“Buried in Treasures” Virtual Workshop Begins August 10th

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), the non-profit agency proudly serving older adults and individuals with disabilities throughout greater Plymouth County, is offering a Buried in Treasures Virtual Workshop – a facilitated self-help series for individuals with hoarding tendencies.

For anyone struggling with clutter, compulsive acquiring, saving, and hoarding, OCES’ Buried in Treasures confidential workshop begins Tuesday, August 10, 2021. Classes meet once a week for 16 weeks. This specific workshop is for individuals working on their own recovery; it is not for friends, family or service providers. However, others are welcome to contact OCES for information and resources.

“Buried in Treasures” is an educational, judgment-free, self-help program facilitated by OCES that will meet virtually from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The registration cost is $250 per workshop and is non-refundable.

Scholarships Available

Limited scholarships are available for the Buried in Treasures Virtual Workshop based on financial need. Scholarships are supported by funds raised from OCES’ Hoarding 101 Workshop for service providers held earlier this year and attended by 156 professionals.

“A hoarding disorder not only disrupts an individual’s daily life, it can also significantly affect their relationships with loved ones. This self-help workshop will help attendees better understand it and learn practical coping skills,” explained Terri Kourtz, OCES’ Protective Services Director and Chair of The Greater Brockton Area Hoarding Task Force(GBAH).  

Buried in Treasures Virtual Workshop is available to individuals of all ages and there are no geographic restrictions. Past participants of Buried in Treasures workshops have shared that they found the workshop very helpful, they felt supported, and would recommend the workshop.

What is Hoarding?

Hoarding is when individuals continue to accumulate items, such as clothing, newspapers and food, and then have persistent difficulty discarding possessions. Individuals with hoarding behaviors often face health issues related to falls, as well as the risk of losing their homes.

Par for the Cure – Type One to Hold 1st Annual Golf Tourney on September 15th

Type One, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Hingham, MA, will hold their 1st Annual Par For The Cure Golf Tourney at Crosswinds Golf Club in Plymouth, MA on Wednesday, September 15, 2021. Sponsorships are available.

Registration opens at 11:00 a.m. with a scramble shotgun start at 1:00 p.m., immediately followed by hors d’oeuvres during cocktail reception at 6:00 p.m. There will be activities on the course as well as a live and silent auction and raffles. Foursomes as well as individual golfers are invited to sign up. Early registration is encouraged as space is limited. This event is open to all ages and abilities. 

Type One’s 1st Annual Golf Tournament supports the Type One Cares charity dedicated to building a community to assist those affected by type 1 diabetes with support, education and endowment, so they can live a powerful life beyond the diagnosis. Type One Cares does this while continuing to fund research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

Over the past decade, Type One has made an incredible impact toward their mission of funding research to cure type 1 diabetes (T1D) and supporting those in need of help to manage their disease through their Renegade Run Obstacle Course Race. 

“Type One recognizes a world free of type 1 diabetes and is dedicated to that future by raising public awareness and funds toward a cure through research,” explained Type One’s co-founder, Paul Foti. “After 10 years, and much deliberation due to coronavirus, we decided for the health and safety of our greater community, that we would change it up this year and bring people together at this beautiful golf course.” 

The obstacle course race had traditionally been held at Wompatuck State Park and Bare Cove Park in Hingham, with last year being a virtual race. To date, Type One Renegade Run events have generated over $100,000 in support of research at the Faustman Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).  The Faustman Lab is focused on discovering and developing new treatments for type 1 diabetes, a vaccine for the reversal of long-term type 1 diabetes and other autoimmune diseases. In addition to supporting the Faustman Lab at MGH, Type One donation and fundraising platforms help provide scholarships to local children with type 1 diabetes to attend type 1 diabetes camp, as well as providing qualifying recipients with assistance for diabetes management and treatment. The voice of working people reverberates on the new “South Coast Working” podcast launched by the Arnold M Dubin / UMass Dartmouth Labor Education Center.

