HANOVER, MA…
It seems each season has its own clothes cleaning challenge that makes trips to the dry cleaner inevitable. For summer, it’s humidity and excessive perspiration. For winter, the season with the most inclement weather in most parts of the U.S., salt is the culprit. And with every snow storm comes the probability that your trousers will need cleaning if you venture out into any street or sidewalk that’s been plowed and salted.
Of course, that doesn’t always mean a trip to the dry cleaners is necessary. If you read the label of your clothing carefully, you may be able to treat those clothes at home.
“How annoying is it to have your nicest slacks dirtied by salt for just a quick walk down the street to feed a meter or catch a bus or cab? As annoying as that might be, the real danger is that the salt will ruin the slacks if you don’t treat it right away,” said Kevin Dubois, CEO of Lapels Dry Cleaning, an innovative, environmentally friendly dry cleaning company based in Hanover, Mass.
Dubois recommends rinsing the effected parts of the slacks in water as soon as possible. If it’s a salt spot that’s gone unnoticed, you will probably have to soak in water for several hours. For pants that do not have to be dry-cleaned, wash the stained areas in liquid detergent. If the stains do not come out, try soaking the pants in cold water with a laundry-detergent booster or oxy product. If those fail, use a stain remover like Shout or Spray N Wash and let sit for 10 minutes.
“It’s important to get the stain out or as much of it out as possible before you put the pants in the laundry machine,” said Dubois. “It’s also advisable to wash the pants separately in the machine to prevent the salt from mixing with your other clothes.”
Unfortunately, the only solution for dry clean only pants is a trip to the dry cleaner. Dubois does note you can attempt to get rid of salt stains using a home dry cleaning kit if you prefer not to go to a dry cleaner.
Prior to using the kit, Dubois recommends dampening the salt-stained area with a light water mist. Blot away the moisture to see if the stain has come out. If not, use the stain remover from the home dry cleaning kit and clean as directed.
“The home dry cleaning kits are good up to a certain point. Obviously, I’m a tad biased, but there really isn’t a substitute for having your clothes dry cleaned professionally,” said Dubois. “Most dry cleaners offer daily or weekly specials on their website or Facebook pages so that if you time it right, you can reduce costs. It’s worth looking into, particularly if the pants are part of a suit and essentially irreplaceable.”
Over the past dozen years, Lapels has pioneered its eco-friendly dry cleaning experience. Using the latest technology in equipment and cleaning solution, Lapels is one of the few dry cleaners around to be able to boast that there is no hazardous waste in their process. Lapels environmentally-friendly cleaning process has no odor and is gentler on clothes, thus lengthening the life of clothes. At Lapels you can see, feel and smell the difference.

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS…
Paper or plastic? For Emerson Bearing, a Boston based bearing company catering to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets throughout the world, the answer is both as the company recently launched a new division to supply bearings and related products to the plastics industry (the company had previously launched a paper converting, pulp and printing division last year).
“In the film The Graduate, one of Benjamin Braddock’s father’s friends advised him to get into plastics, that there was a great future there. Based on the research we’ve done, we couldn’t agree more and we’re extremely excited about expanding our efforts in this area,” said Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing, Inc.
Katz notes the plastic industry is dominated by two major categories: extruders and injection molding machines. Both areas depend greatly on the reliability and durability of its bearings.
In an extruder, the processed plastic is pressed thru a nozzle into a profiled die. The extruder gearbox is subject to high torques as well as high radial and axial loads. This places major importance on the monitoring of bearings and replacement in a timely fashion.
Injection molding machines are used for the production of parts in large quantities. The screw feed and the linear bearings must be insensitive to heat and vibration and have high basic static and dynamic load ratings. Again, regular monitoring, maintenance and replacement of bearings are critical to keeping production schedules.
“We’ve had great results with some existing clients in the plastics industry. With this new division, with dedicated marketing and customer service staff for this industry, we will be better equipped to serve current clients and attract new plastics industry clients,” said Katz.
To date, Emerson Bearing has worked several plastic manufacturers. That includes a company in North Carolina that produces plastic wine corks, a manufacturer that produce plastic bags (including bio degradable plastic bags), and a manufacturer that produces plastic strapping.
