Weston resident and award-winning builder constructs ENERGY STAR-certified, “dream green home” in Weston.

November 6, 2009 //  by admin

WESTON AND WALTHAM, MA…

As president of Meyer Homes, Craig Meyer, a Weston resident, builds upscale homes and communities that maintain the integrity of the environment. The completion of his latest project, a 12-room colonial located at 42 Coburn Road in Weston, takes on an added significance because it’s not only in his hometown of Weston, but it is Meyer Homes’ first project in partnership with the Massachusetts New Homes with ENERGY STAR program.

The Massachusetts New Homes with ENERGY STAR program is a new construction program based on an energy efficiency standard developed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). ENERGY STAR qualified homes are at least 15 percent more energy-efficient than homes built to the 2004 International Residential Code (IRC).

“The term ‘green’ has been thrown quite around these days without a clear cut definition of what that actually means,” said Meyer. “Partnering with the Massachusetts New Homes with ENERGY STAR program on this project means that there are standards the home has to meet to be certified as energy-efficient or green. I’m proud to say that this home, built in my hometown of Weston, meets those specifications.”

The program has specific energy efficiency standards above and beyond the Massachusetts building code which are enforced during the design and construction of the home by independent inspectors. At the completion of construction, the inspectors give the home a HERS rating which grades the increased energy efficiency of the home relative to non ENERGY STAR certified homes. The benefits to homeowners include savings on heating and cooling costs, a more comfortable and healthy home with reduced drafts and noise, and a home with less of an impact on the environment

Some of the performance features that distinguish an ENERGY STAR home from the average quality home are:

·         Enhanced Insulation – Higher insulation levels in walls, floors, and attics result in better energy performance and improved homeowner comfort. The insulation value of windows and doors is also an important determinant of comfort.

·         Air Sealing – Simply caulking, foaming, and gasketing the holes and gaps in the heated building envelope can reduce annual heat loss and utility bills by more than 15 percent.

·         Ventilation – All ENERGY STAR homes come equipped with mechanical ventilation, which ensures a continuous supply of fresh air to the home.

·         High-Efficiency Appliances – ENERGY STAR homes typically have high-efficiency household appliances, lighting, and heating and cooling systems, which use less energy to perform the same job.

In addition to being ENERGY STAR-certified, the home at 42 Coburn Road in Weston features four bedrooms, five full and two half baths, has more than 5,300 square feet of living space and is walking distance to Weston Center. Built with attention to detail and high end finishes, the home also includes a walkout lower level with exercise room, media room and game room with large fireplace.

“Building greener homes is extremely important but at the end of the day, we also want to build good homes that our customers love. With ENERGY STAR’s New Homes program providing a measurable standard for energy-efficiency, we’re able to do both,” said Meyer.

The home lists for $2,300,000. Kathleen Sheppard and Georgia Foote of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Weston are the listing brokers. They can be reached at (617) 417-5752 or Kathleen.Shepard@nemoves.com.

In addition to being a Weston resident and the principal of Meyer Homes, Craig Meyer is the current president of the Builders Association of Greater Boston (BAGB) and a Certified Green Professional. He’s received numerous industry awards, most recently: Greater Boston Builder of the Year (BAGB); Prism Award for Best Single Family Design over $1m and Community Service Award for Dream House (BAGB); and the Connecticut Home Builders Association Award for Best Traditional Subdivision, Best $500,000-$700,000 Home and Best Luxury Home.

Letting your plans for new kitchen cabinets slide.

November 2, 2009 //  by admin

CHEEKTOWAGA, NEW YORK…

When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, especially the cabinets, it’s easy to get hung up on looks. You have to remember, however, that you still want your new cabinets to be functional as well. To that end, DirectBuy of Buffalo, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, recommends sliding cabinet doors as a functional and attractive alternative.

“Sliding kitchen cabinet doors work in a similar fashion to sliding patio doors—on a grooved run–only on a smaller scale,” said Mark Klinger, owner of DirectBuy of Buffalo. So if you’re tired of the bumps and bruises from running into a cabinet door that someone left open – which is very common – installing beautiful kitchen cabinets with sliding doors is a great way to go.”

Kitchen cabinetry with sliding door fronts tends to work best in contemporary, modern, or Asian-inspired designs. Clear glass doors present an appealing alternative, giving you the opportunity to display your dinnerware or barware.

Sliding doors are also available in wood cabinets and often provide a clean and/or linear design that can dramatically enhance the appeal of your kitchen.

“Beyond all those benefits, sliding kitchen cabinet doors offer an added bonus in that they nest inside the cabinet when open but don’t take up any additional storage space, added Klinger.

DirectBuy carries everything you need for a kitchen remodel at prices direct from the manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. In addition, each DirectBuy club employs product specialists and designers who can help members create the kitchen that works best for their home.

Since 1971, DirectBuy has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. Home safety for the upcoming holiday season.

November 2, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

Sure, you may not have gotten around to carving your Halloween pumpkin, but the holiday season will be here before you know it. To that end, it’s never too early to start preparing your home to be safe during the holiday season. That’s why DirectBuy, the leading members-only home improvement and home furnishings club, is offering some home safety tips to help homeowners get a head start.

