Wills and trusts aren’t just for celebrities. Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers encourages dialogue for young families.

December 5, 2008 //  by admin

DATELINE:  BOSTON, MA…
We’ve all heard about estate planning gone bad. The late James Brown, “the godfather of soul,” left family members singing the blues by not updating his will to include a young son and a new wife; or the late Leona Hemsley whose “mission statement” for her multi-billion dollar trust literally left everything to the dogs.

Does this mean that wills and trusts are really meant to be just for the rich and famous? Nothing could be further from the truth according to Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers, P.C. of Boston, which has sponsored interactive discussions with young families to help them learn more about current estate planning strategies.

Tarlow, Breed, Hart & Rodgers attorney Perry Ganz, who is himself a dad with young children, notes that having a child is usually the impetus for young families to start considering issues that had never before crossed their mind.

In addition to the needs of a new baby, young families ponder questions that often keep them up at night as well, such as:
●    What happens if I die without a will?
●    Who will be the guardian of my children?
●    How can I protect my children’s inheritance?
●    Who will make medical decisions for me if I can’t make my own?
●    How do I minimize estate taxes?
●     How much life insurance do I need?

“Having a solid estate plan addresses many of these questions,” explains Ganz. “It provides a roadmap to go forward if the unthinkable happens and a family’s life is altered by death or disability. Estate planning is particularly important for the owners of family businesses where continuity, succession, and liquidity issues become paramount.”

Fundamental components of estate planning for young families include the basics: designating guardians for children in a will, providing for distribution and asset management through a trust, investing in life insurance, and drafting a health care proxy.

“In addition, any asset that has a beneficiary, such as an insurance policy or IRA, should be reviewed to make certain that the disposition of this account is consistent with the remainder of the estate plan. Because these assets are governed by a beneficiary designation, they are often overlooked,” notes Ganz. “This includes a life insurance policy, a 401(k), or IRA.”

A word to the wise, don’t throw caution to the winds in the face of a divorce and re-marriage, or the birth of a new child, to avoid singing the blues, families need to update estate plans as their needs change.

Greater Boston DirectBuys hold holiday food drive.

December 4, 2008 //  by admin

ROCKLAND, SHREWSBURY, STONEHAM, MA…

Lost amid all the talk of bailouts and other disturbing economic news is the effect it’s had on people who are truly in need: the homeless and the hungry. In fact, according to a survey by the Greater Boston Food Bank, food banks and food pantries in Eastern Massachusetts are experiencing a 53 percent decrease in donations over the past year. DirectBuy, in an effort to increase awareness, is holding food drives at its Greater Boston showrooms in Rockland, Shrewsbury, and Stoneham.

The food drive will begin on December 8 and run until December 31 at these showrooms. Both DirectBuy members and the general public are welcome and encouraged to bring starch (dry cereal, pasta, etc.) and canned food items. The individual DirectBuy showrooms will, in turn, distribute these goods to local food pantries via the Greater Boston Food Bank.

“The holidays are a great time of year but it can also be a very difficult time for some, especially in challenging economic times. Hopefully, by holding these food drives, we can help ease the burden on these food pantries and bring this issue to light for our customers and residents of Greater Boston,” said John Massaria, owner of DirectBuy of Boston South.

The Greater Boston Food Bank’s survey also illuminated some additional disturbing trends, including:

●        90 percent of food pantries surveyed report an increase in the demand for their services since September 2007.

●        53 percent report a decrease in the amount of food donated; 38 percent report no change in demand.

●        47 percent report running out of food to meet that demand; 27 percent of those running out on every distribution.

Those willing to contribute canned goods and starches (e.g. dry cereal, pasta, etc.) to DirectBuy’s holiday food drive can visit DirectBuy Showrooms at the following addresses:

●        DirectBuy of Boston South, 11A Commerce Road, Rockland, MA, 781-878-8846.

●        DirectBuy of Boston West, 422 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury, MA, 508-842-8800.

●        DirectBuy of Boston North, 100A Fallon Road, Stoneham, MA, 781-438-8111.

DirectBuy franchises offer members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by purchasing wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. In addition, DirectBuy boasts a team of designers to help members with their purchases and gives them access to a roster of hand-selected contractors to expedite those projects.

