There’s no place like ‘away from home’ for self-employed deductions

MILLBURY, MA and NEWPORT, RI…

It’s never been easier for small business owners and self-employed individuals to work remotely. Yet the benefits from working at home extend beyond a very, very short commute. There are also tax deductions that can make working from home beneficial even when you’re not there.

“Tax law allows you to deduct two types of travel expenses related to your business, local and what the IRS calls “away from home,” said Paul Dion, owner of Paul Dion, CPA in Millbury, MA and Newport, RI. “You can deduct local transportation expenses incurred for business purposes such as the cost of getting from one location to another via public transportation, rental car, or your own automobile. Meals and incidentals are not deductible as travel expenses, but you can deduct meals as an entertainment expense as long as certain conditions are met.”

Self-employed and small business owners can deduct one-half of the cost of meals (50 percent) and all of the expenses of lodging incurred while traveling away from home. The IRS also allows you to deduct 100 percent of your transportation expenses–as long as business is the primary reason for your trip.

“Many self-employed people don’t take advantage of many of these deductions. For example, deducting 50 percent of a meal they were going to eat anyway,” said Dion. “But these deductions are part of the tax law and taking advantage of these deductions is really just a matter of proper documentation.”

Adds Dion, “Expenses are directly related if you can show there was more than a general expectation of gaining some business benefit other than goodwill.”

To that end, he advises keeping a tax diary of your expenses to audit-proof your records. Adequate documentation includes amount, date, place of meeting, business purpose for the expense and business relationship.

For more information on deductible small business travel expenses, you can call Paul Dion CPA at (508) 853-3292 or visit www.pauldioncpa.com.

Don’t let the wrong summer footwear set you back

rhode island chiropractor

July 15, 2015 //  by admin

rhode island chiropractor
The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island says just say no to flip flops. These shoes may appear more comfortable but lack a shank or any real arch support or cushioning to protect your feet.

Rhode Island…

With the warm summer weather comes the option to wear cooler, more comfortable clothing and footwear. Unfortunately for some—particularly women–the change in footwear can have a detrimental impact on your posture, the way you walk and, ultimately, your back. To that end, the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island offers some quick tips selecting shoes that are both comfortable and provide support for your back.

First, find a shoe with a proper shank. A shank is a semi-rigid and semi-flexible material that allows for support and proper mobility and found in the arch support. Unfortunately, the typical summer sandal is thin and does not allow for a shank. Try to stay away from shoes without shanks.

Similarly, look for shoes that support the three arches in your foot: the medial and longitudinal arches and the transverse arch. Coupled with a proper shank, arch support adds to the stability of the entire human frame.

Also, pick a shoe that fits your foot comfortably and is the proper length and width. Very few people realize that their feet expand with aging as the arch collapses.

Finally, just say no to flip flops. These shoes may appear more comfortable but lack a shank or any real arch support or cushioning to protect your feet. In fact, many flip flop wearers end up with heel pain, leading to plantar fasciitis. Changing the way you walk because of heel pain can also lead to back issues.

“Improper footwear can lead to degenerative changes in the muscles, joints and connective tissues in the feet over time and that can cause a number of musculoskeletal issues,” said Dr. Michael Gottfried, president of The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island and a practicing chiropractor at Aquidneck Chiropractic in Middletown, Rhode Island. “If you see a chiropractor, you may want to consult with them before making any summer shoe selection. If you don’t and you start experiencing back pain this summer, you may want to consult a local chiropractic physician.”

The Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island, founded in 1918, is one of the oldest chiropractic associations in the country and represents over 60 of the practicing chiropractic physicians in the state of RI. Chiropractic is the largest non-drug health care profession in the US. The chiropractic profession has been affording relief for many types of health conditions naturally, without drugs and their potentially harmful side-effects, for over 100 years.

Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island is located at 1272 West Main Road, Building 2, Middletown, RI 02842. For more information, call (401) 207-0700 or visit www.RIchiro.org.

A “Crowning” Achievement! Plymouth-based Robert D. Morlan adds CAD/CAM Technology to create crowns in one day.

Plymouth dentist

July 14, 2015 //  by admin

Plymouth dentist
Plymouth Dentist Dr. Robert Morlan demonstrates the final product of his CAD/CAM E4D Scanner/Mill—a crown. This new technology can add or replace a crown within one office visit.

PLYMOUTH, MA…

Dr. Robert D. Morlan, Owner of “Morlan Family Dental” located on the Waterfront in Plymouth, recently announced the addition of a CAD/CAM E4D Scanner/Mill to his practice.  This cutting-edge technology enables Dr. Morlan, with offices overlooking the bay at 225 Water Street, to create crowns in just one visit.

“We say it can provide a crown in a day.  In reality, it’s a crown in one appointment, rather than the multiple appointments of the past,” said Dr. Morlan. “Gone are the days of the temporary crown.”

The process starts with scanning the patient’s mouth using an intraoral camera the size of an electric toothbrush. Using CAD/CAM technology, a crown is designed, with that information being sent to the milling unit. The milling unit is similar in size to a bread maker.  After milling, a color/shade is selected and the crown is placed in a kiln-like oven, which is heated to 2192 degrees Fahrenheit and then cooled.  The crown is then bonded in the patient’s mouth.  One appointment and done.

