Old Colony Elder Services’ employees hold drive to help those in need in Brockton and Plymouth

Miguel Fontes, Mathew Mangano, and Skyleen Lima of OCES with donated items for delivery to MainSpring House

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, are helping to support those who are experiencing homelessness this holiday season.

Led by OCES’ Protective Services (PS) and Money Management Program (MMP) team, OCES staff collected donations of socks and personal care items in an employee outreach drive held at OCES’ Brockton and Plymouth offices. The donations were delivered to MainSpring House shelters located at 54 North Main Street in Brockton and their new location on South Spooner Street in Plymouth.

“Each year, our Protective Services and Money Management Program team holds a drive to collect needed items for individuals experiencing homelessness in our community,” explained Teresa Kourtz, LSW, PS/MMP Director, who led the drive. “There are a number of people facing uncertain circumstances who are in need of emergency shelter. We strive to help by providing personal care necessities to those who don’t have ready access to these items.”

Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café Announces Grocery Partnership with Ted’s IGA of Hebron

December 27, 2017 //  by admin

Jennifer Armata, Steven Armata, Joe Puiia, Todge Armata, David Armata

Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café, a growing fast-casual dining establishment and wholesale bagel supplier, has announced a new bagel partnership with Ted’s IGA, located at 127 Main Street in Hebron, CT.

Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café has been supplying their signature bagels to independent grocers throughout Connecticut and has recently contracted with Ted’s Supermarket to supply Between Rounds signature bagels to the store’s gourmet bakery department.

Family-owned Between Rounds has been in business for more than two decades and is the brainchild of the Puiia brothers, who are Staten Island, NY natives. Between Rounds locations include South Windsor (Route 5); Vernon (at Vernon Circle Shopping Center); Manchester (Plaza at Buckland Hills); and Tolland (adjacent to Citgo Express Gas at 206 Merrow Road).

The Puiia hallmark is manufacturing and selling their own bagels, which sets them apart from other cafés. The popularity of their bagels inspired the Puiias to partner with independent grocers. The bagels are delivered to grocers fully baked so no additional labor is required of the bakery department.

Ted’s is an independently owned supermarket known for their extraordinary quality, service and competitive pricing. With a focus on freshness, Ted’s Supermarket works with many local suppliers, bringing fresh produce and dairy products from local farms and delicious bagels from Between Rounds, to their customers.

“Between Rounds is another local company that is a great fit. They have a great product that we are delighted to provide to our customers,” said Todge Armata, co-owner of Ted’s.

Ted’s Supermarket opened its doors to Hebron and the surrounding communities in 1973. Ted Armata with his two sons, Todge and David have grown the business into a cornerstone of the community. Todge and David are the third generation to be in the food business (their grandfather had owned a store in Holyoke, MA in 1932). The fourth generation is now working at Ted’s – Todge’s daughter Jennifer works in customer service and David’s son Steven is a baker in their bakery department.

“Between Rounds is honored to have Ted’s Supermarket carry our bagels. It makes it easier for anyone who does not live near one of our cafés to obtain our superior products right from their local market,” said Jerry Puiia, co-owner of Between Rounds.

Puiia met Todge Armata while helping his daughter run the fundraising Hot Dog Stand at Ted’s Supermarket. Established by Ted’s founder, the Hot Dog Stand is a unique local fundraiser that enables individuals to sell hot dogs with all the fixings (at no cost to the individual) for a day and collect 100 percent of the proceeds for their charitable cause. The popular Hot Dog Stand fundraiser has been operating for close to a decade and is just one of the ways that Ted’s gives back to the community.

“Some business alliances are formed on the golf course, but in this case, it all began at Ted’s famous Hot Dog Stand,” noted Puiia. “Between Rounds is proud to partner with other family-owned businesses that do so much for their community such as Ted’s Supermarket.”

Plymouth and Middleboro seminars outline how to obtain public speaking engagements.

December 22, 2017 //  by admin

You probably have a very good grasp of your topic. You just know that speaking locally or on a bigger stage would generate new clients, expert positioning, more referrals, better personal and company branding and differentiate you from the pack. Two local seminar dates are scheduled to lead you to center stage.

Choose from Wednesday, January 24th, 8-9:30 a.m. at the Plymouth Chamber, 134 Court Street, Plymouth, MA  02360 or Wednesday, January 31st,  8-9:30 a.m. at Cranberry Country Chamber, 9 Clayton Road, Middleboro, MA.

The seminar investment is $49 per person. Business professionals are encouraged to attend. Seminars will be led by Steven V. Dubin, founder of PR Works, who has both spoken locally and nationally and has been making similar speaking arrangements for clients for over 25 years.

