RI and MA participants in HIN1 (Swine) Flu vaccine studies to receive vaccinations early.

July 28, 2009 //  by admin

DATELINE: WARWICK, RI…
The race is on to find the most effective H1N1 (Swine) flu vaccine in time for inoculations this fall. As part of this effort, Omega Medical Research in Warwick, Rhode Island has announced that it will be conducting several investigational HIN1 Flu vaccine studies starting in August to assist in the development of a safe and effective vaccine.

On June 11, 2009 the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the worldwide pandemic alert level to Phase 6 in response to the ongoing spread of the novel influenza A (H1N1) virus commonly known as Swine Flu. WHO stated, “The 2009 influenza pandemic has spread internationally with unprecedented speed. In past pandemics, influenza viruses have needed more than six months to spread as widely as the new H1N1 virus has spread in less than six weeks.”

David L. Fried, MD, the medical director for Omega Medical Research, and the Principal Investigator on investigational HIN1 Flu vaccine studies to be conducted at the center, stressed the urgency of this undertaking, “At this time, the best preventative measure to avoid H1N1 is to receive vaccination and immunization.  Omega Medical Research is conducting one of the few studies in the country that provides the initial vaccine to volunteers who participate in this important study.”

Recent comments from Dr. Anne Schuchat, director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) indicate that the virus is not going away and that the 2009 H1N1 virus patterns are quite different from seasonal influenza, “This virus is continuing to cause illness here in the U.S. even in the summer and continues to affect a generally younger population than what we see in terms of the seasonal influenza.”

Schuchat continued, “We do expect there to be an increase in influenza that occurs this fall, perhaps earlier than what we see with seasonal influenza. In particular, we think there may be challenges when people return to schools and our communities get back into the sort of the regular times with lots of kids congregated together.”

This spring several Rhode Island schools closed temporarily due to H1N1 (Swine) flu concerns including the Greystone Elementary School in North Providence, North Kingstown High School, and the Pier Middle School in Narragansett. In Southeastern Massachusetts the Assawompsett Elementary School in Lakeville and the Mary Fonseca Elementary School in Fall River both closed temporarily this spring due to H1N1 (Swine) flu outbreaks. To date, 2 H1N1 (Swine) flu deaths have been confirmed in Rhode Island and 6 deaths in Massachusetts.

Residents of Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts who would like to participate in Omega Medical Research’s investigational HIN1 Flu vaccine studies should contact Patty Feole, RN at 401-739-3573 as soon as possible. Volunteers are needed in four age groups: 6 to 35 months; 2 years to 17 years; 18 years to 64 years; and 65 years and older. Study participants will receive compensation for their time and travel to Omega Medical Research, which is conveniently located near Routes 295 and 95 in Warwick, Rhode Island.

On a map quest…Resort Maps to produce “Best of Dennis-Harwich” map, advertising opportunities available.

July 21, 2009 //  by admin

CAPE COD, MASSACHUSETTS AND WAITSFIELD, VERMONT…

Resort Maps, creator of more than 90 customized travel maps across the United States, England and Puerto Rico, recently began work on the first edition of a map of Dennis-Harwich, Massachusetts.  The Best of Dennis-Harwich Resort Map will also feature the towns of Brewster, Harwich Port and Dennis Port. Resort Maps are colorful, hand-drawn maps of resort towns and cities, free to area visitors.

The creation of this new map will show what the area has to offer by highlighting local attractions, restaurants, accommodations, retail shops, real estate and other services in the greater Dennis-Harwich area. Each advertiser on the map is represented with a display ad surrounding the perimeter of the map, including a color-coded grid locator and their actual building drawn, highlighted and labeled, making it easy to locate.

These same colorful maps can be found on-line at www.resortmaps.com. Here you will find interactive maps of all 90+ resort areas to choose from. These interactive maps allow the viewer to read a description of each business as they scroll over each building and to connect to the website of the business for further information.

