RI chiropractors concur that chiropractic perceptions have become reality; support new Gallup poll results

September 21, 2015 //  by admin

RHODE ISLAND…

A recent Gallup report commissioned by Palmer College of Chiropractic revealed that 33.6 million U.S. adults (14 percent) seek chiropractic care each year. That’s an increase over previous studies from other sources, including the 2012 National Health Interview Survey (20.6 million U.S. adults or 8 percent. Yet to doctors of the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island, one of the oldest chiropractic associations in the country, the results go deeper than more people having bad backs.

“The continued increased in people seeking chiropractic care reveals a major perception change,” said Dr. Michael Gottfried, president of the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island and chiropractic physician at Aquidneck Chiropractic in Middletown, Rhode Island. “Several years ago, some people might have gone to a chiropractor as a last resort. The poll reveals that, for many, chiropractic has become the first option for neck and back pain.”

Three of the key highlights from the Gallup Report affirm that assertion: Two-thirds (61 percent) of adult Americans believe chiropractors are effective at treating neck and back pain; The majority (57 percent) of adults are likely to see a chiropractor for neck or back pain; and more than 1/2 of all U.S. adults have visited a chiropractor, and more than 1/4 of them would choose chiropractic care first for back or neck pain.

“An interesting footnote to these figures is that nearly one half of all U.S. adults don’t know if their insurance covers chiropractic care,” said Gottfried. “In a day and age when people opt not to get treatment for certain ailments based on insurance, the increase in people going to chiropractors makes an even louder statement.”

All natural and without prescription medications, chiropractic has been found to be beneficial for numerous conditions above and beyond neck and back pain. Some of those include: headaches, asthma, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel, colic, and stress, just to name a few. For a complete list of conditions treatable with chiropractic, visit www.richiro.org.

Those all-natural benefits can include relief from headaches, asthma, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel, colic, and stress, just to name a few. Olympic ski champion Picabo Street, NFL legend Jerry Rice and Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman are but a few notable celebrities who have embraced chiropractic.

Winters Home Services Encourages Homeowners to Consider Water Heater Replacement Prior to Design Changes

September 21, 2015 //  by admin

Winters Home Services, an award-winning provider of plumbing, heating and cooling services to the greater Boston area, alerts consumers of new energy efficiency mandates on residential water heaters, which will ultimately affect the size and cost of these new systems.

Essentially residential gas, electric, and oil fired water heaters (that are sold in the U.S. market) manufactured after April 2015 must conform to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) new energy efficient standards.

“The DOE, which is looking to further improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions, has set a new mandatory standard,” explained Tim Flynn, owner of Winters Home Services.

The new manufacturing standards create a number of challenges for homeowners:

Space constraints – The newly manufactured water heaters are not going to be the same dimensions as the current standard water heaters, but may be a couple of inches wider and/or taller. This is due to the extra insulation that will be required in order to make the unit even more energy efficient. In addition, some of the venting may be larger. Installation of a new water heater may create challenges for some homeowners who have space constraints, such as a small water heater closet.

More expensive – New design configuration and additional materials used during manufacturing (in particular, insulation) to make the units more energy efficient will ultimately drive up the cost of new water heaters.

Electronic ignition – It is anticipated that the new gas water heater models will require electronic ignition. That means that a homeowner who currently has a standing pilot, will have to hire an electrician to install an electrical outlet when they replace their water heater with one of new models.

“Homeowners need to be aware of these changes. Water heaters cost approximately $1800-2200, but will essentially double in cost and take up more space as well as require homeowners to put in a new electrical outlet,” explained Flynn.

This is a significant economical issue for consumers. Typically, the life span of a water heater is seven to 10 years. Consumers should be prepared and consider replacing an older water heater now, prior to the changes in water heater design.

Replacing an oil fueled hot water heater? Be sure to check MassSave.com for residential rebates. A smiling angel. The Toothboss selects Maria Burke of Celtic Angels as its Smiling Neighbor.

September 16, 2015 //  by admin

Celtic Angels Owner Maria Burke, left, receives the Smiling Neighbor award from Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD.
Celtic Angels Owner Maria Burke, left, receives the Smiling Neighbor award from Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD.

SOUTH WEYMOUTH, MA…

Compassionate home care for the elderly has been the signature of Celtic Angels, Inc. since Owner Maria Burke founded the company back in 2005. In the 10 years since, the company has broadened its reach, expanding their staff and providing excellent care to their patients on the South and North shore. For those efforts, Burke has been named the recipient of The Smiling Neighbor award given by South Weymouth Dentist Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD.

