From Blank Wall to Work of Art – Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café Seeks Artists for Store Mural

Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café, a fast-casual dining establishment with four locations in Connecticut, is offering an opportunity to local artists to turn a prominent wall at their renovated Manchester café into a work of art.

After a complete remodel earlier this year, Between Rounds Manchester café, located at 1540A Pleasant Valley Road, has a whole new look and feel. Now, the store’s founders would like to put the finishing touches on their interior design with a breathtaking mural depicting historical buildings, monuments, landscapes, events and more – relevant to the town of Manchester.

The mural wall in the café measures approximately 10’ high by 20’ long. Artist(s) credit will be featured on the wall. Between Rounds will cover the cost of supplies for the mural.

Local artists and art students from Manchester Community College or any of the town’s high schools are encouraged to submit a quality rendering of their vision for the mural, along with details about the medium to be used (oil, acrylic paint, etc.). The mural may be completed by an individual artist or collectively, for example, by a class of art students.

“This is an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talent on a very large canvas, and be seen by patrons from the Manchester community and beyond,” explained Jerry Puiia, co-founder of Between Rounds.

Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café Begins Manchester Store Renovation February 11th

Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café, a growing fast casual dining establishment and wholesale bagel supplier, has announced that plans are in place for their Manchester store’s complete renovation.

Between Rounds Manchester store, which opened in 1994, has become somewhat of a landmark as it is the only original tenant of the Plaza at Buckland Hills. Located at 1540A Pleasant Valley Road, Between Rounds Manchester will close for remodeling on February 11, 2018 for two weeks.

During the temporary construction shut-down, the bakery café and bagel shop encourages customers to visit Between Rounds locations nearby in the Vernon Circle Shopping Center, 243 Hartford Turnpike and the South Windsor store at 19 John Fitch Boulevard, Route 5.

Between Rounds Manchester renovation promises a bright, cheery and well-lit store with the latest in energy efficient LED lighting. Flooring will be replaced with high quality flooring products and along with innovative ceiling and wall treatments, will modernize the look while being easy to clean and maintain. New furnishings, including tables, chairs and a bench seat that accommodates seating for large groups, will further enhance patrons’ comfort. Sleek retail giftware displays will also be incorporated into the design and showcase Between Rounds’ unique and expanded line of giftware.

The Manchester store’s floor plan is also getting a makeover. Customers will enjoy quicker service from a new efficient layout that integrates “grab-n-go” convenience allowing for new and delicious choices of salads, desserts, drinks and more. Expanded floor space will provide room for additional equipment and enhance employee operations, which will speed up customer flow.

The contractor for the renovation is Image Plus, led by Darrell Chaloult and based in Ashford, CT.

Between Rounds has been in business for more than two decades and is the brainchild of brothers Jerry and Joe Puiia, who are Staten Island, NY natives.

Jerry Puiia, co-founder of Between Rounds explained, “We are very excited about our Manchester renovation. It will be similar in scope to the 2016 renovation of our Vernon store, which we took down to bare bones and redesigned from floor to ceiling.”

Ultimately, the Manchester store will resemble the Vernon store in many ways and customers are sure to enjoy the upscale décor and a more comfortable atmosphere overall.

Puiia continued, “We received very positive feedback after our Vernon renovation and are striving for a similar harmony and visual consistency in Manchester’s redesign.”

The Manchester staff will temporarily work in the Vernon store during the renovation, and all catering orders will be satisfied via the Vernon and South Windsor stores.

Between Rounds will be hiring additional staff after the renovation.

In her new role as full time baker, Ball will be responsible for baking bagels, rolls, breads and a variety of pastries and desserts on a daily basis for Between Rounds located in the Vernon Circle Shopping Center.

Ball has a passion for the food industry and decades of experience. After graduating from Manchester High School, she completed a one-year cooking and baking program at Manchester Community College. Over the years she has held a number of different roles in the supermarket, baking and restaurant sectors, which included eight years as wait staff at Frank’s Restaurant in Hartford. She then embarked on a 28-year career in the food vending industry, working for Food Pro in South Windsor for 21 years, followed by Quality Foods in Bristol for seven years where she serviced food, snack, coffee and soda vending machines for hospitals, nursing homes and other organizations throughout her Western Massachusetts route.

“Karen is a talented baker with a tremendous amount of knowledge and experience in the food industry. We are delighted to welcome her to our team,” said Jerry Puiia, co-owner of the franchise.

Between Rounds Bakery Sandwich Café has been supplying their signature bagels to independent grocers throughout Connecticut and has recently contracted with Ted’s Supermarket to supply Between Rounds signature bagels to the store’s gourmet bakery department.

Family-owned Between Rounds has been in business for more than two decades and is the brainchild of the Puiia brothers, who are Staten Island, NY natives. Ted’s Supermarket opened its doors to Hebron and the surrounding communities in 1973. Ted Armata with his two sons, Todge and David have grown the business into a cornerstone of the community. Todge and David are the third generation to be in the food business (their grandfather had owned a store in Holyoke, MA in 1932). The fourth generation is now working at Ted’s – Todge’s daughter Jennifer works in customer service and David’s son Steven is a baker in their bakery department.

Puiia met Todge Armata while helping his daughter run the fundraising Hot Dog Stand at Ted’s Supermarket. Established by Ted’s founder, the Hot Dog Stand is a unique local fundraiser that enables individuals to sell hot dogs with all the fixings (at no cost to the individual) for a day and collect 100 percent of the proceeds for their charitable cause. The popular Hot Dog Stand fundraiser has been operating for close to a decade and is just one of the ways that Ted’s gives back to the community.

“Some business alliances are formed on the golf course, but in this case, it all began at Ted’s famous Hot Dog Stand,” noted Puiia. “Between Rounds is proud to partner with other family-owned businesses that do so much for their community such as Ted’s Supermarket.”

Jarvis, a Manchester resident, has more than a decade of experience working in the quick service restaurant industry. Jarvis began working full-time at Between Rounds Manchester in January as crewmember prior to her promotion to manager. In her new role, she will oversee operations, which include baking, custom catering, training employees, banking and more.

Previous to Between Rounds, Jarvis had worked for Dunkin Donuts in Vernon. She started out at the counter in 1999 and over the years, earned promotions to shift leader, assistant manager and manager and was recognized with a number of achievement and longevity awards.

“At Between Rounds, we are committed to the growth and advancement of our team members. Julie has a tremendous amount of experience and is a great fit for our team. She’ll easily and efficiently navigate the complex issues of managing our busy Manchester restaurant,” said Jerry Puiia, co-owner of the franchise.
