Renowned Easton Hair Stylist Shares Fashion Week Tips on Latest Hairstyles for Fall

July 22, 2010 //  by admin

Internationally Renowned Stylist Edward Blum

New shoes, new clothes and a must-have new hairstyle for fall. Local salon owner and internationally recognized style and color expert Edward Blum shares the best back-to-school styles straight from the runways of Fall Fashion Week.

Edward Blum, who owns the prestigious Makeovers Salon & Spa of Easton with his wife Norah Blum, served on the Wella team for celebrity designer Donna Karan as they introduced the DKNY Fall 2010 collection during Fashion Week. Below, he shares tips on how to obtain easy, sophisticated runway hairstyles for fall:

Classy Ponytail – This timeless hairstyle should be worn low and softly off to the side to create a simple yet spectacular look this fall. To achieve this look, pull hair from a loose pony and slide it to the side of your choice. Hair length does not particularly matter, although for shorter hair using clip on extensions to achieve the best look is a must. You can also purchase a weft of hair from your local extension retailer to add extra fullness and length to the pony. To get more of a sophisticated look, wrap a small section of your hair around the hair tie.

Waffle Waves – This look is about a thick loose natural wave that is very complementary and feminine. Starting with damp hair add a small amount of styling gel all over. Gather and section your hair into 6 small parts. The front of your hair should be parted in the direction you would typically wear it. Braid each section, keeping it 4 to 5 inches away from the part. The key is keeping the braids very large. Smaller braids will create more of a crimped look. When hair is fully dry, disband and run fingers through entire head.

Organic Stone Inspired Color – To achieve the best possible color, these techniques should be performed by a professional. For blonds and cooler blonds, a multi-dimension balayage method would be ideal this fall. This means that your stylist designs and places multi-colored highlights and low lights to produce a granite or slate stone color effect. Thanks to Eva Scrivo and Wella Hair Color.

Side Braid – This will work with any size or shape of the braid. For more of an impact a very large loose braid works best. Plates woven from one side of the head bandaging the front of the hair is a popular choice. Braids will be everywhere this fall.

Short Haircuts – Very military inspired androgynous short hair pairs beautifully with today’s high fashion styles such as the tuxedo inspired look for women and blazers with high shoulder pads. This cut starts with a barber taper neckline, very short sides and the top being one length. Unlike last season, the asymmetrical bold and edgy look is fading quickly. This season, short cropped sides, and long top rounds the look. Hair can be worn slicked back or soft and forward as you like.

According to Edward Blum, “Most of the styles you’ll see this fall are very natural and easy to obtain. The emphasis is on chic, without a lot of fuss.”

Old Colony Elder Services Raises Over $6K through “Cooking for A Cause” Fundraiser to Keep Meals on Wheels Program Rolling

July 21, 2010 //  by admin

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) raised over $6,000 for the Meals on Wheels and Congregate Meal site programs from their “Cooking for a Cause” family-friendly event held at the Middleboro Council on Aging. Several hundred people attended and enjoyed delicious food from participating restaurants and an outdoor concert with the summertime sounds of the the very popular BaHa Brothers band.

With a growing number of elders needing meal assistance and less money to support the Nutrition Program due to budget cuts, the non-profit agency acted quickly to launch their first annual “Cooking for a Cause” fundraiser for the Nutrition Program, which operates Meals on Wheels and congregate meal sites.

OCES wishes to thank all the restaurants that provided the delicious food for the event: Burrito Wraps of Brockton, RooBar in Plymouth, Veronica’s Treats of Middleboro, Mike’s House of Pizza in Hanson, Lindley Food Service of Connecticut (the caterer for Meals on Wheels), Stop & Shop, Hideaway Restaurant in Middleboro and the Middleboro Council on Aging. The agency also thanks all who donated the fantastic raffle prizes, which greatly contributed to the fundraising efforts.

“We are very fortunate to have the support of our sponsors, all these wonderful restaurants and the vendors that generously contributed prizes for our raffles,” noted Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of OCES.

