Plymouth road race

Plymouth Turkey Trot turns up the heat on battle for best Thanksgiving Day road race in America’s hometown

September 4, 2012 //  by admin

Plymouth Turkey Trot logoPLYMOUTH, MA…

When you think of Thanksgiving Day rivalries, it’s usually a discussion about high school football. In Plymouth, Mass, the birthplace of Thanksgiving Day tradition, a new rivalry has begun with the announcement of the Plymouth Turkey Trot, a 4.77 mile run on Thanksgiving morning. The new race represents the fourth road race that takes within Thanksgiving week in the town where the Thanksgiving holiday began.

In addition to the new Plymouth Turkey Trot, three other road races will take place in Plymouth. Those include the Plymouth Turkey Trot’s sister race, the third annual Thanksgiving Day Pilgrim 5k on Thanksgiving morning, the Turkey Chase for Charity and America’s Hometown’s Thanksgiving Race the latter two taking place during the weekend prior to Thanksgiving.

“I don’t know of any city or town in the country that has more Thanksgiving road races than the town of Plymouth, which is probably fitting considering the origins of the holiday,” said Steve Dubin, spokesperson for the Plymouth Turkey Trot and Thanksgiving Day 5k, as well as the Old Sandwich Road Race, which is held in June. “While you certainly don’t wish ill will towards fellow local road races, there is a competition to put on the race that’s going to attract the most local runners as well as folks looking for a getaway over the holidays.”

The Plymouth Turkey Trot starts at Memorial Park on the Waterfront at Plymouth Rock at 7:30am. The 4.77 mile course offers scenic views of the Plymouth’s picturesque oceanfront, and passes several historical sites including Plymouth Rock, Burial Hill and The Mayflower. The cost to register is $20 before November 1. Prizes will be awarded to men’s and women’s winners in several age groups.

“The Turkey Trot gives runners who might have some traveling to do for Thanksgiving an early start so they can get their run in and then head on  over to Grandma’s house or wherever they’re going for a guilt-free Thanksgiving-Day dinner,” said Dubin.

For complete information, on the Plymouth Turkey Trot, visit www.plymouthturkeytrot.com.

The third annual Thanksgiving Day Pilgrim 5k kicks off from the Village Racquet and Fitness Center, at Pine Hills, 30 Gold Drive, Plymouth at 9:30 a.m. rain or shine on Thanksgiving morning. The course includes the oldest road in America, Old Sandwich Road. This race site was the original trail used by Pilgrims and Native Americans in the 1600’s as they traveled from Plymouth to Sandwich, Mass. Cost is $20 online until November 1.

All participants will receive a custom finishers’ medal.  T-Shirts, designed by professional graphic artists, will be given to all 1,000 runners.

For complete information visit http://thanksgivingdaypilgrim5k.yolasite.com.

If you or your company is interested in sponsoring either the Plymouth Turkey Trot or the Thanksgiving Day Turkey 5k, please contact Steve Dubin at 781-582-1061 or sdubin@prworkzone.com.

Run for Faith makes a “splash” in Year Two—without the hurricane

August 21, 2012 //  by admin

Nearly 300 people participated in the second annual Run for Faith 4-Miler on August 19. The race, which is run to help raise funds for local charities and ovarian cancer research, is run in the memory of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi. Mrs. Romboldi lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2010. PLYMOUTH, MA…

When your first effort at a road race coincides with the beginning of a hurricane as it did last year for the first Run for Faith, you say more than a few prayers for good weather for year two. For the organizers and participants, those prayers were answered and then some with a sunny day and comfortable running temperatures, as nearly 300 participated in the second annual Run for Faith 4-miler.

“Mom was certainly looking down on us this year, as we could not have asked for a better day,” said Matthew Romboldi, Run for Faith race director and son of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi. Mrs. Romboldi, in whose memory the race is held, died from ovarian cancer in 2010. “We are delighted by the turnout and, of course, the weather and we saw some pretty good times by our winners.”