“According to the National Safety Council, 45 percent of all unintentional deaths occur around the home. Add holiday items to the mix—lights, trees, candles, guests, etc.—and you up the ante on things that could possibly go wrong,” said Mike Georgeff, of DirectBuy. “By taking a few extra precautions, you can make your home that much safer, not only for the holiday season but the rest of the year.”

Some easy, cost-effective measures to improve safety in your home include:

  • Regularly testing your smoke alarms and installing smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of your home — especially near sleeping areas.
  • Using insulated tape or plastic clips to hold outdoor lighting; be sure to keep electrical connectors off the ground and away from metal rain gutters.
  • If your gas fireplace’s glass panel is cracked or broken, you’ll want to repair or replace it before using.
  • Replace your furnace filter regularly during heating seasons.
  • Keep candles away from your Christmas tree. If you’re going with a natural tree, select a freshly cut one, which are more resistant to ignition.
  •  Carefully inspect holiday light strings each year and get rid of any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders, or loose connections. Be sure to unplug the light string when replacing light bulbs, too.
  • Use a timer for your outdoor lights, turning them on after 7 p.m. to avoid the electricity rush hour. For indoor lights, never leave them on when your house is unattended or you are asleep.
  • Never connect more than one extension cord together; instead opt for a single cord long enough to reach the outlet without stretching, but not so long that it can get easily tangled.

“The holidays are a special time of year that help foster memories that can last a lifetime,” said Georgeff. “By taking just a few precautions to be safe during the holiday, those memories can be for the special times you had and not a preventable tragedy.”

DirectBuy offers many products to help your home run more efficiently during the holiday season and the rest of the winter months—all at direct insider prices. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need some assistance in selecting products or just a second opinion, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

For more information on a DirectBuy membership, you can visit http://www.directbuycares.com.

Noted Environmental Attorney Greg D. Peterson joins Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C. of Boston, MA

October 30, 2009 //  by admin

DATELINE: BOSTON, MA…

Attorney Greg D. Peterson, prominent for his role in shepherding complex brownfields and redevelopment projects throughout New England, has become a partner at Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C. of Boston, MA.

Peterson, who was most recently a partner at the global firm of DLA Piper, was also formerly affiliated with Hill and Barlow. His legal practice focuses on five core areas: environmental impact review and permitting, the purchase and sale of contaminated properties including brownfields redevelopment, hazardous materials response advice, complex property use, development and structuring agreements, and the negotiation and closing of commercial real estate loan facilities and workouts.

Attorney Jeffrey P. Hart, a founding member of Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, welcomed Peterson to the firm stating, “The breadth and depth of Greg’s legal experience will enhance the scope of legal services offered through the Real Estate Department of Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, providing existing and future clients with the value added opportunity to secure seasoned legal counsel on projects involving complex real estate, environmental permitting and multifaceted land reclamation components. Our firm’s size (22 Lawyers) will also provide Greg’s existing clients with significant increased value for the same high quality legal services.”

Peterson has significant experience in both the private and not-for profit sectors and has received accolades from many quarters. He is a co-recipient of the 2005 Public Affairs Award from the Massachusetts chapter of NAIOP (the commercial real estate development forum) for the work that produced the Smart Growth Overlay Zoning and school funding Act (MGL Chapters 40R and 40 S) and its implementing regulations. Smart Growth principles encourage well-planned development that protects open space and farmland, revitalizes communities, keeps housing affordable, and provides more transportation choices. He was also recognized by NAIOP for his instrumental role in drafting and working toward passage of the Expedited Permitting Act in 2006, and the Act Restoring the Landlocked Tidelands Exemption from Licensing in 2007.

Repeatedly cited in Best Lawyers in America, Peterson has provided environmental legal advice on many high profile projects including Kendall Square, a 10-acre mixed used redevelopment on a heavily contaminated former manufactured gas plant site adjacent to MIT that won EPA’s 2006 Phoenix Award for best Brownfield redevelopment in the United States. He was also instrumental in advancing MEPA clearance for the construction of Langwood Commons, a mixed-use residential and office redevelopment in Stoneham, MA, that had become mired for a decade in the environmental review process. Peterson also expedited the permitting of Edgewood, the first major 40R smart-growth project brought to market in Massachusetts, encompassing a 400-unit residential apartment complex on a portion of a former state hospital property in North Reading, MA.

Peterson, who received his B.A. magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University and his J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School, is a member of Massachusetts Bar. He serves on the National Board of Directors of NAIOP and as Co-Chair of NAIOP’s Massachusetts Growth Committee. He is also a member of the Boston Bar Association and is a past President of the Real Estate Bar Association for Massachusetts.

Peterson, a native of Montana, is a resident of Carlisle, MA where he has actively served in a number of capacities over the years. He is currently a Trustee of the Town of Carlisle Affordable Housing Trust, a past Trustee of the Carlisle Conservation Foundation, and a former elected member and past Chairman of the Carlisle Planning Board. Peterson is also a recipient of the 1999 Conservationist of the Year award from the Town of Carlisle. Greg is active in open space and agricultural preservation.
