May 3, 2016 //  by admin

TIC imageThe award-winning Talking Information Center (TIC) is “turning print into sound” for senior residents at the Village at Proprietors Green in Marshfield, MA with the installation of a specially tuned radio receiver. TIC is a non-profit reading service, which broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to thousands of visually impaired and otherwise disabled listeners.

TIC’s radio receiver was installed at Proprietors Green. Jim Bunnell, TIC’s Executive Director completed the installation and spoke to staff and residents about the TIC reading program. He also demonstrated how to use the radio and how to review the daily schedule.

TIC’s mission is to provide human voice(d) broadcasts to visually impaired and otherwise disabled listeners throughout Massachusetts to promote independence and enrich quality of life. TIC broadcasts newspapers, magazines, books, special consumer information, medical and stock market updates, jobs, sports, supermarket specials, voting guides, community newspapers, and television programs. They also offer cultural programming such as old-time radio drama, theater, and poetry. Two of TIC’s newest shows include Veterans Voice Radio and Veterans Voice Story Hour, which are specifically geared toward military veterans and their families.

“We’re delighted to work with Proprietor’s Green and other senior living communities that wish to provide TIC’s innovative programs to their residents,” noted Bunnell.

Approximately 10,000 people turn 65 every day in the U.S. and in Massachusetts, 34 percent of people with disabilities are 65 and older.

Bunnell continued, “TIC has thousands of blind/visually impaired listeners statewide, yet there is a broader audience who can benefit. There are a growing number of seniors seeking informational, entertaining broadcasts that just aren’t available elsewhere, and that’s where TIC comes in.”

Senior living communities may arrange for TIC’s specially tuned radio receiver to be installed on-site by calling TIC at (781) 834-4400. For more information about TIC’s programming, visit www.ticnetwork.org.

Lapels Dry Cleaning's drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister begins May 7
Lapels Dry Cleaning’s drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister begins May 7

HANOVER, MA …

Lapels Dry Cleaning will host their clothing drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister organizations starting May 7 and running through May 22. Lapels Dry Cleaning stores in Arizona, Connecticut, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, and New Jersey will be accepting clothing donations during this time period.

“Lapels customers have always been very generous in donating clothing to our drive to benefit Big Brother/Big Sister. Last year was our best year ever as we collected more than 11,000 pounds of clothing—that’s the equivalent of $11,000,” said Kevin Dubois, CEO of Lapels Dry Cleaning. “Clearly, we are very grateful to everyone who donates to this drive. Still, in our fourth year, it would be nice to push beyond 11,000 pounds and break 12,000 for a very worthy cause.”

Lapels customers and the general public are welcome to donate any gently used clothing items, including:  Men’s, Women’s and Children’s clothing, coats, jackets, shoes (any season or size). Household items such as linens, sheets, blankets, towels, drapes, comforters, afghans, curtains, fabric and purses are also accepted.

Clothes collected by Lapels Dry Cleaning will be donated to Big Brother/Big Sister and in turn will then be sold by high-end thrift stores. The net proceeds from those sales are donated to Big Brother/Big Sister mentoring programs for young girls and boys.

“Our annual clothing drive is something our customers look forward to because it kills two birds with one stone. On one hand, they get to help a very worthy cause raise money without it costing a dime out of their pocket. On the other hand, they’re removing unwanted items from their home. It’s the proverbial win-win,” said Dubois.

John Shea, producer at Talking Information Center reading service for the visually impaired (right) with Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and runners Sarah Dever and her sighted guide Sammie Nunziata of Team With A Vision during Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired Volunteer Appreciation Brunch.

Thousands of visually impaired listeners were able to tune in and get up-close and personal with Team With A Vision runners and their sighted guides at the 2016 Boston Marathon via the Talking Information Center (TIC) non-profit reading service’s live radio broadcast of the event.