Brian McCarthy of Plymouth won the Men’s’ Division with a time of 25:10. Christina Hall, also of Plymouth, was the top female runner with a time of 27:30. Melissa Mearer of Pocasset won the first-ever Stroller Division with a time of 42:40.

“We have tried to make the Run for Faith very family-oriented because that’s what Marcy was all about—family,” said Nicole Romboldi, the wife of Matthew Romboldi. “Having the Stroller Division made this an extra special event and we hope to grow the Stroller Division even more for next year.”

Those who took part in the first-ever Stroller Division include:

  • Daniel Shea, Scituate, MA
  • Anna Shea, Scituate, MA
  • Litza Romboldi, Plymouth, MA
  • Nanci Dewey, Plymouth, MA
  • Katy Valentine, Plymouth, MA
  • Rusty Romboldi, Plymouth, MA
  • Vincenza Amara, Plymouth, MA
  • Priscilla Pinto, Plymouth, MA
  • Sara Denocourt, Plymouth, MA
  • Kim Carreira, Plymouth, MA
  • Tracey Murphy, Plymouth, MA

The Run for Faith is organized by Run for Faith, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the proceeds from the race help raise money for several Plymouth non-profits and charitable organizations. The first Run for Faith raised enough for a $5,000 donation to Dana Farber’s  Yaw key Center for Cancer Care and ovarian cancer research. The Run for Faith also contributed two $2500 scholarships for two Plymouth high school students: Graham Allen from Plymouth South High School and Nathan Fuller from Plymouth North High School.

“The excellent turnout means we can make even more of an impact with our donations, both in scholarships and donations to local charities and ovarian cancer research,” said Romboldi. “We’d like to thank all those who ran and our sponsors for making this a successful event.”

The 2012 Run for Faith was sponsored by a number of local businesses, including Nolan Schelle Insurance, Marty’s GMC, Liddell Brothers Traffic Safety Systems, Cape Auto, 99.1 WPLM, Mayflower Food & Spirits, Powderhorn Press, Pilgrim Belle Harbor Cruises, Plimouth Plantation, Girls on the Go, Newfield House, Stevens the Florist, Lee Sirricco Landscaping, Cold Spring Club, Unity Club, and Mama Mia’s, and Ziggy’s Ice Cream.

Individuals or businesses looking to make a donation to this year’s Run for Faith, or sponsor next year’s Run for Faith, can e-mail info@runforfaithplymouth.org or call 508-400-0751. For complete information on the Run for Faith, visit www.runforfaithplymouth.org.

Strollin’, strollin’ strollin’…Second annual Run for Faith 4-mile run introduces Stroller Division.

August 3, 2012 //  by admin

Run for Faith Stroller DivisionPLYMOUTH, MA…

For many, it’s difficult to consider a four-mile run a “stroll”. Yet for the many parents who are runners with infants and toddlers, running with a stroller is second nature. Recognizing this large demographic of runners, The Run for Faith is introducing a Stroller Division for its second annual race, taking place on Sunday, August 19 at 9am at historic Plimouth Plantation.

“As the daughter of a Methodist minister from the Midwest, my mother was all about family and she would absolutely love the idea of fathers and mothers pushing their children in a race devoted to her memory,” said Matthew Romboldi, Run for Faith race director and son of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi. Mrs. Romboldi, in whose memory the race is held, died from ovarian cancer in 2010.

For safety reasons, Stroller Division runners will start behind other runners. Prizes will be awarded to both male and female winners (kids, too).

“When you run and you’re pushing a child in front of you, there’s a certain empowerment and level of strength that you learn to appreciate. It’s one thing to carry yourself to the limit, but its even more special and note worthy to push someone else in front of you,” said Nicole Hayes, wife of Matthew Romboldi and mother to a two-year-old son, Charlie. “I’ve seen people at many races push people in wheel chairs and I always make sure to congratulate them on their accomplishments. As a mother who runs frequently with a running stroller, I think it’s important to have a special category where these runners are recognized and commended for their efforts.”

