Staff and Board Members Recognized at Old Colony Elder Services’ Annual Luncheon

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), a private, non-profit Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) located in Brockton that provides valuable programs and services to seniors, their families and caregivers, held their Annual Luncheon last week. Several staff members and Board members were recognized for their years of service and commitment to the agency’s mission.

More than 180 people attended OCES’ Annual Luncheon held at the Shaw’s Center in Brockton. Attendees included Brockton Mayor James Harrington, State Representatives Geraldine Creedon, Christine Canavan, Louis Kafka and Allen McCarthy, and Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz. Michael Festa, Secretary of the Executive Office of Elder Affairs, gave the keynote speech commending staff and volunteers for their dedication and hard work on the behalf of elders and disabled people. He inspired attendees to rise to the challenging times ahead for all those in the human services field.

Staff members recognized for years of service included:

Brockton residents Phyllis Martin (10 years), Marguerite Sheridan (20 years), Paula Smyth (20 years) and Sandra Ivers (20 years); Jane Kamel of North Easton (10 years); Teresa Kourtz of Berkley (10 years); Susan Willis of Kingston (10 years); Sandra Mendes of Easton (15 years); Beverly Ferris of Bridgewater (15 years) and Jill Getchell of Whitman (20 years).

OCES has an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Those Board members serving for 10 years or more were also recognized. They included:

Eva Burton representing Hanson for 24 years; Dolores Kent, Easton, 24 years; Hazel Foley, Kingston, 22 years; Catherine Connors, East Bridgewater, 16 years; Patricia McCarthy, Whitman, 15 years; Marilyn Mansfield, Lakeville, 14 years; Julie Murphy, Carver, 13 years; Muriel Boyce, Kingston, 12 years; Norma Clark, Abington, 12 years; Maryellen Stevens, Halifax, 12 years; Caroline Taylor, Hanover, 12 years; Mary Willis, Pembroke, 12 years; Ted Lang, Middleboro and Member-at-Large, 11 years; Edward Malloy, Stoughton, 11 years; Phyllis Hancock, Brockton, 10 years and Bernadette Hemingway, Carver, with 10 years of service.

“Our volunteers tirelessly dedicate their time and expertise to help elders. We’re very fortunate to have such a terrific Board and great staff who go the distance to not only help elders, but to assist their colleagues and build good relationships with the community in general. They are amazing and certainly deserve recognition,” explained Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of OCES.

Thanksgiving bounty overflows for plumbers.

The thanksgiving table groans under the load of traditional dishes, and tummies growl and gurgle in anticipation when, suddenly, this Norman Rockwell scene of tranquility erupts into chaos with the realization that the groans, growls, and gurgles are actually coming from the drain of the kitchen sink…

Guess who’s coming to dinner? Your friendly neighborhood plumber! John Wood, founder and CEO of Hub Plumbing & Mechanical in South Boston, MA is well acquainted with this familiar Thanksgiving tableau as he girds himself and his crews for the annual Thanksgiving onslaught.

The long Thanksgiving holiday weekend is the busiest time of the year for a plumber, according to the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association. Why? It’s simple explains Wood, “A 1 ½ inch diameter drain can’t be stuffed with the detritus of a Thanksgiving meal without fighting back and literally erupting and overflowing. A garbage disposal can’t handle the overload either and often grinds to a halt. More than once we’ve literally had to cut out eight or nine foot sections of pipe that are packed to the gills with compacted waste.”

Wood’s colorful descriptions of the sights he has seen should serve as fair warning for Thanksgiving revelers. “Imagine the rich smells and colors of a typical Thanksgiving dinner; then imagine all of those foods mixed together, compacted in your drain, ready to burp back up with the addition of a little water…”

Hub Plumbing and Mechanical’s clog busting team is at the ready 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but if you’d like to avoid a Thanksgiving visit, Wood offers some common sense tips.

•    Grease congeals and solidifies, the same way fatty deposits block an artery and cause a heart attack. If you want to avoid a drain attack, pour grease into a tin can and toss the can into the trash after the grease hardens.
•    A garbage disposal isn’t a wood chipper. Turkey bones splinter (that’s why you can’t feed them to your dog), while turkey skin and fibrous vegetable skins can wind around the blade, causing the disposal to come to a screeching halt.
•    Always turn on the water before starting the garbage disposal, and keep it running for a minute after turning off the disposal to move the waste through the pipes.
•    Keep utensils away from the sink if at all possible. There is nothing like a piece of silverware accidentally dropped into a garbage disposal to bring an ear-shattering end to your Thanksgiving festivities.
•    If you don’t have a garbage disposal, the remains of a Thanksgiving feast can present even more perils. Leftover trimmings, including gravy, stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, vegetables, and pie need to be scraped off of plates and deposited into the garbage. Rinsing plates and letting clumps of food slide down the drain is a recipe for disaster as food builds up and compacts, firmly clogging the drain.
•    Also, dishwashers are not garbage disposals. Dishes need to be scraped before they are placed in the dishwasher. Also be careful that the dishwasher isn’t overloaded– glasses break easily and a dishwasher drain clogged with glass is a sure fire way of ensuing that you will be washing dishes by hand all evening!

