Spring now on deck…Get your deck ready for spring and summer entertaining.

April 20, 2010 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

To many homeowners, a deck project is an all-or-nothing proposition. You either rebuild or stand pat. Yet if you’re not in rebuild mode, a spring “makeover” can not only make your deck look better for entertaining, it can also preserve its long-term health.

“Whether you live in a cold or warm climate, winter can do a real number on a deck. So adding ‘cleaning and repairing the deck’ to your spring cleaning chore list is a pretty good idea,” said Mike Georgeff, of DirectBuy. “That can range from tightening loose boards and hammering loose nails, to cleaning your deck with a bleach solution to take care of mold and mildew that may have built up over the winter.”

If your deck is in need of a more thorough cleaning, you may want to consider purchasing or renting a pressure washer. And if it’s been more than a year or two since you stained your deck, a new coat with sealant is probably in order. Using a different color stain can literally create an entire new look for your deck and preserve it for the long haul.

Other than cosmetic changes, you may want to add some accessories and furniture to expand on the new look of your deck. Some relatively simple and cost-effective ideas include:

  • Replacing old lighting and/or installing new solar lights – classic wooden post caps or solar light caps can easily be glued on to give your deck a new look.
  • Add new furniture – consider different types of furniture for your deck: porch rockers, recliners, wicker armchairs, and love seats. End tables and coffee tables, items typically thought of for indoor use, can also make quite an impact outdoors.
  • Plants, plants, and more plants – fill planter boxes with vines and colorful flowers or load planters with ornamental grasses. Lightweight containers and soil-less planting mix makes moving plants around easier. To minimize maintenance, add water-retention polymers and slow-release fertilizer.
  • Carpeting – while carpeting an entire deck might be impractical, a rug underneath the table where meals will be eaten does provide a more comfortable experience for guests. It also protects the deck from scratches as people come and go from the table.
  • Cabinetry for the grill area – many grills come with built in storage space; you can really cut down the number of trips to the “indoor” kitchen by adding portable cabinets or storage units and shelving.

“By following some or all of these guidelines, you can makeover your deck in a weekend or two,” said Georgeff. “Even better, you can give your deck a new look without the investment of rebuilding your deck or adding on.”

DirectBuy Club offers many products to help with your deck makeover, including furniture, grills, lighting, and other accessories—all at direct insider prices. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need assistance selecting products or advice on how to go about a home improvement project, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

Easy-to-be-green home improvement projects

February 16, 2010 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

For many homeowners, there’s a misconception that “greening” or improving the energy efficiency of your home takes a lot of another kind of green – money. In reality, there are a number of do-it-yourself home improvement projects homeowners can undertake that do not require much of a financial commitment or advanced technical skills.

“One of the more obvious ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home is to replace older appliances and heating units with ENERGY STAR products. Even with tax credits and rebates that are presently available, that’s not financially feasible for a number of households,” said Mike Georgeff, of DirectBuy. “Starting small with some low cost, do-it-yourself projects is a great way to make your home run greener and reduce your utility costs as well.”

Some green, do-it-yourself projects that a novice handyman can undertake include:

·         Insulating hot water pipes – A lot of heat and energy is lost through your hot water systems. The pipes disperse heat pretty quickly, so even if the water in the heater is warm, the water left in the pipes is not. This means you need to run the water for several minutes before hot water flows through the pipes. This wastes water and causes you to heat more water when it’s probably not necessary. For around $100, you can insulate your pipes with either rubber or polyethylene foam. This minimizes the cool-down time on your hot water pipes. Consequently, you save water by not having to let it run as long and energy because your hot water heater isn’t working as hard.

·         Insulating your water heater – Following the same concept as heating your hot water pipes, by putting an insulating jacket on your hot water heater you can lessen heat loss by up to 40 percent.

·         Install a programmable thermostat – By programming your heating system to lower temperatures or turning it off completely when you’re at work during the day, you can save up to 15 percent on your heating bill.

·         Install a ceiling fan – Not only can this help lessen air conditioning use during the warmer parts of the year, but reversing the direction of the fan can actually help you re-circulate the heat during the cooler times of the year.

·         Planting trees – Believe it or not, by strategically planting shade trees around your home, you can save considerably on your energy bills by reducing your air conditioning costs during summer. In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy found that by planting as few as three trees in the right locations can save an average household between $100 and $250 in energy costs per year.

·         Weather-strip your windows – If replacing your current windows with double- or triple-pane windows is too costly, you can improve your home’s energy efficiency by adding weather stripping to windows where air is coming through. Doors and electrical outlets are a few other areas where weather stripping can also provide more than a stopgap measure.