“South Coast Working” is a new podcast and promotes the voice of working people and those who continue to build the South Coast each and every day.  From the docks to the mills to the classrooms to the roadways, working people add a voice and life to the region.

South Coast Working was born from the inspiration and motivation of students, staff and faculty of Arnold M. Dubin Labor Education Center, UMass Dartmouth, as well as the adult children and grandchildren for which the Center was named, in order to spread awareness about the challenges facing and opportunities available to members of the workforce in and around South Coast Massachusetts. Through passionate collaboration, it was determined that a podcast would be the most effective and accessible medium to achieve this goal.

The first episode chronicles the long-awaited arrival of commuter rail line infrastructure that will connect New Bedford with Boston – and all of the economic advantages it offers. Recently graduated student journalist, Liz Anusauskas spoke with prominent commuter leaders Siggy Meilus, founder of UMass Dartmouth’s transportation advocacy organization, Bus Riders United and Eric Carvalho, president of Fall River’s Amalgamated Transit Union Local 174. These conversations take listeners on a deep dive into the complexities of public transportation and the profound impact its presence, or lack thereof, can have on a population.

“Our new podcast is intended to inform, entertain and uplift workers from all walks of life and throughout the South Coast,” noted Kim Wilson, Director of UMass Dartmouth’s Arnold M. Let there be light. Breakthrough new Unicorn Grow Light further simplifies the Home Grow process.

The new Unicorn Series 160W LED Grow Light from Green Goddess Supply is a unique new solution to simplifying the home grow process.  The innovative light is specifically intended to be used in a confined space such as a home grow box and is specially tuned to generate high output at a very low wattage.

The game-changing light features both 112pc SMD and 2pc COB LED lights, dimmable switches and comes with a 3-year warranty. The dimmable switches allow the home grower to dial up or down to maximize the growth of their particular strain, and optimize for heat output within a confined space. 

The Unicorn Grow Light includes two rectangular arrays of 48 individual LEDs on the left and right of the lighting board. There are also two COB (Chip On Board) lights, made with thick glass domed covers, that produce modern day, artificial sunlight replacement.

The light also controls IR, UV and UVB which inhibit mold and mildew. Insects are also repelled by these LEDs.

“Lights impact the size of plant growth. Thus, with the Unicorn Grow Light, a home grower can expect larger, more bountiful grows,” noted Mr. Bitetti.  He adds, “I have been experimenting with home grow for over three decades and have a whole office full of lighting units.  We combined the best of components and technology in the Unicorn Grow Light.”

Eric Robichaud, also of Green Goddess Supply, asserts, “The biggest challenge with growing cannabis is managing lighting which impacts heat and radiation. Most lights do not allow you to lower or increase the radiation.  The Unicorn’s switches allow the grower to manage that critical element with precision.”

Total Spectrum Opens New Location in East Lansing and Is Now Hiring

 Total Spectrum, part of LEARN Behavioral, a national organization serving children with autism and other special needs, has recently opened the doors of their new learning center at 2248 W. Mount Hope Road, Okemos, MI 48864.

Car Seat Safety Event at the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield on June 26th

Families from Marshfield and surrounding towns are invited to a Car Seat Safety Event at the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield, 37 Proprietor’s Drive in Marshfield, on Saturday, June 26, 2021 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. This is a free event.

The Car Seat Safety Event would serve to inspect car seats installed in vehicles and correct any errors in installation.

“Statistics have shown that car seats that have been properly installed have saved many children during car collisions,” explained Massachusetts State Police Trooper Jessie Barbosa who is a certified Car Seat Technician.

Trooper Barbosa and her team would also take the time to educate families in car seat safety, whether their car seat may have been recalled, and whether the car seat they have is right for the age and weight of their child.

“The Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield is an essential community connection for many families and provides critical services and information,” said Jim Bunnell, CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield. “This educational event will help to ensure that children are safe when traveling in a vehicle.”

An Impaired Driving Awareness table, organized by the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, will be set up during the event as well.

This event is presented by the Massachusetts State Police, the Marshfield Police, the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office, and the Boys & Girls Club of Marshfield.