To participate in the Stroller Division, you must register on Active.com. You can link to the site from the Run for Faith website, http://www.runforfaithplymouth.org. Registration is $25 and you must check the box for Stroller Division if you will be running with your child and a carriage.

The Run for Faith is organized by Run for Faith, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and the proceeds from the race help raise money for several Plymouth non-profits and charitable organizations. The first Run for Faith raised enough for a $5,000 donation to Dana Farber’s  Yawkey Center for Cancer Care and ovarian cancer research. The Run for Faith also contributed two $2500 scholarships for two Plymouth high school students: Graham Allen from Plymouth South High School and Nathan Fuller from Plymouth North High School.

The 2012 Run for Faith has attracted a number of local sponsors, including Nolan Schelle Insurance, Marty’s GMC, Liddell Brothers Traffic Safety Systems, 99.1 WPLM, Powderhorn Press, Plimoth Plantation, Girls on the Go, Newfield House, Mayflower Food and Spirits, Cold Spring Club, Unity Club, and Mama Mia’s.

Charity run/walk makes a run for new sponsors. Second annual Run for Faith 4-mile run welcomes new sponsors

July 31, 2012 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

The Run for Faith recently welcomed several Plymouth businesses as corporate sponsors for the second-year event, which will take place on Sunday, August 19 at 9am at historic Plimouth Plantation.  Those sponsors include Newfield House, Mayflower Food and Spirits, Cold Spring Club, Unity Club, and Mama Mia’s.

“As a girl from the Midwest and the daughter of a Methodist minister, my mother’s faith was a huge part of who she was—even though she preferred to be called Marcy over her given name of Faith,” said Matthew Romboldi, Run for Faith race director and son of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi, for whom the race is held. “We certainly appreciate the faith our sponsors have shown in us, especially those supporting the Run for Faith for a second year and what happened with the weather last year.”

Last year’s took place the morning of Hurricane Irene. The race went off as scheduled with all runners completing the course just before the bad weather started. Adds Romboldi, “I think Mom was watching over us, doing her part to make sure we got the race in. Let’s hope we don’t need that kind of divine intervention this year.”

In addition to the four-mile course that starts at Plimouth Plantation, the Run for Faith will include a special Stroller division. Other family-friendly features include a jumpy house at the end of the race and free sno-cones.

The Run for Faith is organized by Run for Faith, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to commemorate the special life of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi.  Last year’s race helped raise money for several Plymouth non-profits and charitable organizations, including a $5,000 donation to the Yawkey Center for Cancer Care and ovarian cancer research. The Run for Faith also contributed two $2500 scholarships for two Plymouth high school students: Graham Allen from Plymouth South High School and Nathan Fuller from Plymouth North High School.

Besides the latest additions, the second annual Run for Faith is being sponsored by a number of other Plymouth businesses, including: Nolan Schelle Insurance, Marty’s GMC, Liddell Brothers Traffic Safety Systems, 99.1 WPLM, Powderhorn Press, Plimoth Plantation and Girls on the Go.

“We’re grateful for the tremendous support for Run for Faith so far. Like any fundraising effort, there’s always room for additional sponsors and participants,” added Romboldi. “This is a Plymouth race supporting Plymouth causes and we welcome the support of area businesses.”

Businesses looking to sponsor the second annual Run for Faith can e-mail  info@runforfaithplymouth.org or call 508-400-0751.

Volunteers needed for 2nd annual Run for Faith 4-miler, August 19

July 12, 2012 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

In its first year, the Run for Faith took place right before and during Hurricane Irene. Nearly 100 runners and volunteers braved the storm for a successful first year. In gearing up its second run, set for Sunday, August 19 at 9am, Run for Faith, Inc., the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that organizes the race, is looking for volunteers to help before, during and after the race—hopefully without too much interference from Mother Nature.

“It was beyond description the effort our volunteers put in last year, particularly in the face of what became a hurricane,” said Matthew Romboldi, race organizer and son of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi, for whom the race is dedicated. “We need help in all areas of this year’s run. Whether you’re a runner, related to a runner, or just want to be part of a fun event that helps raise money for local charities and an exceptional facility— Dana Farber’s Yawkey Center for Cancer Care—then we can sure use your help.”