Consumers interested in becoming members may obtain a Visitor’s Pass to attend an Open House in the Rockland location by contacting the showrooms listed above or visiting www.directbuy.com. For more information on the Greater Boston Food Bank, please visit www.gbfb.org.

December 4, 2008 //  by admin

The Boys and Girls Club of Marshfield, a non-profit organization that provides the area’s youth with enrichment and recreation programs in a safe environment, is now offering a new program known as “Money Matters” which teaches club members all about how to better manage their money.

Led by volunteer Joanna Degnan who is a CPA at Price Waterhouse Coopers, Money Matters promotes financial responsibility and independence among club members ages 13 to 18 years old by building their basic money management skills.

During the five-week program which runs through mid-January, participants learn how to manage a checking account, budget, save and invest. They also learn about starting small businesses and paying for college.

Money Matters features three key components for the teens and club staff:

· A Teen Personal Finance Guide is a fun, attractive booklet containing practical tips and activities to help teens learn the important skills of balancing a checkbook, creating a budget and saving and investing for college and retirement.

· A Facilitator’s Guide provides Club staff and volunteers with basic financial information and instructions for easy-to-implement small-group activities.

· A Money Matters Website, offers teens an engaging online tool for building their money management knowledge and skills through interactive activities, games and tools like a savings and financial aid calculator to plan for college.

“The program engages the kids in the basics of money management but then takes it a step further by teaching them how to invest their money wisely and potentially start a small business,” explained Greg Jackson, Executive Director of the club.

Children must be a member of the club in order to participate in Money Matters. The annual membership fee is $50. To learn more about the program, contact Kathleen Newcomb at the Boys and Girls Club (781) 834-2582.

Getting your shipping in shape. Local companies outsource shipping to Boston Pack and Ship.

December 3, 2008 //  by admin

BRAINTREE, MA…

In tough economic times, companies look for ways to not only cut costs, but do things more efficiently. One area where more and more companies look to outsource is their shipping, particularly items requiring specialized packing. Boston Pack and Ship, a small load shipping specialist for two decades, works with a number of companies as a quasi-shipping department.

“Many of these companies only ship product out less than a half a dozen times a month and many of the products they sell are electronic or computer type equipment which is a specialty to ship. So the dollars to have that expertise in-house might not be in the budget but at the same time it’s a necessity to growing their service. We provide that capability without all the overhead,” said Joe Fell, co-owner of Boston Pack and Ship.

Long time Boston Pack and Ship customer Pulse Systems Inc, of Canton, Massachusetts started in 1972, which designs systems for a wide variety of applications including, but not limited to weather monitoring, meteorological systems, wind shear detection, airborne Doppler radar, shipboard Doppler radar, homeland security, military and defense.

“The systems we design are quite sophisticated and require special care for shipping.  Due to the rapid growth of our business, many of our systems are being packaged by Boston Pack and Ship. We found that, in addition to having our own shipping department, it was more economical to have some of our shipping needs outsourced to Boston Pack and Ship, a company with more than two decades of shipping experience,” said Ethel Poulos, vice president of Pulse Systems, Inc.

As small load specialists, Boston Pack and Ship provides a number of services to accommodate hard-to-ship, delicate items, expensive business equipment and irreplaceable personal items for out-of-state and international moves. Those services include:

  • Small loads – with no minimum requirement; blanket-wrapping for fragile, delicate moves; full insurance available
  • Custom crates and packaging for computers, electronic instruments, prototypes, antiques and artwork.
  • State-of-the-art, foam-in-place solutions to protect valuables
  • Multiple U.S. and International shipping options—ocean or air—to help lower costs
  • Door-to-door and door-to-port delivery with insurance available
  • On-time pickups by appointment

For more information on the breadth of Boston Pack and Ship’s services, you can visit the company Web site at www.bostonpackandship.com. For a free quote on an out-of-state or international move or shipment, please call (800) 400-7204.

More than 50 Gables residents – both adults and children – participated in the ghoulish get together. Fun games included wrap a mummy, pin the nose on the pumpkin, candy toss, and decorate your own picture frame.  Contests featured costume parades for children to determine the cutest/most original costume, best costume and scariest costume.  There was also a pet parade for best costume. The festive party was held at the Gables community clubhouse.

“This was a fun event and also raised funds for a great cause,” noted Rami Itani of the Gables management team.  He added, “Having a party that helped the shelter brought the best out in everyone.”