“These are just a few ways a homeowner can improve the energy efficiency of their home without a huge financial commitment and without having to be an expert on home improvement. You just have to be able to follow instructions,” said Georgeff. “By taking these small steps you can improve your home’s energy efficiency and put the savings toward upgrading appliances and other household necessities with ENERGY STAR products down the road.”

DirectBuy Club offers many products to improve the energy efficiency of your home—all at direct insider prices. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need some assistance in selecting products or taking on a home improvement project, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

Dreaming of a green Christmas

November 30, 2009 //  by admin

CHICAGO, GURNEE, HOFFMAN ESTATES, NAPERVILLE, TINLEY PARK, IL …

Bing Crosby had a white one. Elvis was blue. And while a “green” Christmas might not translate into song lyrics as well as those other colors, celebrating the holiday season in a greener, more environmentally friendly way is certainly desirable. As the leading home improvement and furnishing club, DirectBuy, with several locations in greater Chicago, has some helpful tips on planning greener holiday celebrations.

“The holidays are a great time of year to get together with family and friends, but the amount of waste is really astounding,” said Jeremy Vest, owner of DirectBuy of DuPage County.

How much waste? Consider this: More than one million greeting cards are thrown away every year and the lights used to decorate your home produce enough carbon dioxide to inflate 12 balloons. Worse yet, more than 51 miles of wrapping paper finds itself used only once and then thrown away.

So, how can you have a greener holiday season? Follow these helpful holiday tips to ensure successful, environmentally friendly festivities:

  • Use LED light instead of your classic holiday lights, which last 80 to 90 percent longer. The price for strands of LED lights are roughly the same as those classic lights. If everyone switched to LEDs in their household, the savings alone would be enough to power 200,000 homes for an entire year.
  • Turn off your holiday lights and electronic decorations and devices when not in use. Even in standby mode these items can consume 15 percent of your household’s electricity.
  • Use real glasses and dishes instead of disposable ones for your holiday party. Also, go with cloth tablecloths instead of throwaways.
  • Send holiday e-cards online instead of mailing paper versions. Not only is this a more environmentally friendly approach, but you’ll also save a little change in postage. You can also create an online photo album yourself and circulate the link to family and friends to create that personal touch.
  • Give experiential presents. This is a good idea if you’re not sure what to get someone and fear your gift may simply be stored instead of used. By gifting your loved ones with horseback riding lessons, a massage, or even a gift certificate for a class at their local continuing education facility you’ll stand out among the crowd plus help everyone live a little greener.
  •  Re-use your grocery bags or posters from old magazines by decorating them for use as wrapping paper. If that’s a little too work-intensive, by performing a simple online search you can quickly purchase recycled wrapping paper that can be delivered to your home quickly.
  • Buy a real tree this year. Surprised we’re suggesting cutting down trees to stay green? Don’t be. Artificial trees are petroleum-based and non-biodegradable, and the manufacturing process includes metal and PVC derivatives, the by-products of which can cause harm to both humans and the environment. If you don’t have room for a full-size, farm-grown tree, buy a potted version that you can later plant in your garden and possibly re-use next year.

“The holidays really are a time for us to reflect back on the year and be grateful for the many gifts we do have. One of those gifts is the very earth we live on,” said I.J. Sell, owner of DirectBuy of Tinely Park. “By following just a few of these green suggestions, you can reduce your carbon imprint and, perhaps, even enjoy a more memorable holiday season knowing you’re making your corner of the world a little greener.”

For more than 38 years, DirectBuy clubs have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, flooring and accessories by purchasing from over 700 brand-name manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. No place like your home for the holidays (and guests)

November 16, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

One of the wonders of the holiday season is how it brings family and friends together—especially those loved ones who live far away and you haven’t seen in a while. If you want to do a little more than roll out the proverbial red carpet, there are some relatively quick and inexpensive home improvement projects you can undertake before guests arrive.

“It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the prospect of guests coming over for the holidays,” said Mike Georgeff of DirectBuy. “The truth of the matter is that with a tweak here and a little refreshing there, you can transform your home into impressive accommodations for your guests.”

Some quick and easy home improvement projects to take on prior to the holidays include:

  • Paint: If you’ve got the time, a new coat of paint will do wonders in upgrading the look, feel and appeal of your guest room or bath.
  • Window treatments: Changing the appearance of your windows with blinds, valences, shades and curtains is an inexpensive way to add color to a room. To quickly give your room that holiday feel, simply tie some red ribbon around your new curtains.
  • “New” furniture: While there may not be time – or a budget – to buy new furniture before the holidays, you can instead give your existing furniture a facelift using new slip covers or consider having one or two favorite pieces reupholstered.
  • Linens: A new comforter, sheets and pillow shams can instantly jazz up a guest room.
  • Shower curtains and bath towels: Again, something new not only makes guests feel welcome, but makes you feel better too. And while you’re working on the bathroom, regrout and repair or replace any broken tiles.
  • Clean your gutters: Buildup in your gutters can lead to wet basements and slippery sidewalks, possibly endangering the safety of company.
  • Outdoor motion sensor lights: Your guests may not have visited your home in a while, if ever. Installing motion sensor lights along your sidewalk enhances their safety and adds a deterrent for potential burglars when you’re out of the house during the holidays.