TIC producer John Shea took listeners from the Hopkinton starting line to the finish line of the 120th running of the Boston Marathon in a narrative of the race that included interviews with Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and a number of Team With A Vision runners.

Team With A Vision is comprised of runners with visual impairment and their sighted guides who take part in events all around the country to raise funds and awareness for the Massachusetts Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired (MABVI). This year marked Team With A Vision’s 24th year running the Boston Marathon. According to Team With A Vision’s Boston Marathon page, the group has raised more than $137K, and all funds raised support MABVI’s statewide network of vision rehabilitation services.

Shea discussed some of the challenges of the race with Team With A Vision member John Chan, a visually impaired runner from Staten Island, NY who has run in more than 40 marathons and was running for the second time with Team With A Vision.

“The biggest thing would be just the obstacles along the course, which are potholes, curves and turns, and there’s train track in some parts of it too… If it wasn’t for the guide, I wouldn’t be able to run it efficiently,” explained Chan.

To hear the personal stories of Team With A Vision runners and learn more about the challenges, their goals and how they communicate with their sighted guides during the race, tune in to TIC’s Mission Possible archived segment from April 18th: http://ticnetwork.com/audio/wire/mission.htm.

ELERTS Corp., a leading provider of emergency communication mobile apps, announced that its Event Alert communication system will be used to enhance safety at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD).

DORCHESTER, MA and WEYMOUTH, MA…

ELERTS Corp., a leading provider of emergency communication mobile apps, announced that its Event Alert communication system will be used to enhance safety at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester (BGCD).  Staff at all three locations will have access to the ELERTS app, which enables them to immediately alert Boston Police, BGCD staff and administrators about safety and security concerns.

“Child safety has always been our number one concern. Part of that commitment is looking to the latest advances in technology to provide an even safer environment. The ELERTS app represents an advance that will help us communicate better in the event of an emergency, to protect our children, staff and facilities,” said Bob Scannell, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester.

In the event of a safety or security concern, the ELERTS app will enable staff members at all three Club locations to send and receive alerts on their smartphones and computers. Situation awareness improves when details about an incident can be immediately shared with staff and police. Reports may include a description of the issue, photos, video, and a GPS map, pinpointing the problem area. The app being provided by ELERTS will also enable Medical Emergency and Missing Person reporting.

“Ease of use is a cornerstone of ELERTS Event Alert app—by tapping a few buttons on your smartphone you can report a safety incident, suspicious behavior or an emergency. Information is provided immediately to others in the facility and to local police. This situation awareness helps people better respond to an incident,” said Ed English, CEO of ELERTS Corp. “For the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, the ability to issue alerts about an emergency situation in real time provides a timely advantage should assistance be needed.”

The ELERTS app will be available to staff at all Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester locations: Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center at 1135 Dorchester Avenue; Colonel Daniel Marr Boys & Girls Club at 35 Deer Street; and Walter Denney Youth Center at Harbor Point Apartment Complex, 270 Mount Vernon Street.

ELERTS safety communication apps are used by K-12 schools, colleges and universities, medical centers and hospitals, corporate facilities and other organizations. A similar ELERTS app is used by major transits, including the MBTA in Boston, the MARTA in Atlanta and BART in San Francisco.  By enlisting app users to report security concerns, ELERTS app acts as a force multiplier for police and security teams.

South Coast Improvement, Co. begins renovation at Bay Cove, 374 Dorchester Street, South Boston

BOSTON, MA, and MARION, MA…

South Coast Improvement Company (SCI), a design-build general contractor serving New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, recently began a renovation project at Bay Cove, a housing complex located at 374 Dorchester Street in South Boston. The complex is owned and operated by Bay Cove Human Services, A leading human service agency in Boston serving individuals facing the challenges of developmental disabilities, mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction and aging.

The project, which began earlier this month, features the complete renovation of the kitchen and bathrooms in the eight units at 374 Dorchester Street. The bedrooms in each of those units will receive new dry wall, new ceiling plaster, new light fixtures and other amenities.

