Why ENERGY STAR makes dollars and sense…Less expensive to run and tax credits and rebates make ENERGY STAR products a must.

June 1, 2009 //  by admin

OTTAWA, ON…

Most people want to know what they can do to make their dollar go further, particularly when purchasing household appliances. While most consumers have their eyes on the price tag, it really should be on how much it costs to power those appliances, and that’s where ENERGY STAR comes in.

ENERGY STAR is the international symbol of premium energy efficiency. Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency (OEE) promotes the international ENERGY STAR symbol in Canada and monitors its use. Typically, ENERGY STAR products offer 20 to 30 percent savings on your energy bills.  DirectBuy of Ottawa, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, sells a wide ride range of ENERGY STAR products to help members save.

“The irony about ENERGY STAR products is the program itself was set up to combat the negative effect that running our appliances was having on our environment,” said Lise Girard, owner of DirectBuy of Ottawa. “While most people do want to minimize their carbon footprint, in today’s economy, it’s just as much about how much you can save by having appliances that run more efficiently.”

So, how much can you save by purchasing ENERGY STAR appliances? Here’s a small sampling:

  • Clothes washers – replacing a 10-year-old washing machine with a new ENERGY STAR machine can save a household more than $160 per year.
  • Dishwashers – ENERGY STAR dishwashers use 41 percent less energy and water than non-ENERGY STAR washers. That translates to more than $30 a year on your utility bill.
  • Refrigerators – a typical two-door, freezer-on-top refrigerator can cost more than $110 per year to run. Upgrading to ENERGY STAR can knock $30 per year off that, resulting in savings of nearly $400 in just five years.
  • Home electronics – the average household spends more than $100 per year powering electronics devices in “standby” mode. ENERGY STAR products use less energy when in standby.
  • LED Lighting – requires 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and lasts 25 times longer. According to Natural Resources Canada, LED lighting can last more than 25,000 hours than its incandescent counterparts or more than 22 years!

In addition to those savings, Canadians who replace their cooling or heating systems with ENERGY STAR systems are eligible for grants up to $5,000 from the federal government. Grant information can be found on the Office of Energy Efficiency Web site at http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca/.

Canadian residents who replace their heating systems might also be eligible for a Home Renovation Tax Credit for the 2009 tax year. The credit applies to expenditures more than $1,000 and less than $10,000, with the credit being no more than $1,350 per family. For eligibility guidelines, please visit the Home Tax Renovation Credit page on the Canadian Revenue Agency’s Web site at www.cra-arc.gc.ca.

“As a company that deals specifically in home improvement, we often hear the expression that this project will pay for itself, but that usually means at resale of your home,” said Girard. “When it comes to ENERGY STAR products, they literally do pay for themselves over time—without selling your home—and lessen the impact on the environment. That’s really an unbeatable combination.”

DirectBuy carries a large selection of ENERGY STAR products and appliances at wholesale prices direct from manufacturers or their authorized suppliers. In addition, each DirectBuy club employs product specialists and designers who can help members select the appliance that works best for their home.

Since 1971, DirectBuy clubs have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. With locations all across Canada, consumers can enjoy a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

For more information on a DirectBuy membership, you can visit www.directbuycares.com. For more information on ENERGY STAR, go to

http://oee.nrcan.gc.ca.

Founder of Boot Camp for New Dads Helps New Fathers Deal with Economic Realities

June 1, 2009 //  by admin

Working with more than 200,000 new dads over the past 19 years, Greg Bishop, founder of Boot Camp for New Dads (http://www.bcnd.org), a non-profit orientation program for fathers-to-be, operating in more than 260 hospitals, clinics, schools, fire stations and churches around North America and internationally, offers advice for new dads who are dealing with economic realities in his latest book Crash Course for New Dads – Tools, Checklists and Cheat-sheets.

Today’s economic realities create difficult circumstances. Many careers demand long working hours and a new baby adds to your financial requirements. Two income families may find they now have to rely on just one income which further puts a strain on the amount of time a working parent can spend with baby.

Bishop explains, “The first three years of a child’s life are the most vital in shaping who s/he will become later in life. A parent will never have other opportunities like those when a child is an infant, so a working parent must make sure that s/he does spend time – even if it is just a couple of hours a week – alone with baby now.”

