Old Colony Elder Services Receives Grant Renewals for Emergency Funds

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, has announced the renewal of two grants for their Emergency Funds.

The George E. Curtis Charitable Trust (Curtis Trust) has generously renewed a $23,000 grant for OCES’ Emergency Funds. The mission of the Curtis Trust is to assist low-income older adults aged 60+to remain in their homes and to experience an improved quality of life.

OCES also received a renewal of the “Little Necessities” Grant of $5,313. For the past 16 years, Mass Home Care has been managing the selection of recipients from a private trust fund that pays for “little necessities” that help seniors remain in their home independently. Mass Home Care carries out the program by utilizing non-profit agencies such as OCES.

These funds are specifically intended to meet the needs of at-risk low-income older adults and individuals with disabilities who are in a crisis or emergency circumstance that threatens their health and/or living situation. These Emergency Funds are OCES’ primary resource available to assist with these needs.

Making a critical difference in the lives of the consumers that are served, OCES’ Emergency Funds support dozens of individuals throughout the year faced with unforeseen emergency events, answering urgent needs such as filling an empty fuel tank, repairing a broken furnace, or providing life-sustaining medications.

“All too frequently, at-risk older adults encounter problems that can jeopardize their ability to maintain independence, dignity and well-being,” explained Nicole Long, CEO of OCES. “We are very grateful for the Curtis Trust and Little Necessities grants as they will enable us to continue to help people in crisis situations who would have no other means of assistance.”

Overwhelmed? Isolated? Caring for the Caregiver Support Group meets Tuesday, November 14 at North River Home Care, Norwell.

North River Home Care announces the launch of a monthly “Caregiver Support Group”. The group will serve as a resource for families, caregivers and the greater South Shore community. The first meeting is set for Tuesday, November 14, 5:30 p.m.  Moving forward the group will meet on the second Tuesday of every month at 5:30 p.m.

The “Caregiver Support Group” will meet at the offices of North River Home Care at 275 Longwater Drive, Norwell in Assinippi Industrial Park.  Light refreshments will be available.

The support group focuses on caregivers of a loved one with memory impairment.  There are many terms for this memory loss such as dementia, Alzheimer’s or Mild Cognitive Impairment, but they all bring on an emotional journey for the caregiver.  The group will help guard participants along this path as they care for a loved one with memory loss.

Nadine Shweiri RN will lead the Support Group.  Nadine is the Independent Living Director at Fairing Way campus located within Union Point in South Weymouth, MA which offers both Independent living, short term rehab and nursing home care.

Nadine brings over twenty years’ experience in caregiving to the senior industry.  For the past several years, Nadine’s career path has focused exclusively on senior living for older adults with dementia. She works with staff, seniors with dementia and their families and caregivers to develop tools to improve communication and maximize quality of life.

There are many worries and fears when caring for a loved one with memory loss.  The support group is designed to help participants connect with others experiencing the same challenges.

Apollo Safety Reminds Massachusetts Residents of Carbon Monoxide Risks During Fire Prevention Month

October is Fire Prevention Month and Apollo Safety, Inc., providers of gas detection products and services for hospitals, universities, government operations and other organizations throughout New England, reminds residents that now is the perfect time to update aging smoke alarms to Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors, as well as replace the batteries and test existing Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors.

According to Apollo Safety founder John V. Carvalho, III, “You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide, and it can be lethal. Heating equipment, automobiles and generators are a few examples of potential sources of carbon monoxide, a toxic gas which is as significant a safety risk as fire.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), carbon monoxide is created when fuels such as wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, kerosene, methane, and gasoline burn incompletely. And, the number of carbon monoxide incidents continues to rise. In 2003 there were 40,900 incidents, to which that number nearly doubled in 2010.

Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detectors should be situated on every level of the home, and also near sleeping areas in the home.

“Never ignore a carbon monoxide alarm that is sounding in your home,” continued Carvalho. “Even though these alarms are incredibly sensitive and built to alert you as early as possible, high levels of carbon monoxide can cause loss of consciousness in minutes. Time is of the essence. Everyone must leave the premises immediately and call the fire department from outside your home.”

Blocked Vents a Risk 

The Farmers’ Almanac is predicting that the Northeast will have “closer to normal temperatures”, but a very snowy winter. This means outdoor vents (such as dryer, stove, and furnace vents) may become blocked with snow, causing carbon monoxide to back up into the home. Be sure to monitor all vents and keep them clear.