Dr. Morlan and his assistants have been thoroughly trained in the E4D and are continually training to become more efficient, utilize better techniques, and create more customized prosthetics (bridges, implants, veneers, onlays, inlays).  Classes in South Carolina and Chicago are in their future.

Said Dr. Morlan, “Eliminating the temporary crown is one of the big advantages of CAD/CAM technology.  Others are scheduling and the convenience of in-house creation.  If there is an issue, we can adjust it here during that appointment.  This service will really benefit those patients who can only do early and late appointments as it will require just the one visit.”

About Morlan Family Dental

Morlan Family Dental offers: comprehensive examinations; cosmetics (including Zoom! Whitening); crowns, bridges; composite restorations; partials and dentures; periodontics (with a periodontist on-staff); endodontics; oral surgery; implants; and emergency services (24-hour emergency phone number is available).

Morlan Family Dental is in-network with most insurance plans including BCBS Indemnity and Delta Dental Premier.  They also accept payment from ones that they are not.  Another advantage is that they accept all major credit cards and offer the availability of Care Credit. Making financing 100 percent of the treatment possible.

Morlan Family Dental is open: Monday Noon to 8pm; Tuesday 8am to 5pm; Wednesday Noon – 8pm; Thursdays and Fridays 7am – 3:30pm.

To schedule an initial consultation, call 508-747-0003.  For more information on Morlan Family Dental, visit their website at www.morlanfamilydental.com.

A high-five for the Run for Faith. 5th annual Run for Faith on Sun., August 23, 8:30am

July 10, 2015 //  by admin

The fifth annual Run for Faith commemorates the life of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi, who fought a courageous battle against ovarian cancer. The Run for Faith helps raise funds for local Plymouth non-profits and cancer research. Pictured here are several members of Faith’s family, including Matt Romboldi (far right), the race coordinator.

PLYMOUTH, MA…

In its five-year history, the Run for Faith has carved out several niches. One of those is as a family-oriented road race that offers a more rural course than other Plymouth road races at a distance that presents a challenge for both novice and experienced runners. This year’s Run for the Faith, the fifth annual run, takes place on Sunday, August 23 at 8:30am, starting from Plimoth Plantation.

“We have added some new wrinkles to this year’s run, the most notable being prize money for the top three finishers in both men’s and women’s divisions,” said Matt Romboldi, one of the founders of the race run in memory of his mother, Faith “Marcy” Romboldi, who lost her battle with cancer in 2010.

First place finishers for men’s and women’s will receive $150, $100 for second and $50 for third. There will also be trophies for age group winners.

Romboldi adds, “There are also some extras for all participants that we think everybody will like.”

Those extras include a chip timing for more accurate time tracking. This technology also triggers a camera along the course so runners can have a photo of themselves in action during the run.

Additionally, all runners who pre-register prior to race day will be guaranteed a Run for Faith tank top.

The 4.58-mile Run for Faith loop captures spectacular views of Cape Cod Bay, the Eel River and scenic horse farms. The course features rolling hills and unmatched history.  Water stations are plentiful. Walkers are welcome.

Post-race “light refreshments” will include bananas, oranges, bagels, muffins and scones.  To amuse younger family members, a jumpy house will be available. A number of vendors will be on hand to sell their wares before and after the race.

“I think my mother would be proud of not only the amount of money we raise for charities that were dear to her, but the kind of race this is,” said Romboldi. “The Run for Faith offers something for everybody and generates funds for some incredible causes.”

During its five year history, the Run for Faith has raised more than $20,000 for Dana Farber’s Yawkey Center for Cancer Care. The run has funded two annual scholarships for graduating high school seniors from Plymouth North High School and Plymouth South High School. The Plymouth Public Library and other local non-profits are also the beneficiary of funds raised by the Run for Faith.

One hundred percent of Run for Faith entry fees goes to these charitable efforts.

The entry fee for the Run for Faith is $25 for individuals. There are reduced entry fees available for members of Girls on the Go and South Shore Running Moms. Runners can register at www.runforfaithplymouth.org.

The Run for Faith is organized by Run for Faith, Inc., which is 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to commemorate the special life of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi who gave so much of herself to both individuals and the community.

Faith, or “Marcy” as she was known by her friends and family, was a teacher, member of the Red Hat’s Society, Sweet Adeline’s, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. Marcy’s ability to fight this vicious disease with incessant might and unsurpassed grace will never be forgotten and surely serves as inspiration to those who were close. Mostly, Marcy will be remembered for her acts of kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness. Many will remember her for her two best accessories- a lovely hat and a radiant smile!

Interested sponsors can contact Matthew Romboldi at 508-400-0751. For more information, please visit www.runforfaithplymouth.org, or email info@runforfaithplymouth.org. You can view the course online at: http://www.mapmyrun.com/us/plymouth-ma/run-for-faith-plymouth-ma-route-115100461.