“Creating a welcoming look and feel for guests doesn’t take an extraordinary amount time or money,” said Georgeff. “By undertaking just a few of these home improvement projects, you can give your home a mini-makeover and create a welcoming environment for your company.”

DirectBuy offers many products to help your home look better and run more efficiently during the holiday season and the rest of the winter months—all at direct insider prices. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need some assistance in selecting products or just a second opinion, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

Home safety for the upcoming holiday season.

November 2, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

Sure, you may not have gotten around to carving your Halloween pumpkin, but the holiday season will be here before you know it. To that end, it’s never too early to start preparing your home to be safe during the holiday season. That’s why DirectBuy, the leading members-only home improvement and home furnishings club, is offering some home safety tips to help homeowners get a head start.

“According to the National Safety Council, 45 percent of all unintentional deaths occur around the home. Add holiday items to the mix—lights, trees, candles, guests, etc.—and you up the ante on things that could possibly go wrong,” said Mike Georgeff, of DirectBuy. “By taking a few extra precautions, you can make your home that much safer, not only for the holiday season but the rest of the year.”

Some easy, cost-effective measures to improve safety in your home include:

  • Regularly testing your smoke alarms and installing smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of your home — especially near sleeping areas.
  • Using insulated tape or plastic clips to hold outdoor lighting; be sure to keep electrical connectors off the ground and away from metal rain gutters.
  • If your gas fireplace’s glass panel is cracked or broken, you’ll want to repair or replace it before using.
  • Replace your furnace filter regularly during heating seasons.
  • Keep candles away from your Christmas tree. If you’re going with a natural tree, select a freshly cut one, which are more resistant to ignition.
  •  Carefully inspect holiday light strings each year and get rid of any with frayed cords, cracked lamp holders, or loose connections. Be sure to unplug the light string when replacing light bulbs, too.
  • Use a timer for your outdoor lights, turning them on after 7 p.m. to avoid the electricity rush hour. For indoor lights, never leave them on when your house is unattended or you are asleep.
  • Never connect more than one extension cord together; instead opt for a single cord long enough to reach the outlet without stretching, but not so long that it can get easily tangled.

“The holidays are a special time of year that help foster memories that can last a lifetime,” said Georgeff. “By taking just a few precautions to be safe during the holiday, those memories can be for the special times you had and not a preventable tragedy.”

DirectBuy offers many products to help your home run more efficiently during the holiday season and the rest of the winter months—all at direct insider prices. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if you need some assistance in selecting products or just a second opinion, you have seasoned professionals at your service.

Checkpoint…The fall home improvement projects that should be on your list.

September 28, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

For the many people who live in a climate with four seasons, fall can mean any number of things. Football. Foliage. Frost. And the one “f” homeowners dread most, fixing up your home in preparation for winter. DirectBuy, the home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, has some suggestions for the top of your to-do list this fall.

“From a home improvement standpoint, fall projects really are about getting ready for winter, namely making your home more energy efficient and thereby cost-effective,” said Sara Butler of DirectBuy. “Ideally, you would replace furnaces, windows and other higher ticket items but that’s not always realistic. There are some things you can do in the interim to improve efficiency.”

For starters:

Furnace – Test your heating system now before you actually need to turn the heat on in the house. If there’s a problem, get your furnace serviced now before it gets cold and other people have the same idea. Be sure to replace the filter on your furnace prior to turning on the heat in the fall. Filters come in a number of different makes—30, 60, and 90-day, as well as ones you don’t replace but occasionally clean. It’s important to know which type you have in your home if you’re considering changing these yourself.

Weather stripping – You’ll find weather stripping around most doors and windows. The elements can do a number on weather stripping over time and you’ll want to do a quick inspection in the fall to determine if any stripping needs to be replaced before the cold weather hits. Your local hardware store should carry replacement stripping that you can use to replace any deteriorating sections.

Winterize your hose bib – The hose bib is the part of the outdoor faucet where you attach the hose. If you do not turn off the outdoor water source from the inside of your home, you run the risk of the pipe leading to the hose bib freezing and bursting—even if it’s only been for a few days of sub-freezing temperatures. So, be sure to turn that water source off before the frost begins.

