May 11, 2019 //  by admin

At a time when seniors might reap the many benefits of the Internet and technology to keep in touch with grandchildren, classmates and long-time friends, they are often leery of the new electronic landscape. From computers to smartphones to smart speakers, seniors can get overwhelmed.

In response to that concern, Brookdale Quincy Bay located at 99 Brackett Street, Quincy, MA 02169, is hosting a complimentary and informational presentation on “Technology for Seniors”.  Targeted to professionals who work directly in the senior care industry, Kevin Martin of Nerds to Go will explore how to stay safe on the Internet and enjoy some of the key components and resources.

The event is sponsored by Seniors First, an organization that offers educational and objective seminars to the senior community.  The discussion will be moderated by George Downey, founder of Seniors First.

“The Internet offers a boundless amount of useful and interesting information and access to the world,” noted Joan Reid, Business Development Coordinator, Brookdale Quincy Bay.  “Unfortunately technology is also a daunting new landscape to many seniors. This presentation is intended to outline both the  security and scope of technology.”

The free event is scheduled for Thursday, June 13from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will include light refreshments and networking. To reserve, please contact Joan Reid at 857-403-1311.

First Annual Massachusetts Malnutrition Awareness Week – OCES offers Awareness Clinics May 15 & 16

May 6, 2019 //  by admin

Did you know that according to American Journal of Nursing greater than 50 percent of adults age 65 and older are at risk for developing malnutrition? Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County, will be offering free awareness clinics during the first Massachusetts Malnutrition Awareness Week.

May is Older American’s Month, and the spotlight is on nutrition for older adults. Across the commonwealth, 76 malnutrition awareness clinics and events will be conducted between May 13-17, 2019.

Malnutrition is not the same as being underweight and can affect those who are overweight as well. Malnutrition can increase one’s risk of infection, falls, and wounds as well as decrease one’s quality of life.

OCES invites older adults to participate in a free malnutrition awareness clinic. The clinics will be conducted by Barbara Nalen-Cardosa, OCES’ registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN).  During the clinic, the RDN will assess malnutrition risk, provide a nutritious snack, offer healthy diet information, and answer questions.

OCES’ malnutrition awareness clinics will be held at the following sites:

On Wednesday, May 15, 2019, from 10-11 a.m. at Belair Towers, 105 Belair Street, Brockton, MA.

On Thursday, May 16, 2019, from 10-11 a.m. at the Kingston Council on Aging, 30 Evergreen Street, Kingston, MA.

For more information about OCES’ malnutrition awareness clinics, contact OCES at 508-584-1561.

The Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA), Massachusetts’ Elderly Nutrition Program is funded by the Older American’s Act and state funding.  Over nine million meals are provided to approximately 75,000 seniors in order to improve nutrition, reduce hunger, and promote socialization.  Over 7,000 volunteers contribute approximately 450,000 hours yearly.

Emerson Bearing Boston Offers Specialty Steel Bearings for Industrial Environments

May 6, 2019 //  by admin

Emerson Bearing Boston, a bearing company catering to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO) markets around the world, offers specialty steels to provide unmatched bearing performance in a variety of applications.

Emerson Bearing works with countless specialty, or alloy, steels to craft bearings that can meet the demands of nearly any industrial environment.

Enhanced Properties, Superb Performance

Specialty steel bearings have additional alloyed materials that deliver special properties to the final product. Specialty steels are engineered to provide superior performance under specific conditions. For bearings such as roller bearings and ball bearings, specialty steels would be selected versus other bearing materials to deliver properties that can best withstand the operating conditions the bearings will be exposed to.

“Standard bearings are typically fabricated using chrome steel, which can be heat-treated and ground to deliver durability and high load capacity, which allows the bearings to perform well in many different applications,” explained Steve Katz, president. “However, depending on the operating conditions of the ball or roller bearing, other specialty stainless steels may offer better performance.”

The benefits of specialty steels include: High corrosion resistance; targeted resistance to high and/or low temperatures; easily fabricated; dimensional stability and strength; non-magnetic; sterile and hygienic; well-suited for special applications; lighter weight; and grease-free.

Well-Suited for Sensitive Applications

Specialty steel bearings are well-suited for sensitive applications such as those in the chemical industry, severe environments and food and beverage industry. Specialty steels, such as AISI 4440C stainless steel, are used in bearings for food processing because they can be easily cleaned and offer high corrosion resistance while maintaining durability at high and low temperatures. TC2 grease-free bearings may also be used if a lubricant-free product is more suitable for the application.

For bearings used in chemical processing, AISI 304 stainless steel is selected due to its ability to resist acids, such as chlorine gas, dry chlorine, ammonium sulfate, caustic soda, and others. This specialty steel can be used in acidic or alkaline environments.

Specialty steels are well suited for bearings used in severe environments due to the high corrosion resistance, superior stability, high strength, and resistance at high and low temperatures.

With a sourcing network that spans the globe, Emerson Bearing Boston caters to clients in these industries with a wide selection of specialty steel bearings.

Katz continued, “Where standard bearings may fail, specialty steels offer unmatched performance in a variety of applications thanks to their enhanced properties. Our experts can assist in the selection of the right bearing for its specific application and requirements to ensure superior performance and avoid costly pitfalls and downtime.”

For more information, Emerson Bearing’s eBook “Bearings for Use in Severe Environments” is available for download at

“What’s in your Grandma’s Jewelry Box?” Free Needham-based workshop outlines the value of bling.

May 3, 2019 //  by admin

What is that heirloom broach worth?  Or those earrings that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Aimee Berrent, Appraiser and Jewelry Consultant, will lead a free workshop exploring “What’s in your Grandma’s Jewelry Box” on Wednesday, May 22, 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at FirstLight Homecare, 109 – 123 Highland Avenue, Suite 301, Needham, MA  02494 (directly across from Panera Bread and between TD Bank and Petco).

Aimee M. Berrent, owner of A Matter of Brilliance, has been in the jewelry business for over 25 years.  A Graduate Gemologist, Ms. Berrent took courses in appraisals, diamonds, diamond grading, color stones, color stone grading, pearls, and restringing from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in California.  In order to make sure she offers the most accurate and up-to-date appraisals, Aimee is constantly learning about advanced diamond grading and colored stone grading in ongoing education courses.

Knowing what your valuables are worth is always a sensible thing to do, being it your jewelry, watches or sterling silver. This is why it’s important to keep your appraisals up to date, especially given the continuing rise in the gold and gemstone markets.

How much is mom’s diamond brooch worth? Can you share inherited jewelry equitably? Are you giving jewelry as a gift to a family member, or someone else?

This interactive presentation encourages participants to ask questions and provide their own anecdotes.
