Old Colony Elder Services Launches Lawn Sign Campaign for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – June 15th

June 2, 2021 //  by admin

In an effort to raise awareness of elder abuse, Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County, is holding a special lawn sign campaign in June.

June 15th is  World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), launched by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.

In Massachusetts, 34,812 reports of elder abuse were made in the year 2020.  Nationally, up to five million older adults are abused every year, and the annual loss by victims of financial abuse is estimated to be at least $36.5 billion according to the National Council on Aging.  Seventy nine percent of the five million cases, go unreported. OCES’ call-to-action is for the community and organizations to lift up their voices – and those of older adults – and raise awareness about elder abuse. OCES encourages the community to make a difference and display a lawn sign for the month of June, 2021 to educate others about who to call to report elder abuse.

OCES is creating a number of lawn signs with various sayings to raise awareness, such as “You can make a difference” and “See Something Say Something – Report Elder Abuse 1-800-922-2275”.

To obtain a lawn sign, community members can contact the Brockton Council on Aging (508) 580-7811, Plymouth Center for Active Living (508) 830-4230 or OCES (508) 584-1561. Those who are picking up a sign will be provided with a designated pick-up time.

Special Banner Raising in Brockton

Join OCES and Mayor Sullivan on June 15th at noon at 144 Main Street in Brockton, MA as he raises the awareness banner in honor of older adults for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Community members can bring awareness to the campaign by displaying a lawn sign at a local business establishment or personal residence.

Sharing on Social Media

Anyone displaying a sign is encouraged to photograph themselves near the sign, or simply take a photo of the sign alone, and share it on OCES’ Facebook page @OCESMA. This further helps to raise awareness of this important issue of elder abuse. Use the hashtags #ElderAbuseAwareness #LiftingUpVoices #WEAAD when posting the pictures. Follow OCES on Facebook at @OCESMA for more information.

“Even in these challenging times, with social distancing, we can still work together to collaborate as a community and build awareness for this important issue,” said Teresa Kourtz, LSW, MSG, Protective Services Director at OCES.

For questions, email the OCES team at lmullin@ocesma.org or tkourtz@ocesma.org

Recognizing Elder Abuse

Elder abuse includes financial exploitation, emotional, physical, and sexual abuse or neglect. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Community Living, an estimated five million older adults are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation every year. One in 10 Americans age 60 and older have experienced some form of elder abuse. Common risk factors for elder abuse are social isolation, poor physical health and dementia.

OCES Protective Services Program staff works with older adults or their designees to prevent, eliminate or remedy situations involving emotional, physical or sexual abuse, neglect by a caregiver, financial exploitation and/or self–neglect. When there is a report made to the Elder Abuse Hotline, and the elder resides in our catchment area, OCES will receive the report and determine if further investigation is necessary by a Protective Services Worker.

If you have concerns, please contact your local Protective Services Agency. If you are looking to file a report on elder abuse, please contact the Centralized Intake Unit (Elder Abuse Hotline) at 1-800-922-2275.

A blooming partnership between Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield and Seaside Gardeners of Marshfield

May 24, 2021 //  by admin

The center island and community garden at the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield has taken root and begun to grow thanks to the efforts of the Seaside Gardeners of Marshfield and the Keystone Club.

Last year, the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield’s Keystone Club helped the Seaside Gardeners transfer plants from an island that they were converting to predominantly native plants, and beautify the Club’s center island. Seaside Gardeners shared their expertise, teaching Boys & Girls Club members about plants and providing tips for the Club’s community garden.

The Seaside Gardeners, the oldest garden club in the town, returned to the Boys & Girls Club in April to start seedlings and this month to work on the community garden with the kids. The Club’s gardening program involves youth from Kindergarten to grade 12, with the teens getting involved as staff, but learning from the adults. This summer, the community garden will be part of the Club’s summer camp program, and the children will help tend it. Along with that, a specialty cooking camp will be offered, which will use food grown in the garden.

“The children have been very enthusiastic about planting the seeds, watering them and watching them grow,” said Linda Hughes of Seaside Gardeners of Marshfield. “Many children express how much fun they are having and can’t wait to harvest their crops.”

“We are very excited about our partnership with the Seaside Gardeners and expanding on enrichment and STEM activities through our outdoor classroom gardens,” noted Jim Bunnell, CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield. The Club has applied for grants to expand the educational program and is currently seeking other funding opportunities.

About the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield

The Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield’s mission is to enable and inspire all young people to realize their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens as well as become tomorrow’s capable leaders. The Club provides programming opportunities in the Boys & Girls Club of America’s (BGCA) five core areas including leadership, education, health, arts, and fitness.  The Club serves families with children ranging in age from 5 to 18 years old, and provides critical services the community needs to support children and families over the short- and long-term. For more information, visit their website www.bgcmarshfield.org or call 781-834-2582.

Emerson Bearing Boston offers tips and a special online guide for enhancing bearing performance and service life

May 24, 2021 //  by admin

Choosing the proper bearing lubricant can help keep a facility’s machinery safe and operational. Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets, offers tips for proper bearing lubricant selection and a complimentary online “Bearing Maintenance Guide”.

Grease or lubricant selection can make a huge difference in the performance and life span of a piece of equipment or system. While the proper lubricant can ensure smooth and reliable performance, the wrong lubricant can result in frequent maintenance and service outages.

Emerson Bearing

For industrial applications, bearing lubricants come in three basic forms: oils and fluid lubricants; semi-solid or solid grease products (which are similar to fluid lubricants but also include a thickening agent); and dry lubricant powders and films for precise placement.

Below, Emerson Bearing offers five grease/lubricant selection tips:

– The machinery system and its operating conditions dictate which form and makeup of lubricant are the most suitable for use.

– Because lubricants need to be able to withstand heat and reduce friction, the most important factors to consider when selecting a lubricant are operating speeds, minimum and maximum system, and the viscosity of the lubricant in that range of operating temperatures.

– Different greases should not be combined unless the product directions explicitly allow for such mixtures. Instead, look for specialty greases and lubricants specifically designed for the conditions of the machinery and systems.

– Mixing two or more greases, with different base oils together, may result in a final lubricant product that loses many of the individual products’ unique benefits.

– It’s critical to match the service life of the grease to the service life of the bearing.

Special Guide for Keeping Bearings in Optimal Condition

The key to preventing bearing failure and maximizing bearing longevity is through proper maintenance. Learn more about lubrication and how to keep your system’s bearings in optimal condition and increase their operational lifespan through Emerson Bearing’s complimentary “Bearing Maintenance Guide”.

Emerson Bearing’s guide discusses the tips and steps to avoid preventable conditions and best practices to maximize bearing efficiency. It also addresses overall handling and storage guidelines, protection tips for each type of bearing, and additional resources to analyze first signs of bearing failure.

“We are dedicated to helping customers not only find the right bearing for their application, but the right lubrication to enhance bearing performance and extend service life,” said Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing. “Our online library contains the comprehensive information needed with regard to the selection, application and maintenance of bearings.”

To download Emerson Bearing’s “Bearing Maintenance Guide” from their website, visit https://www.emersonbearing.com/maintenance-failure-analysis/
