Winters Home Services Encourages Homeowners to Consider Water Heater Replacement Prior to Design Changes

September 21, 2015 //  by admin

Winters Home Services, an award-winning provider of plumbing, heating and cooling services to the greater Boston area, alerts consumers of new energy efficiency mandates on residential water heaters, which will ultimately affect the size and cost of these new systems.

Essentially residential gas, electric, and oil fired water heaters (that are sold in the U.S. market) manufactured after April 2015 must conform to the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) new energy efficient standards.

“The DOE, which is looking to further improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions, has set a new mandatory standard,” explained Tim Flynn, owner of Winters Home Services.

The new manufacturing standards create a number of challenges for homeowners:

Space constraints – The newly manufactured water heaters are not going to be the same dimensions as the current standard water heaters, but may be a couple of inches wider and/or taller. This is due to the extra insulation that will be required in order to make the unit even more energy efficient. In addition, some of the venting may be larger. Installation of a new water heater may create challenges for some homeowners who have space constraints, such as a small water heater closet.

More expensive – New design configuration and additional materials used during manufacturing (in particular, insulation) to make the units more energy efficient will ultimately drive up the cost of new water heaters.

Electronic ignition – It is anticipated that the new gas water heater models will require electronic ignition. That means that a homeowner who currently has a standing pilot, will have to hire an electrician to install an electrical outlet when they replace their water heater with one of new models.

“Homeowners need to be aware of these changes. Water heaters cost approximately $1800-2200, but will essentially double in cost and take up more space as well as require homeowners to put in a new electrical outlet,” explained Flynn.

This is a significant economical issue for consumers. Typically, the life span of a water heater is seven to 10 years. Consumers should be prepared and consider replacing an older water heater now, prior to the changes in water heater design.

Winters Home Services Offers Homeowners Helpful Plumbing Tips to Save Water & Money

August 17, 2015 //  by admin

Tim Flynn, Winters Home Services
Tim Flynn, Winters Home Services

An average household of four uses about 400 gallons of water per day. From showers and toilets to washing machines, dishwashers and more, that’s a lot of water. But, if you have a leak or have to wait for your water to heat up, you may be using many more gallons and paying dearly for them on your water bill.

Winters Home Services, an award-winning provider of plumbing, heating, cooling, and drain services to residents throughout the greater Boston area, offers helpful plumbing tips to save water and money:

Repair leaks promptly – If you have a leaky faucet, toilet or pipe in your home, fix it immediately before it becomes a much bigger and more expensive problem. Even if it’s a slow leak, such as a dripping faucet, it can account for more than 10 percent of your water usage.

If you don’t know if you have a leak, your water meter readings can provide the clue. When water is not in use, check the meter twice in a two-hour time span. If the readings change, then there is a leak somewhere in your home.

If you can’t determine the source of the leak but your meter readings indicate you definitely have one, call in a professional plumber. You may have a leaky pipe behind a wall, and if left alone, will cause extensive damage that ruins the drywall, deteriorates the framing over time and causes mold growth. A leaky pipe is also an early sign of a burst pipe, which will result in greater damage to your home.

Stop a running toilet – A running toilet can cost you hundreds of dollars and is a major contribution to a costly water bill. It is generally the result of broken internal parts. It could be that a simple repair on the valves is needed, or there could be a larger issue.

“Many people think that showering or doing laundry uses the most water, but actually, the toilet accounts for the largest use of water in a home. If you have a leaky or running toilet, your water bill can skyrocket,” explained Tim Flynn, owner. “If you hear the toilet running or it flushes slowly or overflows often, get it checked out right away. Clogged drains waste water as well and can become a major problem.”

Waiting for hot water – If you turn on the sink or shower and wait anywhere from 30 seconds to over a minute for the water to heat up, precious gallons of clean water go down the drain. You are paying for that water to get hot while it runs. Consider replacing your traditional storage water heater with a Tankless Water Heater or installing a Hot Water Recirculating System. Recirculation pumps will get the water to the faucet faster and keep it hot in the line longer. They usually cost approximately $1000, which can be recouped in about two and a half years. Either system will ensure immediate delivery of hot water when you need it and provide significant water savings.

Winters Home Services shares plumbing tips in a number of videos on their website. Learn more about fixing a leaky faucet, testing your toilet for leaks and more by viewing Winters’ videos at www.wintershomeservices.com/videos.php.

Cambridge Home Cooling Experts Outline Ductless Air Conditioning Advantages

July 6, 2015 //  by admin

Tim Flynn and the Winters team
Tim Flynn and the Winters team

Winters Home Services, an award-winning provider of plumbing, heating and cooling services to the greater Boston area, outlines the benefits of Ductless Air Conditioning and offers homeowners a special “buy back” discount for their window air conditioning units when they install a ductless cooling system.

“Ductless cooling systems are energy efficient and much more effective at cooling the home than window units. They may be installed in any home, regardless of whether there is existing ductwork. And, the systems are extremely quiet,” explained Tim Flynn, owner.

Advantages of ductless cooling systems include allergen filtration, energy efficiency, ease of installation, convenience and superior home comfort.

