Preventing electrical bearing damage – Emerson Bearing Boston offers a solution.

February 27, 2020 //  by admin

When a bearing is exposed to an electric current, it can cause electrical bearing damage, which manifests as pits and grooves on the bearings’ surface. This creates an uneven surface texture causing additional noise, vibration, and (eventually) complete failure. It is a costly problem, often leading to unnecessary downtime and expensive repairs or upgrades.

Railroads are one application in particular where electrical current causing pitting is a major cause of bearing failure. Other applications where extra bearing protection is necessary include motors with variable frequency drives (VFDs), pump motors, HVAC units, refrigeration, compressors, generators and data centers.

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, offers a solution for preventing electrical bearing damage – replacing standard bearings with ceramic hybrid ball bearings.

Although not all bearings are damaged by an electrical current and not all circuits cause bearing damage, the problem typically occurs when equipment is grounded incorrectly or when bearings are used in AC/DC motors with VFDs.

Ceramic Hybrid Bearing Benefits

Ceramic hybrid bearings consist of ceramic rolling balls and an inner and outer steel race. Ceramic bearings provide a level of insulation that eliminates electric arcing and fluting. They also feature double shielding and non-conductive properties and low temperature rise under extreme operating conditions. For example, Nachi ceramic hybrid ball bearings are one of the most durable replacements for traditional steel bearings. They are dimensionally interchangeable with most bearings, which eliminates the need for special modifications during the installation process, facilitates the replacement process, and makes them a more cost-effective replacement option.

“Apart from their tremendous insulating properties, there are many other advantages to switching to ceramic hybrid ball bearings – such as safer operation in extreme conditions, a wider range of speed capabilities and longer bearing life span,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing Boston.

He continued, “Bearings can be damaged by electrical current, as well as many other environmental and operational factors. Understanding these factors and the risks they possess is the best way to prevent costly repairs, downtime, or operator injuries associated with damaged or failed components.”

For more information about Emerson Bearing’s ceramic hybrid bearings and other products, visit EmersonBearing.com.

Emerson Bearing Boston Charges Ahead with Special Bearings for Electric Motors, MRIs

July 26, 2017 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, announces an expanded line of bearings for electric motors, medical equipment such as magnetic resonance imagers (MRIs) and other “high voltage” applications.

Bearings for Electrically Charged, Severe Environments

Electrical current can be incredibly damaging to metal components. For bearings, it can cause a wide range of problems, including fluting in the races, pitting of the ball bearings, and degradation of lubrication. Electric motors of all kinds, electric traction motors in railroad applications, and medical equipment such as MRIs, for instance, all involve high-stress environments with a great deal of electrical activity.

Emerson Bearing offers ceramic bearings, as well as ceramic insulated metal bearings, which are ideal for highly electrically charged applications. Ceramic materials, with a few rare exceptions, are very poor conductors of electricity; although they can accept large voltages, they are able to dissipate that electricity extremely effectively. The passing electricity causes little to no degradation of the bearings.

In addition to electrically charged environments, Emerson Bearing provides bearings for other severe environments, such as corrosive and high temperature environments.

“In general, standard AISI 52100 bearings are unable to withstand electrically Charged and other severe environments, so special materials are often needed to produce rolling components,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing. ” For these circumstances, AISI 304, AISI 440, AISI 630, titanium, ceramic, and grease-free bearings may be used.”

Emerson Bearing’s sourcing network spans the globe, which enables them to provide a wide selection of harsh-environment bearings that include: ball and roller bearings from GMN, KOYO, and others; cam followers and yoke rollers from Carter, IKO, and others; rod ends from Durbal and FK; oil seals from Garlock, Dichtomatik, and Timkens; mounted units from AMI, IPTCI, and others, roller chains from Daido, Hitachi, and Drives; and bushings from IGUS and Oilite.

Emerson Bearing offers a vast inventory and 24/7 service, which is critical to customers’ operations. For bearing catalogs, infographics, guides and more, visit Emerson Bearing’s comprehensive website at emersonbearing.com.

Emerson Bearing Boston Expands Line of Bearings for Robotic Applications

May 31, 2017 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, has expanded their line of thin section bearings.

