Don’t Scuttle Away From Crab Grass.

August 27, 2015 //  by admin

Crabgrass Photo 08 26 15

From Boston to Cape Cod we love both the crab and grass—but put the two words put together and it is another story.  Unsightly in appearance and detrimental to the health of a lawn, crabgrass is the bane of many a lawn lover’s summer. Keep crab as a menu option and keep crabgrass off your lawn with the tips below.

Visually check your lawn for crabgrass that has already established as well as problem areas where it may sprout.  Scan your turf for soil that has become compacted. This usually develops where stationary equipment like wheel barrows or BBQ grills are kept as well as commonly used foot paths.  Compacted soil reduces the availability of water for desirable grass allowing heartier plants like crabgrass to grow and spread throughout your lawn.

Hand weeding is a biologically friendly and effective tactic for eradicating early infestations of crabgrass.  Horticulturist Mike McDonald of Lawn Doctor of Boston, Cape Cod and the South Shore suggests that “Hand weeding after a rainstorm or a watering regiment is a great time to get your hands dirty.” He goes on to explain that, “The moisture in the soil allows roots of problem plants to come free more easily and completely.”

Lawns with more crabgrass infestation may be more efficiently managed with the use of herbicidal products. Make sure to carefully read the instructions on such products.  Some herbicides are designed only for direct contact with problem plants, as they indiscriminately kill vegetation. McDonald cautions that, “As a general rule, herbicide shouldn’t be applied before a rain or watering. If applied incorrectly, these products may also negatively impact ground water.”

The best defense against crabgrass is preemptive planning. The same techniques that will make your lawn strong and lush also limits opportunities for problem plants like crabgrass to cultivate.  Simply keeping grass long and strong and maintaining soil that promotes irrigation can make sure you won’t feel crabby this time next summer.

As the tips above are general, an expert in lawn care is always the best option for assessing for a lawn’s needs.

Lawn Doctor is focused on working in harmony with the science of nature. Every service is designed to boost natural growth. This goes beyond the use of simple, green products. The company’s proprietary technology allows its lawn professionals to precisely measure and apply the optimum blend of nutrients and weed control – doing the right thing for your lawn and the environment.

A healthy lawn creates oxygen, removes dust and dirt, and filters water passing through its roots leaving pollutants behind and many more benefits. Lawn Doctor of Boston, the South Shore, and Cape Cod is a local, family owned and operated business serving over 6,000 homeowners in the Greater Boston region.  Main offices are located in Hanover, MA.

RI Chiropractors have your back for long road trips

Rhode Island…

You don’t need to be a chiropractor to know that sitting for long periods of time can lead to back stiffness. So, if you’re planning a long road trip to bring the kids back to school, sneak in a last minute summer vacation or getaway weekend, you should take some precautions for your back prior to hitting the road. The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island (CSRI) has some sound advice.

“There’s a real fear for people with back conditions that a long road trip could first ruin the trip and then have them in agony on the way back,” said Dr. Michael Gottfried, president of CSRI and a chiropractor at Aquidneck Chiropractic in Middletown, Rhode Island. “With stretching and a decent amount of rest stops—one every hour or so–you can usually minimize the impact of being seated for a long drive.”

The first and most obvious element to the comfortable long drive is the car seat. If you’re not currently driving a vehicle with a good seat and proper lumbar support, Dr. Gottfried recommends looking into a rental that has a comfortable seat or buying a lumbar pillow as a less expensive alternative. In addition, he notes having the seat at the right settings for your height and body type.

“Many times, the seat settings can be a large part of the problem,” says Gottfried. “If you’re currently under a chiropractor’s care, do not be afraid to ask them to take a look at your car seat.”

Gottfried also recommends such subtle things as stretching before you get into the automobile and as you get out, as well as altering hand position on the wheel rather than keeping them in a fixed position (this can ease pressure and tension on the shoulders).

“There are many other things that make it possible for you to have a more comfortable ride, like getting a good night’s sleep the night before and keeping yourself hydrated,” said Gottfried. “Even your music selection is important. Playing soothing music can help with minimizing tension, particularly during stressful traffic situations. Plus, if this is an overnight trip, make sure you have a comfortable bed waiting for you at the end of your destination.”

The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island, founded in 1918, is one of the oldest chiropractic associations in the country and represents over 60 of the practicing chiropractic physicians in the state of RI. Chiropractic is the largest non-drug health care profession in the US. The chiropractic profession has been affording relief for many types of health conditions naturally, without drugs and their potentially harmful side-effects, for over 100 years.

Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island is located at 1272 West Main Road, Building 2, Middletown, RI 02842. For more information, call (401) 207-0700 or visit www.RIchiro.org.
