Old Sandwich Road Race goes for the gold, signs on as gold level member of the Bayside Runner Race Series.

March 15, 2011 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

In its first year in 2010, the Old Sandwich Road Race (OSRR) made history by hosting its inaugural race largely on Old Sandwich Road, America’s oldest road. In its second year, OSRR took another large step toward becoming a premier destination race by becoming a Gold level member of the Bayside Runner Race Series.

Bayside Runner Owner Adam Stuhlfaut began the Bayside Runner Race Series last month as a means to promote Plymouth road races. In addition to Bayside, the Series has attracted a number of sponsors, including Mizuno sports equipment and apparel. Races who join the Bayside Runner Race Series receive a number of benefits, including marketing and promotional opportunities, as well as race day giveaways and perks for those who run their respective races.

“Plymouth is an incredible place to hold a road race for a variety of reasons, starting with location and history,” said Craig Valentine Brenner, race director for the Old Sandwich Road Race. “The Bayside Runner series just shines a light on the wide variety of great races we have here in town and how Plymouth is now officially on the map as a road race destination.”

Other members of the Bayside Runner Race Series include:

  • Manomartian Road Race – May 15 – Gold
  • Jenney Grist Mill 5K – June 25 – Gold
  • Run for Conservation 5k – August 6 – Gold
  • Run to the Rock Half Marathon – September 10 – Gold
  • Plymouth Police & Fire 5k – September 25 – Gold
  • Kayla’s Beat Goes On 5k – October 1 – Gold
  • Turkey Chase for Charity 5k – November 20 – Gold
  • Thanksgiving Day Pilgrim 5k – Thanksgiving Day – Gold
  • The Absolute Pursuit – July 23 – Silver
  • Plymouth Youth Hockey 5 mile – Silver
  • Earthday 4 Mile – Bronze
  • Woodside Family 5k – Bronze

Runners can register for the series by e-mailing raceseries@baysiderunner.com with some basic information (name, birthday, and gender). As runners participate in Bayside Runner Series races, they accrue points. The higher the level of race, the more points you accrue (e.g. participate in a Gold race, win 3 points; Silver, 2; Bronze 1). If you win or come in second or third for a participating race, you also win points. Overall winners at the end of the year can win prize packages worth between $100 and $200 in Mizuno products. Age group winners will receive $50 gift cards for Mizuno products at Bayside Runner at 38 Long Pond Road in Plymouth.

“The response from local race directors to the Series has been tremendous,” said Stuhlfaut. “Plymouth’s star is definitely on the rise among Massachusetts road races. The first Old Sandwich race is evidence of that. Hopefully, the Bayside Runner Race Series can take Plymouth races to even higher heights.”

For more information on the Bayside Runner Race Series, you can visit http://www.plymouthrunning.com/bayside-runner-race-series.php.

The 2011 Old Sandwich Road Race will take place over the course of two days, Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5. The Saturday race will feature the Kids Classic and a new addition to the Old Sandwich Road Race, the OSRR 5k. Sunday’s main events include the OSRR Half Marathon, which takes place on Old Sandwich Road, and the Entergy 10k, beginning at Plimouth Plantation. All races end at Plymouth South High School.

Those interested in running the 2011 OSRR can sign up via www.oldsanwichroadrace.com. The first 1500 registrants will receive a shirt. This year’s race also has a referral lottery. If you are a registered runner and you refer a friend, who identifies your name in the fill-in field on the online registration form, you will be automatically entered into a drawing for $250 in running gear from Bayside Runner www.baysiderunner.com. The winner will be announced on race day.

Originally a trail used by the Wampanoag Native American tribe, Old Sandwich Road later became the nation’s first true public road and a stagecoach route to ferry passengers and mail back and forth between the Massachusetts towns of Plymouth and Sandwich. Today, the road remains pretty much as the Pilgrims left it–a wide, scenic, dirt road bordered by beautiful tall pine trees and towering oaks.

You can visit the Old Sandwich Road Race Web site at http://www.oldsandwichroadrace.com. Selected by Runner’s World, as “one of the five races not to miss in 2010”, The Old Sandwich Road Race also has pages on Facebook and Twitter. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring next year’s race, please contact Craig Valentine Brenner at 617-680-4230 or info@oldsandwichroadrace.com.

Man’s Best Friend captures the hearts of seniors on the South Shore. North River Home Care celebrates second anniversary of offering Pet Therapy.

March 14, 2011 //  by admin

Bogey immediately lights up the room. Residents and patients at various assisted living facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation facilities and hospitals consider his visit a highlight.

Bogey is a big, handsome chocolate Labrador retriever and is just one of the five certified pet therapy dogs who are proud partners of Norwell based North River Home Care.  The organization is entering its 3rd year providing Pet Therapy to senior care facilities throughout the South Shore.

“It is wonderful to see the joy the dogs bring to so many people” said Heather Kenney, owner of North River Home Care.  She added, “Therapy dogs seem to bring out the best in everyone. Many seniors are brought back to a happy time and place. Dogs are unconcerned with age or physical ability; they accept people as they are.”

The therapy dogs either tour a facility room-to room, or visit with a group of residents in a common area.

Therapy dogs come in all sizes and breeds. The most important characteristic of a therapy dog is its temperament. A good therapy dog must be friendly, patient, confident, gentle, and at ease in all situations. Therapy dogs must enjoy human contact and be content to be petted and handled, sometimes clumsily.

A therapy dog’s primary job is to allow unfamiliar people to make physical contact with it and to enjoy that contact.

Sandra Smith, Director of Community Relations for North River Home Care, commented, “There are a wide range of positive impacts of pet therapy.  It provides an enjoyable common interest and focus of conversation. Many seniors recall memories of their favorite family pet.” She added “Residents who are withdrawn often react positively to a friendly, trained dog, and become more engaged.  Pet therapy can reduce agitation and anxiety in those suffering from dementia. The interaction creates a sense of normalcy and helps them feel at home. People get to know the dogs and really look forward to our visits.”

The establishment of a systematic approach to the use of therapy dogs is attributed to Elaine Smith, an American who worked as a registered nurse for a time in England. Smith noticed how well patients responded to visits by a chaplain and his golden retriever. Upon returning to the United States in 1976, Smith started a program for training dogs to visit institutions. Over the years other health care professionals have noticed the therapeutic effect of animal companionship, such as relieving stress, lowering blood pressure, and raising spirits. The demand for therapy dogs continues to grow.

Many organizations provide testing and accreditation for therapy dogs. The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen test is generally a prerequisite for the Therapy Dog test and certification. Typical tests ensure that a dog can handle sudden loud or strange noises; can walk on assorted unfamiliar surfaces comfortably; are not frightened by people with canes, wheelchairs, or unusual styles of walking or moving.

North River Home Care provides companionship and assistance with the activities of daily living to seniors on the south shore.  Caregiver services are provided in-home, in assisted living facilities, or in rehab hospitals.  Services are customized to meet the needs of the individual and available up to 24 hours per day.

“We are delighted to offer this service at no cost to so many facilities” noted Kenney. “It’s one of the ways we give back to each community and to local seniors.  We encourage dog handlers to contact us to participate in this feel good program.”

North River Home Care is located at 320 Washington St. (Route 53) in Norwell. For more information, call 781-659-1366 or visit their website NorthRiverHC.com.