“The interesting thing about plastics is the industry itself is a very strong indicator of how the economy is doing,” said Katz. “During the recession in 2008, the plastic strapping company was only operating seven of its 12 production lines two shifts per day. Right now, they are back to three shifts, 24/7. Maybe The Graduate was on to something.”
Emerson Bearing Marketing Specialist Bill Zylicz is responsible for the Plastics Industry division. He can be reached by e-mail at bzylicz@emersonbearing.com or by calling 1.866.995.8762.
The Emerson Bearing Difference
In a proud tradition, the same families that started the company in 1957 keep Emerson Bearing rolling by specializing in bearings for OEM and MRO markets across the country. Emerson Bearing has a staff of 22 and a 23,000 square foot facility to provide bearings ranging in size from 3mm to tunnel-boring 15-foot-diameter giants.
Emerson Bearing offers customers a one-stop shopping experience. With an online product catalog with over 3 million bearings; a vast inventory of bearings; worldwide sourcing; a fixed price program; a knowledgeable staff dedicated to delivering; same day shipping and 24/7 service, Emerson Bearing has become the leading provider of bearings to OEM and MRO markets in the U.S. Emerson Bearing maintains headquarters at 201 Brighton Ave. Boston, MA. AVON, MA…
SelecTech, Inc., a leader in the manufacture of innovative flooring products from recycled materials, in partnership with Wolfgang Warmbier, the premier static-control products supplier in Europe, recently unveiled their EcoStat products to the European market last month at the Productronica 2013 fair in Munich, Germany. EcoStat flooring products can create a static controlled environment that’s perfect for industries that utilize electronics and data.
Billed as the leading international trade for innovative electronics, Productronica 2013 drew visitors and exhibitors from around the world.
“One of the reasons we partnered with Wolfgang Wambier was to get exposure for our EcoStat products at major international conferences like Productionica,” said Thomas Ricciardelli, president of SelecTech, Incorporated. “To walk out of that show with our first order for 100 square meters as well as several leads is precisely the kind of start we were looking for.”
In addition to its anti-static qualities that make it perfect for the electronics manufacturing, communications, aerospace, biotech, healthcare industries, and other high-tech industries, EcoStat products employ a breakthrough interlocking technology that dramatically reduces installation times. This technology completely bypasses the need for adhesives and floor prep to install or replace flooring. Because machinery does not have to be completely moved or removed for installation, downtime for businesses can be minimized or even eliminated altogether.
“No matter where your business is located, shutting down your operations to replace flooring is costly. That expense can be a staggering cost for a business open for a normal 8- to 10-hour work day, never mind one that runs 24/7,” said Ricciardelli. “Combine the installation savings with static-control elements of our EcoStat products and you have a winning solution to flooring replacements for any number of industries.”

SOUTH WEYMOUTH, MA…
“Brush your teeth!” It’s the mantra parents have imparted on their children since the beginning of time. Based on recent evidence linking excellent gum tissue health to a reduction in atherosclerosis—a major contributor to coronary disease–a new trend may be children reminding their parents to brush better and more frequently.
Artherosclerosis is the thickening of arteries through the accretion of calcium, cholesterol and other substances found in the bloodstream. This condition has been linked to fatal cardiovascular complications like coronary heart disease and peripheral arterial disease. According to the findings from researchers from the Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, flossing, brushing and regular trips to the dentist can slow the rate of atherosclerosis.
“When people are trying to live a healthier lifestyle, the first things they talk about are eating right and exercise. This report makes a strong case that improving your oral hygiene should be part of the healthier living package,” said Dr. Richard Wolfert, a South Weymouth, Mass.-based dentist also known as “The Toothboss”.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, killing about 600,000 people each year. That accounts for one-fourth of all recorded fatalities. On average, deaths and illnesses associated with coronary heart disease cost the U.S $109 billion annually.
“Part of what makes the results of this study so important is that it shows people a way to improve their heart health that’s really affordable,” said Wolfert. “We’re not talking about a special diet or medication that maybe a significant investment. For merely the cost of brushing your teeth twice a day for a minimum of two minutes, flossing daily, and visiting your dentist at his recommended interval (which can vary depending on each patient needs) can protect you from the devastating results of heart disease.”
Adds Wolfert, “If a patient has adequate home care the costs to see a dentist regularly, even without dental insurance, amounts to a few hundred dollars a year. If a patient has a good insurance plan, many preventive procedures are covered at almost 100 percent with a very small amount of copayment.”
