Take Stock of Aging Parents’ Health – Right At Home Offers 5-Minute Online Assessment Tool

The holiday visits are behind us and now it’s time to review and take stock. Those of us with aging parents should heed the signs that indicate that an aging loved one may be declining, jeopardizing their safety and well-being at home. Callahan lists the 10 signs to watch for in your aging loved one that are cause for concern:

1.Weight loss
2.Not maintaining his/her personal appearance and hygiene

4.Not eating nutritious meals or not eating at all
5.Food in the refrigerator or on the shelves that is past its expiration date or molding
6.Not maintaining the home by doing chores such as cleaning bathrooms, washing floors or regular vacuuming
7.Not paying bills – unpaid or unopened piles of bills are a red flag
8.Not taking proper care of a pet
9.Avoiding or having difficulty ascending/descending steps
10.Limiting contact with or lacking an interest in the outside world

According to Callahan, “If you believe that your loved one may be having difficulty, you need to address it with your loved one and other close family members. Your aging loved one may be in need of a number of services – from companionship to personal care and homemaking.”

Old Colony Elder Services Appoints Kathleen Ward as Caregiver Advisor

Kathleen Ward, LPN has recently been appointed as Caregiver Advisor at Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the Brockton based regional elder services agency serving seniors, their families and caregivers throughout greater Brockton and Plymouth county.

In her new position as Caregiver Advisor in the Family Caregiver Support Program at OCES, Ms. Ward will conduct home visits with elders and their caregivers to assess caregivers’ support needs. She will provide one-on-one counseling and offer guidance should any additional resources be required, thereby ensuring that caregivers are taking care of themselves as well as elders.

Ms. Ward is a Licensed Practical Nurse and holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Services and Counseling Psychology from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. She has more than 20 years of nursing experience. Most recently, she worked as a per diem nurse at The Cedars, an assisted living community in North Dartmouth. She has also served as a private hospice nurse. Prior to that, she was an operating room and surgical nurse at Morton Hospital in Taunton, MA for 15 years.

Ms. Ward is a past recipient of the “Tutor of the Year” award presented by the Taunton Literacy Council, where she was recognized for her volunteer work in the literacy program. She is a resident of Taunton.

OCES staff hold food drive for The Charity Guild

This holiday season, the staff at Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the Brockton based regional elder services agency serving seniors, their families and caregivers throughout greater Brockton and Plymouth county, has gone above and beyond to help those in need. The agency collected several large boxes of canned food donations from their staff during their Holiday Party held last week.

The canned food drive donations were delivered to The Charity Guild food pantry and thrift shop located on Main Street in Brockton.

Dental Insurance 101. What you don’t know could you hurt you and your wallet.

When it comes to dental insurance, most people want it and are glad to have it. When it’s time to actually use the insurance on something other than a routine cleaning–like an unexpected filling, a chipped tooth there or worse, a root canal or crown—it’s a little too late. Doing a little research into your insurance benefit before you really need is a wise move as the out-of-pocket costs resulting from not having a good plan or understanding what your particular plan covers can really add up.

“Most dental plans cover basic examinations and cleanings, but some plans may not cover things you might assume to be routine,” said Dr. Richard Wolfert, DMD, who conducts his dental practice at 1121 Main Street in South Weymouth. “That’s why the expertise of the staff and communication with the insurance company is so vital. I’ve found that most misunderstandings with patients are the result of the patient’s belief that their insurance will or should pay for more than it will.”

Most dental insurance companies classify dental procedures in three categories:

  • Preventative – This typically includes routine cleanings and examinations as preventative dental care, however, X-rays, sealants and fluoride can be deemed as preventative or basic, depending upon the specific insurance carrier.
  • Basic or Restorative – This usually consists of fillings and simple extractions. Root canals can be considered basic or major depending on the plan (the majority of dental plans list root canals as basic).
  • Major – Usually includes crowns, bridges, dentures, partials, surgical extractions and dental implants. But not always.

While preventative and basic procedures are fairly straightforward, some dental plans do have some requirements, like “waiting periods” for major work. For example, if you need a crown and the policy has a 12-month or longer waiting period, you WILL NOT receive reimbursement for that procedure until you’ve been enrolled in the plan for at least one year. That means, if you decide to move ahead on getting that procedure done before the waiting period has been met, you will be responsible for the entire cost.

Some additional fine print to be on the lookout for: “missing tooth” clauses or a “replacement” clause. Many plans include at least one of these clauses, but most have both.

A missing tooth clause allows the insurance company not to pay for the replacement of a tooth that was missing before the policy was in effect. A replacement clause is similar. The insurance company won’t reimburse you for such procedures as crowns, dentures, partials or bridges until a specified time limit has passed. That time period could be five to 10 years.

“Another critical thing to know about your plan is the maximum amount of annual coverage you’re allowed. Typically it’s around $1500 but many plans have a deductible that needs to be met before the benefit is allowed to be paid out,” said Wolfert. “Sometimes, in order to take advantage of your dental benefit, you need to play the insurance ‘game’. If you know you need a certain procedure that’s going to be particularly expensive you can plan to do a part of the procedure at the end of one year, taking advantage of that maximum, and then finish the procedure the next year when you have more benefit at your disposal.”

Added Wolfert, “This does not work with all procedures because you may not be able to split the work into two or three phases, but some may.”

