Singles Can Take the Pressure Off Valentine’s Day by Doting on a Beloved Pet

February 6, 2012 //  by admin

If you’re a pet owner who is single, dating and not in a serious relationship, you probably won’t be making or looking for a grand romantic gesture on Valentine’s Day. But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate and shower your affection on the one you love…your pet.

Paul A. Falzone, CEO of eLove Matchmaking, one of the largest professional introduction companies in the world whose dog Torin accompanies him to the office every day explained, “When you’re dating, but not in a committed relationship, Valentine’s Day can become a mine field of high expectations and disappointment. The best way to enjoy the day is to take the pressure off you and your date completely by placing the focus on your pet(s).“

Whether only one of you has a pet or you both do, get together with your date and dote on your pet(s). Celebrate how much you love and appreciate Fido and Kitty by making your pets a special meal, giving them favorite treats and spending extra time with them.

If you both have pets, have your pets exchange funny Valentine’s Day cards and/or little tokens of affection, like a chew toy or new collar.

Head for a local hiking trail where you can stroll with your date while Fido romps around. Take your pet(s) on a picnic at the park or the beach (if pets are allowed). Or, how about putting on some cool music and getting take-out meal for you and your date while Kitty enjoys the climbing post and a catnip toy.

Falzone noted, “There’s so much emphasis and hype on Valentine’s Day, single people really feel as though they are left out in the cold. It’s a day to celebrate and appreciate the ones you love which includes our faithful and beloved friends – our pets.”

Scott Freerksen, “The Lake Guy” of Lakefront Living Realty in Mansfield, MA.

MANSFIELD, MA…

When it’s good, there’s nothing better than lakeside living. Unfortunately, the dream of lakefront living can be dramatically altered by many of the issues lakefront property owners face—things that are even more important to know before investing in or selling a lakefront property. The “Keys to Buying Lakefront Property” seminar, hosted by Lakefront Living Realty, addresses many of these issues in a session to be held on March 25 at the Mansfield Holiday Inn at 31 Hampshire Street in Mansfield, MA.

“Purchasing a lakefront home is different than any other real estate,” said Scott Freerksen, AKA “The Lake Guy” and owner of Lakefront Living Realty, a realtor that represents both buyers and sellers of lakefront properties. “This seminar provides the vital knowledge needed to purchase and sell correctly.”

From 10am to 2pm, Freerksen and a team of experts on the buying and selling of lakefront property will cover:

  • The top 10 facts you need to know about lakes in New England
  • Finding the best deals first and negotiating the best contract
  • Matching your recreational needs to the perfect lake and location
  • How to build your dream home within waterfront regulations
  • Considerations for financing a second home or rental property
  • Evaluating lake conditions, water quality, weed content
  • Home orientation, dock options & green design
  • Understanding lakefront values and maintenance
  • Validating your price range and confirming your priorities
  • Watershed & lake management best practices
  • Choosing the perfect boat for recreation & entertaining

The panel of presenters will include Bob Barlow, a mortgage broker from MBA Mortgage of Braintree, MA; Real Estate Attorney Kathleen A. Keaveney of Waltham, MA; and Architect Aaron Socrat. Other experts include lake managers, an aquatic specialist, representatives from modular home companies and more.

The “Keys to Buying Lakefront Property” lasts for about about four hours (the first three hours are dedicated to buyers; the final hour is for sellers) and light refreshments will be served. The price of admission is $29 and you’re allowed to bring a guest at half price or $15.

Each attendee will receive more than $300 of take-home materials and be entered into a drawing to win a free kayak. Part of the proceeds from the seminar will be donated to Old Colony Habitat for Humanity.

“For many buyers, the dream of lakefront living can be shattered by not doing the homework prior to making their purchase,” said Freerksen. “This seminar can save buyers and sellers months of legwork by consolidating all this information into one session.”

Seating is limited to the first 50 people. To register, please visit http://www.lakefrontliving.com/seminarKeys.asp  or call 508-377-7167.

