South Shore Skin Center Announces 2nd Anniversary of Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit & New Surgeon

June 14, 2013 //  by admin

Navid Bouzari, MD, Board Certified Dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon

South Shore Skin Center celebrates the second anniversary of their Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit located at One Scobee Circle in Plymouth, and announces the addition of Navid Bouzari, M.D., Board Certified Dermatologist and Mohs micrographic surgeon.

As one of only two Mohs micrographic surgical centers for skin cancer in Southeastern Mass., the Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit offers the highest level of skin cancer care for patients located on Cape Cod and south of Boston. The treatment center is led by Richard F. Eisen, M.D., a Board Certified Dermatologist and highly skilled Mohs micrographic surgeon.

Dr. Eisen is joined by Navid Bouzari, M.D. a Boston-trained Mohs micrographic surgeon. Dr. Bouzari is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and is on staff at South Shore Hospital in South Weymouth and Jordan Hospital in Plymouth. He is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American College of Mohs Surgeons, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, the Massachusetts Medical Society and the Melanoma Skin Cancer Committee of the American Academy of Dermatology. He is an internationally published author on dermatological issues and diseases.

The Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit is conveniently located, reducing the need for patients on the South Shore to travel long distances through high traffic areas to receive Mohs surgery. Appointments are scheduled in a timely manner to minimize wait times for patients awaiting skin cancer treatment. The 2,780 square foot surgical center houses seven surgical suites, a histotech laboratory, nursing suite and a spacious reception area. On-site free parking is available. New patients and referrals are accepted.

The Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit works closely with a patient’s primary care physician or dermatologist to ensure the highest level of communication and care in the treatment and management of all types of skin cancer.

About Mohs Micrographic Surgery

Mohs micrographic surgery is special skin cancer surgery performed at the Skin Cancer Mohs Surgery Unit that is very precise and removes the least amount of tissue to remove the cancer with the highest cure rates. This type of surgery is used to treat basal and squamous cell carcinomas as well as melanoma. It is ideal for skin cancer on the face, instances of recurring cancer and large or ill-defined areas of cancer.

“The number of cases of skin cancer is rising rapidly in the greater Boston area, particularly on the South Shore,” explained Dr. Eisen.

He continued, “The Skin Cancer Surgery Unit is well-situated at the half-way point between Boston and Cape Cod and conveniently located at exit 7 off Route 3. Our accessibility and our ‘no wait list’ for skin cancer surgery are a couple of reasons why we’ve been so successful.”

Warding Off Acne Flare-Ups…Tips for Teens from South Shore Skin Center

August 19, 2009 //  by admin

COHASSET AND PLYMOUTH, MASS… As teens head back to school, many of them will have to face their peers while suffering from an acne breakout.

Acne affects almost everyone at some point in their lives, and teenagers can expect to experience at least one agonizing acne episode.  The hardest hit are teenage boys.   The good news is that acne is not caused by eating chocolate or French fries.  The bad news is that acne is typically caused by hormone fluctuations, which is something teens can’t control.

South Shore Skin Center offers these tips to help teens ward off acne flare-ups:

·     Wash (don’t scrub) your face twice a day with a very gentle soap or water based skin cleanser. Oil and dead skin cells are typically the cause of pimples, so avoid any cleansers that contain oil such as cold creams.

·     Never squeeze your pimples as it can cause an infection, worse acne and potentially scar your skin.

·     Try using an over-the-counter product that is designed to unclog pores and dry up oil and blemishes (such as Clearasil or Stri-Dex).  Be sure to follow the package instructions.  Too frequent use of these over the counter medications may actually cause acne to become worse.

·     Try not to touch your face.  Although you can’t see it, your hands contain oil which is transferred when you touch your face and can cause a break-out.

·     Your hair is another culprit that can transfer oil to your face.  Find a hairstyle that keeps hair away from your face and do not use a lot of hair gel or other hair products because they tend to contain oil.

·     Sunlight can actually aggravate acne.  Try to limit your sun exposure.  If you are going to be in the sun, be sure to wear (oil-free) sunscreen.

“Acne is caused by overproduction of sebum (oil), which is regulated by hormones, coupled with the obstruction of the pores.  People can get acne at any age, but teens are most likely to experience it because it is triggered by hormone changes.  Stress and some prescribed medications can contribute to hormone fluctuation.  Acne is not caused by foods such as chocolate and greasy French fries.  In fact, severe acne is hereditary,” explained Dr. Ramzi Saad, dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center.

While most acne sufferers’ breakouts are not serious and do not result in scarring, at least 40 percent of all cases need to be treated by a physician.

For severe acne (up to a hundred or so pimples covering face and body) that may potentially result in scarring, South Shore Skin Center offers several types of treatments including:  Gentle YAG, which is a gentle, safe and effective type of laser treatment; Photodynamic Therapy which uses a light source in conjunction with chemical therapy; and Thermage, which is a minimally invasive procedure that uses radio frequency.

South Shore Skin Center also offers several treatments to erase acne scarring.

Dr. Saad continued, “Most cases of teen acne are not severe and can be treated at home.  For severe acne and scarring, medical treatment is advisable and we offer several innovative therapies to heal and improve the skin.”

South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset, cautions consumers about “Botox Parties” where Botox injections are one of the highlights of the party.

Botox parties are very popular, especially with brides and their bridal parties who want to look their best on the “big day”. Botox is used to treat lines around the eyes, frown lines between the eyes, and lines on the forehead that often appear with age. Botox works by relaxing the muscles that contract to form these lines, creating a smoother appearance in the treated areas. Yet, there is significant health risk to those who receive Botox injections outside of a doctor’s office.

South Shore Skin Center warns consumers of the dangers of receiving Botox injections anywhere but a physician’s office:

· The Botox used in a home setting or other non-medical environment may not be direct from Allergan, the makers of the highest grade of Botox Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin A) which is FDA approved. There is no guarantee that the solution being used at a party is even safe for injection.

· If laboratory botulinum toxin is used, rather than Botox Cosmetic, systemic effects may occur as were seen in the case of the doctor, several years ago, who paralyzed several patients and himself by injecting high concentrations of veterinary grade botulism toxin. Individuals should check to be sure that the bottle says “Botox Cosmetic”.

· If the Botox is not reconstituted properly and/or not kept refrigerated, it may become inactive.

· If sterile conditions are not observed when reconstituting or administering the Botox, infection may develop.

· At a Botox party, there are no medical personnel on hand to assist in case of an immediate adverse reaction.

· Administration of Botox by those who are untrained may not be done correctly. Improper placement of the Botox may result in brow droop. Other side effects include bruising, headache and lid droop.

“Although a Botox type of solution may be obtained outside of a physician’s office, we do not recommend using it. The risk of serious illness, adverse effects and infection is significant when a questionable solution of Botox is injected by those who are not qualified,” explained Dr. Richard Eisen, dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center.

He continued, “At South Shore Skin Center, patient safety is a priority. For anyone who is interested in receiving Botox Cosmetic, we recommend that you consult a dermatologist.”

Dr. Eisen is among Allergan Corp.’s national training staff in the use of Botox Cosmetic. South Shore Skin Center uses only the highest grade of Botox Cosmetic available, known as Botulinum Toxin A, which is an FDA approved, highly purified form of the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium made by Allergan, to ensure patient safety. Qualified medical staff who administer Botox Cosmetic at South Shore Skin Center are fully trained.
