Have Diabetes? Boston Podiatrists Offer Foot Care Tips

July 8, 2013 //  by admin

People who have been diagnosed with Diabetes are at greater risk for infection from an injury to the foot, even if that injury is minor, such as a scrape.

Boston Common Podiatry’s Jordana Szpiro, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and Shannon Thompson, D.P.M. offer the following tips to people affected by diabetes:

-Inspect feet and between the toes daily, checking for: dry or cracking skin, corns and calluses, any unusual lesions, discolored or thick nails. Those with Type I or Type II Diabetes who may be experiencing any of these symptoms are at risk for infection and should see a primary care physician or podiatrist immediately for treatment.

-Check shoes and socks for foreign objects before putting them on. A minor scrape incurred by a pebble in the shoe is a major health concern for people with diabetes as there is a risk of infection. A person with diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage) is at even greater risk for infection from a scrape because s/he would not be able to feel they have an injury.

-Check the temperature of soaking or bath water with the hands first to avoid scalding. A minor burn can turn into an open wound and become infected.

-Wear white socks only because the dyes in colored socks can be toxic if absorbed into open wounds and cause infection.

-Have shoes sized and fit by a professional. Shoes that are too large will allow the foot to move within the shoe and chafe the skin. Shoes that are too small can pinch the feet and cause blisters, which may become infected.

-Be aware of any changes in sensation or circulation. Numbness or tingling in the feet may be a sign of neuropathy due to elevated glucose levels over a significant period of time.

– People with diabetes should not cut their own toenails. Again, the risk of cutting nails incorrectly (resulting in ingrown toenails), cutting nails too short, or of nicking the skin is significant. Have a podiatrist do it.

If there is a sign that there is something wrong, schedule an appointment with a podiatrist immediately.

Boston Common Podiatry treats a large number of senior and Medicare patients. The setting is a private; there is no wait time and no referral needed.

60 seconds to stomp out skin cancer – routine foot self exams can increase early detection, survival

May 22, 2013 //  by admin

The next time you clip your toenails, take a closer look at the rest of your feet. An extra 60 seconds could save your life.

Boston Common Podiatry’s Jordana, Szpiro, DPM, FACFAS, is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS). The Boston foot and ankle surgeon says routine self-examinations of the feet are an important way to find skin cancer early, when it’s easiest to cure. Half of the people who learn they have melanoma of the foot die within five years because the cancer had already spread throughout their body by the time it was diagnosed.

Nearly 60,000 people will learn they have melanoma this year. It’s not known how many of those cases will involve the foot, but more than 8,100 melanoma patients will die… nearly one death every hour. If melanoma is detected in its earliest stages, 92 percent of patients are alive after five years.

Unlike many other types of cancer, melanoma strikes people of all age groups, even the young. Routine foot self-exams increase the likelihood of noticing suspicious moles, freckles or other spots.

Dr. Szpiro recommends focusing on the three most common areas for foot melanoma: the soles, between the toes, and around or under the toenails. She notes melanoma can develop anywhere on the body including areas that receive little sun exposure, such as the feet and ankles. If a mole, freckle or spot starts to change over the course of a month and becomes asymmetrical or changes its border, color, diameter or elevation, contact Boston Common Podiatry at 617-262-2266 immediately. Those are the ABCDEs, or signs, of melanoma.

For more information on malignant melanoma of the foot, visit the ACFAS patient Web site FootHealthFacts.org.

Boston Podiatrists Offer Healthy Feet Tips for Seniors

March 20, 2013 //  by admin

Maintaining foot health is especially important in those over 55 years of age.

Dr. Jordana Szpiro, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S. and Dr. Shannon Thompson, D.P.M., podiatrists at Boston Common Podiatry offer the following tips to seniors:

1. Inspect your feet and between the toes daily checking for: dry or cracking skin, corns and calluses, any unusual lesions, discolored or thick nails

2. Clean and moisturize daily.

3. Check your shoe size yearly. If the arch collapses or the foot widens shoes that are too tight or not supportive enough can lead to foot pain, ingrown toenails or painful corns

4. Warning signs something may be wrong:

-Burning, tingling or dulled sensation

-Open sores that appear for no reason

-Delayed healing of wounds

-Foot or leg pain after walking short distances

-Discoloration of feet or toes

5. Diabetic foot care tips:

-Check your shoes and socks for foreign objects before putting them on

-Check temperature of soaking or bath water with the hands first to make avoid scalding.

-Wear white socks only because the dyes in colored socks can be toxic if absorbed into open wounds and cause infection.

-Have shoes sized and fit by a professional

-Be aware of any changes in sensation or circulation

According to Dr. Szpiro, “If you notice a warning sign, don’t wait. Some warning signs that exhibit in the feet can indicate a more serious health issue. Schedule an appointment with your podiatrist as soon as possible.”

Boston Common Podiatry treats a large number of senior and Medicare patients. They prefer Boston Common Podiatry’s private setting to a clinical environment and the fact that there is no wait time and no referral needed.

Local Podiatrists Bring “Miracle Filler for the Feet” to Boston

February 7, 2013 //  by admin

Experiencing foot pain from wearing high heels? The podiatrists at Boston Common Podiatry have brought “Miracle Filler for the Feet”, an innovative technique which is being used around the country, to Boston.