Valentine’s Day is around the corner. eLove Matchmaker explains true meaning of Romance

January 30, 2012 //  by admin

Paul A. Falzone, CEO of eLove Matchmaking

The first Valentine greeting was sent by a priest known as Valentine in third century Rome to his jailor’s daughter, whom he fell in love with while in prison. How could such an endearing message of love evolve into the parade of elaborate gifts and hype of today?

Paul A. Falzone, CEO of eLove Matchmaking, one of the largest professional introduction companies in the world, explains, “A candlelit dinner and a dozen roses is a sweet gesture, but everybody does it. Dining out has become commonplace. The true meaning of romance lies in originality. Your ‘message of love’ has to be personal and really mean something to the recipient.”

Falzone gives examples of a few romantic gestures that may give you some of your own creative ideas:

Say it with flowers – all year long. You know your sweetheart loves white hydrangeas no matter what the season. Arrange a monthly delivery of her favorite flower for a full year with your florist, with the first delivery beginning on Valentine’s Day. Not telling her that she’ll receive a beautiful arrangement every month is part of the romantic surprise.

Say “you’re special to me” by knowing what s/he likes the most. Maybe she loves live theater, but always seems to miss out on shows because she waits until the last minute to get tickets. Get her season tickets and then escort her.

Support his/her dreams. Perhaps he mentioned that mountain climbing was something he always dreamed about doing. You don’t need to climb the mountain with him, but you might give him a piece of equipment he’ll need to do it or a membership to a climbing club. Supporting his dreams is romantic.

Revisit a special place. On your third date, you went on a picnic on a hill overlooking the town and watched the sunset. That’s the day when you both knew you were serious about each other. You may not be able to recreate the entire scene, but it’s romantic to do it again in honor of that special day.

“Giving jewelry or other big ticket gifts on Valentine’s Day seems to be the norm, but romance is a little more than that. It’s easy to go a store and buy a gift. It’s more about knowing your sweetheart and making a very personal gesture. It’s going out of your way to let them know they are special to you,” said Falzone.

Governor Takes Bite Out of Elder Meals Program – Nearly 250,000 meals cut

January 27, 2012 //  by admin

Elder advocates reacted with surprise this week in response to Governor Deval Patrick’s proposed 24% cut in the state’s meals program for elders.

“This is literally taking food off the table for older people,” explained Al Norman, Executive Director of Mass Home Care. “This is one of the most visible and popular senior programs in the state. We never would have predicted a cut in such a key service.”

The Governor’s budget slashes the elder nutrition program line item (account 9110-1900) by $1.5 million – from the FY 2012 level of $6.325 million to $4.81 million in FY 2013. This would leave elder nutrition funding for 2013 lower than it was 7 years ago in 2006 under Governor Mitt Romney ( at $5.237 million).

According to Mass Home Care, the loss of funding will cut nearly a quarter of a million meals in 2013. Total meals served under this line item to seniors will plummet from 996,000 meals in 2012 to 754,000 meals in 2013 – a loss of 242,000 fewer meals.

“Old Colony Elder Services estimates its share of the impact would be $75,000 that will cause a reduction of more than 12,000 meals across its service area of 23 communities in the greater Brockton and Plymouth county areas” said Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of Old Colony Elder Services.

The elder nutrition program is one of several meals programs available for seniors in the state, funded by federal and state monies. A total of 8.8 million meals will be served in FY 2012 counting all senior meals programs. Norman said elder nutrition groups have begun assessing how to best get the lost meals funding restored on Beacon Hill; “I am certain the Governor’s people did not expect us to walk away from the table knowing a quarter of a million meals were being cut.”

According to Right at Home South Shore president, Love and Companionship Result in a Healthier and Longer Life

January 26, 2012 //  by admin

Libet Callahan, RN, BSN, president of the South Shore's Right at Home

With the arrival of Valentine’s Day on February 14, February has been designated as the month of love. But dark chocolate isn’t the only sweet gift that is good for the heart – building strong relationships and socializing with others play a vital role in living a longer and healthier life. The medical profession has been telling us for years that eating right and getting regular exercise will improve longevity. However, many physicians are now saying that maintaining positive relationships also can contribute to keeping people healthy. In numerous studies, researchers have found that people who have strong friendships and have the opportunity to socialize with others, age better, recover from illness more quickly, have stronger immunity and live longer, more personally fulfilling lives.