From the local accountant to the national business coach, speaking engagements are a powerful way of moving prospects to clients. Remove barriers to speaking engagements? Learn how to reach out to meeting planners, conference organizers and fraternal club decision makers.  Simplify the packaging of your pitch kit.  Understand the negotiation of honorariums, travel and per diem expenses and the many speaking arrangement details.

Attendees will also learn how to identify best targets, build a database of prospects, develop an outline local or national speaking opportunities, submit credentials to national speaking portals and references, create a host of speaking topics, draft a Speaking Kit, prepare a presentation, reach out to potential speaking sources and coordinate the details of the speaking engagement.

For questions about the seminar, please contact Steve Dubin, PR Works, (781) 582-1061, email – SDubin@PRWorkzone.com. To register directly online for the Plymouth seminar, go to https://goo.gl/M5Evrb; for the Middleborough seminar, go to https://goo.gl/qzN7gy.

Discovery Map International partners with POI of Slovenia launch Discover POI

December 7, 2017 //  by admin

WAITSFIELD, VT and LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA…

Discovery Map International (DMI), the leading provider of curated maps and online guides to top tourist attractions, cities and towns throughout North America, recently partnered with POI (Points of Interest) of Slovenia—owner and operator of 16 maps across Slovenia–to form Discovery P.O.I. The new company will continue to franchise map locations across Slovenia and into neighboring countries across Europe.

Discovery POI’s distinctively colorful, hand-drawn maps will feature local dining, attractions, businesses, cultural experiences, ski destinations – and even the best locations to take selfies. Discovery POI hopes to make each map a fixture at local hotels, restaurants, shops, visitor information centers and other participating venues, as well as on its website.

The agreement between the two companies came through a fact-finding mission initiated by Iztok Cerv and Mark Tanko of POI. The pair reached out to DMI President Peter Hans seeking advice on growing their business internationally.  With more than 130 franchised map territories under its belt, Hans was happy to help. After several substantive conversations, Hans visited Slovenia to see POI’s operation in person. The rest, as they say, is history.

“Some things just make sense and our partnership with POI is one of them,” said Peter Hans. Given the markets Iztok and Mark were looking to target initially—specifically the ski and resort areas in the nearby Austria and Italian borders — I felt with our support and the system DMI can offer things could really take off.  Like I said, it just made sense to make this deal happen.”

Discovery POI’s offices are located in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Slovenia borders Italy to the west and Austria to the north.

“We are very pleased with this partnership agreement to form Discovery POI.

Peter and his team have quite a bit of experience in this industry and the maps speak for themselves,” said Cerv. “With our combined experience as map makers and franchisors, we have an offering and a support base that will be very attractive to potential franchise owners.”

“The appeal of our maps and the flexible hours make the Discovery POI franchise opportunity unique and appealing. It’s not a 9-to-5 gig and you don’t necessarily have to work 12 months a year to run a successful franchise. You just have to be willing to work hard when you work,” said Hans.

DMI began as Resort Maps in the late 1970s in Waitsfield, Vermont and began franchising maps throughout the United States in 1992. The colorful, hand-drawn maps became such a favorite of travelers for navigating local dining, attractions, businesses, cultural experiences and ski destinations that tourists frequently made the comment, “I wish we had these in our town.” Today, Discovery Map is in 130 communities in North America and has 91 franchise owners.

Forbes Magazine recently named Discovery Map® one of the top 10 franchises to buy with an initial investment under $150,000. The initial franchise fee is $25,000.

For more information on the Discovery Map franchise opportunity, visit https://discoverymapfranchise.com/.

Talking Information Center’s 25th Annual Wine Dinner A Great Success

November 29, 2017 //  by admin

(Left to Right) Talking Information Center’s Executive Director Jim Bunnell stands with State Senator Vinny deMacedo and State Representative Jim Cantwell at the 25th Annual Wine Dinner fundraiser. (Seated, left to right) Sue Powell, Mike Powell, Leo Rosette, Netta Vercollone, Paul Vercollone, Steve Wildes and Mary Jo Wildes.

Talking Information Center (TIC) of Marshfield, MA, an award-winning, non-profit reading service broadcasting 24-hours a day to thousands of visually impaired and otherwise print impaired listeners throughout the state, raised over $65,000 at their 25th Annual Wine Dinner fundraiser held November 2, 2017 at the Barker Tavern in Scituate, MA.