The event was sponsored by: Home Instead of Bridgewater; Bayada Nurses of Plymouth; Senior Whole Health in Cambridge; Robbins Furniture of Rockland; George Washington Toma of Brockton; Liberty Printing Company of Brockton; Hackewell-Boone Insurance Agency of South Easton; Everett’s Auto Parts of Brockton; A&A Metro Transportation Bill’s Taxi Service, Inc. of Avon; Avida Design of Brockton; BC Tent Awning Co. of Avon; Bridgewater Savings Bank of Raynham; Fitzgerald Appraisals of North Easton; Evercare of Waltham; Diman Laundry of New Bedford; Geriatric Home Health Care Inc. of Avon; Good Samaritan Medical Center of Brockton; Anodyne Homemaker Services Corp of Quincy and the Metro-South Chamber of Commerce of Brockton.

“It is imperative that we have initiatives in place to raise additional funding so no senior goes hungry. It costs approximately $35 to provide one senior with a week’s worth of meals. The Cooking for a Cause event was a great success and we intend to make it one of our annual fundraisers,” explained DiGiorgi.

About OCES
Incorporated in 1974, Old Colony Elder Services is one of 27 private, non-profit Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. OCES offers a number of programs to serve seniors, individuals with disabilities, their families and caregivers such as Family Caregiver; Adult Family Care; Supportive Housing; Nutrition; Money Management; Protective Services; Home Care and more.

The organization’s mission is to provide services that support the dignity and independence of elders by helping them maximize their quality of life; live safely and in good health; and, prevent unnecessary or premature institutionalization.

In 2009, OCES was honored with the Metro-South Chamber of Commerce’s “Economic Impact Award”. The agency has 140 employees. For more information call (508) 584-1561 or visit the website at www.oldcolonyelderservices.org.

He added, “Our strategy is to help develop a good relationship and cooperation with schools and universities in the United States.”

Hankour expanded, “This initial visit was a great opportunity for both parties to develop a personal connection and determine how we can help each other.”

In addition to Moneer Hameed Tolephih, Iraqi guests included FTE President Mahmood Share Al Mulla Khalf; Vice President Asaad Toma Marogi; Dr. Mudhafar Sadeq Hasan Al-Zuhairi, the Dean of the Institute in Baghdad; and Mazin Tahamid Al-Kattan, the Dean of the Technical College in Mosul.

Answering the call… DirectBuy call center staff volunteers for Habitat for Humanity project

July 16, 2010 //  by admin

LENEXA, KANSAS…

On Saturday, June 12, 2010, the DirectBuy of Johnson County call center staff came together to make a difference in their community. The group volunteered to work with Habitat for Humanity to build a home in Gladstone, Missouri for a family whose father is deaf. The DirectBuy team worked for eight hours that day, installing cabinets, spackling, and finishing all the caulking in the new home.

“I enjoyed volunteering with my coworkers, mainly because it was fun seeing everyone in a different environment,” said Curtis Miles, a membership associate. “But the best thing about working with Habitat for Humanity was the feeling you get knowing you helped someone less fortunate.”

Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that provides homes and home loans for those unable to become homeowners without assistance. Habitat builds the homes from the ground up and provides the loan to the family interest-free.

“The whole team was honored to meet the family who will be the proud owners of the home they helped build,” said Pam Graessle, co-owner of Johnson County. “Their deep gratitude for what Habitat for Humanity had done for them was readily apparent from their beaming smiles.”

“I have volunteered with The American Cancer Society for 12 years, for a local children’s museum, and have participated in several Homeless Rallies for the Salvation Army, but my favorite thing about working with Habitat for Humanity is being able to meet the family we were helping,” said Samantha Derryberry, a membership associate. “Sometimes when you volunteer, you don’t get to know where or what your money and time go toward, but with Habitat we were able to put a face with who we helped.”

Since opening in 2002, DirectBuy of Johnson County has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, flooring and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from manufacturers or their authorized suppliers. Conveniently located at 11309 Strang Line Road in Lenexa, Kansas, DirectBuy Club offers consumers a comfortable setting where members finally have the financial control of buying direct.

About DirectBuy Club

Consumers interested in joining DirectBuy are encouraged to attend an exclusive Open House event, which is designed to educate families about DirectBuy’s business model and the benefits of buying direct. The Open House also helps consumers better understand how DirectBuy members avoid traditional retail markup when purchasing brand-name merchandise.

Since 1971, DirectBuy Club has been showing hundreds of thousands of consumers unparalleled ways to save as they shop for virtually everything for in and around their homes – from furnishings, home improvement and flooring, to entertainment and outdoor products, accessories, and much, much more. With more than 150 locations in North America, DirectBuy offers its members access to more than 700 brand-name manufacturers or their authorized suppliers in the United States, and more than 500 in Canada.