The connection between relationships and life expectancy is not a new theory. In a recent study at Brigham Young University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill involving more than 300,000 men and women across the developed world, researchers found that those who were considered to have poor social connections and limited opportunity for socialization had an average of 50 percent higher odds of death (an average of 7.5 years) than those with “robust” social ties and regular socialization. That is a significant difference not only in longevity, but also, in quality of life.

Among the aging, the lack of ongoing relationships and regular socialization is a common concern. For many aging adults their relatives, neighbors and friends move, go into long-term-care or die, leaving them isolated and alone. One health problem reported by Medical News Today links the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease in old age to social isolation. Loneliness was linked to lower levels of cognitive function as well as more rapid decline of general physical function. People who identified themselves as “lonely” experienced double the risk of developing Alzheimer’s than those who described themselves as “least lonely”. It is estimated that 28 percent of Americans older than age 65 live alone, which exacerbates this problem. It is important for seniors and their caregivers to be aware of the potential for social isolation and how to create opportunities to develop personal bonds with others.

Here are some considerations to minimize senior isolation and loneliness:
Encourage your aging loved one to participate in local activities at their church, synagogue or senior center. Many senior centers offer transportation to and from the facility at low or no cost.
Coordinate with siblings and relatives to ensure that your loved one receives a visit or at least one phone call daily.
Adult day care centers can be a great resource for socialization and cognitive stimulation.
Senior Homecare agencies like Right at Home can provide vetted companions that offer socialization as well as help with food preparation, light housekeeping and transportation to doctor appointments, shopping or just to go visit a friend.
Keep in mind that love from friends and family could be the key to ensuring a longer, happier life, not just on February 14, but all year long. Remember your aging loved ones this Valentine’s Day by giving a cherished gift – your time.

Mass Bay Spine & Sport Physical Therapist Offers 5 Tips for Avoiding Winter Injuries

January 24, 2012 //  by admin

Brendan Carman, MPT, ATC Physical Therapist, Athletic Trainer Certified, Director of Rehabilitation

The poet Robert Frost said, “You can’t get too much winter in the winter”. According to Brendan Carman, MPT, ATC, Director of Rehabilitation at Mass Bay Spine & Sport Physical Therapy (MBSSPT), if you suffer a strain or injury brought on by too much shoveling, winter activities or from slipping on an icy patch in your driveway – then it is too much winter.

MBSSPT is a state-of-the-art orthopedic outpatient physical therapy practice based in Marshfield.

Carman offers five tips for avoiding winter injuries:

Wear the proper gear. Snow, slush and ice are slip hazards that should be taken seriously. MBSSPT has worked with a number of patients who have injured their wrists, ankles, shoulders, knees and backs from falls in bad weather. One of the best ways to prevent falls is by wearing the proper winter gear, such as sturdy boots with rubber soles. If you participate in winter sports, be sure to wear the appropriate attire and protective gear, especially if you have suffered an injury previously.

Learn the correct technique first. If you’re a “newbie” at any winter sport, from skiing and snowboarding to ice skating, or if you’re switching from one sport to another, understand that posture, balance and weight distribution are different for each sport. Proper technique is imperative to avoid strain or injury that could set you back for weeks or months at a time. Learn before you leap into a new sport. Take lessons through a certified instructor to help ensure you avoid injury.

Choose the right tools. Snow is inevitable in New England and so is shoveling. In a perfect world, we would all be able to employ a snow removal service for even the smallest amount of snow. Selecting the right “tool” for shoveling is key. Choose a shovel that is sturdy and lightweight. Or, opt for a “pusher” shovel with a blade that looks like a snow plow. This type of shovel is very easy on the back because you literally push the snow to the side, as opposed to picking it up. Got ice? Ice melt is one of the best “tools” around for eliminating hazardous ice. Not a fan of ice melt? Sand or kitty litter can provide traction on slippery areas.