For complete results of the survey, you can see the entire report on the American Heart Association’s website at http://jaha.ahajournals.org/content/2/6/e000254.abstract
Dr. Wolfert’s practice is located at 1121 Main Street in South Weymouth, Massachusetts, and accepts most insurance plans. They also accept payment from most PPO and indemnity plans, including Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Delta Dental.

FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS…
Apollo Safety, Inc. a veteran-owned, Fall River, Mass.-based company specializing in safety products and services, recently announced the formation of a special division to serve wastewater treatment facility clients. The new division will feature extensive offerings for wastewater treatment facilities as it pertains to gas detection equipment, maintenance and monitoring.
“By their very nature, wastewater treatment plants require special precautions. For starters, we are talking about a confined space that has daily exposure to chlorine gas as part of the drinking water treatment and hydrogen sulfide on the waste treatment side. With our special division, we can offer a greater level of service for wastewater treatment facilities so they can proactively address the risks they face on a daily basis,” said John V. Carvalho III, president of Apollo Safety, Inc.
Those offerings include a wide variety of portable and stationary gas detection systems suitable for wastewater treatment plants, including name brands like Industrial Scientific, RAE Systems, RKI, and GMI. These systems are available for purchase or rental at weekly or monthly rates. Rental equipment is certified to NIST standards and is guaranteed for the entire rental period.
In addition, Apollo Safety also provides on-site installation and training and 24/7 service. All Apollo Safety technicians are factory-trained and certified. In addition, Apollo offers its own training program, with five levels of certification. Apollo Safety technicians must be Level II or higher to service a wastewater treatment gas detection system.
“The advanced training our technicians receive provides an added level of safety and security for our clients,” said Carvalho. “Because of the training our techs receive, they can spot potential problems much sooner than techs without that training. That extra level of training can mean averting a major problem before it has the potential to become a tragedy. Or diagnosing a minor problem as part of a regular maintenance check that undetected could end up being a $4,000-5,000 repair.”
Apollo Safety provides service in a “state of the art” in-house service center, as well as offering on-site support with factory-trained technicians for both portable and stationary gas detection systems. Apollo uses only factory-original parts for repairs and repairs are made exactly to client requirements. Apollo guarantees a 10-day turnaround time with pre-approval, though 66 percent of all repairs are completed in five days or less. Free software upgrades included with all repairs.

PLYMOUTH, MA…
As an incoming freshman, it can be difficult to stand out at a school the size of Plymouth South. In spite of the challenge of being the new kids on the block, 26 Plymouth South freshman have managed to distinguish themselves quite early in their high school careers, achieving a perfect attendance record and making the honor roll for the first term. For that, they were recently honored as winners of the Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac’s Driven Student of the Month Award.
“Freshmen have a lot of adjustments to make when entering high school, including a heavier homework load. The best way to absorb all the new things they are learning is to be here and study. This group of kids has done that,” said Marc Loranger, assistant vice principal and director of Plymouth South’s freshman academy. “What makes their accomplishment even more special is that these are the only students in the entire school—including upper classmen—who made honor roll and had perfect attendance.”
For being chosen as the Driven Students of the Month, the group received a pizza party courtesy of Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac.
“Perfect attendance for more than a quarter is a noteworthy accomplishment on its own. To couple that with making the honor roll, that’s really impressive,” said Joe Wilkerson, general sales manager at Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac. “In selecting Driven Students, we look for kids who are going above and beyond inside and outside the classroom. These students have shown themselves to be very worthy recipients of our Driven Student Award.”
Students selected for the Driven Student Award include: James Addison, Andrew Armenio, Alexandra Birch, Emily Cannon, Tyler Chiocchio, Robert Colbert, Sydni Dabkowski, Sarah Donlan, Caroline Elrick, Samuel Ferreira, Laura Francis, Alyssa Goyette, Cameron Hunter, Shannon Lyons, Andrew Mahoney, Emily Manson, Kevin McManus, Nicole Mullally, Eileen Murphy, Elizabeth O’keefe, Jabon Rooney, Emily Spillane, Allysia Tavekelian and David Trombly.
Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac’s Driven Student program recognizes Plymouth high school students for their performance and achievements in and out of the classroom. Awarded on a monthly basis, recipients are selected by faculty and advisors at the student’s given school.