“You cannot find a more noble and compassionate vocation than caring for the elderly,” said Dr. Wolfert, AKA “The Toothboss”, whose practice is located at 1121 Main Street. “All it takes is spending just a few minutes with Maria and you realize Celtic Angels is more than a business but her life’s passion. For that, she is very deserving winner of our Smiling Neighbor award.”

Burke drew her inspiration for her business from her grandfather, who worked as an orderly at a hospital in her native Ireland.

Said Burke, “I remember him regularly playing the accordion and singing for the patients and them being mesmerized by his genuine presence. But the one thing that I always think about is how truly happy he was just to see a simple smile cross their faces. I would watch him in awe and think how lucky I was to have such a role model. If every caregiver out there had his mentality or even just half of it, the care in the elder community would improve.”

For being selected as the Smiling Neighbor, Maria had the choice of receiving a $50 gift card to Stockholders or a Sonicare Easy Clean model (Burke chose the toothbrush).

Said Maria, “I’m very grateful to Dr. Wolfert for this recognition. Sharing a smile is a key part of elder care and making patients feel more comfortable and I’m grateful to have a new toothrush to make mine even brighter.

The Smiling Neighbor award is given out on a quarterly basis to citizens of Weymouth going above and beyond the call of duty for their fellow citizens. People can nominate a Smiling Neighbor by sending an e-mail of 200 words or less to toothboss1@aol.com. Please remember to include your name and telephone number as well as the name and telephone number or e-mail of the person they are nominating. Nominations can also be sent to The Toothboss, 1121 Main Street, South Weymouth, MA  02190.

For more information on The Toothboss, visit Dr. Wolfert’s website at www.toothboss.com or call 781-335-0604 to schedule a consultation.

Rodman & Rodman CPAs Take Part in American Biogas Council’s DC Fly-In

September 9, 2015 //  by admin

Kathy Parker, CPA, MST, Partner and Elysha Sturm, Staff Accountant at Rodman & Rodman CPAs represented Massachusetts at American Biogas Council’s (ABC) DC Fly-In held July 20-23, 2015 in Washington D.C. Rodman CPAs is a full service tax and accounting firm specializing in green energy and clean technology.

Rodman CPAs are members of ABC, which promotes the Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Industry. The Rodman team was among 24 ABC members from 11 states to attend meetings in the House and Senate on Capitol Hill, and a special Biogas Stakeholder Forum hosted by the USDA and EPA.

According to Parker, “One of the ABC’s primary goals is to ensure that renewable energy receives the same favorable treatment under federal and state laws as does fossil energy, and that all forms of renewable energy are treated equally on a comparative basis.”

Parker and Sturm had an opportunity to provide feedback on the next steps that USDA, EPA and DOE plan to take to support biogas project deployment. The Rodman team met with key staff of the offices of Senator Jerry Moran, Senator Maria Cantwell, Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Ed Markey, Congressman Mike Thompson and Jim Lyons, Tax Counsel -Senate Finance Committee Majority Staff and urged their support for Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which provides a demand and a marketplace for biogas.

The Rodman team also urged support of the extension of renewable electricity tax credits, as the Production Tax Credit (PTC) and the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) are essential in helping to drive investment in renewable energy. Additionally, they urged support of continued discretionary funding for Farm Bill programs (including include REAP, the Renewable Energy for America Program) and to maintain the mandatory funding levels passed in the Farm Bill.

“There was a Bill on the table that was presented to congress by the finance committee which would extend ITC/PTC for two years.  It was exciting to hear about it first hand, as typically extenders do not happen until the end of the year,” noted Parker. “Unfortunately, ITC/PTC was not extended at this time.”

Parker continued, “The purpose of the DC Fly-In was to continue the ongoing awareness of the need for anaerobic digester and the importance they bring to the renewable sector. It is imperative for these projects to continue to receive tax credits. Our goal at the DC Fly-In was to work with congress on tax extenders and other funding opportunities for the projects.”

About the ABC

The ABC’s mission is to create jobs, environmental sustainability, and energy independence by growing the U.S. biogas industry. The ABC represents over 200 organizations across the renewable energy, agriculture, waste and wastewater management, and transportation industries, including facility owners/operators, manufactures of tanks, engines, and other equipment, engineering organizations and institutions, utilities, financiers and lenders, and local and regional governments.