Volunteers are needed to man registration tables, water stations and other day-of-race functions. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Matthew Romboldi at 508-400-0751 or info@runforfaithplymouth.org.

Run like the wind. Plymouth, MA 4-mile, Run for Faith, set for second run on Sun., August 19—minus hurricane?

June 18, 2012 //  by admin

Last year's Run for Faith
Will there be a hurricane for this year's Run for Faith?

PLYMOUTH, MA…
Most new road races expect a few bumps in the proverbial road in the first year. For the Run for Faith, a four-mile race through historic Plymouth, Massachusetts, that bump was Hurricane Irene. For its second run, set for Sunday, August 19, Run for Faith organizers are hoping for nothing more than a little sea breeze, just to keep runners cool on the run through historic Plymouth, MA.

“We had a surprisingly good turnout in spite of the impending weather,” said Matthew Romboldi, Run for Faith organizer and one of the children for whom the race is dedicated, the late Faith Romboldi. “For this year, we’re hoping for a lot nicer weather, a lot more runners, and to raise more monies for the causes that were dear to my mother.”

Last year’s Run for Faith resulted in two $2500 scholarships to students graduating from Plymouth North and Plymouth South in 2012. The Run for Faith also contributed $5000 to Dana Farber’s Yawkey Center for Cancer Care, a cause near and dear to Mrs. Romboldi, who lost her battle to ovarian cancer in 2010.

The second annual Run for Faith 4Miler, which is a a gold member in the Bayside Runner Racing Series, is set for Sunday, August 19 at 9 a.m. at historic Plimoth Plantation. Entry fee is $25 – which will once again go to scholarships for Plymouth high school students, Dana Farber and other Plymouth charities and non-profits.

The 4 mile race loop captures spectacular views of Cape Cod Bay, the Eel River and scenic horse farms. The course features rolling hills and unmatched history.  Water stations will available and the event will be professionally timed by Spitler Racing Systems.  There will also be a Stroller Division, so runners can run with their young children.

Prizes will go to top finishers, male and female, and awards will be given to top finishers for various age groups. Post-race “light refreshments” will include bananas, oranges, bagels, muffins and scones.  To amuse younger family members, a jumpy house will be available. A number of vendors will be on hand to sell their wares before and after the race.

The Run for Faith is organized by Run for Faith, Inc., which is 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created to commemorate the special life of Faith “Marcy” Romboldi who gave so much of herself to both individuals and the community.

Faith, or “Marcy” as she was known by her friends and family, was a teacher, member of the Red Hat’s Society, Sweet Adeline’s, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008. Marcy’s ability to fight this vicious disease with incessant might and unsurpassed grace will never be forgotten and surely serves as inspiration to those who were close. Mostly, Marcy will be remembered for her acts of kindness, generosity and thoughtfulness. Many will remember her for her two best accessories- a lovely hat and a radiant smile!
Corporate sponsors include Nolan Schelle Insurance, Marty’s GMC, Liddell Brothers Traffic Safety Systems, 99.1 WPLM, Powderhorn Press, Plimoth Plantation, Girls on the Go.

A third full of firsts. Kenyan Moninda Marube wins Old Sandwich Road Race (OSRR) Half Marathon.

June 5, 2012 //  by admin

Moninda Marube wins Old Sandwich Road Race
2012 Old Sandwich Road Race Half Marathon winner Moninda Marube with Race Director Craig Valentine Brenner

PLYMOUTH, MA…

One of the draws of the Old Sandwich Road Race (OSRR) is the history of and along the course. Now in its third year, the race itself is making some history as Kenyan Moninda Marube won the Men’s Half Marathon in course record time of 1:08:13. In the process, he collected the largest winner’s purse in the history of the race, a winner-take-all $3,000.

