Tips for Creating Your Dream Home: Tried and True Tile Tips For Your Home

December 10, 2008 //  by admin

Want to make your master bath dazzle with enhanced tile designs, but aren’t sure where to begin? Careful planning and smart spending is important because it can get you the look you want for a price that won’t bust your budget. Let’s face it…renovating your master bathroom or any room is about a lot more than just stone or ceramic, so planning and getting creative with your budget is an important step.

If you’re thinking about replacing the tile in your kitchen or master bath and don’t know where to begin, here’s a little tutorial to help bring you up to speed.

Tile 101: Not all tiles are created equal. Sure, all tile feels hard to the touch, but some types are more durable than others. Tile is rated using a hardness scale, which you can use as a guide in determining how your room usage will affect your chosen tile.

            Tile Hardness Ratings

Group I – Tiles with a hardness rating in the first group are designed to hold up only to light usage. Use these tiles where traffic will be light and consist mostly of bare feet.

Group II – These tiles can stand the wear and tear of normal traffic, however they will not last if placed in entryways.

Group III – Tiles of this hardness rating can generally be used anywhere within the home and withstand a heavy degree of traffic.

Group IV & V – Most likely you will not use these tiles in your home, as they are truly designed for extra-heavy, high-abrasion traffic.

Mosaic stone tile is the latest emerging trend. Available in a multitude of colors, these tiles can range in shapes and sizes, and may contain precious metals or stones. Mosaics fit nicely into both modern and traditional bathroom layouts. Feel free to mix it up by combining sizes, styles and shapes. And – while white stone tile is growing in popularity because of its ability to hide dirt and mildew and create a “clean and sanitary” look – be sure to use gray grout when installing the tile to achieve the best results. There are also several other materials and styles for you to choose from:

–         Brick

–         Cement

–         Ceramic

–         Pavers

–         Porcelain

–         Quarry

–         Saltillo

–         Terra Cotta

–         Terrazzo

The styles and colors you pick usually set the tone for the rest of the room’s accessories and mood so keep this in mind when choosing both color and materials.

Shop Wisely. Consumers with small budgets will be happy to hear that, generally speaking, larger stone tile is less expensive than smaller versions because it is cheaper to manufacture – and obviously that cost savings translates to you through the suggested retail price. The last piece of advice you should heed – plan ahead and make sure to add shipping time for products into your overall remodeling plan. This can be particularly important if you’re hiring an installer to do the work. A week delay in delivery can sometimes mean much more of a delay in the installation if that vendor has a full plate.

Old Colony Elder Services Encourages General Public to “Be a Santa to a Senior” this Holiday Season

December 8, 2008 //  by admin

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), a private, non-profit Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) that serves Plymouth county as well as the towns of Avon, Easton and Stoughton, is encouraging the general public to participate in the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program by providing a
gift to a senior in need.

Old Colony Elder Services, working in conjunction with Home Instead Senior Care, the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program sponsor, has identified approximately 170 isolated elders who otherwise would not receive a gift this holiday season.

Each of these seniors is represented by an ornament with their “wish list” on it.   The wish lists may include items such as postage stamps, clothing, a gift card to a grocery store, candy or other item. The ornaments adorn Christmas trees located at Duval’s Pharmacy at
571 Washington Street in Whitman and Southeast Medical Center on Route 18 in East Bridgewater.

To be a “Santa to a Senior”, simply select an ornament from one of the two trees and purchase a gift that is on that senior’s “wish list”.  Then, bring the gift (unwrapped) along with the ornament, back to the participating location from which the ornament was selected.

All the gifts will be collected by Home Instead Senior Care and a wrapping party will be held on December 16th.  Representatives from Home Instead Senior Care and OCES will help wrap and distribute the gifts to the seniors.

For questions about “Be a Santa to a Senior”, contact Susan Willis, Home Care Program Director at OCES (508) 584-1561.