Many veteran dads have faced such circumstances. Bishop shares strategies from Crash Course for New Dads for when a working parent’s time is short:

· Hardly home? Make the time you do have count as much as possible. Change those diapers. Set the tone that despite work obligations, you are here to be a player and be involved.

· Play with your baby before you leave in the morning and just after you get home. It has been found that babies sleep longer when a parent plays with them at night.

· Strive for solutions that enable you to spend time with your child. Be creative. Figure out how to work from home; even once a week is better than nothing.

· Play a strong role in providing emotional support for your partner who is home with your baby most of the time. Call, email or text each other to ask how s/he is doing and get the update on junior’s accomplishments of the day.

· When home, spend time alone with your baby. Don’t let your limited experience as a care giver interfere. Send your partner out with friends so you can enjoy some one-on-one time with baby.

· Don’t allow yourself to feel diminished because you can’t spend lots of time with your new child. Your work and income is your family’s lifeline.

Bishop continued, “Finding time to spend with baby is often an ongoing challenge for many working parents. Two-thirds of Boot Camp veteran dads reported that they would spend more time at home with their children if they were financially able to do so. Even though the time spent with your baby may be brief, it is well-spent and benefits both parent and child.”

Fatherhood Books Serve as a “Play by Play” Guides

Greg Bishop offers strategies from more than 200,000 new dads that have gone through the Boot Camp for New Dads program in both of his books, Crash Course for New Dads: Tools, Checklists and Cheat Sheets and his first book, Hit the Ground Crawling, which covers work balance, being a dad, caring for a new mom and much more. Both books are available online at www.DadsAdventure.com.

New Dads Learn What to Expect at Boot Camp Workshops

Dads-to-be will be better equipped to face the challenges and opportunities of fatherhood after attending a Boot Camp “hands on” educational workshop. Men attend the class when they are expecting their first baby, and are joined in the workshop by “veterans” who had previously attended and have returned with their two to four-month-old baby in tow. They are able to give the dads-to-be a realistic idea of what to do and what to expect when their first baby comes. For many men attending, it’s their first time holding a baby.

Boot Camp for New Dads

Now celebrating their 19th year, Boot Camp for New Dads is nationally acclaimed as the “Best Practice” for preparing men to be fathers and has been named a U.S. Navy Model Program. Boot Camp for New Dads has prepared more than 200,000 men for fatherhood over the years.

With more than 4.1 million births (National Center for Health Statistics), and approximately 1.5 million men becoming new dads every year, it’s more important than ever for fathers to realize that being a “good provider” is only part of the very central role they have in their children’s lives.

For more information about Boot Camp for New Dads, visit www.bcnd.org, or to visit Dads Adventure, go to www.Dadsadventure.com. To arrange an interview with Greg Bishop, please contact sdubin@prworkzone.com, (781) 582-1061.

No recession on love…The Right One/Together Dating announces growth during so-called recession.

June 1, 2009 //  by admin

NORWELL, MA…

How do you grow a company during a recession? Sell a commodity for which there’s always a demand. In the case of The Right One and Together Dating—one of the largest brick-and-mortar dating services with more than 60 locations in North America—that’s the possibility of love and romance.

At the end of last year, from October through December—the very height of the recession–The Right One and Together Dating experienced an 18 percent increase in new memberships from the same time period the year before. On top of that, during the last six months, The Right One and Together Dating have opened new locations in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Chicago and Schaumburg, Illinois and Austin and San Antonio, Texas.

“If I had a dollar for every news report or broadcast that started with ‘in these tough economic times’ I could retire tomorrow,” said Paul A. Falzone, CEO of The Right One and Together Dating. “That’s not to say there aren’t people and businesses out there struggling. We’ve had our share of challenges as well. But times like these call for a new plan of attack, not white flags. We’ve been able to grow because we kept looking for ways to run our business better.”

The Right One and Together Dating have plans for additional growth over the rest of 2009. That includes the opening four more locations and the recent hiring of Northeast Regional Director Jill Vandor.

“That’s another thing I’m quite proud of. We have been hiring continuously throughout this period when the recession began and there doesn’t seem to be a slowdown in sight. There are very few companies that can say that,” said Falzone.

As one of the world’s largest brick-and-mortar dating services, The Right One and Together Dating offers singles a viable option to online dating services, which could see you at your computer for weeks on end sifting through profiles—many of which might not be 100 percent truthful. The Right One and Together Dating screens clients thoroughly, including background check, to effectively and safely match singles who are more likely to be compatible.

