Eureka, CA resident wins Resort Maps’ Best Worst Trip contest.

WAITSFIELD, VERMONT…

The best thing about a bad vacation or trip is that at some point they have to end. Yet for Eureka, California resident Jennifer Morey, her tale of vacation woe from a family trip overseas in the 1980s earned her first prize in Resort Maps Best Worst Trip contest, a $100 American Express gift certificate.

“I never win anything, so having the best worst story is something,” said Morey. “The last half of the trip itself was such a nightmare, it’s great that I can laugh about it later and take my family out for a nice meal. Still, it would have been much nicer if things went differently.” 

Morey’s story involved a family trip to China and Thailand in 1986. While heeding advice not to drink the hotel water, Morey slipped up when she used the tap water to wet her toothbrush. What ensued was what the hotel doctor referred to as, “the worst case of dysentery he had seen.”

So while my family was taking in the sights in Thailand, including the Bridge on the River Kwai from the famous movie, I was stuck in the hotel room,” continued Morey. “None of the traditional stuff like Immodium or Pepto Bismol worked. Desperate, I took some Valium, which, remarkably, they sell over the counter in Thailand, or at least they did back then. It worked, but by then it was time to go home.”

“Jennifer’s story really hit home for the judges for a number of reasons,” said Peter Hans, president of Resort Maps Franchise, Inc. “Most notably, it’s an awful story to travel that far and have it spoiled by being sick. Second, that it’s a memorable story. Who knows if she would be talking about the family trip to Thailand and China nearly 25 years later if she had not had that experience. And that’s what makes it a worthy winner.”

The first runner-up in Resort Maps Best Worst Trip story belonged to Susan Klein, director of the Mad River Chamber of Commerce in Waitsfield, Vermont. Her story of snow in southern California and icy conditions in Maui earned her a one-year membership to the Arbor Day Foundation. As part of that member, she’ll have the option of receiving 10 free trees or donating those 10 trees to a damaged forest.

“We’d like to thank all the entrants who participated in the Best Worst Trip contest,” said Hans. “While it’s unfortunate only two people could ‘win’, hopefully those worst trips are a lot less painful in the rearview mirror.”

Old Colony Elder Services launches new “Sponsor A Senior” Program

Massachusetts ranks as the 39th highest state for seniors suffering from food insecurity. Currently, Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), a non-profit Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) located in Brockton, delivers more than 1,100 meals to seniors and individuals with disabilities each day. But, the need keeps on growing and OCES is appealing to the community for support with the launch of their “Sponsor A Senior” Program.

OCES provided 335,000 meals last year and anticipates a significant increased need during 2010. Funding constraints and the current economic climate make it difficult to keep up with demand. The Sponsor A Senior program is an ongoing fundraiser that will support OCES’ Nutrition Program and help to offset costs while ensuring that no senior goes hungry.

How it Works

Individuals and businesses may Sponsor A Senior by making a donations at sponsorship levels are as follows:

One week of meals – $35

One month of meals – $140

One year of meals – $1,680

Each donation made will benefit a local senior. All donations to the Sponsor A Senior program are tax-deductible. Checks or money orders made payable to Old Colony Elder Services can be mailed to:

South Shore Skin Center to Hold Open House at New Plymouth Location on June 2nd

Old Colony Elder Services Calls for Sponsors & Restaurant Vendors for Fundraising Event on June 26th

Old Colony Elder Services, (OCES), serving elders, their families and caregivers in 23 towns in Southeastern Massachusetts, is holding their first annual “Cooking for a Cause” fundraising event to support the Nutrition Program on June 26th. Sponsors and restaurant vendors are needed. This event is open to the public.

The number of seniors throughout the area in need of meals is growing. OCES supports these seniors by providing healthy meals to them every day through the Nutrition Program’s congregate meal sites and Meals on Wheels. OCES has developed the “Cooking for a Cause” fundraiser to support and maintain the Nutrition program.

“Cooking for a Cause” is a family-friendly event that will offer something for everyone. Attendees will enjoy samples of cuisine from restaurants throughout Southeastern Mass., entertainment by the Baha Brothers, face painting for children as well as great raffles. The event will be held from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the Middleboro Council on Aging located at 558 Plymouth Street in Middleboro.

OCES is looking to recruit area restaurants. Several have already signed up including: Burrito Wraps of Brockton, RooBar in Plymouth, Veronica’s Treats of Middleboro, Mike’s House of Pizza in Hanson, Lindley Food Service of Connecticut (the caterer for Meals on Wheels), BJ’s Wholesale of Stoughton, Hideaway Restaurant in Middleboro and the Middleboro Council on Aging.

Sponsors are also needed. Sponsorship levels vary from the “Bronze Baker” $500 commitment to the “Platinum Platter” $5,000 commitment. Event program advertisements are also available. Sponsors who RSVP immediately will be included on all marketing materials.

“Because of increasing costs and budget cuts, OCES cannot keep up with the demand of the growing senior population and increasing needs. The competition for grants is tough and we needed to find a way to raise the additional funds necessary to keep the Nutrition Program running. The number of seniors who rely on Meals on the Wheels and the congregate meal sites is growing exponentially and it’s imperative that we have an initiative in place so no senior goes hungry,” explained Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of OCES.

Crescent Ridge Dairy Wins “Green Packy” Award

Crescent Ridge Dairy, providers of wholesome, small batch milk and quality provisions to more than 70 Boston-area communities via home delivery service and Whole Foods Markets, has been awarded the “Green Packy” award.

The Green Packy award, otherwise known as the Responsible Packaging Award, was presented to Crescent Ridge by Sustainable Bizness Practices for their commitment to using reusable, refillable, and returnable-to-the-store glass beverage (quart and 1/2 gallon size) bottles. Crescent Ridge was recognized with this coveted award for their service to 16 Whole Foods Markets in MA and RI.

The Green Packy awards were sponsored by Whole Foods Markets, Whole Food Markets Green Mission, United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) and the Food Trade Sustainability Leadership Association (FTSLA). According to Sustainable Bizness, the Green Packy awards are based on the Responsible Packaging Guidelines for the Organic Industry. It has been a collaboration headed by Whole Foods Markets Green Mission’s Responsible Packaging Forum at Natural Products Expos West and East over the past four years.

Recipients of the award must meet three key requirements in responsible packaging: ecological principles; transparency of content and process and extended product responsibility. Crescent Ridge was among only 19 others nationwide receiving a Green Packy award at Natural Products Expo West held at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

To help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, DirectBuy of DuPage County hosted two Green Energy Seminars for its members. And while attendees learned how to run their homes more efficiently and take advantage of government appliance rebates, Club Owner Jeremy Vest felt a grander green gesture was in order. To that end, he donated $100 to the Arbor Day Foundation’s Replanting Our National Forests program.

In cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, the Arbor Day Foundation is planting new trees in U.S. forests damaged by natural and other catastrophes (e.g. California wildfires). For every $1 donated, one tree will be planted in these damaged forests. DirectBuy of DuPage County’s contribution represents 100 new trees to be planted in one of these damaged forests.

“We applaud our members’ efforts to educate themselves on how they can run their homes in a more energy-efficient manner and what better way to recognize greener living than planting a tree,” said Vest.
