Veteran presence helps The Alares Group, a Green Beret-led green design-build construction firm, win $7 million contract to install geothermal heating system at Reno VA Medical Center.

June 30, 2011 //  by admin

QUINCY, MA AND RENO, NV…

As a former Green Beret and the owner of the Alares Group, a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), Don Maggioli has complete understanding of the importance of the medical facilities that care for U.S. veterans. That’s why his company’s recent win of a $7 million job to install a direct-use geothermal heating system at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Reno, Nevada is particularly gratifying.

The new heating system will help heat the campus facility, located at 1000 Locust Street in Reno, and meet its mandated energy goals; specific laws and executive orders require federal agencies like the Department of Veteran Affairs to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency through the use of alternative fuels and renewable sources. Once installed, the geothermal heating system can achieve energy savings of up to 2,146,200 Therms/year or 21.462 x 1010 Btu/year.  That’s roughly one quarter of the cost presently required to heat the facility.

“We’re extremely excited about winning the Reno VA project for any number of reasons,” said Maggioli. “Besides the obvious benefits to our firm, it’s particularly rewarding since the project will help improve the energy efficiency of a facility that treats so many fellow veterans. That the new system will dramatically reduce greenhouse emissions and benefit the local environment makes this project a win-win for all involved.”

The new geothermal heating system will take advantage of the nearby Moana Hot Springs, located beneath the Reno VA Medical Center. The project involves construction of a utility trench and the installation of wells and geothermal heat exchange equipment on the Medical Center’s campus.

“We have been working in Nevada for the last couple of years working with the Reno VA and to be able to continue that association on a project that’s our specialty– installing geothermal systems—is both rewarding and exciting,” said Maggioli.

The Alares Group recently won an energy award from the Association of Energy Engineers for the design and installation of a geothermal heating and cooling system for the Connecticut Air National Guard.  The Alares Group is also one of the few firms with Certified Geothermal Installers/Designers and Environmental Engineers in the northeast.

Construction of the Reno project began in April and is slated to be completed by July 2012.

The Alares Group is located at 248 Copeland Street, Quincy, Massachusetts  02169, and can be reached at (617) 995-4397 or info@alaresenvironmental.com. For more information, visit their website www.AlaresLLC.com.
