Type One

First diabetes-specific fitness center to open in Norwell, MA. Building a culture of good health with fitness, nutrition and support.

September 22, 2022 //  by admin

HINGHAM AND NORWELL, MA… The best way to predict how well someone will manage their diabetes is by how much support they get from family, friends and their local community.

Type One is building that supportive community.

The first athletic center to focus on type 1 diabetes wellness, Type One Fitness, is now under construction at 386 Washington Street, Route 53, Norwell, MA.  Individuals and families living with diabetes and the local community will be attracted to the center for its credentialed fitness trainers, nutritionists and state of the art exercise equipment and studios.

Type One is committed to expanding and enhancing support for the many families and individuals living with diabetes throughout the South Shore. The new 11,000+ square foot first-class wellness facility will be occupied by Type One Fitness (6,000+ square feet) with plans to include services such as massage therapy, Pilates, physical therapy, etc. to complement the facility.

About 1 in 500 people in the U.S. are living with type 1 diabetes. Less than one-third of people with type 1 diabetes in the U.S. are achieving target blood glucose control levels. Better fitness, better nutrition, and better support can change that.

Type One Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Hingham, MA is dedicated to providing essential funding for research for a cure for type 1 diabetes while also helping to ensure that those living with the disease have the support and resources they need to survive, strive and achieve their dreams. They are launching Type One Fitness to provide a higher-level fitness and personal training experience where clients and members can achieve long-term lifestyle changes through exercise and nutrition, and where all-around well-being is enhanced through unique features, services, and amenities.

Type One Fitness will provide a fully integrated health program for type 1 diabetes patients and the general public. The center offers a place for real time conversation and education for those living with type 1 diabetes. A place that improves the lives of others in the community by offering support not only for individuals with diabetes, but also for parents and caregivers, partners, siblings and friends as well. Outside of a medical facility, there is currently no facility that welcomes and merges a comprehensive type 1 diabetes connection with the general public. Type One Fitness does just that while enabling those affected by the disease to obtain any non-medical support that they need.

“There has been a significant increase in new diagnosed cases of type 1 and type 2 diabetes among youth and adults in the U.S.,” explained Paul Foti, co-founder of Type One. “This is extremely concerning. Living with type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune disease, is a lifelong challenge. As a community, we must do all that we can through awareness, education, and support.”

Type One Fitness will provide clients and members with a daily program of exercise and a healthy approach that perfectly suits their lifestyles and needs. Along with Certified Personal Trainers, Nutritionists, and Life Coaches, the facility will be equipped with the latest technology, media, cardiovascular equipment, ellipticals, bikes, rowers, treadmills, strength training, free weights and functional and flexibility machines.

Type One Fitness will provide a place where the type 1 diabetes community can find support for the autoimmune disease and end the stigma of what type 1 diabetes is and who it affects through education and awareness programming.

Type One Fitness is the brainchild of Foti and Type One co-founder Tyson Sunnerberg, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 21 years old and knows firsthand that the right resources and support make all the difference in the world when it comes to managing this disease. Five years ago, at the age of five, Sunnerberg’s daughter Elyse was also diagnosed with type 1, which intensified his drive toward a cure, and provided a firsthand understanding of the constant challenges the entire family faces when living with an individual with type 1 diabetes.

Foti continued, “Type One Fitness is committed to building a culture of good health, well-being and inclusion for youth and families, as well as to provide health and human services for its members and their families.”

Construction is being handled by Callahan/Hoffman Company, Inc. of Norwell, MA.
A capital campaign for the build-out is underway.

Type One Impact
Over the past decade, Type One has made an incredible impact toward their mission of funding research to cure type 1 diabetes (T1D) and supporting those in need of help to manage their disease through their Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race. The Par and Serve for the Cure! golf and tennis tourney takes the place of the annual obstacle course race which had traditionally been held at Wompatuck State Park and Bare Cove Park in Hingham. To date, Type One Renegade Run events have generated over $120,000 in support of research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The Faustman Lab is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. In addition to supporting the Faustman Lab at MGH, Type One donation and fundraising platforms help provide scholarships to local children with type 1 diabetes to attend type 1 diabetes camp, award high school students scholarships to continue their education, as well as providing qualifying recipients with assistance for diabetes management and treatment. ACE! Tennis & Golf Tournaments at Plymouth Clubs Raise $60K for Type 1 Diabetes Research and Assist those Living with the Disease

October 11, 2021 //  by admin

Thanks to 150 participants swinging away in epic tennis and golf tournaments held September 15th in Plymouth, Type One raised over $60K in support of type 1 diabetes research and to assist those living with the disease.

