October 31, 2012 //  by admin

Rodman & Rodman, P.C., an independent accounting and tax firm with offices in Newton and Braintree, announced that it has been named one of the 100 “Best Accounting Firms to Work for” by Accounting Today. This is the third consecutive year in which Rodman & Rodman has received this honor.

The annual list was created by Accounting Today and Best Companies Group to identify, recognize and honor the best places of employment in the accounting industry.

Accounting firms from across the country entered the two-part survey process to determine the Best Accounting Firms to Work for. The second part consisted of an employee survey to measure the employee experience. The combined scores determined the top firms and the final ranking. Best Companies Group managed the overall registration, survey and analysis process and determined the final rankings.

The list-making firms will be published in the December issue of Accounting Today. For more information on the Best Accounting Firms to Work for program, visit www.BestAccountingFirmstoWorkfor.com.

The Rodman & Rodman team is led by four partners: Steven P. Rodman CPA, MST, president; Kathy Parker CPA, MST; John P. McGovern CPA, ABV, CVA and Thomas Astore CPA, JD.

Rodman & Rodman’s Kathy Parker to be Feature Panelist at EUCI Renewable Energy Finance Conference

October 15, 2012 //  by admin

Kathy Parker, CPA, MST, Partner
Rodman & Rodman, P.C., an independent accounting and tax firm with offices in Newton and Braintree, MA, has announced that Kathy Parker, CPA, MST, will be a feature panelist at the EUCI Renewable Energy Finance Conference in San Francisco on December 3-4. Visit www.euci.com

Ms. Parker is a founding member of the Rodman & Rodman “Green Team,” a specialty accounting practice dedicated to providing alternative energy producers and other businesses that pursue energy efficiency initiatives with expert counsel and services in green energy tax, accounting, and business strategy. The team consists of experienced CPAs who are domain experts in alternative energy accounting and finances.

The EUCI Conference, “2013 Toolbox to Address the Uncertainty of Federal Incentives”, will address the challenges and opportunities for renewable energy projects, as the funding landscape adapts to a post-tax subsidy environment. In addition, the conference will outline steps that can be taken to build a robust and liquid secondary market which provides efficient pricing and optimal solutions for those both seeking capital and supplying it. The forum will also present a timely opportunity for participants to gauge the impacts and implications of the U.S. congressional and presidential voting results on the future of renewable energy project finance. Visit http://www.euci.com/events/?ci=1769&t=O

“As federal subsidies for alternative energy begin to diminish or even disappear over the next several years, project developers may have to find new revenue models as well as new sources of capital,” said Parker. “Proper corporate, project and partnership structuring as well as expert tax accounting will continue to play an important role in sustaining the health of this industry.”

Rodman & Rodman CPAs Outline 2012 Sales Tax Holiday for Consumers and Retailers

August 6, 2012 //  by admin

Massachusetts residents will be able to enjoy a Sales Tax Holiday weekend on August 11th and 12th.

“The Commonwealth of Massachusetts will not be collecting the 6.25 percent sales tax on tangible purchases of $2,500 or less that are for personal use,” explains Thomas Astore, CPA, JD, Partner at Rodman & Rodman, P.C. “Business purchases and purchases made by corporations remain taxable. All Massachusetts businesses normally open during this weekend and selling taxable items of tangible personal property are required to participate in this sales tax holiday.”

Rodman & Rodman, P.C., is a CPA firm specializing in tax expertise and business strategy for small and medium sized companies throughout New England and beyond.

According to Rodman, consumers will be able to enjoy tax savings in compliance with the following rules that will be in effect for the weekend:

  • Business purchases are excluded, which also means any purchase made with a business check or business credit card.
  • All services are excluded. Only tangible purchases are eligible. Airline tickets and sporting events are considered services.
  • Motor vehicles (which include ATVs and small motorcycles), motorized boats, telecommunications services (including prepaid calling arrangements and cards), gas, steam, electricity, tobacco products and meals are excluded from the sales tax holiday. But, telecommunications equipment (cell phones and related items for personal use) are eligible.
  • Any single item with a price that is in excess of $2,500 is excluded. If the single item’s price exceeds $2,500, it will be taxed in full. For example a $3,000 plasma TV will be taxed on the entire $3,000 sale price.
  • When more than one item is purchased at the same time, and each item has a price of $2,500 or less, then all of the items may be rung up on one receipt and all the items are tax-free.
  • There is no sales tax on clothing unless the sale price exceeds $175. For an article of clothing exceeding this amount, the $175 will be deducted from the price and the remaining amount will be taxed.
  • If a store coupon or discount provided by a retailer or manufacturer reduces the sales price of the item, the discounted sales price determines whether the sales price is within the sales tax holiday price threshold of $2,500 or less.
  • Prior sales and lay-a-ways do not qualify for the tax-free status under any circumstances.
  • Special order items such as furniture are eligible so long as they are ordered and paid in full on the sales tax holiday weekend, and the cost of each item is $2,500 or less, even if delivery is made at a later date.
  • Internet purchases are exempt from sales tax as long as they do not exceed $2,500 (and meet other criteria) and are made and paid for on August 11 or 12, Eastern Standard Time.