“The Cape has always been a popular destination for tourists and it’s become an even greater draw as people stay closer to home during their vacations,” said Gerry Pelissier, Resort Maps franchise owner. “The new Dennis-Harwich map offers a real treasure trove of things to do for people vacationing in the area or just down for a day or two. Our free ‘souvenir style’ maps can be found not only at the local advertisers’ shops but also at many non-advertiser locations throughout the Cape area.”

For information on how to advertise on the upcoming Dennis – Harwich map, you can call franchise owner Gerry Pelissier at 508-681-9804 or email at gerryp@resortmaps.com.

Resort Maps began creating and publishing maps in the northeastern U.S. back in 1986. In an effort to continue the company’s growth and simultaneously maintain the quality of the product, Resort Maps became a franchisor in 1993. Since adopting the franchise model, Resort Maps has grown steadily to more than 90 maps distributed across 20 states as well as towns and cities in England and Puerto Rico.

“We publish over 20 million maps per year in more than 90 cities and towns for a good reason. Our maps are fun, easy-to-read and they really do make you want to stop and see some of the local attractions before heading to the next part of your trip. Our advertisers like them for that very same reason,” said Peter Hans, president of Resort Maps.

Staycations…A trend here to stay.

July 17, 2009 //  by admin

WAITSFIELD, VERMONT…

Extended stay vacations are one casualty of the current recession. But many families have found a more cost-effective way to spend their vacations while having just as much fun. How, you might ask. By going on a “staycation”.

Loosely defined, a staycation refers to a vacation spent at home where, instead of going away, you do short day trips—typically within three hours from your residence. The concept itself has enlightened many to the tourist “treasures” quite literally in their backyards.

“We get so hung up on traveling to far away places that we really do overlook gems that are pretty close to home—like those places you might see in a brochure or flyer at a rest area while you’re traveling. A staycation makes it possible for you to schedule mini-vacations to those kind of places and keep your costs down,” said Peter Hans, president of Resort Maps, creator of customized travel maps in more than 90 cities and towns across the U.S. and U.K.

So, what can you do on your staycation? That’s the beauty of it, you can do anything. Some easy, low- cost ideas include:

·         Visit a local water park – In most parts of the country, you can find a water park within a three-hour drive of your home. Pack a picnic basket or, better yet, take some coals and barbecue. Many of these parks have barbies you can use.

·         Hike and picnic at a state or national park – Be a little daring and venture off to one you haven’t visited before.

·         Outdoor music or film festivals – Free outdoor concerts are in abundance during the summer. For many, you can just spread out a blanket or prop up a lawn chair. Also, more and more areas hold film festivals.

·         Foreign Cuisine Night – Maybe a trip to another county is not in the budget. A night out to sample some foreign cuisine can be the next best thing. For example, have a “Mexican night” at a nearby Mexican restaurant, “Indian night” at your local Indian establishment, etc. If you’ve never tried that kind of food, even better.

·         Museum Day – You’ve probably got several within a 45-minute drive from your home, yet how many times have you been to one of them? Take one day and hit as many museums as you can.

·         Family Game Night – Lest you think it’s mandatory to go somewhere for your staycation. Hosting a family game night can be fun and relaxing—whether it’s a Wii golf tournament or board game marathon.

·         Camp out in your backyard – Young kids especially will love the adventure of pitching a tent in the backyard.  Plus, you’ve got the conveniences of your home without the expense of a campsite.

Added Hans, “Staycations provide a viable alternative to a vacation, allowing similar adventures you might experience on a vacation without the big expense. Who knows, you may even like them better. Especially when you can put your head down on your own pillow at the end of the day.”

Resort Maps offer a number of ideas on possible local excursions for your staycation. Colorful, hand-drawn maps of resort cities and towns across 20 states, as well as parts of the UK, Resort Maps advertise restaurants, accommodations, retail stores, factory outlets, recreation and attractions, real estate and other local services. With landmarks prominently displayed on the maps, Resort Maps are an easy and fun way to find your way around town whether you are visiting, new to the area or you just want to know what’s happening around your town.