About Old Colony Elder Services
Incorporated in 1974, Old Colony Elder Services (OCES) is one of 27 private, non-profit Aging Services Access Points (ASAPs) in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

OCES serves elders, their families and caregivers in the towns of Abington, Avon, Bridgewater, Brockton, Carver, Duxbury, East Bridgewater, Easton, Halifax, Hanover, Hanson, Kingston, Lakeville, Marshfield, Middleboro, Pembroke, Plymouth, Plympton, Rockland, Stoughton, Wareham, West Bridgewater and Whitman.

The organization’s mission is to provide services that support the dignity and independence of elders by helping them maximize their quality of life; live safely and in good health; and, prevent
unnecessary or premature institutionalization.

Versai The Wine Bar teams with DirectBuy to help Yorba Linda residents recover from Fire Ravages with an event set for Wednesday, January 14

December 8, 2008 //  by admin

YORBA LINDA, CA…

Robert Sarai, the innovative restaurateur of Fitness Pizza & Grill, and the newly minted Versai the Wine Bar, knows his neighbors need help after suffering losses caused by recent fires that destroyed more than 150 homes in the city.

Teaming up with DirectBuy of Orange County, the versatile Sarai announced plans to host a wine and food event on Wednesday, January 14, at his elegant wine bar to help contribute relief to fire victims. The event will run from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

He states, “We are all affected when disaster strikes, and our impulse is first to help our neighbors and support their rebuilding efforts. We will pull out all stops to make this event delicious, effervescent, and memorable.”

Sarai, a DirectBuy member, was thrilled when Geoff and Ann Rocke, co-owners of the members-only showroom, offered guests at the event the chance to win a free DirectBuy membership. So, in addition to an evening of fabulous food, wine and entertainment, the $85 cost for admission gives each attendee an automatic entry in the drawing for the membership, valued in excess of $5,000.00.

Moreover, Sarai has added that 50 percent of all proceeds for the event be donated to victims of the fires. Guests can sample wines from the Old and New worlds with plenty to eat. These dishes include a cheese-fruit platter, beef and chicken kabob sauté, coconut shrimp, crab cakes, kobe beef lobster and spinach ravioli, finished with an assortment of desserts. “You can be assured that no one participating in this fundraiser will go away hungry,” Sarai asserts.

“Robert is a fine person, makes delicious food, pours and sells a variety of wines, and is an outstanding member of the business community in Yorba Linda.  I am also proud he is a happy member of DirectBuy,” Rocke says. “We live in a great place, and when something as unpredictable as wild fires attacks our community, we’ve got to step up to help.”

Guests who attend this event can sip and stock up on wine for gift giving and entertaining. In addition to the food and wine, guests will mingle with live sensational music. “We live in interesting times, we want to help our neighbors directly and bring a little happiness into the situation,” Rocke says.

Rocke adds he intends to stock up on wines himself.  “Great selection and value—that’s what makes Versai the Wine Bar so appealing. We look forward to supporting our neighbors and this is more than fine food and wine pairings—it is a pair of local businesses reaching out.”

As you walk into Versai the Wine Bar you will feel as though you’ve journeyed to Europe and other ports of California with just the right level of cozy intimacy. Versai is draped with twinkling grape vines and elegantly lit candle chandeliers add to the enchantment as you explore a wall to wall wooded cherry bar with custom vintage architectural design. This ambience sets the stage for a memorable experience. This upscale chateau tasting room is committed to excellent hospitality always eager to please and delight its guests.

Law Enforcement Security Consulting Announces New Homeland Security Division

December 8, 2008 //  by admin

Law Enforcement Security Consulting (LESC), headquartered in North Attleboro and serving communities, institutions and private enterprise throughout New England, has recently established a Homeland Security Division.

All programs are led by Fred T. Leland, the company’s director who is also an active Lieutenant with the Walpole Police Department and a former U.S. Marine with more than 28 years of experience teaching law enforcement and security professionals. His article “Recognizing the Signs and Signals of Crime and Danger” was recently published in Homeland Security Report 188, which is an information source for law enforcement, intelligence, security and emergency management personnel.

The new division is designed specifically to train law enforcement and security professionals to identify threats and develop strategies and tactics needed to detect, prevent, avoid, defuse and resolve conflict with regard to Homeland Security. Trainees learn to recognize the signs and signals of crime and danger as well as the appropriate response and action to take.