Hingham, MA-based Type One has made an incredible impact toward their mission of funding research to cure type 1 diabetes (T1D) by supporting the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), while also helping provide scholarships to local children with type 1 diabetes to attend type 1 diabetes camp, and providing qualifying recipients with assistance for diabetes management and treatment.

Type One, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization held their first “Serving For The Cure!” tennis tournament on the indoor tennis courts at the Village Racquet & Fitness Club in Plymouth. The tournament was held in tandem with the organization’s inaugural “Par For The Cure! Golf Tourney” held the same day at Crosswinds Golf Club, also in Plymouth. Both events sold out.

(Left to right) Nathan Sunnerberg; Tyson Sunnerberg, co-founder of Type One; Dr. Faustman; Paul Foti, co-founder of Type One; and Elyse Sunnerberg.

Following the tournaments, tennis players and golfers gathered for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, raffle, silent auction and live entertainment with Ward Hayden of Ward Hayden & The Outliers acoustic live performance at Crosswinds Golf Club.

During the reception, special guest Dr. Denise Faustman, director of the Immunobiology Laboratory at MGH who oversees the Faustman Lab, talked about discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes to supporters.

“It’s hard to develop a generic drug development program and that wouldn’t be possible without the generosity and funding of Type One,” said Dr. Faustman. “We’ve identified a drug, BCG (developed for TB in France 125 years ago) and are in advanced human clinical trials now – Phase 2 trials – and will start a subset of clinical trials in children soon. We sincerely appreciate the philanthropy and thank Type One, their sponsors and everyone for their efforts and donations.”

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.

November 11, 2020 //  by admin

Footsteps heard around the world as popular obstacle course race goes virtual to raise funds for research and a cure for type 1 diabetes.

November is National Diabetes Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day. Type One, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Hingham, MA, recognizes a world free of type 1 diabetes and is dedicated to that future by raising public awareness and funds toward a cure through research.

With a goal to raise awareness and increase their footprint, Type One’s Renegade Run, the popular obstacle course race supporting type 1 diabetes research and a cure, did exactly that this year. After pivoting to a virtual four-mile run/walk due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Renegade Virtual Run successfully expanded their reach across the globe, with participants from Australia, France and the Netherlands, and stretching from the U.S. West Coast to East Coast and states in-between.

“Although our race looked different this year, our virtual format was a tremendous success in that we were able to reach well beyond our borders, receiving support for our mission and vision of a cure to end T1D,” explained Type One’s co-founder, Paul Foti.

Renegade Virtual Run allowed participants to complete the race anytime, anywhere from mid-September to mid-October. This year marked the ninth year of the obstacle course race which has traditionally been held at Wompatuck State Park and Bare Cove Park in Hingham.

Renegade Virtual Run supports the “Type One Cares” campaign dedicated to building a community to assist those affected by type 1 diabetes with support, education and endowment, so they can live a powerful life beyond the diagnosis. The Type One Cares campaign does this while continuing to fund research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). To date, Renegade Run has generated over $100,000 to support the Faustman Lab which is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.

In the U.S., diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Findings from the CDC’s National Diabetes Statistics Report, state that just over one in 10 Americans have diabetes, and there has been a significant increase in new diagnosed cases of type 1 and type 2 diabetes among youth in the U.S.

“Type 1 diabetes doesn’t just involve the person living with the disease, it involves their entire family and support system,” explained Foti. “We’re a local nonprofit that is proud to create an event that provided communities around the world with hope, with an outlet to come together virtually to raise awareness and funds toward a cure for type 1 diabetes and to assist those living with the disease.”

In addition to supporting the Faustman Lab at MGH, Type One donation and fundraising platforms help provide scholarships to local children with type 1 diabetes to attend type 1 diabetes camp, as well as providing qualifying recipients with assistance for diabetes management and treatment. Call for Sponsors – Renegade Virtual Run to be held September 12-27th in support of diabetes research and a cure

August 28, 2020 //  by admin

Type One’s annual Renegade Run has gone virtual and is putting out a call for sponsors.