Got game? …Game rooms the latest indoor room to move to the great outdoors

July 15, 2009 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, HOFFMAN ESTATES, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

People in the Midwest love the outdoors, perhaps because we’re forced inside all too often by the weather. So it’s no surprise we look for ways to spend even more time outside when the weather turns nicer. Case in point, another hot trend, outdoor game rooms.

According to the DirectBuy locations of greater Chicago, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, covered patio areas have become a haven for pool, ping-pong and foosball tables in recent years. In fact, many manufacturers have started producing these tables with weather-resistant materials to accommodate this demand.

“Many people don’t have the space for a game room in their home, so converting a portion of your patio into one makes perfect sense, especially if you have tables that are made of weather-resistant materials,” said Dave Kushner, owner of DirectBuy of Hoffman Estates. “When you consider how many people have transformed their grill areas into ‘outdoor kitchens,’ adding a game room to the mix creates the ultimate outdoor ‘man cave.’”

In addition to billiards, ping-pong and foosball, you can also furnish your patio game room with game tables, so you can enjoy board games as well.

Besides being a fun place for grown ups, an outdoor game room provides a place for the kids to entertain while Mom and Dad can enjoy some semblance of peace and quiet inside. This can dramatically reduce the in-and-out traffic volume that can make an impression on your floors and carpets.

DirectBuy has everything you need to furnish your patio to suit your lifestyle – all at manufacturer-direct prices that can save up to 50% off. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists who can provide helpful pointers on selecting the right equipment and setup for your home.

Since 1971, DirectBuy clubs have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. With several convenient locations in the greater Chicago area (Chicago, Gurnee, Hoffman Estates, Naperville, and Tinley Park), consumers can enjoy a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

For more information on a DirectBuy membership, you can visit http://www.directbuychicago.com/.

About DirectBuy

Since 1971, DirectBuy has helped hundreds of thousands of families enjoy a better quality of life, enabling them to buy directly from more than 700 manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. Buying direct makes members’ hard-earned money to go much further, while having the selection and choice not available at any retail store. Access to confidential prices, local suppliers, and unparalleled selection helps make members’ dream projects a reality.  It’s a comfortable, country-club setting, where you finally have the financial control of buying direct. The DirectBuy clubs serving the greater Chicago area are part of more than 160 locations throughout North America.

Consumers interested in becoming members may obtain a Visitor’s Pass to attend an Open House by visiting http://www.directbuychicago.com/.

USMMA of Bellingham Announces Quarterly Community Blood Drives

July 15, 2009 //  by admin

United States Mixed Martial Arts (USMMA) of Bellingham (http://www.usmma.org) recently teamed up with the American Red Cross to hold a community Blood Drive at their studio earlier this month. It was well-received by the community and 25 blood donors came in, eight whom were new blood donors to the American Red Cross.

In light of the blood drive’s success, USMMA has announced that they will host quarterly blood drives, run by the American Red Cross, at their studio at 316 Hartford Ave. The next blood drive will be held on September 3, 2009.

As a “thank you” to donors from the recent blood drive, USMMA offered one free week of Martial Arts or one free yoga class. Donors also received a free box of chocolate dipped strawberries from Edible Arrangements and were entered into a drawing for a chance to win two Boston Red Sox Tickets and to be honored on the field as “Blood Donor of the Game”.

“According to the American Red Cross, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood, yet only five percent of the eligible population gives blood. Our community blood drive was a great success. And, since there is a significant and ongoing need for blood, we’ve decided to organize a quarterly blood drive with the Red Cross here at our studio,” explained Tom Hafers, owner of USMMA.

He continued, “We had a lot of positive feedback from those who donated. Whole blood donors are eligible to give blood every eight weeks and a number of donors expressed their interest in doing so.”

For more information or to sign up to donate at the next Blood Drive, which will be held September 3rd, contact USMMA at 508-966-5006.

