South Shore Skin Center is First to Offer Thermage Treatments for the Body

September 8, 2009 //  by admin

South Shore Skin Center, caring for thousands of patients at their dermatology offices in Cohasset and Plymouth, now offers Thermage treatments to patients looking to firm and tighten their arms, abdomen and thighs.

Always ahead of the curve, South Shore Skin Center practitioners now offer Thermage treatments for the body, which utilizes radio-frequency technology to tighten and contour the skin.

Thermage is a non-invasive procedure that effectively smoothes wrinkled, sagging skin on the upper arms, abdomen and thighs. Best of all, patients see results after one treatment and there is no recovery time.

“As we age, the collagen in our skin breaks down which results in wrinkles and sagging. Thermage is the ideal option for many patients who would like to take years off their skin. It does not involve surgery, anesthesia or injections. There’s no downtime and a treatment takes approximately 90 minutes,” explained Dr. Richard Eisen, dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center.

To arrange a Thermage consultation with a South Shore Skin Center practitioner, contact at 508-747-0711.

Skin Care Expert Educates Other Practitioners in the Latest Cosmetic Laser Treatments

July 15, 2009 //  by admin

Dr. Richard Eisen, M.D., a board certified dermatologist and founder of South Shore Skin Center, with locations in Cohasset and Plymouth, recently educated physicians and advanced heath practitioners (estheticians, nurses, physician assistants) from across Massachusetts in the latest cosmetic laser technology treatments.

Last week, Dr. Eisen, a recognized leading expert in the field of laser therapy, educated skin care practitioners at a Candela Laser Corporation course held at Massachusetts Medical Society’s headquarters in Waltham. Dr. Eisen lectured and provided live demonstrations of advanced laser therapies including the Alex TriVantage laser; Gentle Max; VBeam Perfecta and Quadralase, a Fractional CO2 laser.

Laser technologies can smooth wrinkles and lines; improve the appearance of surgical scars, acne and acne scarring; remove hair; resurface soft tissues; improve pigmentation and eliminate redness and broken blood vessels.

“Laser technologies are extremely effective and minimally invasive. Laser treatments can often be performed in less than 30 minutes with outstanding results that may last for years depending on the type of treatment,” noted Dr. Eisen. He continued, “Laser therapies are certainly becoming more popular. Recently, I was approached by a tattoo parlor owner who wanted to potentially expand his business by utilizing laser treatments to get rid of unwanted tattoos for his clients.”

Dr. Eisen’s next speaking engagement for physicians will be held on July 22, 2009 in Providence, RI and will cover the advanced techniques and proper use of Juvederm and injectable fillers and Botox.

For more information, contact South Shore Skin Center at 508-747-0711.

Skin Cancer Experts Compile “Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer”

June 15, 2009 //  by admin

Given the recent recognition of unusually high skin cancer rates on the South Shore, South Shore Skin Center, with locations in Cohasset and Plymouth, are compiling a list of “Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer”.

The public is encouraged to add to the list which will be published on South Shore Skin Center’s website – http://www.southshoreskincenter.com. Public suggestions may be emailed to sdubin@prworkzone.com. The deadline is June 27th – just after the conclusion of the public school year.

Some initial Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites include South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, Sam Diego’s tented patio in Plymouth, The Company Theater in Norwell, South Shore Natural Center in Norwell and F1 Boston in Braintree.

Last summer it was reported that some of the wealthiest communities on the South Shore have the highest melanoma skin cancer rates, in some cases more than double the number expected, according to newly released state data.

The latest Cancer Incidence in Massachusetts Report, released by the Department of Public Health, shows that between 2001 and 2005 melanoma occurred well beyond projections in Cohasset, Duxbury, Norwell, Hingham and Milton.

“We are encouraging families to be very careful about sun exposure and focusing on less sunny, yet fun summer events can help minimize that exposure,” noted Dr. Richard Eisen, a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset.

Dr. Ramzi Saad, also a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, added, “Summer means free time to explore and try new things.  The Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer program is intended to give families fun and safe ideas.”

South Shore Skin Center Supports “Don’t Fry Day” on Friday, May 22nd and encourages families to learn more & share info

May 13, 2009 //  by admin

South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices South of Boston strives to create greater awareness of the dangers of UV exposure and skin cancer by supporting the “Don’t Fry Day” on May 22nd

May 22, 2009 has been designated as “Don’t Fry Day” by the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention and is sponsored by the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation of Hingham. “Don’t Fry Day” is dedicated to educating children and teens about skin cancer and its prevention. Recent data has shown that New England has the highest concentration of melanoma cases, and melanoma is the #1 cancer in young, white American women. South Shore Skin Center encourages families to practice being SunAWARE on “Don’t Fry Day” and to share their knowledge with others in order to prevent skin cancer.

Skin cancer is most commonly caused by overexposure to sunlight and artificial UV radiation (as in tanning beds). South Shore Skin Center recommends that everyone follow SunAWARE, an acronym that stands for:

· Avoid unprotected UV exposure any time and seek shade

· Wear sun protective clothing including hats and sunglasses

· Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen prior to UV exposure and reapply every two hours

· Routinely check your whole body for changes in your skin and report suspicious changes to a health care practitioner.

· Educate your family and community about sun protection.

The doctors at South Shore Skin center also advise that anyone can develop skin cancer anywhere on the body. It’s important to see a dermatologist for spots that are new or changing and that are:

· Persistent

· Easily irritated

· Enlarging

· Recurrent

To learn more about “Don’t Fry Day”, visit www.skincancerprevention.org or contact South Shore Skin Center in Cohasset at (781) 383-3340 or in Plymouth at (508) 747-0711.