Secondary heat or fuel sources, such as generators and kerosene heaters, often relied upon by homeowners, apartment dwellers and some businesses during storm power outages, pose significant risk for carbon monoxide. For example, when using kerosene heaters, adequate ventilation should be a priority. Keeps doors open, a window open at least a crack and perhaps even the fireplace flue open. Generators should never be used indoors, and should be situated outdoors far from the home’s windows, doors and vents. Additionally, automobiles should never be left running (for example, to “warm up” on cold mornings) in the garage.

Gas detection systems are just as necessary as fire alarm systems. They alarm at the first sign of trouble, but maintenance is key to ensure they are always in working order. Carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced every five years.

Carvalho noted, “Carbon monoxide poisoning can be fatal, but is highly preventable. Detection is key and saves lives. Protect your loved ones by installing and maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors throughout your home.”

OCES Announces Special Thanksgiving Meals at Community Dining Sites in Brockton, Halifax and Kingston

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County and surrounding communities, will offer special Thanksgiving meals at several community dining sites in November.

OCES has planned a delicious Thanksgiving menu featuring roast turkey breast with giblet gravy, whipped potatoes, savory stuffing, cranberry sauce, seasoned peas, carrots and corn medley, with corn bread on the side, and apple pie for dessert.

On Thursday, November 2, 2017 at noon, the Halifax Council on Aging (COA) will offer the Thanksgiving Day Special at the senior center’s community dining site at 506 Plymouth Street, Halifax, MA 02338.

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at noon, the Kingston COA will offer the Thanksgiving Day Special at the senior center, 30 Evergreen Street, Kingston, MA 02364.

On Tuesday, November 21, 2016 at noon, the Brockton COA will offer the Thanksgiving Day Special at the community dining site in the Mary Cruise Kennedy Senior Center, 10 Father Kenney Way, Brockton, MA 02301.

Reservations are required and may be made by calling each town’s COA directly.

Daily Meals at Community Dining Sites

OCES’ community dining sites provide hot, nutritious noontime meals Monday through Friday to adults age 60+ and individuals with disabilities under the age of 60. Meals are planned by a nutritionist and meet one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowance for major nutrients. The meals do not include high sodium foods and no salt is added. Low-fat milk is provided.

“Our community dining sites provide healthy, nutritious and delicious meals to older adults on a daily basis, while also giving them a chance to socialize and enjoy fun activities,” said Nicole Long, CEO. “We invite seniors to gather together and enjoy a special Thanksgiving feast.”

Worcester Private School Relocates to Support More Children with ASD. Open House on October 27

The Center for Applied Behavioral Instruction (CABI), an accredited, private special education day school for students with autism spectrum disorder and challenging behaviors in Central Massachusetts, has relocated to an adjacent building at 345 Greenwood Street, Suite 3 in Worcester, MA.

An Open House at the new location will be held on Friday, October 27, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony with officials from the Worcester Chamber of Commerce and CABI staff will conduct tours of the facility. Attendees will hear testimonials from students and parents and there will be a presentation of yearbooks. Light refreshments will be served.

Expansion and Increased Enrollment

Previously, CABI resided at 345A Greenwood Street, occupying an (approximate) 4,000 square foot space within Behavioral Concepts (BCI), providers of ABA Services for children and young adults with autism.

CABI recently doubled their student enrollment and the new location enables the center to expand and increase capacity. The school is now accepting applications for students ages 6 through 22 who reside in communities within a one-hour radius of Worcester.

CABI was founded in 2013 by the school’s directors, Jeffrey Robinson, Ph. D. and Brian Doyle, Ed.D., BCBA-D, who have more than 60 years of cumulative autism and ABA experience. Drs. Robinson and Doyle utilize a hands-on approach to the operation of the school and education of the students, providing direct supervision of all academic and behavioral instruction developed and implemented by the highly credentialed staff.

“Through CABI, we are able to address the needs of a population of students needing highly specialized instruction by providing the highest quality of individualized educational services,” explained Dr. Robinson, CABI Executive Director. “We are committed to maximizing each student’s potential.”

CABI’s curriculum utilizes the frameworks of Applied Behavior Analysis as the basis for its instruction. The Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks are integrated into their educational approach. Students receive differentiated instruction in math, science, language arts, history and social sciences, the arts and physical education. Students at CABI receive instruction through a variety of modalities.

Classroom teachers are licensed special educators and several of the teachers are also licensed as Board Certificated Behavior Analysists. Each classroom of eight students are clinically supervised by a BCBA. In addition, CABI provides direct service and consultation by appropriately credentialed and state licensed professionals. A Speech and Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, and Registered Nurse are on-site and available to provide IEP services on a daily basis. A licensed Clinical Psychologist and Physical Therapist are available for direct and consultative services on an as needed basis.