About USMMA

USMMA focuses on elevating the physical and spiritual well being of students through Mixed Martial Arts and Yoga. Classes offered include Strength & Conditioning; Brazilian Jiu Jitsu; Thai Boxing; Cardio Thai Boxing; Wrestling; Cardio and Open Mat; Kids Mixed Martial Arts; Pilates; Power Yoga and Deep Flow Yoga.

TMI Executive Resources Helps Job Seekers Understand Today’s Job Market

July 15, 2009 //  by admin

More than twenty million Americans will attempt to find a new job or change their job, industry or career over the next year. Many more will attempt to start or buy a business. They will do so in the most competitive job market of this century.   The layoffs in many major industries coupled with increasingly large numbers of post graduate and college-educated professionals entering the work force have significantly heightened the level of effort required to effect a career transition.

TMI Executive Resources (http://www.TMIer.com), a firm providing outplacement and career consulting services to thousands of clients around the globe, strives to help job seekers better understand today’s job market by offering insight on two traditional (and unsuccessful) job seeking approaches.

Answering Advertisements
For most job seekers, classified advertisements seem to represent the largest single source of job opportunities available. The reality is quite different.  The U.S. Department of Labor estimates that only very small percentage (about 10 percent) of executive and professional positions are filled through advertisements in newspapers and other publications or on the Internet. Why? Newspaper advertising is extremely expensive. An average size ad in most local newspapers costs hundreds of dollars. A similar ad in the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal would cost thousands!  Most employers would prefer to avoid these expenses. Given the turnover rate in most companies, the cost of advertising for every available opening would be prohibitive.

Why is responding to ads unproductive for most job seekers? Essentially, it is a numbers game. In many cases, “classifieds” will generate hundreds of responses, yet all but one candidate will be rejected. If there is one candidate who has a more “directly transferable experience base” than you, he/she will win.

Agencies and Search Firms
A major misconception exists in the minds of most job hunters regarding the role of employment agencies and executive search firms. In his book, Executive Search: Gateway to the Best Talent for Your Business, Charles Polachi sums it up this way: “We don’t find jobs for people, we find people for companies. People think I’m in the business of making their next job change; I’m not.” One of the largest executive search firms in the country states that in the late 1980’s and 1990’s the recruiting industry filled about 7 percent of all executive, managerial, and sales positions, which is a sharp drop from the nearly 13 percent in the 1970’s. Many companies have neither the personnel nor the time to acknowledge many of the unsolicited contacts. A job hunter should not ignore employment agencies or search firms, but should put the agency’s role in the proper perspective – which is helping companies find people.

According to TMI, most people do best in the employment markets by finding what are referred to as private openings, positions that are about to become available or positions that could be created.  These types of opportunities may be found by using a strategy that combines networking, consulting, industry/professional associations, search firms and the Internet.

The rewards are great for the job hunter who can find these private openings because you practically eliminate the competition and get to interact most with decision makers.  Very often you are instrumental in writing your new job description and you have much more leverage when negotiating a compensation package.

Tom McNeil, the company’s president explained, “Most people will take a traditional and ultimately frustrating approach to changing jobs or seeking entrepreneurial ventures. After preparing a resume, they will usually answer several advertisements, contact a few agencies and
recruiters, and ask their friends to ‘keep their eyes and ears open.’ Others will write directly to companies or ‘knock on doors’ and then wonder why nothing happened. Most people seriously over estimate their knowledge of job changing, and few subjects are more vital to a person’s livelihood and overall quality of life.”

About TMI
TMI Executive Resources is a worldwide organization that provides professional career consulting and career management services as well as entrepreneurship consulting to executives.  Founded in 1986, TMI has provided services to over 4,000 clients around the world and has grown to six locations on the East Coast.  TMI headquarters is located at 20 William Street, Suite 100 in Wellesley, MA.  The company has offices in Boston and Springfield, MA; Hartford, New Haven and Stamford, CT and Washington DC.  For more information, contact 877-864-3932 or visit their website at TMIer.com.