“It may have been a cold and damp day, but Moninda torched the course,” said Steven V. Dubin, OSRR communications director. “Besides setting the course record, Moninda brought an electricity to the event that inspired the other runners.”

Maxwell Basset of New Hampshire was one of those runners. The 16-year-old finished first in the OSRR 10k, becoming the youngest winner in the history of the race. In fact, the top five finishers in the 10k were all 18 years of age or younger, the youngest being Collyn Brenner, a Plymouth resident and the 14-year-old son of OSRR Race Director Craig Valentine Brenner.

“I could not be more proud of my son for his efforts,” said Brenner. “The day before the race, we took Moninda for a drive of the course. My son’s a very good runner but I have no doubt that being around one of the elite Kenyan runners pushed him just a little more.”

The OSRR winners were as follows:

Half Marathon:

  • Men’s – Moninda Marube, 1:08:13
  • Women’s – Kailin Collins, 1:20:21

Marube received $3,000 for his first overall finish. Collins received $1500. All Half Marathon participants received finisher medals.

10k:

  • Men’s – Maxwell Basset, 36:10
  • Women’s – Alison Foley, 47:14

5K:

  • Men’s – Andrew Sorensen, 19:30
  • Women’s – Emily Manion, 22:29

While many local residents participate in the OSRR, the race continues to draw runners from other parts of the country and world. Based on Marube’s post-race comments, those numbers are likely to increase for the 2013 OSRR.

“Moninda said he was going to return next year and bring some of his friends from Kenya,” said Brenner.

Originally a trail used by the Wampanoag Native American tribe, Old Sandwich Road later became the nation’s first true public road and a stagecoach route to ferry passengers and mail back and forth between the Massachusetts towns of Plymouth and Sandwich. Today, the road remains pretty much as the Pilgrims left it–a wide, scenic, dirt road bordered by beautiful tall pine trees and towering oaks. It offers perfect views for runners and a dirt road surface that’s far kinder to the body than asphalt or cement.

The Old Sandwich Road Race includes two days of races. Saturday, June 2, featured the Kids Classic and the OSRR 5k. Sunday’s main events included the OSRR Half Marathon, which took place on Old Sandwich Road, and the OSRR 10k, beginning at Plimouth Plantation. All races ended at Plymouth South High School.

A portion of the profits from the Old Sandwich Road Race go to The Home for Little Wanderer’s Baird Center School in Plymouth. The Baird Center School is a year-round residential and day school treatment program for youth aged 10-18 with a wide range of emotional, behavioral, educational and psychiatric issues.

If you would like more information on the Old Sandwich Road Race, please visit  www.oldsandwichroadrace.com. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring next year’s race, please contact Steven V. Dubin, (781) 582-1061 or info@oldsandwichroadrace.com.

You can visit the Old Sandwich Road Race Web site at http://www.oldsandwichroadrace.com. Selected by Runner’s World, as “one of the five races not to miss in 2010”, The Old Sandwich Road Race also has pages on Facebook and Twitter.

Kenyan runner goes the distance to run in third annual Old Sandwich Road Race, June 2 and 3, 2012.

