South Shore Skin Center offers Teens Tips for Acne Flare-Ups

August 29, 2013 //  by admin

COHASSET AND PLYMOUTH, MA…As teens head back to school, many of them will have to face their peers while suffering from an acne breakout.

Acne affects almost everyone at some point in their lives, and teenagers can expect to experience at least one agonizing acne episode. The hardest hit are teenage boys. The good news is that eating chocolate or French fries does not cause acne. The bad news is that acne is typically caused by hormone fluctuations, which is something teens can’t control.

South Shore Skin Center offers these tips to help teens ward off acne flare-ups:

· Wash (don’t scrub) your face twice a day with a very gentle soap or water based skin cleanser. Oil and dead skin cells are typically the cause of pimples, so avoid any cleansers that contain oil such as cold creams.

· Never squeeze your pimples as it can cause an infection, worse acne and potentially scar your skin.

· Try using an over-the-counter product that is designed to unclog pores and dry up oil and blemishes (such as Clearasil or Stri-Dex). Be sure to follow the package instructions. Too much use of these over-the-counter medications may actually cause acne to become worse.

· Try not to touch your face. Although you can’t see it, your hands contain oil which is transferred when you touch your face and can cause a breakout.

· Your hair is another culprit that can transfer oil to your face. Find a hairstyle that keeps hair away from your face and do not use a lot of hair gel or other hair products because they tend to contain oil.

· Sunlight can actually aggravate acne. Try to limit your sun exposure. If you are going to be in the sun, be sure to wear (oil-free) sunscreen.

“Acne is caused by overproduction of sebum (oil), which is regulated by hormones, coupled with the obstruction of the pores. People can get acne at any age, but teens are most likely to experience it because it is triggered by hormone changes. Stress and some prescription medications can contribute to hormone fluctuation. Acne is not caused by foods such as chocolate and greasy French fries. In fact, severe acne is hereditary,” explained Ramzi W. Saad, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center.

While most acne sufferers’ breakouts are not serious and do not result in scarring, at least 40 percent of all cases need to be treated by a physician.

For severe acne (up to a hundred or so pimples covering face and body) that may potentially result in scarring, South Shore Skin Center offers several types of treatments.

Dr. Saad continued, “Most cases of teen acne are not severe and can be treated at home. For severe acne and scarring, medical treatment is advisable and we offer several innovative therapies to heal and improve the skin.”

South Shore Skin Center Announces 2nd Anniversary of Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit & New Surgeon

June 14, 2013 //  by admin

Navid Bouzari, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon

South Shore Skin Center celebrates the second anniversary of their Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit located at One Scobee Circle in Plymouth, and announces the addition of Navid Bouzari, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon.

As one of only two Mohs micrographic surgical centers for skin cancer in Southeastern Mass., the Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit offers the highest level of skin cancer care for patients located on Cape Cod and south of Boston. The treatment center is led by Richard F. Eisen, M.D., a Board Certified Dermatologist and highly skilled Mohs micrographic surgeon.

Dr. Eisen is joined by Navid Bouzari, M.D. a Boston-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon. Dr. Bouzari is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is on staff at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth and Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American College of Mohs Surgeons, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Melanoma Skin Cancer Committee of the American Academy of Dermatology. He is an internationally published author on dermatological issues and diseases.

The Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit is conveniently located, reducing the need for patients on the South Shore to travel long distances through high traffic areas to receive Mohs surgery. Appointments are scheduled in a timely manner to minimize wait times for patients awaiting skin cancer treatment. The 2,780 square foot surgical center houses seven surgical suites, a histotech laboratory, nursing suite and a spacious reception area. On-site free parking is available. New patients and referrals are accepted.

The Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit works closely with a patient’s primary care physician or dermatologist to ensure the highest level of communication and care in the treatment and management of all types of skin cancer.

About Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Mohs micrographic surgery is special skin cancer surgery performed at the Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit that is very precise and removes the least amount of tissue to remove the cancer with the highest cure rates. This type of surgery is used to treat basal and squamous cell carcinomas as well as melanoma. It is ideal for skin cancer on the face, instances of recurring cancer and large or ill-defined areas of cancer.

“The number of cases of skin cancer is rising rapidly in the greater Boston area, particularly on the South Shore,” explained Dr. Eisen.

