Skin Cancer Experts Compile “Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer”

June 15, 2009 //  by admin

Given the recent recognition of unusually high skin cancer rates on the South Shore, South Shore Skin Center, with locations in Cohasset and Plymouth, are compiling a list of “Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer”.

The public is encouraged to add to the list which will be published on South Shore Skin Center’s website – http://www.southshoreskincenter.com. Public suggestions may be emailed to sdubin@prworkzone.com. The deadline is June 27th – just after the conclusion of the public school year.

Some initial Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites include South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset, Sam Diego’s tented patio in Plymouth, The Company Theater in Norwell, South Shore Natural Center in Norwell and F1 Boston in Braintree.

Last summer it was reported that some of the wealthiest communities on the South Shore have the highest melanoma skin cancer rates, in some cases more than double the number expected, according to newly released state data.

The latest Cancer Incidence in Massachusetts Report, released by the Department of Public Health, shows that between 2001 and 2005 melanoma occurred well beyond projections in Cohasset, Duxbury, Norwell, Hingham and Milton.

“We are encouraging families to be very careful about sun exposure and focusing on less sunny, yet fun summer events can help minimize that exposure,” noted Dr. Richard Eisen, a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset.

Dr. Ramzi Saad, also a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, added, “Summer means free time to explore and try new things.  The Less Sunny and Soothing South Shore Sites for the Summer program is intended to give families fun and safe ideas.”

Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, executive director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation, (Hingham, MA) and Mary Mills Barrow, co-founder of Coolibar, have been awarded the American Academy of Dermatology’s prestigious Gold Triangle Award for their “Pretty Prom: Your Skin is Pretty Too” and “Lake Vacation” books.

Maguire-Eisen and Barrow wrote the two books to empower adolescents with up to date and reliable information about the dangers of overexposure to ultraviolet radiation and to offer positive, easy action steps for sun protection. The pair wrote the books as part of the SunAWARE program, that provides information on sun protection and early detection of skin cancer.

The award was presented to the authors at the American Academy of Dermatology 67th Annual Convention held in San Francisco on March 6th.

“Both Coolibar and the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation are dedicated to helping young adults establish healthy, sun-safe behavior early in life,” said Barrow. “And we’re thrilled that our books are being recognized as effective resources for adolescents across the country.”

“We’re honored that our books have received the Gold Triangle designation. Melanoma prevention is a cause in which we are both very passionate. We must do everything we can to educate and empower young people about the dangers of UV radiation because through knowledge and prevention, we can save lives,” said Maguire-Eisen.

During the convention, Maguire-Eisen was honored with a second award, the President’s Award, given by the Dermatology Nurses Association (DNA) for exceptional dedication and service to the DNA. Maguire-Eisen was selected among 4,000 DNA members by Karrie Fairbrother, RN, BSN, DNC, president of the DNA.

Maguire-Eisen continued, “I’d also like to thank the DNA for honoring me with the President’s Award. It was quite a surprise and I’m flattered to have been recognized for my contributions to the organization.”

Maguire-Eisen who is a resident of Hingham, was also recently nominated for the town’s “Citizen of the Year” award.

About the Books

Pretty Prom: Your Skin is Pretty Too tells the story of Katie who finds out the sad facts of tanning salons while getting ready for prom night. It is written for preteens and teens to educate them about premature aging and skin cancers caused by tanning. Lake Vacation is for children ages 6-10 and is the story of Hunter and Caitlin learning the importance of sun protection while enjoying the outdoors. This book teaches the five easy steps of being SunAWARE. The Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation recently distributed $5,000 worth of these two books to the DNA for educational purposes. Funds to do so were provided from the Ride for Melanoma event that was held in June 2008. Both books are available for purchase at www.coolibar.com.

Each year, the Gold Triangle Awards recognize and honor media, industry, health community organizations, public service and individual efforts that further understanding of dermatologic issues and encourage healthy behaviors in the care of the skin, hair and nails. This year marks the 12th Annual Gold Triangle Awards. For more information visit http://www.aad.org.

Dr. Richard Eisen, a board certified dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts with offices in Plymouth and Cohasset recently spoke to the Dermatology Nurses’ Association (DNA) along with his wife, Maryellen Maguire-Eisen, RN, MSN, Executive Director of the Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation.

The duo shared their expert knowledge of sun safety and melanoma (the deadliest form of skin cancer) prevention with more than 100 DNA members at the DNA’s 27th Annual Convention held in San Francisco on March 6th.

They discussed how skin cancer is most commonly caused by overexposure to sunlight, or artificial UV radiation and recommended that everyone follow SunAWARE, an acronym coined by Mary and John Barrow, authors of Sun Protection for Life: Your Guide to a Lifetime of Healthy and Beautiful Skin. SunAWARE stands for:

· Avoid unprotected UV exposure any time and seek shade

· Wear sun protective clothing including hats and sunglasses

· Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen prior to UV exposure and reapply every two hours

· Routinely check your whole body for changes in your skin and report suspicious changes to a health care practitioner.

· Educate your family and community about sun protection.

Dr. Eisen taught that anyone can develop melanoma anywhere on their body and that new and changing moles should be evaluated. He also shared five tips on how to identify potentially dangerous moles or melanomas:

· Moles that are asymmetric, where one side of the mole does not match the other.

· Moles that have edges that are irregular, ragged or blurred.

· A mole that has more than one color, with shades of black, brown, red, white, blue or tan.

· Moles that are larger than a pencil eraser.

· Moles that bleed, itch or change in appearance.

“Certain types of moles have a higher risk of becoming malignant melanomas. Melanoma can be deadly because it can spread to other parts of the body. But, it may be cured in its early stages. It’s very important to take preventative measures such as those outlined in SunAWARE and to watch for changes in the skin and follow up on questionable or changing moles with a dermatologist as soon as possible,” explained Dr. Eisen.

Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation

The Children’s Melanoma Prevention Foundation, located in Hingham, Mass., delivers a comprehensive sun safety and melanoma awareness program, free of charge, to school children in Massachusetts. The foundation has won the 2009 American Academy of Dermatology Gold Triangle Award for their two new children’s books, Pretty Prom and Lake Vacation.  For more information, contact 781-875-1SPF (1773) or visit www.melanomaprevention.org.

South Shore Dermatologist Featured as Lecturer at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York

December 18, 2008 //  by admin

Dr. Richard Eisen, a Board Certified Dermatologist at South Shore Skin Center, was recently a guest lecturer at Albert Einstein College of Medicine –Yeshiva University, Bronx, New York. South Shore Skin Center is one of the most progressive dermatology practices in Massachusetts offering a wide range of medical, surgical and cosmetic services. Their offices are located in Plymouth and Cohasset.

Dr. Eisen, who is the founding physician of South Shore Skin Center, taught Albert Einstein resident physicians and other attendees about photodynamic therapy and the latest treatments for Actinic Keratoses (AKs); pre-cancerous skin lesions and superficial skin cancers.
