South Shore Skin Center & Spa Dermatologists Weigh in on New Melanoma Drug

April 7, 2011 //  by admin

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared the first drug to prolong survival of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. The physicians at South Shore Skin Center and Spa, one of the most progressive practices for medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology in Massachusetts, weigh in on what it means to patients with melanoma.

“The breakthrough cancer medication from Bristol-Myers Squibb is Yervoy and it is specifically for patients with late-stage or metastatic melanoma. This is an exciting new weapon in the fight against skin cancer. We have two drugs out there that are used in the treatment of stage 3 and stage 4 melanoma – Interferon (which was approved a decade ago) and Dacarbazine. Yervoy is the first medication shown to prolong survival,” explained Dr. Ramzi Saad, M.D., dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center and Spa.

He continued, “ Yervoy is going to be a promising option for many. It prolongs life by six and a half months or more. The big issue is the significant side effect profile. But, Yervoy will undergo further rigorous testing to define it’s optimal use on melanoma patients.”

Over the past two years, South Shore Skin Center and Spa has seen a significant increase in the number of South Shore and Cape Cod patients at their practice being diagnosed with stage 1 and stage 2 melanoma. The doctors at South Shore Skin Center and Spa believe that one of the potential directions that may be taken with Yervoy is that it could be given to patients in the earlier stages (stage 1 or stage 2 melanoma) for protective results as well as for greater results in prolonging survival.

According to South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s dermatologists, early detection is imperative in the prevention and treatment of melanoma. If undetected and untreated, melanoma can quickly spread to the major organs and lymph nodes.

“Skin cancer is primarily caused by prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from the sun or from tanning booths. UVA and UVB rays are present in tanning booths as well as on cloudy days and exposed skin is left vulnerable without sunblock or sunscreen. We’re all exposed to these rays every day, each time we go outdoors and the repeated exposure builds over time,” noted Dr. Richard Eisen, M.D. Dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center and Spa.

Protecting Against Skin Cancer

South Shore Skin Center’s physicians remind adults and children to follow these important measures in the prevention of skin cancer:

Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.

Avoid sunlamps and tanning beds.

Use ample amounts of sunscreen or sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even if it is cloudy.

Wear protective clothing and large framed or wrap-around sunglasses to protect the eye area.

Have your skin checked by a dermatologist regularly.

Note any moles or other spots on the skin that have changed. Have them checked by physician as soon as possible.

For concerns about the skin, contact South Shore Skin Center’s Cohasset (781) 383-3340 or Plymouth dermatology office (508) 747-0711.

Can you get your man to man up? How to know when you are dating Peter Pan.

April 1, 2011 //  by admin

NORWELL, MASSACHUSETTS…

We laugh at shows like Big Bang Theory where lovable geeks spend weekend nights content to play video games online rather than engage socially with the opposite sex.  Or movies like Knocked Up, where twenty-something males get high and talk about creating the next great skin website while their female contemporaries (Katherine Heigl’s character) work at their careers. While these characters may seem exaggerated, there’s a growing epidemic with males in their twenties and thirties who simply do not want to grow up and engage in adult activities like dating and relationships.

“There does seem to be a real disconnect between many males in that age bracket who are content to hang out with buddies or get involved with the opposite sex but only to take care of their primal needs,” said Paul A. Falzone, CEO of eLove, one of the world’s largest online dating and matchmaking services. “Unfortunately, many women do get involved with these modern day Peter Pans and invest a lot of time and energy in a relationship that’s really not going anywhere.”

So how do you know if you’re dating a Peter Pan? Males stuck in the Peter Pan syndrome show a number of traits:

  • Mama’s boy – Peter Pans typically look for partners to do everything for them—cook, clean, etc.
  • Job insecurity – Peter Pans typically don’t hold steady jobs for very long and are all-too-ready to jump the steady paycheck for the next great moneymaking idea.
  • Fidelity – Not a high priority item for a number of Peter Pans. Why? Peter Pans believe the grass is always greener, even if you’ve been dating somebody for a while.
  • No Prince Charming – while Prince Charming came to Cinderella’s rescue, that’s not the case with Peter Pan. Quite the opposite. A Peter Pan never takes responsibility for his own mistakes and often turns to the mother figure to pick up the pieces.
  • My way or the highway – Peter Pans must have things their way. While a 20-something might not throw a fit or sit in a corner holding his breath, the tantrum could manifest itself in other ways, mental and physical.
  • Father figure? – Marrying a Peter Pan and having children with him can be a recipe for disaster. Since Peter Pans is himself like a child, the children will not respect him, in spite of his efforts to be their playmate.
  • Truth vs. fiction – Dating a child-like man creates a quandary as to where truth ends and fiction begins.

