very quickly. That can save a lot of time if you are looking for a place to eat or place to stay and have several options,” said Peter Hans, president of Resort Maps. “The app also utilizes the phone’s GPS qualities so you can easily see how to get from where you are to whatever destination you select.”

The application can be downloaded for free at the Apple store or itunes.com. A search for “Resort Maps Franchise” is the fastest way to access the application.

Besides the convenience, the Resort Maps also makes it easy to update on Facebook where you end up for dinner, for the afternoon, for the evening.

“We’ve really just scratched the surface with this application. Down the road, users can expect to not only post on Facebook, but also on other outlets. Perhaps even leaving a review of the particular advertiser on our site, similar to a Yelp or other review sites,” said Hans.

For more information on any of the 100+ Resort Maps destinations, please visit www.resortmaps.com. If you interested in potentially owning a Resort Maps franchise, please call 802-496-6277.

A good deed that goes rewarded. Cumberland resident Jean Lamson receives “Tireless Neighbor” award from Haley’s Tire.

August 11, 2011 //  by admin

Haley's Tire's "Tireless Neighbor" Jean Lamson with Haley's Tire Manager Matt Ahonen

BIDDEFORD, BANGOR, AUGUSTA AND FALMOUTH, MAINE…

Running a community food pantry, as Jean Lamson does for the Cumberland Congregational Church, is certainly not a thankless task. The ‘thank you’s’ are plentiful from the families in need that the pantry helps. Yet that’s the only compensation Lamson receives for working 20 hours or more a month at the pantry. That generosity and selflessness did, however, earn her the distinction of being selected for Haley’s Tire & Service Center’s “Tireless Neighbor” award.

Each month, Haley’s Tire & Service Center recognizes somebody in the four communities they serve—Augusta, Bangor, Biddeford and Falmouth—for going above and beyond the call of duty for the communities in which they live. Candidates are nominated by fellow citizens, who submit a short description as to why a particular nominee should be that month’s Tireless Neighbor. The entry that makes the most compelling case, as determined by Haley’s Tire staff, receives the Tireless Neighbor honor, which includes a free oil change (a $29.95 value) at any Haley’s Tire location.

“We’re delighted to honor Jean as the first recipient of our Tireless Neighbor award,” said Tim Haley, owner of Haley’s Tire. “This is a tough economy for many people and food pantries like the one Jean runs can literally be the difference between feeding your family or not. Jean’s selfless contribution of her time makes her an extremely worthy winner.”

A Cumberland resident, Lamson has worked at the food pantry since 2005. Congregational Church Senior Minister Diane Bennekamper nominated her for the Tireless Neighbor contest.

“I’m deeply moved by Diane’s gesture in nominating me for this award,” said Lamson, a retired United Airlines worker who settled in Cumberland with her husband Allan in 2000. “The pantry operates strictly by donations, so keeping it going is not always easy. But we are helping families in the area and I find that to be quite fulfilling.”

Haley’s Tire honors a Tireless Neighbor once a month in the four communities it serves. People can nominate a Tireless Neighbor by sending an e-mail of 200 words or less to tirelessneighbor@haleystire.com . Please remember to include your name and telephone number as well as the name and telephone number or e-mail of the person they are nominating. Written nominations can be dropped off or mailed to any Haley’s Tire & Service Center. The locations and mailing address of the four Haley’s Tire & Service Center are below:

  • Haley’s Tire & Service Center Augusta – 300 State Street, Augusta, ME 04330
  • Haley’s Tire & Service Center Bangor – 47 Bangor Mall Blvd, Bangor, ME 04401
  • Haley’s Tire & Service Center Biddeford – 124 Elm Street, Biddeford, ME 04001
  • Haley’s Tire & Service Center Falmouth – Route 1 Falmouth Shop Center, Falmouth, ME  04105

In addition to being an authorized Goodyear, Dunlop and Kelly Tires dealer, Haley’s Tire is a full-service repair shop. Besides making sure your tires have enough tread on them, Haley’s offers a host of tune-up and maintenance services– oil changes, alignments, brakes service (including free brake inspections), transmission maintenance—that can help motorists avoid the summer bummer, otherwise known as a breakdown while on a summer driving vacation.