Keep your balance. As with winter sports, balance is key when shoveling. To avoid injury while shoveling, bend from the hips and knees to shovel. Tightening your abdominal muscles while you lift the shovel will help support your back. Take care not to twist your back to throw the snow.

Don’t overdo it. Fatigue is the enemy. If you’ve been playing sports or shoveling for an hour or more without a break, you risk overexertion, which leads to pulled muscles. Working tired muscles can lead to serious strain or injury. Don’t skip breaks. If you’re shoveling, you should take a break at least every 15-20 minutes.

According to Carman, “Low back pain, sciatica, herniated discs, muscle strains and shoulder pain are the most common winter related conditions we treat. Following our five key tips will help you avoid strain and injury.”

WALTHAM, MA and WESTON, MA…

Early morning sales conferences are renowned for their coffee breaks. Besides being a time to network, it also provides opportunity for attendees to recaffeinate with their hot beverage of choice. With the recent addition of sales guru Jeffrey Gitomer, bestselling author of the The Sales Bible and a weekly newsletter Sales Caffeine, a second cup of joe might not be necessary for the Boston Business Boot Camp, a three-day conference designed specifically to help green professionals grow their  businesses.

“It’s not every day you can add the author of the Bible to your speaker’s list,” joked Keith Upham, founder of the Boston Business Boot Camp. “Seriously though, Jeffrey is one of the most dynamic sales speakers in the world. He not only takes over a room, but provides more of a jolt to an audience than 10 cups of coffee.”

Adds Upham, “We designed this Boot Camp for green industry professionals but the information Jeffrey will be sharing is stuff every small business owner should know.”

Gitomer’s best-selling titles include: The Sales Bible, The Little Red Book of Selling, The Little Black Book of Connections and The Little Gold Book of YES! Attitude. All of his books have been number one best sellers on Amazon.com, including Customer Satisfaction is Worthless, Customer Loyalty is Priceless, The Patterson Principles of Selling, The Little Red Book of Sales Answers, The Little Green Book of Getting Your Way, The Little Platinum Book of Cha-Ching!, The Little Teal Book of Trust, Social BOOM!, and The Little Book of Leadership. His literary efforts also include a weekly syndicated column entitled Sales Moves, with a readership of more than four million.

Gitomer is also a renowned speaker, giving more than 100 presentations per year for corporations like Coca-Cola, D.R. Horton, Caterpillar, BMW, AT&T Wireless, MacGregor Golf, Ferguson Enterprises, Kimpton Hotels, Hilton, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, AmeriPride, NCR, Stewart Title and Comcast Cable. Those presentations include speaking at public and corporate seminars, running annual sales meetings, and conducting live and Internet training programs on selling, customer loyalty, and personal development.

“In creating Boston Business Boot Camp, we wanted to give green industry professionals nationwide a world class event,” said Upham, who is also the owner of Weston, MA-based landscaping/design company The Upham Landscape Company. “With Boston as our location, we were part of the way there. Adding a world class speaker like Jeffrey Gitomer to an already impressive agenda of activities and speakers brings us all the way there.”

Other speakers appearing at the March 1-3 conference to be held at the Westin Hotel in Waltham, Massachusetts, include: Carissa St. Laurent of Constant Contact, Michael Gannon, Esq.; Jeffrey Scott of Jeffrey Scott, Inc.; Bonnie Kirchner of Sea Change Financial Education; Tony Bass of Tony Bass Consulting, Inc.; Frank Crandall of Crandall Consulting and Keith Upham. The range of topics covered will include sales, marketing, financial planning, HR, time management, and more.

The Boston Business Boot Camp anticipates up to 200 attendees from a variety of green industry disciplines, including landscapers, lawn care pros, tree service specialists, pest control business owners, masons, fence companies, nursery/greenhouses, outdoor lighting, and pool installers. The cost to attend is $995 per person. Companies signing up three or more attendees will receive a five percent discount. Companies signing up five or more may deduct 10 percent from the total.

In addition, a variety of sponsorship opportunities are available. Those include the Platinum Sponsorship ($15,000), Silver and Silver Lanyard ($3000) and Bronze ($750).