No more stuffing padding in your shoes to increase comfort, or switching from beautiful designer high heels to flats, or worse, avoiding high heels all together.

Dr. Jordana Szpiro, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S. and Dr. Shannon Thompson, D.P.M., are now offering “Miracle Filler for the Feet”. The “miracle filler” is Sculptra, an injectable filler commonly administered to the face by plastic surgeons, which is injected into the foot using a patented technique. Foot fillers, revolutionized in New York City and now used around the country, provide padding and relief for up to a year.

Both podiatrists at the practice have been specially trained in the administration of Sculptra to the feet.

“‘Miracle Filler for the Feet’ can benefit those who wear high heels as well as those with atrophied fat pads, which is a natural condition that develops as we age,” explained Dr. Szpiro.

She continued, “Think of it as adding some much needed padding to the inside of your feet rather than the outside. As you’re walking, the biomechanics move the Sculptra to the right spot on your feet, creating a cushion. And, the Sculptra lasts quite a while – between eight to twelve months.”

Boston Common Podiatry offers “Miracle Filler for the Feet” at $600 per foot.

For more information, contact the office at 617-262-2266.

Boston Podiatrist Offers Tips to Keep Feet in Tip-Top Shape During the Holiday Season

December 3, 2012 //  by admin

‘Tis the season for sky high, closed-toe stilettos, wedges and glitzy strap sandals. But how do you ensure foot comfort and health while donning fashionable footwear for the holidays?

Boston Common Podiatry, led by established Boston podiatrist and board certified foot surgeon Jordana Szpiro, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., offers six key tips for keeping your feet in tip-top shape during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

If you suffer from:

Hammertoes – Be sure that if you’re wearing closed-toe shoes and that they are the correct size and have adequate room in the toe box.

Ingrown toenails – Avoid pointy toed shoes or shoes that are too small.

Flat feet or fallen arches – It’s best to find shoes with good arch support. Even in high heels, certain shoes have more contoured arches than others.

Plantar fasciitis – Contrary to popular belief, flat shoes aren’t the best solution for all foot problems. Heels will actually feel better than flatter shoes, but be sure to stretch your calf and behind the ankle well before bed. If you’re having pain in the bottom of the heels, avoid any type of kitten heel.

Ankle weakness or previous foot/ankle injury – Heels make your ankles very vulnerable to inversion injuries and sprains, so it’s best to wear something with an ankle strap and thicker heel. Wedges can be particularly destabilizing.

Additionally, avoid frostbite if you are out in open sandals by wearing tights or nylons if possible. Take transportation when possible, even if you’re not travelling a great distance and have a pair of socks handy for when in transit. If you think you may have suffered prolonged exposure, soak in warm, not hot water before bed and wear warm socks to bed.

According to Dr. Szpiro, “You can still wear the hottest styles, but choose wisely. If you have ongoing foot issues, these recommendations should be taken into consideration to ensure comfort and avoid further aggravation of the foot condition.”

Scandex Announces New Podiatry Division

March 1, 2010 //  by admin

Scandex, LLC, one of the largest providers of Swedish ergonomic chairs and stools in the U.S. and Canada, has recently launched a new Podiatry Division to cater to the unique seating requirements of podiatrists and their office staff.

Scandex is the top of the mind choice for podiatrists the world over, Podiatrists who require a chair (for themselves as well as their staff) with superb back/lumbar support to help minimize lower back problems and reduce the potential for musculoskeletal disorders turn to Scandex.

Scandex Swedish ergonomic chairs and stools are designed for proper seating so the lumbar area is supported and the spine maintains the proper “S” position. The most popular seating for podiatrists are the Bruno Ergonomic Office Chair, Series 300 and the Björn Ergonomic Saddle Stool, Series 400/600. Both automatically seat a podiatrist in a correct posture. The Bjorn Saddle Stool also positions a podiatrist nearer to the patient which reduces overall strain on the back, shoulders and neck muscles. The Björn Ergonomic Saddle Stool, Series 400/600 is recommended if space is tight. Arm supports are available options of each of these models.

“A poor body position is largely responsible for the ill effects of prolonged sitting. Poor body positions can also originate from job design that requires employees to sit uninterrupted for longer than one hour. The duration of sitting, along with the shape of the body in a sitting position is the most critical risk factor,” explained Sven Emilsson, Director of Sales at Scandex.

He continued, “Podiatrists understand this very well and the demand for our Swedish ergonomic seating has increased significantly so much so that we have developed a new division to cater to their specific needs.”

Podiatrists Can “Build” their own Ergonomic Chair

Scandex recently launched the second generation of their website, http://www.scandex.us which provides podiatrists and their office staff with a Selection Guide that provides guidelines for utilization of Scandex’s Swedish ergonomic chairs and stools in various settings. Individual sections on the website for types of arm supports, upholstery, cleaning and care allow podiatrist to “build” their own chair to preference. Podiatrists may also take advantage of Scandex special “Rent-A-Chair” option.

To speak with a Chiropractic Division sales representative contact 1-888-245-1367 or visit www.Scandex.us.

Scandex – A Uniquely Different Way of Sitting

Scandex, LLC is one of the nation’s largest providers of Swedish ergonomic chairs and stools.
