South Shore Skin Center and Spa Dermatologists Provide 5 Sun Protection Tips for Babies & Toddlers

July 28, 2011 //  by admin

Every time we go outdoors, we’re exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) rays and the repeated exposure builds over time. The delicate skin of babies and toddlers is particularly susceptible to sunburn and UV damage.

According to Dr. Ramzi W. Saad, Board Certified dermatologist and partner at South Shore Skin Center and Spa, “UV damage can happen at any age, but it begins to occur during childhood. The more frequent the exposure to Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) rays without protection, the greater the risk of developing melanoma or skin cancer as an adult. Parents and caregivers are responsible for protecting the very young, so knowing HOW to best protect them is key.”

The dermatologists at South Shore Skin Center and Spa provide the following expert advice to parents and caregivers for protecting the skin of very young children from harmful UVA/UVB rays from the sun (which are present even on cloudy days):

1. Apply a chemical-free sunscreen containing an SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreen may be applied to babies older than six months and toddlers. Look for products that are chemical free and have 10 percent micronized Zinc Oxide such as Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen Baby SPF 30+ or Solbar Shield SPF 40.

2. Dress young children in sun protective clothing. Covering up the skin with clothing is one of the most effective ways of protecting the sensitive skin of babies and toddlers. Sun hats with wide brims and flaps to shade ears and neck, lightweight long sleeved shirts, sun rompers and swim bodysuits provide good coverage. Brands such as Coolibar offer 50+ UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing. Other sun protective clothing brands may be found online or at retailer REI.

3. Sunglasses help protect the delicate eye area. Skin cancer can develop anywhere on the body, including eyelids. Because sunscreen cannot be applied on or around the eyes, it’s important to shield the eye area from UV rays. For young children, opt for rubber or flexible frames and shatterproof lenses. To ensure that lenses provide UVA/UVB protection, look for the statement “100% UVA/UVB protection” label on the lense when making your purchase.

4. Seek shade. Shady areas not only offer some cool relief on a hot summer day, but some protection from UV rays.

5. Block UVA/UVB rays in babies younger than six months. Sunscreen should not be applied to babies younger than six months of age, yet exposed skin is left vulnerable without sunscreen. So, how do you protect your baby’s skin from UV rays? Follow tips 2, 3 and 4.

Dr. Saad continued, “As children become more independent, parents and caregivers have a greater challenge of ensuring their tweens and teens wear sunscreen every day, seek shade and wear protective clothing. That is one reason why it is imperative that children learn ‘sun safe’ habits at a very young age because they will have a better understanding of the importance of protecting their skin as they grow older.”

Melanoma is the most common cancer in young white women ages 25-29 and second only to breast cancer in women ages 30-34. New England has the highest concentration of melanoma cases in the United States.

“It cannot be stressed enough that one of the key ways to minimize melanoma mortality is to protect the skin from UVA and UVB rays, starting in early childhood,” noted Dr. Saad.

VISIA Complexion Analysis Now Available at South Shore Skin Center and Spa in Plymouth

June 23, 2011 //  by admin

Ever wonder if there was a better way to care for your skin? Looking to gain insight on the condition of your skin – above and below the surface?

South Shore Skin Center and Spa, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset, now offers VISIA Complexion Analysis, which can identify the skin’s condition both topically and sub-surface – enabling the Spa team to provide a truly customized skin care maintenance and treatment plan.

“VISIA provides an in-depth analysis of the skin’s surface and sub-surface which enables us to individualize facial rejuvenation and skin care regimen,” noted Ramzi Saad, M.D.

“The extent of UV damage (“Ultraviolet” damage caused by the sun and tanning beds) is not visible to the naked eye, but VISIA enables us to identify UV damage and recommend products or treatments accordingly.”

With VISIA’s precise imaging, South Shore Skin Center and Spa can now monitor a patient’s complexion vitality and check the effectiveness of the patient’s skin care regimen over time. VISIA’s skin and complexion analysis measures wrinkles and the depth of pores; analyzes the skin’s condition and pigment disturbances; recognizes porphyrins from bacteria and identifies UV damage. A VISIA Complexion Analysis takes approximately 30 minutes.

A VISIA Complexion Analysis is the first step of South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s “SkinPlan” – a unique, three-step skin care consultation and analysis. Following the VISIA Complexion Analysis,

a South Shore Skin Center and Spa expert will discuss the results of the evaluation and recommend results-oriented treatments and products in a customized SkinPlan. The second step of the SkinPlan is In-Clinic Treatments utilizing South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s highly advanced suite of services to help patients obtain their ideal skin. The third step is In-Home Care, where specific corrective skin care products are recommended for use at-home to accelerate and enhance patients’ In-Clinic treatments.

VISIA Complexion Analysis is only available at South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s Plymouth location.

To schedule a complimentary VISIA Complexion Analysis, the first step in South Shore Skin Center and Spa’s SkinPlan, contact the Plymouth office (508) 747-0711.

South Shore Skin Center Dermatologists Share Insight on Foods that are Good for the Skin

October 10, 2009 //  by admin

The adage “beauty comes from within” doesn’t just apply to the beauty of the soul…The beauty of your skin comes from within – and what you’ve been eating. The dermatologists at South Shore Skin Center know that beautiful skin depends on a number of factors and diet plays a significant part in your skin’s health and beauty.

South Shore Skin Center practitioners share their insight on various foods that may (and those that may not) help you maintain beautiful skin:

· Foods that are rich in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables are highly beneficial to the skin.

· Dairy is not beneficial to the skin, but it’s not bad for it either. There has been some controversy about dairy causing acne, but the doctors at South Shore Skin Center maintain that dairy does not cause acne.

· Whole grains that are low-fat are good for the skin. Bear in mind that grains such as flaxseed are better absorbed by the body if they are ground into meal before eating them. Adding at least one teaspoon of ground flaxseed to your diet per day is sufficient.

· Good hydration is good for the skin. Beware of drinking beverages containing caffeine, which is a diuretic. Drinking a lot of caffeinated beverages is not recommended because caffeine in large amounts will have a dehydrating effect. Drinking water is best for hydration.

· Try to eat foods that are rich in Omega 3s, which are essential fatty acids and benefit all organs. A typical diet that includes soybean oil has a much higher ratio of Omega 6, which actually blocks Omega 3 absorption. It’s better to eat foods made with olive or canola oil as these have a low ratio of Omega 6 and will not block the absorption of Omega 3s.

“When it comes to the health and beauty of the skin, the foods that we eat really do play an important part,” noted Dr. Richard Eisen, a board certified dermatologist and founder of South Shore Skin Center.