Among the programs offered through the Homeland Security division are:

Threat Assessment, which utilizes the Boyd Cycle to teach risk assessment along with how to use observation, orientation, decision and action to minimize risk.

Terrorism Awareness trains law enforcement and security personnel how to recognize indicators of terrorism and criminal extremism; gather meaningful intelligence and how to follow-up.

Response to Suicide and/or Terrorist Bombings trains personnel in the warning signs/key indicators of an impending attack as well as the proper and safe steps to minimize injuries and fatalities.

Critical Incident Management teaches all about the Incident Command System to improve tactical response to emergencies.

Use of Force teaches how to control rapidly-changing circumstances during a threatening encounter through the effective application of force.

“Our primary focus is on developing law enforcement and security personnel’s situational awareness, threat assessment and decision making abilities under pressure. It is imperative that they know how to identify, control and defuse violent or dangerous situations,” noted Leland.

Lift & Care Systems breaks barriers with introduction of Bruno Electra-Ride Elite stair lift for persons with restricted mobility.

December 5, 2008 //  by admin

DATELINE:  LAKEVILLE, MA…
Keeping up with the latest technology is an ongoing challenge. For Dave Austin, Founder and President of Lift & Care Systems in Lakeville, MA, keeping up with the latest technology is an ongoing mission to better serve the diverse needs of persons with disabilities.

Lift & Care Systems’ introduction of the newly redesigned Bruno Electra-Ride Elite stair lift enhances that goal by continuing to break barriers for persons with restricted mobility. Many times the aesthetics of home mobility devices seem to be overlooked. The latest model of the Bruno Electra-Ride Elite stair lift reverses that trend with superior aesthetics that range from streamlined, ultra-compact design and performance, to a choice of seven different types of upholstery.

Notes Austin “Many people who experience restricted mobility actually use only a portion of their home, or even consider moving out of their home, because of the obstacle that stairs present. Understandably, they are sometimes reluctant to consider adding what they think will be a clunky unsightly stair lift that will detract from the beauty and comfort of their home. This new model will certainly change that perception.”

Style, comfort, and safety have been integrated in the redesign of the Bruno Electra-Ride Elite stair lift. Enhancements include an improved clamping and rail design for remarkable stability utilizing a rail that hides all mechanical components and ensures that installation will not require modification to the staircase. The vertical, straight rail installs to within 6 inches of the wall so that family members and guests will have no problem using the stairs. The use of two wireless call/send controls also eliminates the need for wires along the wall.

A new, offset swivel seat, makes entry and exit safe and easy, even for wheelchair users. The lift has a 400 lb. weight capacity with a generous seat size that adjusts from 17.75 inches to 21.75 inches between the flip up armrests. The footrest and carriage safety sensors also safely stop the lift if even the slightest obstacle is in the way.

Ongoing performance has also been improved with audio and visual coded-diagnostics that save time when maintenance or service is needed. Two 12-volt batteries, continuously powered from any household outlet, ensure dependable performance, even during power outages.

In addition to the redesigned Bruno Electra-Ride Elite stair lift, Lift & Care Systems offers a range of stair lifts made by Bruno Independent Living Aids, North America’s leading manufacturer of stair lifts, including customized curved rail stair lifts and stair lifts specifically designed for outdoor use, as well as straight rail systems.

The SureHands system of ceiling mounted lifts enables thousands of users with disabilities to have easier access to the basics of bed, bath, or toilet. It is also amazingly able to assist persons with disabilities with everyday tasks such as changing clothes, standing and ambulating, or even taking a swim or mounting a horse.

SureHands patient lift systems are so remarkable that they have been featured on two episodes of ABC-TV’s “Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition.” During these episodes a SureHands lift & care system was installed to help make a home ADA compliant and enable the resident to transfer and accomplish his normal activities for daily living. This multi-directional SureHands system was mounted to the ceiling connecting the bedroom to the bath, allowing the resident greater mobility, free of floor based obstacles.