The common areas of the building, which includes a reception area, kitchen and bath, will also be completely renovated. In addition, the brick exterior of the building will be washed and a new roof and gutters will be installed.

South Coast Improvement Company began these renovations in March and anticipates all work to be completely finished by late spring/early summer. The total renovation project will cost approximately $1.3 million.

“This is a delicate kind of renovation as the majority of work is being done in people’s homes. So, we have to be sensitive to the interruption to people’s routines and communicate very clearly and often the status of work and any changes,” said Tom Quinlan, president of South Coast Improvement Company. “Fortunately, through our work at assisted living and other residences, we can take on a renovation project like this and minimize the impact on residents.”

Beware of the Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing. Safer Places, Inc. expands Security Consulting Division to develop objective specs for security systems and RFPs.

April 21, 2016 //  by admin

MIDDLEBORO, MA…

Safer Places Inc., a firm providing pre-employment screening, tenant screening and security consulting, today announced the expansion of the Security Consulting Division in deference to the greater concern in the business community regarding the need for more sophisticated security systems and more objective specs for security vendors to bid on.

“Most facility managers, architects, building owners and commercial builders are overwhelmed by the security choices that confront them,” noted David Sawyer, the founder of Safer Places Inc. based in Middleborough, MA and serving clients throughout the United States.  He continued, “Our consulting division asks the right questions, offers the most cost-effective solutions and develops a comprehensive criteria for security contractors to bid on.  This ensures that our client receives the security parameters that they really need and a set of specs that vendors can bid on apples to apples.”

Stephen Bukoski, Director of the Consulting Division added, “Safer Places does not install systems. Safer Places, Inc. is not affiliated with any security companies or manufacturers of security equipment. We offer unbiased, independent assessments of security needs.”  He added, “In fact, in addition to developing security and safety criteria, we often help clients manage the RFP process and evaluate proposals to help them select the best possible system from the most reliable vendor at the most favorable price.”

State-of-the-art security systems have become highly complex and integrate video surveillance, access control and intrusion alarms.  In addition to sophisticated hardware and software recommendations, the Security Consulting Division also includes proprietary guard service assessment and training, safety and awareness training for non-security staff and a solid set of policies and procedures.

A recent security evaluation of Merrimack Valley School District in New Hampshire is an illustration Safer Places, Inc.’s Security Consulting Division thorough protocol.  The school district includes nine buildings and an integrated program was needed.  Consultants began by meeting with each school principal to familiarize themselves with the facilities and flow of students, faculty and staff. Upon discussion, a comprehensive outline included perimeter security, access controls, strategically placed camera systems, wireless panic alarms for all teachers, value engineering to identify the best product for the price and performance and vetting of installers/integrators to make sure installations were flawless.

Safer Places, Inc.’s Security Consulting Division clients include hospitals/medical facilities, schools, colleges/universities, apartment buildings, office buildings, warehouse facilities, architects, facility managers, property managers, building owners, commercial construction and commercial real estate.

About Safer Places, Inc.

Safer Places, Inc. is a full-service firm that provides pre-employment screening, security consulting, tenant screening, and additional verification services for schools, private and public companies, property managers, property owners and anyone seeking to research an individual’s background.

Since the events of September 11, 2001, the importance of background checks has taken on increased prominence, and Safer Places, Inc. has undertaken a number of educational initiatives for the public, including the establishment of an ongoing webinar series, which the company calls its ‘online university’, Safer Places Inc. University (SPIU). The SPIU program provides ongoing information for those looking to learn more about background verifications, drug testing and other related topics.

Safer Places, Inc. also offers a series of specialized services including Character Assessment Testing, Employee Photo IDs, and Integrated Applicant Tracking (ATS) services. Increasingly, companies are using background checks as a condition of continued employment, particularly when an individual is being considered for a new position or promotion.