Winters Home Services has announced a special “buy back” program, where essentially, the company gives the homeowner a $25 discount towards new ductless cooling installation for every old window air conditioning unit no longer needed.

Flynn continued, “Once a homeowner has experienced the superior performance of a ductless cooling system, they will never again use a window unit. A ductless cooling system is about half the cost of a central air system and best of all, can be installed in a day.”

Winters Home Services installs Mitsubishi, Fujitsu and Samsung ductless cooling systems. Single-zone ductless cooling systems are ideal for homes without ductwork, and provide individual comfort control wherever needed, such as in home offices, bedrooms and more. Each unit connects to a compact outdoor condensing unit. With Multi-zone ductless cooling systems, individual air handling units located in within a home’s zone (of several rooms) can be connected to a single outdoor condensing unit.

To arrange a ductless cooling consultation, contact Winters Homes Services at 866-482-7586.

Falconi Energy Announces Ductless Cooling Systems

June 5, 2015 //  by admin

Falconi_vertical logo red smallThere’s a lot to be said for everyday comfort. During the summer, many of us enjoy an air-conditioned commute to a temperature-controlled workplace and, lunch at an air-conditioned restaurant. Yet, at the day’s end, we go home to a stifling house.

Falconi Energy, a leading supplier of premium heating oil and a full-service heating and cooling company based in Southborough, MA offers a “cool” solution for homeowners who have old, inefficient window air conditioner units and those who do not have central air or the ducted system required for it.

Falconi Energy provides brand leader Mini-Split Ductless Cooling Systems that are energy efficient and highly effective. Instead of central air’s bulky and costly ducts and indoor evaporator unit, a ductless cooling system utilizes thin copper tubing, and the compressor and condenser units are located outside the home.

At half the cost of a central air system and noticeably quieter than inefficient, conventional window units, mini-split ductless cooling systems are the future of home comfort. Advantages include energy cost-savings, same-day installation, and room-by-room zoned comfort. Ductless cooling systems also improve indoor air quality with a multi-stage filtration system that reduces dust, pollen and allergens in the home.

Recycle Old Window A/C Units

Catering to the homeowner’s unique cooling requirements, Falconi Energy provides custom installation of single zone or multi-zone wall, floor, and ceiling mounted units. Mini-Split Ductless Cooling Systems are affordable and begin at $3,500 installed. The company offers 0 percent loan programs for qualified customers to help with the transition to a new ductless cooling system. Falconi Energy will also recycle old window air conditioner units, and encourages “trade-in” of window units at the time of ductless system installation.

“New technology makes it simple to have the same comfort as a central air system at a fraction of the cost,” explained Jim Falconi, president. “Not only that, but unlike central air, split ductless cooling systems do not use harsh coolant so they are better for the environment. Homeowners now have an environmentally-friendly, energy efficient, cost-effective (and quiet) way to cool their homes.”

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump Rebate

Homeowners who opt for a Ductless Mini-Split cooling unit with heat pump (which provides cooling and heating for year-round comfort) may be able to take advantage of additional savings by way of a COOL SMART rebate. To learn more about the Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pump rebate and download a brochure and application, visit www.masssave.com/residential/heating-and-cooling.

Winters Company Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Advises Homeowners to Prep for Heating Season Now

November 11, 2010 //  by admin

Tim Flynn, president of Winters Company

Summertime provides an opportunity for birds, squirrels and raccoons to nest in the chimney while the heating system is not in use. Before the heating season kicks into gear, get your chimney and heating system in shape. Winters Company Plumbing, Heating & Cooling of Cambridge, recommends hiring a heating professional to perform a full inspection on your home’s heating system to ensure that it is in good working order and safe to turn up the heat. The inspection should include:

A chimney inspection. Bird and animal nests in the chimney cause a blockage that could back harmful Carbon Monoxide into your home. (A simple test of looking up your chimney with a mirror will answer the question.)

A test of your heating systems’ efficiency. Testing should be performed before and after the cleaning. At Winters, our testing equipment produces a cash register type receipt before and after your cleaning, you will see the difference on paper and in your heating bill. If your system is greater than 15 years old you will not see a difference in efficiency. Your cleaning is more for safety than efficiency.

A Carbon Monoxide (CO2 ) check. A heating professional can run a boiler cleaning test to test the amount of CO2 from your heating system before and after a cleaning. A good cleaning gets into the sections of a heating boiler.

A visual inspection of the sections and piping for leaks. It’s important that your heating professional look for any evidence of a problem before it happens. A heating professional’s job is to consult with you to help you make the right decision if there is a problem.

“Most importantly, share what you know with your heating professional. Are your heating bills increasing? Is one room cooler than another? What you deem an insignificant detail, may be the insight that indicates a problem that your heating professional needs to know about,” noted Tim Flynn, president of Winters Company.

“The engine of your home is your heating system. There are 285 heating days in season so it’s imperative to have your system checked and tuned-up to keep it operating at optimal capacity while ensuring there are no problems such as CO2 that could threaten the safety of the people in the home,” said Flynn.