May 31, 2012 //  by admin

Moninda Marube will participate in this Sunday's Old Sandwich Road Race

PLYMOUTH, MA…

In its short history, the Old Sandwich Road Race has drawn participants from  all around the United States and four foreign countries. With the recent entry of elite runner Kenyan Moninda Marube to the Half Marathon—taking place on Sunday, June 3–the third annual race has its first participant from the continent of Africa.
“The Kenyans are to distance running what the New York Yankees are to baseball, what the Boston Celtics are to basketball—they are a running dynasty,” Steven V. Dubin, Old Sandwich Road Race communications director.  “Moninda’s participation in this race shows you how far the Old Sandwich Road Race has come in just a few years.”
Marube has participated in more than a dozen marathons and half-marathons in the U.S. since 2010. That included winning the 2010 Little Rock Marathon, as well as participating in several prestigious running events, such as the Santa Barbara International Marathon, the MetroPCS Dallas White Rock Marathon, and the Waddell and Reed Kansas City Marathon.
“With his recent winning times, Moninda has the potential to run our course in about an hour and 10 minutes. That would be by far the fastest time for a half marathon in Plymouth or anywhere else south of Boston.” said OSRR Race Director Craig Valentine Brenner.  “It seems like this year’s race, with the location being on historic Old Sandwich Road itself, we’re about to make history once again. Here come the Kenyans.”
The 2012 Old Sandwich Road Race will take place over the course of two days, Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3. The Saturday race will feature the Kids Classic and the OSRR 5k. Sunday’s main events include the OSRR Half Marathon, which takes place on Old Sandwich Road, and the OSRR 10k, beginning at Plimouth Plantation. All races end at Plymouth South High School.
Improvements for the 2012 OSRR include a $3,000 winner-take-all purse for the half marathon winner and finisher’s medals for all half marathon participants. Other improvements include:
• Medals for all half-marathon finishers.

Run like the wind. Nearly 100-plus runners/walkers/volunteers brave Irene to participate in Run for Faith 4Mile Memorial Run.

September 6, 2011 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

During her life, Faith “Marcy” Romboldi was known for her indomitable spirit, particularly when it came to those she loved and causes she cared about. That spirit was evident in the 100-plus participants—runners, walkers and volunteers alike- who endured Tropical Storm Irene to participate in the first annual Run for Faith, a four-mile run held in memory of Mrs. Romboldi on Sunday, August 28.

“Sure, we would have loved to have had a perfect day with ideal weather conditions for the first year,” said Matthew Romboldi, Faith’s son and one of the run’s organizers. “In many ways, having it on a day like this makes it even more memorable. Mom certainly would have been one of the first ones to volunteer, even knowing what the weather forecast was going to be.”

Faith, or “Marcy” as she was known by her friends and family, was a teacher, member of the Red Hat’s Society, Sweet Adeline’s, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2008 and passed away 2010. The Run for Faith was set up to commemorate Faith Romboldi’s life and to raise money for causes near and dear to her heart: Plymouth Public Library, Children’s Department, Plymouth Elementary Schools, music scholarship programs and prevention programs for ovarian cancer. Between sponsorships and entry fees, the Run for Faith raised $22,000 in its first year.

The four-mile race loop started at Plimouth Plantation and followed a challenging course with scenic views, ending back at the Plantation. Plymouth resident Drew Sorenson was the first runner to cross the finish line, completing the run in 27 minutes, 55 seconds. Heidi Sanders, also of Plymouth, was the first female finisher. Her time was 31 minutes, 28 seconds.

“The runners and walkers are absolutely to be commended for the effort they put forth under some adverse weather conditions to help make this first year race a success and to raise funds for causes that will benefit the Plymouth community,” said Craig Valentine Brenner, who served as a volunteer consultant for the first year run. Brenner is the race director of another fairly new Plymouth road race, the Old Sandwich Road Race.

Added volunteer Steve Dubin, “There was a real spirit of camaraderie among the volunteers and runners that we weren’t going to let the storm get in the way of the run no matter what. And the show went on and it’s something that those who took part in it will never forget.”

“There are so many people to thank for helping make this race a success. We’re especially grateful to all the volunteers and the folks at Plimouth Plantation. It would have been very easy for them to look at the weather forecast and postpone, but they stood by us and we appreciate that,” said Romboldi. “We’re especially thankful to folks like Craig Brenner, Adam Stuhlfaut of Bayside Runner, Ann Marie Winchester of the Run for the Rock, Erin Brenton Woods from Girls on the Go and all the sponsors who wanted to be a part of this first year run.”

Corporate sponsors include Marty’s GMC, Delaney & Muncey, P.C.; Plimoth Plantation; Newfield House, Unity Club, Mama Mia’s, Nolan Schelle Insurance; Mayflower Bank; Left Shore Designs; Dunlap Propane; Pilgrim Belle; Cape Cod Media Center; Pilgrim Custom Countertops; Baker’s Music and Video; and 99.1 WPLM-FM.