New Year, New Approach to Dating

Another holiday spent solo while everyone else seems to have a significant other?  Even though you may not have trouble finding a date, has finding a date that turns into a lasting relationship always eluded you?  If so, you are in the same boat as many singles today.  The real question is…How do you turn things around and build a successful relationship?

  • Long-term relationship lagging?  If you are in a long-term relationship that is breaking down due to major life changes or lack of romance, make time to nurture the partnership.  Do not sweep problems under the carpet.  Bring them to the forefront and do not be afraid to confront one another.  Professionals agree that arguing is often the first sign that a bond is improving.  Without this open communication, not only do the issues persist, but feelings eventually go dead and you are left with a lifeless relationship.

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac recognizes Plymouth South freshmen.

Last school year, Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac honored local high school students for their accomplishments inside and outside the classroom with the monthly Driven Student award. This year’s award program kicked off at Plymouth South High School, with Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac throwing a pizza party for sixteen freshman students selected by their teachers for already showing they’ve got it this early in their high school careers.

Among those treated the students to a pizza party, include: Kayla Callanan, Austin Vico, Bri Corsini, Dan Brandt, Sam Gedutis, Josh Desantis, Emily Richard, Nick Monti, Maura Flaherty, Kenna Andrews, Josh Nelson, Chris Cummings, Bhavjit Thiara, Santiago Narino, Jessica Hawker and Liz Embree.

“Being a freshman in high school is not an easy thing. New school, new teachers and the sheer size of the school can be overwhelming. It says something about these students that they have been able to make the transition successfully and that their teachers felt them worthy of the Driven Student award,” said Jeff Tracy, president of Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac.

In addition to the pizza party, students also received Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac hats and shirts. Rick McGue, Tracy’s service manager, held an impromptu trivia session in which students also earned prizes.

“We can’t thank Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac enough for their generosity towards these students. As educators, we try to give recognition as much as possible but it probably doesn’t happen as much as it should. We appreciate Tracy’s Driven Student program because it’s a nice reminder for teachers to take a closer look at the good work our students are doing,” said A.J. Butters, Freshman Academy House Master.

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac’s Driven Student program recognizes Plymouth high school students for their performance and achievements in and out of the classroom. Awarded on a monthly basis, recipients are selected by faculty and advisors at the student’s given school.

Old Colony Elder Services in Desperate Need of Meals on Wheels and Nutrition Volunteers

Many frail and home bound elders throughout the community rely on the Nutrition Program at Old Colony Elder Services, Inc. (OCES) in Brockton, a private, non-profit Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) that provides valuable programs and services to elders, their families and caregivers.

But, the non-profit elder services agency needs more volunteers to help prepare and pack meals and deliver them to residents.

“We are in desperate need of Nutrition volunteers.  Right now we are stretched to the limit, with only a few volunteers trying to cover a number of delivery routes so every elder is ensured a healthy meal every day,” explained Diana DiGiorgi, Executive Director of OCES.

Nutrition volunteers are needed to set up, bag and distribute meals at congregate Nutrition Sites.  Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers are needed to deliver meals to elders throughout the Plymouth county area. Drivers typically deliver 15-20 meals a day, between 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and are reimbursed for mileage.  Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday, yet they may help out for any number of days per week that they
can.

OCES’ Nutrition Program is designed to enhance elders’ quality of life by providing nutritionally sound and satisfying meals. Because the Nutrition Program is primarily federally funded, there is no income-based test; all residents at least 60 years of age and those less than 60 but disabled are eligible.

Anyone who is able to volunteer at a meal site or deliver meals for two hours, at least one to two days a week, please contact the Nutrition Department at OCES at (508) 584-1561.

OCES offers a number of programs to serve seniors, families and caregivers such as Family Caregiver; Caring Homes and Enhanced Adult Family Care; Supportive Housing; Nutrition; Money Management; Protective Services; Home Care and more.