For the past eight years, Type One has held the popular Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race in Hingham’s Wompatuck State Park and Bare Cove Park to support diabetes research and a cure. This year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing, a four-mile Renegade Virtual Run, which includes 20 challenging “obstacles,” will be held September 12-27, 2020.

Type One’s Renegade Virtual Run sponsors support the Type One Cares campaign, a charity that is making significant strides to support individuals living with type 1 diabetes, while continuing to fund research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). To date, the Renegade Run has generated over $100K to support the Faustman Lab which is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.

Major Sponsors for 2020

Prime Automotive Group is the Premier Sponsor for the race again this year. Honey Dew is a Major Sponsor and they have been with Type One Renegade Run since day one. Walmart, Eastern Bank and Global Vision Advisors are also sponsors.

According to Paul Foti, co-founder of Type One, “We are honored and proud to have such amazing sponsors. Without the generous support of our sponsors, Renegade Run would not be possible. Thank you for helping to provide a platform for our Renegades to challenge themselves, for friends and families to band together in honor of their loved ones living with T1D and for joining in our efforts to raise awareness and funds for research toward the cure.”

Sponsorships are available. To sponsor Type One’s Renegade Virtual Run, visit https://typeonerenegaderun.com/sponsors/

Renegade Virtual Run – How It Works

Participants complete a four-mile run, jog or walk, along with the series of 20 challenging exercises or “obstacles” on their own. Participants can map their own outdoor four-mile route or run/walk the route indoors on a treadmill.

For local runners, Type One offers the option of charted four-mile routes through local parks – which is the closest thing to Renegade Run’s traditional race. Simply choose the starting time and Type One will send a trail map to run.

20 Challenging “Obstacles”

In previous years, the traditional Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race featured four miles of paved trails and wooded terrain with more than 30 obstacles such as monkey bars to cross, walls and cargo nets to climb, and tunnels to crawl through. With this year’s Renegade Virtual Run, a 20-20 challenge is presented: 20 obstacles with 20 reps each. These obstacles can be done at any time throughout the course. The obstacles are all bodyweight exercises that use an individual’s own weight to provide resistance against gravity, such as pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, twisting and balancing. The list of exercises is provided to registrants via their confirmation email.

Participants use any tracking method (GPS device/watch, tracking website or app, or treadmill reading), to track their run and record proof for submission. Once the race and obstacles are completed, participants share their time, photos and videos with Type One on social media or by email.

Friends, families and co-workers have the option to form Virtual Teams as they complete the online registration process. There will be free tech t-shirts and finisher medals for those who complete the race, a commemorative bib, as well as opportunities to win prizes.

Looking for a fitness challenge that also supports a good cause? Renegade Virtual Run & 20-20 Obstacle Challenge

August 10, 2020 //  by admin

Calling all runners, fitness enthusiasts and walkers looking for a unique fitness challenge! Registration is now open for the Renegade Virtual Run, a four-mile race with a special 20-20 obstacle challenge.

Over the last eight years, Type One has held the popular Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race in Hingham’s Wompatuck State Park and Bare Cove Park to support diabetes research and a cure. This year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing, a four-mile Renegade Virtual Run, which includes 20 challenging “obstacles,” will be held September 12-27, 2020.

Anytime, Anyplace – How It Works

Participants complete a four-mile run, jog or walk, along with the series of 20 challenging exercises or “obstacles” on their own. Participants can map their own outdoor four-mile route or run/walk the route indoors on a treadmill. For local runners, Type One offers the option of charted four-mile routes through local parks – which is the closest thing to Renegade Run’s traditional race. Type One’s Paul Foti commented, “We’re not going to sugarcoat it, so to speak. The 20 ‘obstacles’ with 20 reps may be quite challenging for many participants. The obstacles are part of the attraction of our traditional Renegade Run and what really sets it apart and makes it so popular.”

Renegade Virtual Run supports the Type One Cares campaign, a charity that is making significant strides to support individuals living with type 1 diabetes, while continuing to fund

research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). To date, the Renegade Run has over one hundred thousand dollars to support the Faustman Lab which is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases.

Foti continued, “We invite runners and walkers from New England and beyond to participate. The purpose of our Renegade Virtual Run is to have fun, stay motivated and to connect with each other as we continue to raise awareness and funds toward a cure for type 1 diabetes.”

Friends, families and co-workers have the option to form Virtual Teams as they complete the online registration process. There will be free tech t-shirts and finisher medals for those who complete the race, a commemorative bib, as well as opportunities to win prizes.
