Emerson Bearing Boston offers tips and a special online guide for enhancing bearing performance and service life

May 24, 2021 //  by admin

Choosing the proper bearing lubricant can help keep a facility’s machinery safe and operational. Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets, offers tips for proper bearing lubricant selection and a complimentary online “Bearing Maintenance Guide”.

Grease or lubricant selection can make a huge difference in the performance and life span of a piece of equipment or system. While the proper lubricant can ensure smooth and reliable performance, the wrong lubricant can result in frequent maintenance and service outages.

Emerson Bearing

For industrial applications, bearing lubricants come in three basic forms: oils and fluid lubricants; semi-solid or solid grease products (which are similar to fluid lubricants but also include a thickening agent); and dry lubricant powders and films for precise placement.

Below, Emerson Bearing offers five grease/lubricant selection tips:

– The machinery system and its operating conditions dictate which form and makeup of lubricant are the most suitable for use.

– Because lubricants need to be able to withstand heat and reduce friction, the most important factors to consider when selecting a lubricant are operating speeds, minimum and maximum system, and the viscosity of the lubricant in that range of operating temperatures.

– Different greases should not be combined unless the product directions explicitly allow for such mixtures. Instead, look for specialty greases and lubricants specifically designed for the conditions of the machinery and systems.

– Mixing two or more greases, with different base oils together, may result in a final lubricant product that loses many of the individual products’ unique benefits.

– It’s critical to match the service life of the grease to the service life of the bearing.

Special Guide for Keeping Bearings in Optimal Condition

The key to preventing bearing failure and maximizing bearing longevity is through proper maintenance. Learn more about lubrication and how to keep your system’s bearings in optimal condition and increase their operational lifespan through Emerson Bearing’s complimentary “Bearing Maintenance Guide”.

Emerson Bearing’s guide discusses the tips and steps to avoid preventable conditions and best practices to maximize bearing efficiency. It also addresses overall handling and storage guidelines, protection tips for each type of bearing, and additional resources to analyze first signs of bearing failure.

“We are dedicated to helping customers not only find the right bearing for their application, but the right lubrication to enhance bearing performance and extend service life,” said Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing. “Our online library contains the comprehensive information needed with regard to the selection, application and maintenance of bearings.”

Emerson Bearing Boston expands line of innovative bearing solution for heavy load applications

September 15, 2020 //  by admin

From military and defense equipment to mining, manufacturing, transportation and even industrial bottling technologies, bearing selection plays a critical role when it comes to heavy load applications that require great freedom of movement.

Emerson Bearing

Emerson Bearing, based in Boston, is expanding their line of Slewing Ring Bearings, an innovative bearing solution that offers a number of unique benefits over other ball and roller bearings.

Precision slewing ring bearings are a type of angular bearing that consist of two concentric rings with balls or rollers that enhance movement in load-bearing and power transmission applications. The two rings may be constructed with toothed gears to increase torque and can facilitate movement in any direction from the center of the bearing.

What Sets Slewing Ring Bearings Apart

Slewing ring bearings have the load carrying capacity as well as high material stiffness to ensure sufficient support in rigid bearing applications. They also provide 360-degree joint support for complex load bearing systems, which allows for concurrent movement on multiple axes. Slewing ring bearings have a shaftless design and are valuable for their low-friction and freedom of movement. All of these advantages result in an extended service life.

The versatility and efficiency of slewing ring bearings makes them ideal for use in a range of industries. Common applications include:

– Missile launchers, tank turrets and optical devices in the Military and Defense industry. Slewing ring bearings are often used in military and defense equipment that must direct heavy loads with a high degree of precision.

– The construction industry, particularly in load-bearing and lifting applications such as lifts, cranes, hydraulic excavators and borers.

– Industrial bottling applications including sanitization, washing capping, and labeling functions. The 360-degree rotation of slewing rings makes them especially useful.

– Mining excavation and tunnel boring, where equipment must be able to move freely under heavy loads.

– Transportation such as trains, trams, and subways. Slewing rings are often used to facilitate free and easy vehicle movement.

“Our bearing experts can assist in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of bearings in relation to the application,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing Boston.

Emerson Bearing Boston Offers High Voltage Solution for Marine, Manufacturing, Industrial and HVAC Industries

May 8, 2020 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, has expanded their bearing line to include Shaft Grounding Devices, which reduce the risk of danger and protect motor bearings from damage.

Motor shaft voltages have the potential to damage the components around them. If a shaft’s voltage exceeds the insulation capabilities of nearby cables or parts, it can cause both long-term and acute damage to motor bearings. Some high voltages can even lead to arcing between the shaft and the bearing. When this occurs, the arcing rapidly elevates the temperature of the bearing. Metal can vaporize and become permanently damaged and pitted from this process.

Shaft grounding devices are a cost-efficient solution to preventing the currents produced by shaft voltage. They are utilized in a number of industries, including Marine, Manufacturing, Industrial and HVAC.