“Our business really isn’t about the economic times as timing. Is this the right time in your life to find that special someone? Are you ready for that special relationship? If tough economic times mean people can take a step back and look at their lives to see what’s really important, then there is a silver lining to all this negative talk about the economy.”

To arrange a consultation with a professional matchmaker or for membership, contact The Right One toll-free at 800-818-DATE (3283).

Sharing the spotlight…Boston Pack and Ship donates boxes and packing supplies to Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops’ Memorial Day event.

May 29, 2009 //  by admin

BRAINTREE, MA and BREWSTER, MA…

On May 25, Memorial Day, Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops held its 5th annual Spotlight on the Troops at the K-Mart Plaza on Route 132 in Hyannis. In addition to honoring U.S. service men and women at the event, Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops collected items for care packages to be sent to troops serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. Boston Pack and Ship, a Braintree-based small load shipping specialist, donated 200 boxes and packing supplies towards this effort.

Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops is a non-profit organization started by 15-year-old Dylan DeSilva of Brewster, Mass. Dylan wanted to find a way to honor U.S. Troops for their service and sacrifice to our country. With the help of his family and friends, he sends care packages to our Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan on a weekly basis. The Spotlight on the Troops is just one of the vehicles Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops holds to generate awareness and collect donations.

“Good things may come in small packages, but without the packages, we can’t collect or send anything anywhere. So we really appreciate Boston Pack and Ship’s generous donation as some of those were used to collect donations at the Spotlight on the Troops event and the rest will be used to ship the care packages overseas,” said DeSilva.

Donating to Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops is not a new endeavor for Boston Pack and Ship. The Braintree-based packing and shipping company also donated boxes to Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops holiday effort in which more than 500 care packages were sent to troops overseas.

“When we heard Dylan’s story, it wasn’t a question of would we help, but how much could we help,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship. “By donating boxes for the event and the mailing, as well as selling additional boxes at cost, we’re hopefully doing our part in keeping this very worthwhile effort going.”

For people who would like to contribute items for the care packages, Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops’ Web site, www.capecod4thetroops.com, contains a complete list of personal, food and other useful items you can donate. Interested parties can donate at the Spotlight on the Troops event on Monday, May 25 or at any of the drop-off locations also listed on www.capecod4thetroops.com.

If you would like to make a monetary contribution, please send a check to: Cape Cod Cares For Our Troops Troops, 1831 Long Pond Rd.  Brewster, MA  02631.

Plymouth South freshmen get the treatment from upper classmen…Tutoring program mentors receive Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac’s “Driven Student” award.

May 29, 2009 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

As a high school student, your freshman year can be the most difficult. New school, new teachers and more demanding homework. To help freshman class members struggling with the heavier workload, Plymouth South High School developed a tutoring program with upper classmen acting as mentors. The upper classmen who participated in this very successful program were honored recently as the Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac Driven Students of the month for May.

To honor these students, Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac treated several members of the tutoring team to a pizza party. Those taking part included: Sara Amell, Kiana Barrett, Derek Basler, Josh Begley, John Carroll, Diane Coon, Jackie Davies, Justin Embree, Leah Fahey, Kate Hagenburg, Crystal Jankowski, Eric McCue, Stefanie Morrison, Sean Mulvey, Kelly Noonan, Sean Reid, Brianna Thissell, Taylor Wilson, Matt Mulligan and Thomas Murphy.

“The stereotype is that freshman are generally picked on by the upper classmen. With this tutoring program, we have smashed that perception,” said Yvonne Loranger, one of the program’s faculty advisors, along with Matt Carpentino. “These students carry full academic loads as well as balancing other activities and still have taken time out to help their fellow students. That’s beyond commendable. And the bottom line is that it’s benefitted the students they’ve been tutoring tremendously.”

Adds Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac President Jeff Tracy, “Being a high school student is tough enough without adding anything else to your plate. By taking part in this tutoring program, these students are not only helping out this crop of freshman, but setting an example for the entire school. For that, they are most deserving of this month’s ‘Driven Student’ award.”

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac’s Driven Student program recognizes Plymouth high school students for their performance and achievements in and out of the classroom. Awarded on a monthly basis, recipients are selected by faculty and advisors at the student’s given school.
