Emerson Bearing Announces Printing Division

August 12, 2013 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets around the world, has experienced increased demand for bearings and related products for prepress, offset, digital printing and paper converting, and established a Printing Division to specifically cater to these markets.

Rick Piracini, an industry solutions expert with more than a decade of experience, will oversee converting and printing clients of Emerson Bearing Boston’s Printing division, while industry expert Lee Holt oversees pulp and paper clients. They assist clients in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of the bearing in relation to the application.

“At every point in the process of going from pulp to print these bearings have to meet the highest standards. In the initial phase of creating paper the rolling bearings in a paper machine must meet extreme requirements: Moisture, very high temperatures, shaft deflections, high speeds and long running times,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing Boston.

Paper Converting

The process of converting paper into a usable form has very different bearing requirements. Slitters and rewinders require high-speed ball bearings and linear motion bearings that have high running accuracy.

Printing

To achieve the required pin sharp print quality, Emerson Bearing Boston provides high precision and wear free bearing supports for the print rollers. This insures that the impression cylinder is supported with as little clearance, and as much rigidity as possible and with very few runout errors. The NAO style needle bearing with offset cage packets has become the standard. Needle rollers, Cam Followers and yoke rollers are used extensively in the distributor roller drives, gripper shaft controls and throughout the presses. Other related products available through Emerson Bearing include: ball bearings, needle bearings, roller bearings, linear motion, free running, mounted units, oil seals, cam followers and rod ends.

Emerson Bearing Boston provides special solutions to printing and paper converting clients such as a special high speed lubricant as well as the use of ‘free running’ insert bearings and pillow blocks. These have modified seals and slingers on both sides, which allow for low start up torque and effective sealing even in high heat applications.

“The printing industry has made a come-back. Due to the increased demand, we’ve created an entire division to specifically cater to their needs,” noted Katz.

Product Engineers Call Upon Emerson Bearing Boston for Bearing Expertise During R&D

March 20, 2013 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, providers of bearing and related products for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets around the globe, is much more than a bearings supplier. The company’s bearing experts often consult with product engineers during product research and development.

Recent design innovations where Emerson Bearing Boston played a key role in the development of specific bearings for robotics and automation in the health care industry include ErgoNurse®, which is a bed repositioning system that enables medical staff to single-handedly reposition patients without manually lifting them. The company also assisted in the development of a custom, thin, air-frame style bearing for a Boston-based manufacturer of prosthetics.

According to Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing Boston, “We often have clients come to us with a specific bearing need. Our prosthetic manufacturing client required a control bearing which allowed for replication of the movement of the ankle. We developed a thin section bearing that is very precise and able to endure high loads at low speed, in other words, a bearing that supports a human’s weight and movement.”

Emerson Bearing Boston’s bearing expertise has also been tapped in the design of the system for the spare tire on the back of Humvee and Hummers.

Katz continued, “Our clients are innovators. They are creating products for the next generation and we’re honored to advise them during product development.”

Emerson Bearing Boston Specializes in Bearings for Extreme Applications

September 24, 2012 //  by admin

Failed bearing
Got a dirty environment? Emerson Bearing Boston provides the bearings necessary for operation in extreme applications.

Catering to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets around the globe, Emerson Bearing Boston provides bearings that operate in unique performance conditions such as dirty and biohazardous environments; extremely hot/cold temperatures and environments where chemicals, radiation, speed/velocity and size play a major role.

“A dry dirty environment is typically an environment that generates some kind of dust. A wet dirty environment often involves water or a chemical that emulsifies with the oil (bearing lubricant), which causes the bearing to fail. To give you an example, worn seals on linear bearings that are used in a dirty environment will enable contamination. Even with the best design, lubrication and installation, bearing failure will occur if the operating environment is not taken into consideration,” explained Steve Katz, the company’s president.

Katz outlines the primary environmental influences below:

-Dust and dirt, which can aggressively contaminate a bearing. Great care should be given to use proper sealing techniques.

-Aggressive media or water. Once again, sealing is primary. The use of specialty type seals is recommended such as Pump Mechanical or Labyrinth style seals that do not score the shaft.

-External heat. The ambient operating temperature mandates many choices in Radial Internal Clearance, high temperature lubricants, intermittent or continuous running and others, which affect bearing life.

-Current passage or electrolytic corrosion. If current is allowed to flow through the rolling elements, sparks can create pitting or fluting on the bearing surfaces. This should be corrected by creating a bypass circuit for the current or through the use of insulation on or within the bearing. This should be an inherent design consideration in applications such as Wind Turbines and all power generating equipment.

Katz continued, “Our team of bearing experts can advise customers on the right solution for bearings running in extreme applications.”

By Land and By Sea – Emerson Bearing Boston has a new Niche

August 7, 2012 //  by admin

Boston based Emerson Bearing, a company that is renowned for their vast inventory of bearings and speedy 24/7 service to land-based customers, has identified a new niche of seafaring customers. As one of the largest providers of bearings and related products to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets nationally and internationally, Emerson Bearing Boston has seen their sales swell and found a new niche catering to port authorities and the marine spares industry.

“Shore to Ship” Fulfillment

Joe Falvey, Marketing Specialist oversees Emerson Bearing Boston’s Marine Division. Typically, Falvey’s point of contact for bearing orders is the ship’s chancellor. Once an order is placed, Emerson Bearing often meets the ship to fulfill the order. The company has a growing New England customer base which includes a number of commercial shipping and fishing boat accounts, as well as a number of national and international customers such as Guam Shipyard, a large industrial contractor for the U.S. Navy.

The Marine Spares industry and Port Authorities require constant “uptime” as they exist in a 24/7 work environment. Whether bearings and related products are needed for driveshafts, overhead cranes, fork lift trucks or other applications, Emerson Bearing Boston’s 24/7 service and inventory are critical to their operations.

Emerson Bearing provides Split Roller bearings, which allow for rapid bearing replacement especially at difficult to access locations, such as driveshafts. For the Sheave wheels, cranes and tensioner blocks, Emerson Bearing recommends the SL Sheave Wheel bearings because they provide extra high dynamic and static load ratings and come with rubber seals to prevent water and dust intrusion. Additional related products that Emerson Bearing carries include: Sheave Wheel Bearings, Split Spherical Roller Bearings, Craft Split Bearing, Ball Bearings, Roller Bearings, Leaf Chain, V Belts, Hydraulic Cylinders, Pumps, Oil seals and Isolator Seals.

To keep the unloading process from slowing down, Emerson Bearing Boston can provide cut to length Leaf Chain forklift chain on a 24-hour basis. Plus, the company’s worldwide freight relationships better enable them to serve markets around the world – and literally meet a ship at port if necessary to deliver bearings.

According to Steve Katz, the company’s president, “Some of our clients are halfway around the world and they know they can count on us. They have placed their confidence in us and we deliver, whether it’s a large job or a small repair where they may just need oil seals. Accuracy on promised delivery dates is crucial. For customers such as Guam Shipyard, the vessels are scheduled to arrive in port at a certain time and once they pull in, the clock starts. Everything runs on a schedule and there are repercussions for any delays. That’s where we really set ourselves apart from competitors; we’re efficient, cost-effective and reliable.”

To reach Joe Falvey in the Marine division, contact 866-995-8760 or email jfalvey@emersonbearing.com.