So, what do modern-day Wendys do if they start to see the Peter Pan in their man?

“Unfortunately, many women think they can help their child-like men grow up. Truth be told, only Peter Pan can change Peter Pan,” said Falzone. “That’s why it’s extremely important to know what you want out of a relationship before you are actually in one and communicate that with who you are dating. If that’s not important to them, you really need to decide if it’s worth the investment.”

Local Boy Scouts District volunteers to man water stations at 2011 Old Sandwich Road Race.

March 22, 2011 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

The Old Sandwich Road Race (OSRR), part of which takes place on America’s oldest road—Old Sandwich Road in Plymouth—recently announced that scouts from the Boy Scouts of America’s Old Colony Council will be manning the water stations for the half marathon and Entergy 10k on Sunday, June 5.

“We are thrilled to have the Boy Scouts of America on board with the rest of our dedicated volunteers,” said Craig Valentine Brenner, OSRR race director. “It was quite muggy for the first Old Sandwich Road Race. Since we expect to double the 500-plus runners who participated last year, we made a conscious decision for this year’s race to add several more water stations. Having this kind of manpower available to operate these stations properly will improve the experience and, probably, times for our runners.”

Scouts from the Cranberry Harbor district of the Old Colony Council BSA will work the water stations for the Old Sandwich Road Race’s Sunday events.  Scout participation in the Old Sandwich Road Race, which donates its proceeds to the Home for Little Wanderers’ Baird Center School in Plymouth, counts towards the scout’s community service requirement for several badges.

“The Boy Scouts are glad to be a part of this effort for a number of reasons, first and foremost the cause, The Baird Center School, an organization that the BSA has been involved with over the years,” said Barry Wood, the Cranberry Harbor’s district commissioner. “The Boy Scouts get asked to volunteer for a number of community endeavors. The Old Sandwich Road Race is desirable because of the cause, the history of the area but most importantly because it’s an activity that brings people from the community together.”

The 2011 Old Sandwich Road Race will take place over the course of two days, Saturday, June 4 and Sunday, June 5. The Saturday race will feature the Kids Classic and a new addition to the Old Sandwich Road Race, the OSRR 5k. Sunday’s main events include the OSRR Half Marathon, which takes place on Old Sandwich Road, and the Entergy 10k, beginning at Plimouth Plantation. All races end at Plymouth South High School.

Volunteers are still needed for race planning, fundraising and race weekend activities ranging from registration, water stations, security and more. If interested, send an e-mail to info@oldsandwichroadrace.com with “Volunteer” in the subject line or visit www.oldsandwichroadrace.com and click on the volunteers link.

“Volunteers are really the backbone of any race of this nature,” said Brenner. “Based on the initial registrations, the Old Sandwich Road Race is really on the verge of becoming a destination race. If you’re a runner, or used to be a runner, or just somebody who wants to help out a race that’s trying to raise money for a worthy cause, you couldn’t ask for a better race to be a part of.”

Originally a trail used by the Wampanoag Native American tribe, Old Sandwich Road later became the nation’s first true public road and a stagecoach route to ferry passengers and mail back and forth between the Massachusetts towns of Plymouth and Sandwich. Today, the road remains pretty much as the Pilgrims left it–a wide, scenic, dirt road bordered by beautiful tall pine trees and towering oaks.

For complete information on the Old Sandwich Road Race, you can visit the Old Sandwich Road Race Web site at http://www.oldsandwichroadrace.com. Selected by Runner’s World, as “one of the five races not to miss in 2010”, The Old Sandwich Road Race also has pages on Facebook and Twitter. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring next year’s race, please contact Craig Valentine Brenner at 617-680-4230 or info@oldsandwichroadrace.com.