TIC had a “full house”, with 120 guests in attendance and contributions from more than 60 businesses, institutions and individuals. Guests enjoyed a decadent five-course meal with a main course of Roast Lamb, created specifically for this event by head chef George Jordan. Each course was perfectly paired with wine generously donated by Trinchero Family Estate.

Kerry MacDonald, LICSW, Therapist at Interfaith Social Services, Dr. Nancy Harris, Psychologist, Author and TIC Volunteer, and David Boyle, Purveyor of Wine were the evening’s featured speakers. Live and silent auctions rounded out the lively evening.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their generosity and support in raising over $65,000 this year, which is a 48 percent increase over last year’s Wine Dinner event,” said Jim Bunnell, Executive Director of TIC. “TIC is the communication network for individuals with disabilities, including the blind and visually impaired, as well as seniors and veterans. Funding raised through our Annual Wine Dinner is crucial as we continue to develop and grow our programming to better serve more than 30,000 listeners statewide.”

TIC’s staff and volunteers provide human voiced broadcasts of local news, articles, and items of interest to their audience as well as broadcasts of live events and conferences to ensure that listeners are informed about local, national, and international news along with services available to them to promote independence and enrich quality of life.

“2017 brought amazing growth in our listenership, volunteers, and collaborations and we look ahead to the future. In 2018, we hope to create a South Shore Low-Vision Group. Hosting these groups at TIC allows for those unable to attend to have access to the information via our live broadcasts. TIC will also work to read every local newspaper and have our programming available on every local community cable channel in Massachusetts,” said Bunnell.

TIC would like to thank the following: Flagship Sponsor, the Emilson Family; Jack Conway and Company Inc. and Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired as Benefactor Sponsors; Rockland Trust Charitable Foundation, the Clifford Family, Tiny & Sons Auto Glass, Emerson Swan, VERC Enterprises, and Sheriff Joe McDonald as Table Sponsors; Protectowire FireSystems and Roche Bros. as Friends of TIC; and Bond Printing & Marketing as Printing Sponsor; and George Jordan, Becky Smith and The Barker Tavern for their innovative menus and support.

TIC would also like to thank special guests State Senator Vinny deMacedo and State Representative Jim Cantwell who have worked tirelessly to secure funding for TIC for many years.

All proceeds from the Annual Wine Dinner directly benefit TIC, which serves the listening needs of thousands of visually impaired and otherwise disabled listeners throughout Massachusetts, southern New Hampshire and Connecticut through its network affiliates in Mashpee, Pittsfield, Lowell, Springfield and Worcester.

Bunnell continued, “Thank you to our guests, sponsors, donors, board members and volunteers for a tremendously successful 25th Annual Wine Dinner!”

Reaching New Audiences

More than 120,000 people of all ages in Massachusetts reported to have a visual disability in 2015 according to the National Federation of the Blind. Two out of three aging Americans confront vision loss. Others who experience vision problems are living with AIDS, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, paralysis and other physical ailments that make it difficult to hold a publication or turn its pages. Approximately 10,000 people turn 65 every day in the U.S. and in Massachusetts, 34 percent of people with disabilities are 65 and older.

The Hub of the Massachusetts Reading Network

Based in Marshfield, MA, TIC is a proud member of the International Association of Audible Information Services (IAAIS), and is the hub of the Massachusetts Reading Network, broadcasting to all of Massachusetts as well as southern New Hampshire and Connecticut. The non-profit reading service operates with the help of more than 600 volunteers statewide, broadcasting newspapers, magazines, books, special consumer information, medical and stock market updates, jobs, sports, supermarket specials, voting guides, community newspapers, and television programs. TIC also offers cultural programming such as old-time radio drama, theater, and poetry. TIC’s newest programming includes the Radio and Podcast Players and Veterans Voice.

TIC programming may be accessed several ways: via live audio stream at http://www.ticnetwork.org; by utilizing a specially tuned radio receiver; through AudioNow by calling 712-832-7025 from a home or cell phone; or by smartphone app. Listeners with smartphones may download the free TIC app by typing “Talking Information Center” in Apple or in the Google Play store for Android devices.

In 1977, Ed Perry, the founder of radio station WATD-FM in Marshfield, MA, donated his Subsidiary Carrier Authorization signal for use as the first radio reading service in New England. Operating similarly to other broadcast networks, TIC has affiliates throughout the state of Massachusetts that provide inserts of local news and information that is of interest to listeners in their area. The Executive Office of Elder Affairs oversees TIC, which is located at 130 Enterprise Drive, Marshfield, MA 02050. For more information visit www.ticnetwork.org or call (781) 834-4400.
