Emerson Bearing Takes to the Stars

Emerson Bearing has been awarded a contract with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) to provide spherical roller bearings (sized at approximately two feet), for the Submillimeter Array (SMA), which is an 8-element radio interferometer located atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Emerson Bearing had to sign on with the SMA, was vetted and won approval to provide spare and repair bearings for the antenna elevation drives.

Emerson Bearing’s knowledgeable team assisted in determining the right bearing technologies by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of the bearing in relation to the application.