Rodman & Rodman’s Kathy Parker Cites Challenges of Tax Incentive Complexities at Massachusetts Solar Summit 2012

July 5, 2012 //  by admin

(L to R) Massachusetts Solar Summit panelists Craig Huntley, Principal at Solect Energy, a major Massachusetts-based solar developer and Kathy Parker, CPA, MST, Partner at Rodman & Rodman, P.C, and a member of the accounting firm’s “Green Team” Renewable Energy and Cleantech Practice.

“While IRS Section 1603 Tax credits, combined with Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECS), created a boom in the Massachusetts Solar Industry, many solar companies are sitting on an inventory of solar panels and other materials for projects that have not begun construction by the end of the 2011 eligibility period,” Kathy Parker, CPA told a standing room only audience at the 2012 Solar Summit in Marlborough, MA, on June 13, 2012. Parker is a Partner at Rodman & Rodman, P.C, and a member of the accounting firm’s “Green Team” Renewable Energy and Cleantech Practice.

“Although the 1603 tax code provides ‘Safe Harbor’ provisions, qualifying for this protection can be a tricky process” said Parker. “Much of the tax code is vague, and qualification will depend on how materials purchases were accounted for and assigned to specific projects,” explained Parker. “Qualification is often based on subjective decisions by IRS examiners”, noted fellow “Financial Side Panel” member Craig Huntley, Principal at Solect Energy, a major Massachusetts-based solar developer.

Parker went on to explain that as 1603 grants expire and solar projects begin to get larger, financing will become more complicated. Where smaller projects were often financed by individuals and S Corporations with passive income that could take advantage of tax credits, it will become a challenge to find investors with enough of a tax appetite to invest in larger projects. Project and partner structuring to take advantage of tax incentives will become increasingly important, noted Parker.

“Commercial lenders are becoming more comfortable evaluating solar projects as reasonable risks, but as projects get bigger they become more complicated as the number of products and participants grows,” noted David Costello, Senior VP – Commercial Lending at Commerce Bank & Trust Company. “Banks will demand full disclosure on all parties involved in a project,” said Costello.

Panel moderator, Vincent Devito, Partner at law firm Bowditch & Dewey, explained that the solar industry in Massachusetts remains vibrant, but the industry will continue to rely on state and federal subsidies to attract investors. “These subsidies provide accelerated payback that can be as short as three years,” said Devito.

Summit keynote speaker, Ann Berwick, Chair – MA Department of Public Utilities, pegged present installed solar power capacity at 110 MW, citing state goals to bring capacity to 250 MW by 2017 and 400 MW by 2020.

Rodman & Rodman CPAs Outline Proposed Changes in Biomass Efficiency Rates for Renewable Energy Credits Qualification

June 6, 2012 //  by admin

The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources (DOER) recently sent a finalized proposal of changes to the standards for biomass efficiency in the state. Rodman & Rodman, P.C. an independent accounting firm specializing in renewable energy projects with offices in Braintree and Newton, MA, outlines the proposed changes in biomass efficiency rates for REC qualification.

The original proposal called for a reduction in Renewable Energy Credits to be awarded by half for systems that were operating between 40 percent and 60 percent efficiency. The finalized proposal calls for a half credit to be awarded for systems operating between 50 percent and 60 percent efficiency. Systems operating below 50 percent would not qualify for the credit.

According to Steve Rodman, CPA, MST, President of Rodman & Rodman, “Biomass systems have been highly discussed since their initial use as to whether or not they are actually ‘renewable’. Some argue that the carbon released when burning woody materials in the system is the same as the carbon released when burning coal or other fossil fuels. Others argue that the carbon is being recaptured by the existing forests, and that the trees that are burned are replaced much faster than sources of coal and fossil fuels, making them a renewable source.”

He continued, “This is a major statement by the MA DOER. By requiring biomass systems to operate at 60 percent efficiency in order to qualify for the full credit, the DOER is establishing the need for these systems to be able to operate at a level that will hopefully reduce the amount of carbon that is re-released back into the atmosphere.”

Rodman stated that it would be a challenge for biomass projects that are getting started. They will need to get to at least 50 percent efficiency right away in order to see any credits. This will require biomass projects to take more time in the design and testing stages to ensure they comply with the efficiency requirements before going live.

The MA DOER is taking comments on this finalized proposal until mid-June, so there is a chance that these regulations may still be subject to change until they are fully enacted.