He continued, “The Skin Cancer Surgery Unit is well-situated at the half-way point between Boston and Cape Cod and conveniently located at exit 7 off Route 3. Our accessibility and our ‘no wait list’ for skin cancer surgery are a couple of reasons why we’ve been so successful.”

South Shore Skin Center Esthetician Earns Certification, Extends Spa Treatments to Those with Cancer

March 25, 2013 //  by admin

Mary F. Rico
Plymouth based esthetician Mary F. Rico has completed certification in Clinical Oncology Esthetics® and expands South Shore Skin Center’s practice to serve individuals with, or recovering from, cancer. The certification prepares professional estheticians to provide safe, personalized spa treatments to individuals with health-challenged skin and is earned through Clinical Oncology Esthetics® training facilitated by Touch For Cancer.

Through Clinical Oncology Esthetics® (COE), Ms. Rico underwent extensive training in understanding how cancer and therapy treatments affect the body at the dermal and lymphatic level. The program explored the side effects of cancer therapies, how those are further compounded by various medications and the importance of proper sanitation to support weakened immune systems. Certification also required Ms. Rico to learn how to perform gentle, yet effective protocols using compatible skin care ingredients.

“Beyond keeping South Shore Skin Center on the cutting-edge, this certification will allow me to safely serve a new and very deserving base of individuals with health challenged skin,” Ms. Rico said. “My goal is that through the power of the esthetic touch, I can provide a soothing escape for individuals battling cancer.”

“Estheticians work with the largest organ on the human body – the skin,” said Morag Currin, founder of Touch For Cancer. “Understanding how to safely and effectively treat the skin, particularly when it is challenged by cancer is paramount to the psychological and physical care of the client.”

Ms. Rico will offer the specialized treatments beginning on April 1, 2013 at South Shore Skin Center in Plymouth located at One Scobee Circle, Unit 3.

About Touch For Cancer

Touch For Cancer’s Clinical Oncology Esthetics® training prepares licensed estheticians to provide comfort and relief during esthetic therapy treatments for clients undergoing treatment for, or recovering from, cancer. South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s Recent Skin Cancer Screening Clinic Reveals Potential New Cases of Melanoma

July 12, 2011 //  by admin

During National Melanoma/Skin Cancer Awareness Month (May), the dermatologists at South Shore Skin Center and Spa spotted several potential cases of melanoma during their free Skin Cancer Screening clinic held at their Plymouth practice.

According to Dr. Richard F. Eisen, Board Certified Dermatologist and Founding Physician/Director of South Shore Skin Center, who took part in the screenings that evening, “Melanoma is rising rapidly in New England and in particular in the South Shore area. At our recent screening, we diagnosed one severe case of melanoma and three potential new melanoma cases which may be confirmed cases after biopsy.”

100 people from the South Shore and Plymouth areas attended the free screening evening. The event was a collaboration between Jordan Hospital Club Cancer Center and South Shore Skin Center and Spa and supported by the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Cancer Society.

Many who attended had fair skin and/or had never had their skin checked before.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa providers who were screening patients along with Dr. Eisen included Dr. Ramzi W. Saad (partner at South Shore Skin Center and organizer of the annual screening event), Dr. Emily P. Tierney, Dr. Barry M. Austin, Dr. William W. Stocker, Jessica L. Bahros PA-C, Elizabeth J. McLeish PA-C and Vanessa H. Pollard PA-C. Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, Executive Director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation was also on hand with the Glow Vista Skin Analyzer taking high definition profile photos which showed attendees the extent of their skin’s UV damage.

“New England has the highest concentration of melanoma cases in the United States. It is the most common cancer in young white women ages 25-29 and second only to breast cancer in women ages 30-34. This is the first time we have seen such a significant number of cases at a screening of 100 people. It is an indication of just how common and serious skin cancers are. It cannot be stressed enough – the way to minimize melanoma mortality is to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays, to carefully perform monthly self-skin examinations and to obtain a skin cancer screening annually,” noted Dr. Saad.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa tips for preventing skin cancer:
Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.
Use ample amounts of sunscreen with a minimum SPF 30 every day, even if it is cloudy.
Wear protective clothing and large framed or wrap-around sunglasses to protect the eye area.
Have your skin checked by a dermatologist regularly.
Note any moles or other spots on the skin that have changed. Have them checked by a physician as soon as possible.
