Boston Podiatrist Offers Tips to Keep Feet in Tip-Top Shape During the Holiday Season

December 3, 2012 //  by admin

‘Tis the season for sky high, closed-toe stilettos, wedges and glitzy strap sandals. But how do you ensure foot comfort and health while donning fashionable footwear for the holidays?

Boston Common Podiatry, led by established Boston podiatrist and board certified foot surgeon Jordana Szpiro, D.P.M., F.A.C.F.A.S., offers six key tips for keeping your feet in tip-top shape during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

If you suffer from:

Hammertoes – Be sure that if you’re wearing closed-toe shoes and that they are the correct size and have adequate room in the toe box.

Ingrown toenails – Avoid pointy toed shoes or shoes that are too small.

Flat feet or fallen arches – It’s best to find shoes with good arch support. Even in high heels, certain shoes have more contoured arches than others.

Plantar fasciitis – Contrary to popular belief, flat shoes aren’t the best solution for all foot problems. Heels will actually feel better than flatter shoes, but be sure to stretch your calf and behind the ankle well before bed. If you’re having pain in the bottom of the heels, avoid any type of kitten heel.

Ankle weakness or previous foot/ankle injury – Heels make your ankles very vulnerable to inversion injuries and sprains, so it’s best to wear something with an ankle strap and thicker heel. Wedges can be particularly destabilizing.

Additionally, avoid frostbite if you are out in open sandals by wearing tights or nylons if possible. Take transportation when possible, even if you’re not travelling a great distance and have a pair of socks handy for when in transit. If you think you may have suffered prolonged exposure, soak in warm, not hot water before bed and wear warm socks to bed.

According to Dr. Szpiro, “You can still wear the hottest styles, but choose wisely. If you have ongoing foot issues, these recommendations should be taken into consideration to ensure comfort and avoid further aggravation of the foot condition.”

About Boston Common Podiatry

Emerson Bearing Boston Specializes in Bearings for Extreme Applications

September 24, 2012 //  by admin

Failed bearing
Got a dirty environment? Emerson Bearing Boston provides the bearings necessary for operation in extreme applications.

Catering to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets around the globe, Emerson Bearing Boston provides bearings that operate in unique performance conditions such as dirty and biohazardous environments; extremely hot/cold temperatures and environments where chemicals, radiation, speed/velocity and size play a major role.

“A dry dirty environment is typically an environment that generates some kind of dust. A wet dirty environment often involves water or a chemical that emulsifies with the oil (bearing lubricant), which causes the bearing to fail. To give you an example, worn seals on linear bearings that are used in a dirty environment will enable contamination. Even with the best design, lubrication and installation, bearing failure will occur if the operating environment is not taken into consideration,” explained Steve Katz, the company’s president.

Katz outlines the primary environmental influences below:

-Dust and dirt, which can aggressively contaminate a bearing. Great care should be given to use proper sealing techniques.

-Aggressive media or water. Once again, sealing is primary. The use of specialty type seals is recommended such as Pump Mechanical or Labyrinth style seals that do not score the shaft.

-External heat. The ambient operating temperature mandates many choices in Radial Internal Clearance, high temperature lubricants, intermittent or continuous running and others, which affect bearing life.

-Current passage or electrolytic corrosion. If current is allowed to flow through the rolling elements, sparks can create pitting or fluting on the bearing surfaces. This should be corrected by creating a bypass circuit for the current or through the use of insulation on or within the bearing. This should be an inherent design consideration in applications such as Wind Turbines and all power generating equipment.

Katz continued, “Our team of bearing experts can advise customers on the right solution for bearings running in extreme applications.”

Action Bearing Helps Harness the Wind with Dedicated Wind Power Division

August 22, 2011 //  by admin

Rick Piracini
Action Bearing, providers of bearings and related products to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets throughout New England, has announced a dedicated Wind Power Generation Division to accommodate the unique bearing requirements of the wind turbine market.

Rick Piracini, Marketing Specialist and industry expert at Action Bearing, will oversee the Wind Power Generation division, assisting clients in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of all of the various types of bearings needed for wind turbines.

Wind turbines often stand 250 feet in the air and are mechanical and technical marvels that rely on bearings, which are the key components of the gearbox, generator and blade.

Action Bearing provides the necessary roller bearings, deep groove ball bearings and four point contact bearings for gearboxes.

The generator in the nacelle of a wind turbine is subjected to significantly greater vibration loads, so bearing size, design and lubrication all play a critical role. The bearing arrangement of a generator generally contains a combination of deep groove ball bearings or cylindrical roller bearings, all of which are available through Action Bearing. Due to the risk of serious damage such as melt craters and false brinelling, Action Bearing advises using current insulated bearings in many applications.

It is critical that the turbines be aligned optimally to the wind. This is controlled by blade bearings (pitch bearings), Yaw bearing and blade adjustment which requires sealed spherical bushings that have corrosion protection which are all available through Action Bearing.

Action’s 24/7 service and vast inventory are critical to the operations of wind power clients. For more information or to speak with Rick Piracini of Action Bearing, call 1-866-995-8765 or email rickp@Actionbearing.com.

Boston’s Action Bearing Announces Dedicated Power Generation Division

April 23, 2011 //  by admin

Action Bearing, a Boston-based bearing company catering to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets throughout New England, has announced a Power Generation Division dedicated to accommodating the unique bearing and related product needs of utilities.

Action Bearing’s Power Generation clients include Coal and Gas fired Electric utilities. Rick Piracini, Marketing Specialist and industry expert at Action Bearing, oversees this new division and assists clients in determining which bearing technologies would be most suitable by taking into consideration the specifications, recommendations, maintenance strategies, fatigue life and wear resistance of the bearing in relation to the application.

Power generation requires uninterrupted bearing service. Action’s 24/7 service and inventory are critical to the operations of utility clients. The ball and roller bearings for the pumps, compressors, electric motors and drives must meet critical internal clearances, cage designs and Abec precision class. Action’s inventory includes Split Bearing Pillow Blocks, Cylindrical Roller Bearings, Ball Bearings, Type E Pillow Blocks, M2000 Pillow Blocks, Oil Seals and Isolator Seals, Spherical Roller Bearings, Cylindrical Roller Bearings and Spherical Bushings.

Pillow Block bearings have to be a design that allows for easy and prompt replacement. The company offers a special solution to utilities – the Craft Split Roller block which allows for rapid replacement, and ultimately saves on downtime and costs. Action Bearing also recommends high end lubricants such as Kluber or Lubriplate for critical locations to better match lubricant service life to bearing B 10 life ratings. Both Inch and Metric shaft variations are available for next day delivery.

Failure Analysis

As part of their customer care, Action Bearing’s industry experts provide clients with the unique service of “Bearing Failure Analysis” which helps them determine the cause of bearing failure so that they may prevent future failure and predict reliability. Or, if clients desire to do so, they can utilize the Bearing Failure Analysis program within the Technical Toolbox on the Action Bearing website.

To contact Rick Piracini in the Power Generation division directly, call 1-866-995-8765 or email rickp@Actionbearing.com.