Lightweight, versatile, space-saving bearings

Used in a wide range of applications, from medical automation and robotics to high tech – thin section bearings have a compact, lightweight design. They are ideal for various robotic applications including human assist, pick and place, semiconductor, and medical. Since they are often used when space limitations or specific design configurations prevent the use of conventional bearings, thin section bearings allow for versatility in many applications and come in a range of contact angle designs, including radial contact, angular contact, and four-point contact.

Emerson Bearing’s expanded thin section bearing line includes Barden, FAG, IGUS, IKO, INA, GMN, DURBAL, Nachi, NTN, RBC and Torrington brands.

Unlike radial ball bearings, thin section bearings’ cross diameter remains the same regardless of bore size, and as such reduces system costs and streamlines overall design. High-tech applications often require custom bearings with special materials, surface coatings, or lubricants in order to meet specialized machine needs. Thin section bearings can effectively meet these types of application requirements, including very low or uniform torque, high positioning accuracy, corrosion resistance, and compatibility with very clean environments.

“Thin section bearings allow for significant space savings and overall system weight reduction – ideal advantages when designing sophisticated and critical-application products,” explained Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing. “Emerson Bearing is able to provide the appropriate bearings in addition to customization services as needed.”

Emerson Bearing offers a vast inventory and 24/7 service, which is critical to customers’ operations. Among Emerson Bearing’s wide range of clients is a very large manufacturer of robotic and automation equipment that serves the automotive industry, as well as the automation of the complete assembly of flat screen televisions.

Product Engineers Call Upon Emerson Bearing Boston for Bearing Expertise During R&D

March 20, 2013 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, providers of bearing and related products for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets around the globe, is much more than a bearings supplier. The company’s bearing experts often consult with product engineers during product research and development.

Recent design innovations where Emerson Bearing Boston played a key role in the development of specific bearings for robotics and automation in the health care industry include ErgoNurse®, which is a bed repositioning system that enables medical staff to single-handedly reposition patients without manually lifting them. The company also assisted in the development of a custom, thin, air-frame style bearing for a Boston-based manufacturer of prosthetics.

According to Steve Katz, president of Emerson Bearing Boston, “We often have clients come to us with a specific bearing need. Our prosthetic manufacturing client required a control bearing which allowed for replication of the movement of the ankle. We developed a thin section bearing that is very precise and able to endure high loads at low speed, in other words, a bearing that supports a human’s weight and movement.”

Emerson Bearing Boston’s bearing expertise has also been tapped in the design of the system for the spare tire on the back of Humvee and Hummers.

Katz continued, “Our clients are innovators. They are creating products for the next generation and we’re honored to advise them during product development.”

Emerson Bearing Boston Offers On-Site Engineering Seminars

March 15, 2013 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, providers of bearing and related products for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers) and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) markets around the globe, recently announced Engineering Seminars for companies located in the greater Boston area.

Emerson Bearing’s Engineering Seminars are held on-site for a company’s employees. A senior field service engineer from the factory that Emerson Bearing Boston represents will educate staff about bearings and related parts.

Most recently, Emerson Bearing Boston spoke at Schnitzer Northeast in Everett, which is the metals recycling yard, port and regional office of Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc., a leading global metal recycler.

“Our engineering seminars are designed to educate clients about bearings and related parts required for their machinery which manufactures, processes or recycles products,” noted Steve Katz, president.

Bearings often operate in unique performance conditions such as dirty and biohazardous environments, extremely hot/cold temperatures and environments where chemicals, radiation, speed/velocity and size play a major role. Emerson Bearing’s experts educate clients about the factors involved in the smooth operation of bearings and ultimately in the prevention of premature bearing failure.

“A dry dirty environment is typically an environment that generates some kind of dust. A wet dirty environment often involves water or a chemical that emulsifies with the oil (bearing lubricant), which causes the bearing to fail. To give you an example, worn seals on linear bearings that are used in a dirty environment will enable contamination. Even with the best design, lubrication and installation, bearing failure will occur if the operating environment is not taken into consideration,” explained Steve Katz, Emerson Bearing’s president. “Ideally, our engineering seminars will help companies eliminate the guesswork; avoid costly downtime and ensure maximum operational efficiency.”

To arrange an engineering seminar, contact Emerson Bearing Boston at 866-995-8765.