ARC of Greater Plymouth’s Holiday Party a Great Success

More than 60 families attended the recent Children’s Holiday Party for members of ARC of Greater Plymouth. The event, which was sponsored by Damon, Topham & Company, the CPA firm and 2011 FIVE STAR Wealth Managers based in Marshfield, was held at the Tavern on the Green in Marshfield.

This is the 12th consecutive year that Damon, Topham & Company has sponsored this fun-filled event for children nine years of age, their siblings and parents/caregivers.

The children enjoyed a wonderful meal and gifts presented to them by Santa. Jon Manning from the Marshfield Kiwanis club volunteered as Santa for the evening. After dinner, Ryan Racette, otherwise known as “Big Ryan”, a local Plymouth storyteller, entertained the children with his charming dog puppets, songs and dances. For the third consecutive year, Borders book store in Kingston donated books to be given to the children as well.

According to Jill O’Reilly, Community Support Coordinator at ARC, “The ARC party is a safe environment for the children and a setting where they can be themselves. We heard parents comment on how this year’s party was one of the best ones we’ve held.”

New Year, New Resolution for Hiring Managers: Improve Interview Techniques to Reduce Cost

Job interviews can be stressful on new hire candidates, but they also put pressure on the hiring manager. The cost of making a “bad hire” decision incurs the obvious expenses of salary and benefits, but there are also hidden costs. Time invested in training and lost time in finding the right candidate (which can takes months) cannot be recouped.

Many Human Resource Managers begin with the resumé and ask questions to determine what the skill set may have been for jobs listed on the resumé. Carefully listening to the answers may indicate a situation where the candidate has inflated the resumé or listed positions in the background that have been glamorized. Asking closed ended questions that have yes or no responses may not ferret these errors out, and it may not be assumed that these omissions will be picked up in a background check.

There are some simple, logical tips that can be used during a job interview to discern the credibility of the candidate. Here are the Top 5:

1. Ask open ended questions. Follow up with questions that will shed light on areas where there may be inconsistencies.

2. Look for eye contact. When applicants stretch the truth, they typically break eye contact or look away.

3. Nervous twitches or tics may give away the false answers. Switching crossed legs, leg shaking, toe tapping, finger drumming… are all indications that the candidate is uncomfortable. Looking into this discomfort may reveal areas of potential deception.

4. Evaluate the candidate’s handshake. It may seem trivial, but a firm and direct handshake are important. A limp or moist handshake are giveaways that the candidate may be insecure with their presentation to you.

5. Obvious factors such as chewing gum or inappropriate attire during an interview are tip-offs that the candidate does not take the position seriously. Unless you want to have ongoing problems with lateness or unprofessional representation, you may want to skip these candidates.

South Shore Skin Center and Spa Raises $15K for skin cancer prevention non-profit

More than 75 attended the recent “Sunbeams and Snowflakes” Day of Beauty and Open House fundraiser held last week at South Shore Skin Center and Spa in Plymouth to benefit the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation (CMPF).

A total of $15,000 was raised for CMPF. South Shore Skin Center and Spa personnel generously donated their services for the event. Funds were raised from aesthetic treatments, product sales, a silent auction, raffles and individual donations. The funds will support CMPF’s innovative school-based program, “SunAWARE”, which is delivered free of charge to children from kindergarten through twelfth grade in Massachusetts schools.

Representatives from CMPF were on hand throughout the day to provide information about the foundation’s mission and program to protect children from skin cancer. Guests were able to shop for luxurious holiday Spa gifts and take advantage of amazing “deals” through the silent auction. Raffle prizes were also awarded.

“We had a terrific turnout. We’re so grateful for the generous support of everyone who attended and the providers at South Shore Skin Center and Spa,” noted Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, Director of CMPF. “The funds raised are essential to the growth and continuity of our foundation’s SunAWARE educational program.”

WAITSFIELD, VERMONT… 

Effective January 1, 2012, Waitsfield, Vermont-based Resort Maps®, creator of more than 100 hand-drawn travel maps across the United States, Canada, England, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico, will officially change its name to Discovery Map International, Inc. The name change comes two months after acquiring Discovery Map International, LLC of La Conner Washington in October.

“Obviously, there were a number of things we loved about Discovery Map® to acquire the company. Most appealing, of course, was the acquisition would give us a coast-to-coast presence since most of their maps are on the west coast and most of ours are east of the Mississippi,” said Peter Hans, CEO of Resort Maps Franchise, Inc. “But I’ve got to admit, it was always in the back of my mind that we would assume the name Discovery Map® because it just gets down to essence of what we do—helping travelers and locals alike discover great places to eat, shop, stay and play.”

Discovery Map International, Inc will carry on Resort Maps® practice of creating colorful, hand-drawn maps of towns and cities, featuring its advertisers–restaurants, accommodations, retail shops, real estate and other services. The maps will also continue showcasing local sites and attractions and be available online and through multiple media outlets, such as Facebook and an IPhone application.

Under the Discovery Map International, Inc name, the company has 90 independent owners in 150 markets, in 33 states and four countries. In the first year of joint operation, the total circulation of the Discovery Map® maps will top 25 million.

“With the merger and the name change, you might say we have a bit more to celebrate this New Year and a lot of work to do in the coming year,” added Hans. “Still, it’s a challenge we welcome in growing and building the new Discovery Map® brand.”