South Shore Skin Center Shares Sun Safety Tips with over 800 Kids & Parents at Plymouth Little League’s Opening Day

May 5, 2009 //  by admin

South Shore Skin Center, a sponsor of the Town of Plymouth’s Girls Softball team, was well-received last week as they provided more than 1,000 samples of sunscreen along with sun safety information to over 800 parents and kids at Plymouth Little League’s (very sunny) Opening Day.
Dr. Ramzi Saad, along with his young daughter Amelia who is well-versed in sun safety, and his colleague Jeanne Gutowski of South Shore Skin Center spent most of the day providing the community with information about sun safety, skin cancer and the most effective way to apply sunscreen. Cetaphil, Neutrogena and SolBar sunscreen samples were given to all.
According to the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention, there are over a million new cases of skin cancer each year, which outnumbers all other cancers combined.
Melanoma is the leading cause of death from skin cancer. Early detection is the only way to prevent it from becoming deadly. The New England area has the highest concentration of melanoma cases, partially due to weather patterns of intermittent, intense sunlight which increases residents’ risk.
“We can reduce melanoma incidence by teaching skin cancer prevention and early detection. Anyone can develop skin cancer. It is easily recognizable and preventable. Educating kids and their parents/guardians is key. Sunscreen should be applied before UV exposure – and UV exists even on cloudy days. Children who play sports and spend a lot of time outdoors should always wear sunscreen,” noted Dr. Saad.

Dr. Richard Eisen, a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset recently spoke to the Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA) along with his wife, Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, Executive Director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation.

The duo shared their expert knowledge of sun safety and melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) prevention with more than 100 DNA members at the DNA’s 27th Annual Convention held in San Francisco on March 6th.

They discussed how skin cancer is most commonly caused by overexposure to sunlight, or artificial UV radiation and recommended that everyone follow SunAWARE, an acronym coined by Mary and John Barrow, authors of Sun Protection for Life: Your Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy and Beautiful Skin. SunAWARE stands for:

· Avoid unprotected UV exposure any time and seek shade

· Wear sun protective clothing including hats and sunglasses

· Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen prior to UV exposure and reapply every two hours

· Routinely check your whole body for changes in your skin and report suspicious changes to a health care practitioner.

· Educate your family and community about sun protection.

Dr. Eisen taught that anyone can develop melanoma anywhere on their body and that new and changing moles should be evaluated. He also shared five tips on how to identify potentially dangerous moles or melanomas:

· Moles that are asymmetric, where one side of the mole does not match the other.

· Moles that have edges that are irregular, ragged or blurred.

· A mole that has more than one color, with shades of black, brown, red, white, blue or tan.

· Moles that are larger than a pencil eraser.

· Moles that bleed, itch or change in appearance.

“Certain types of moles have a higher risk of becoming malignant melanomas. Melanoma can be deadly because it can spread to other parts of the body. But, it may be cured in its early stages. It’s very important to take preventative measures such as those outlined in SunAWARE and to watch for changes in the skin and follow up on questionable or changing moles with a dermatologist as soon as possible,” explained Dr. Eisen.

South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset, cautions consumers about “Botox Parties” where Botox injections are one of the highlights of the party.

Botox parties are very popular, especially with brides and their bridal parties who want to look their best on the “big day”. Botox is used to treat lines around the eyes, frown lines between the eyes, and lines on the forehead that often appear with age. Botox works by relaxing the muscles that contract to form these lines, creating a smoother appearance in the treated areas. Yet, there is significant health risk to those who receive Botox injections outside of a doctor’s office.

South Shore Skin Center warns consumers of the dangers of receiving Botox injections anywhere but a physician’s office:

· The Botox used in a home setting or other non-medical environment may not be direct from Allergan, the makers of the highest grade of Botox Cosmetic (Botulinum Toxin A) which is FDA approved. There is no guarantee that the solution being used at a party is even safe for injection.

· If laboratory botulinum toxin is used, rather than Botox Cosmetic, systemic effects may occur as were seen in the case of the doctor, several years ago, who paralyzed several patients and himself by injecting high concentrations of veterinary grade botulism toxin. Individuals should check to be sure that the bottle says “Botox Cosmetic”.

· If the Botox is not reconstituted properly and/or not kept refrigerated, it may become inactive.

· If sterile conditions are not observed when reconstituting or administering the Botox, infection may develop.

· At a Botox party, there are no medical personnel on hand to assist in case of an immediate adverse reaction.

· Administration of Botox by those who are untrained may not be done correctly. Improper placement of the Botox may result in brow droop. Other side effects include bruising, headache and lid droop.

“Although a Botox type of solution may be obtained outside of a physician’s office, we do not recommend using it. The risk of serious illness, adverse effects and infection is significant when a questionable solution of Botox is injected by those who are not qualified,” explained Dr. Richard Eisen, dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center.

He continued, “At South Shore Skin Center, patient safety is a priority. For anyone who is interested in receiving Botox Cosmetic, we recommend that you consult a dermatologist.”

Dr. Eisen is among Allergan Corp.’s national training staff in the use of Botox Cosmetic. South Shore Skin Center uses only the highest grade of Botox Cosmetic available, known as Botulinum Toxin A, which is an FDA approved, highly purified form of the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium made by Allergan, to ensure patient safety. Qualified medical staff who administer Botox Cosmetic at South Shore Skin Center are fully trained.