Skin Care Expert Educates Other Practitioners in the Latest Cosmetic Laser Treatments

July 15, 2009 //  by admin

Dr. Richard Eisen, M.D., a board certified dermatologist and founder of South Shore Skin Center, with locations in Cohasset and Plymouth, recently educated physicians and advanced heath practitioners (estheticians, nurses, physician assistants) from across Massachusetts in the latest cosmetic laser technology treatments.

Last week, Dr. Eisen, a recognized leading expert in the field of laser therapy, educated skin care practitioners at a Candela Laser Corporation course held at Massachusetts Medical Society’s headquarters in Waltham. Dr. Eisen lectured and provided live demonstrations of advanced laser therapies including the Alex TriVantage laser; Gentle Max; VBeam Perfecta and Quadralase, a Fractional CO2 laser.

Laser technologies can smooth wrinkles and lines; improve the appearance of surgical scars, acne and acne scarring; remove hair; resurface soft tissues; improve pigmentation and eliminate redness and broken blood vessels.

“Laser technologies are extremely effective and minimally invasive. Laser treatments can often be performed in less than 30 minutes with outstanding results that may last for years depending on the type of treatment,” noted Dr. Eisen. He continued, “Laser therapies are certainly becoming more popular. Recently, I was approached by a tattoo parlor owner who wanted to potentially expand his business by utilizing laser treatments to get rid of unwanted tattoos for his clients.”

Dr. Eisen’s next speaking engagement for physicians will be held on July 22, 2009 in Providence, RI and will cover the advanced techniques and proper use of Juvederm and injectable fillers and Botox.

July 14, 2009 //  by admin

MALDEN, MASSACHUSETTS…

With the economy in its current state, you might think eating out would be off the table for many small business owners. Conversely, you might think a restaurant’s plans to upgrade systems, replace carpeting or embark on a billboard advertising campaign might have to be put on hold just to keep up with necessary services like pest control. To meet the needs of both the small business owner and restaurants, New England Trade, a bartering organization serving Massachusetts businesses for the past three decades, has set up a special restaurant division.

“We have a large number of restaurants as members. These members put up gift certificates to their establishments in exchange for the services they need to run their organizations, things like upkeep of their facility, pest control, new menus, advertising, etc. We also have members who like to use their barter dollars on restaurant gift certificates to use for themselves or incentive programs for their staff or customers. The new restaurant division helps pair the members from both sides of the equation,” said Ken Meharg, CEO of New England Trade.

The practice of bartering has been around since the days of the caveman (e.g. a plumber does some work for a CPA, who in turn does the plumber’s taxes). In a bartering organization, members have access to the products and services of all the members. So, the plumber can do work for the CPA on barter, but can then choose to “spend” the bartering dollars he’s accrued on another product or service offered by other members. Like use of an ocean-side condo for a week.

There is some exchange of cash involved with barter. A 7.5 percent transaction fee goes to the bartering organization and members are responsible for paying taxes on the “barter dollars they earn. Still, for the most part, a bartering organization makes a meal out possible for many small business owners without dramatically impacting their cash flow.

For the restaurant owner, barter provides a tremendous means to attracting new business for a relatively small investment. An example of this is the New England Trade member and restaurant owner who offered $20,000 in gift cards. While those cards represent $20,000 to fellow members, the actual cost to the restaurant owner is much less. After all, the restaurant owner is probably ordering the same amount of food and beverage and keeping the same amount of staff on regardless of the gift certificates.

The bottom line in this example is that the restaurant owner was able to purchase $20,000 in billboard advertising space while attracting $20,000 worth of potential new business without spending much more than usual.

“In today’s economy, the biggest problem restaurants are facing is empty seats. By trading gift certificates for barter dollars, restaurant owners can bring in new customers, who, if they enjoy their experience, could become repeat, cash-paying customers. Short of word-of-mouth referrals, there’s really no more cost-effective way to attract new business,” said Meharg.