Shaft voltage can occur for a number of reasons. Usually, it can be traced back to leakages or induction. Some external sources may even influence the likelihood of shaft voltage occurring. Rubber belts creating friction against drive pulleys and other nearby coupled machines are a few examples of these. AC and DC motors with variable frequency drives (VFD) often produce induced electrical currents on the motor shaft.

Emerson Bearing includes top brand Helwig Carbon shaft-mounted grounding devices, which are the most economical means of protecting bearings from electrical discharge. AC systems with VFD control and DC motors with pulse width modulation (PWM) drives benefit greatly from this added security. Grounding provides a low-impedance path for shaft voltage to travel through. Currents are forced away from bearings and voltage is prevented from building gradually over time on rotors. This simple technology is all it takes to dramatically reduce the risk of danger or property damage.

Helwig Carbon shaft-mounted grounding devices offer exceptional bearing protection and prevent failure. With sizes available for both large and small motors and internal mounting capabilities, they’re ideal for a number of applications, including: HVAC units; Pump motors; Fans; Air-handling equipment; Compressors; Elevators; Data centers; Chillers; and Conveyors.

Shafts ranging from 6mm (.2500”) to 225mm (9.000”) are available. Sealed options also increase resistance in contaminated environments like wash-down applications.

“Grounding devices are the most effective technology for minimizing shaft voltage and often outlast the units they’re installed on,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing Boston. “Grounding devices are the smartest choice an organization can make when it comes to protecting their people and their equipment from dangerous, damaging currents.”

Preventing electrical bearing damage – Emerson Bearing Boston offers a solution.

February 27, 2020 //  by admin

When a bearing is exposed to an electric current, it can cause electrical bearing damage, which manifests as pits and grooves on the bearings’ surface. This creates an uneven surface texture causing additional noise, vibration, and (eventually) complete failure. It is a costly problem, often leading to unnecessary downtime and expensive repairs or upgrades.

Railroads are one application in particular where electrical current causing pitting is a major cause of bearing failure. Other applications where extra bearing protection is necessary include motors with variable frequency drives (VFDs), pump motors, HVAC units, refrigeration, compressors, generators and data centers.

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, offers a solution for preventing electrical bearing damage – replacing standard bearings with ceramic hybrid ball bearings.

Although not all bearings are damaged by an electrical current and not all circuits cause bearing damage, the problem typically occurs when equipment is grounded incorrectly or when bearings are used in AC/DC motors with VFDs.

Ceramic Hybrid Bearing Benefits

Ceramic hybrid bearings consist of ceramic rolling balls and an inner and outer steel race. Ceramic bearings provide a level of insulation that eliminates electric arcing and fluting. They also feature double shielding and non-conductive properties and low temperature rise under extreme operating conditions. For example, Nachi ceramic hybrid ball bearings are one of the most durable replacements for traditional steel bearings. They are dimensionally interchangeable with most bearings, which eliminates the need for special modifications during the installation process, facilitates the replacement process, and makes them a more cost-effective replacement option.

“Apart from their tremendous insulating properties, there are many other advantages to switching to ceramic hybrid ball bearings – such as safer operation in extreme conditions, a wider range of speed capabilities and longer bearing life span,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing Boston.

He continued, “Bearings can be damaged by electrical current, as well as many other environmental and operational factors. Understanding these factors and the risks they possess is the best way to prevent costly repairs, downtime, or operator injuries associated with damaged or failed components.”

Emerson Bearing Boston announces Pump Industry Division

December 31, 2019 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, has established a Pump Industry division dedicated to a fast-growing customer base, particularly in the oil and gas market.

Emerson Bearing’s Marketing Specialist Richard Furtado oversees the division. Furtado assists clients in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of the bearing in relation to the application.

Pumps, which move liquids through pressure, and compressors, which condense and transport air/gas may be found in just about every industry. From oil and gas to chemical processing, waste and water treatment, power generation, paper and mining, there are pumps and compressors working behind the scenes and around the clock.

Most applications utilize ball and cylindrical roller bearings, which are designed to withstand heavy radial loads, operate with low noise and vibration and have long service intervals.

Proper bearing selection is key to ensuring the pump’s optimal performance. Emerson Bearing recommends bearings that have been developed specifically for these rugged demands. They offer extra capacity and reliability through unique rolling element, cage geometries and high heat stabilization. These are especially designed to meet the harshest of API-60 pump standards. Four-point contact bearings are unique with their split inner ring. They accommodate high axial loads in either direction and in some cases, can replace a pair of angular contact bearings.

High performance lubricants and polymer filled cages can provide extended performance at a relatively low cost. For roller chain use in oil field or similar high stress applications, Emerson Bearing recommends chain that meets API 7F7 standards.

“We cater to a number of oil and gas clients in Texas and throughout the far west,” said Steve Katz, president. “Our pump, compressor and oil field market has grown significantly over the past couple of years. Our clients know they can rely on us for our vast inventory, competitive pricing and overall reliability.”

Emerson Bearing offers a number of video tutorials, including “The Role of Emerson Bearing in the Pump and Motor Industry”, available at https://www.emersonbearing.com/video-tutorials/