Painting – Fall is also a great time to paint, both indoors and out. As long as it’s not too cold or, obviously, raining, paint goes on and dries better in the fall. If you’re painting the outside of your house, paint actually has a sealant quality. So, in addition to giving your exterior a fresh look, you’re also preparing it for elements associated with winter.

“The beauty of most fall projects is that, for the most part, they are not huge undertakings but the benefits can be plentiful. The key is planning and prioritizing what’s important to your home and your household,” said Butler. “By simply creating a small checklist of projects you want to do this fall, you can still make a difference in your home without overwhelming yourself.”.

DirectBuy offers everything you need for your fall fix-up projects—windows, water heaters, insulations, ladders, you name it—at wholesale prices direct from the manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if a fall fix-up project is a bit aboveyour skill level or you don’t have the time, you have professionals at your service who can get the job done and help get your home ready for the winter months.

Tips for Creating Your Dream Space: Back to the drawing board and other extras for your kitchen remodel

September 21, 2009 //  by admin

Remodeling your kitchen is one of the more expensive home improvement projects you can undertake. It’s also a project that recoups more of its cost at resale than most others. And with a few extra touches–like a chalkboard area, exhaust fan and sliding kitchen cabinet doors — your investment in a kitchen remodel can dramatically improve your quality of life while you’re in your home and put more in your pocket at resale.

Back to the drawing board

The kitchen has become the hub of activity and an information center for many households. But rather than forcing a dry erase board into an existing spot once you’ve remodeled your kitchen, why not make it part of the plan from the get-go.

For example, many new kitchen remodels include wall space painted with chalkboard paint. This gives families a great space to keep important lists and dates and is very easy to maintain since chalkboard paint is easily cleaned with an eraser or damp cloth. You also don’t have to concern yourself with fitting in a drab white dry erase board. And, last but not least, your little ones will finally have a place to draw their favorite pictures without causing permanent marks.

Exhausting your new kitchen’s possibilities

Adding an exhaust fan to your kitchen is another nice touch to a kitchen remodel. Exhaust fans not only help eliminate obnoxious smells from your kitchen; they can be a beautiful design accent as well.

Besides being functional, exhaust systems are available in different materials such as wood or stainless steel, which can coordinate nicely with your cabinetry or countertops. So in addition to getting rid of unwanted smells from last night’s seafood dish or the peas you accidentally burned, you further accentuate the beauty of your remodel.

Letting your kitchen cabinets slide

When it comes to remodeling your kitchen, especially the cabinets, it’s easy to get hung up on looks. But you also want your new cabinets to be functional. To that end, sliding cabinet doors are a functional and attractive alternative.

Sliding kitchen cabinet doors work in a similar fashion to sliding patio doors—on a grooved run–only on a smaller scale. So, if you’re sick of bumping your head or other body parts after somebody left a cabinet door open, it’s an option with great functionality.

In terms of looks, kitchen cabinetry with sliding door fronts tend to work best in contemporary, modern, or Asian-inspired designs. While available in a number of attractive wood styles, sliding cabinets are also offered with clear glass doors. This gives you not only a stylish design, but an opportunity to display your dinnerware or barware.

With or without these extras, remodeling your kitchen is a major renovation that can dramatically improve the quality of your day-to-day life. Take your time, get several opinions and don’t forget those little extras that can elevate a good remodel to a great one.

Area resident wins $50,000 grand prize from DirectBuy. Kelly Clarkson, of Moore, Oklahoma, plans to use winnings to purchase first home.

September 16, 2009 //  by admin

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK…

Just when Kelly Clarkson thought her life was caving in around her, she got a second chance to change everything.

That second chance was a letter from DirectBuy, the second such notification sent by the company, notifying Clarkson that she was the winner of the DirectBuy’s $50,000 Home Makeover promotion. And, thankfully, she called DirectBuy’s corporate headquarters just in time to claim her winnings.

“When I received the first letter, I thought someone was playing a trick on me and completely disregarded it, but I’m so glad they sent a second notice and I called,” said Clarkson.

DirectBuy, the home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, named Kelly Clarkson of Moore, Oklahoma as their 2nd national Home Makeover winner this year. Over the past few years, DirectBuy has distributed more than a half million dollars in prize money to both members and non-members as part of their Home Makeover Program, designed to help consumers learn more about DirectBuy, and in the process, help them create the home of their dreams.

On September 10, 2009, Clarkson visited the company’s Oklahoma City location for the formal check presentation.

Weeks prior, Clarkson was summoned to court in a foreclosure dispute on the home she is currently renting. Clarkson, who is disabled, and hasn’t worked for more than two years, didn’t have the finances to purchase the home from the bank and was preparing for a move this year.

But, with a little luck and a second chance, the Clarkson family can now make their current residence a permanent home.

“Just as quickly as things turned for the worst in my life, they just as easily made a turn for the better,” said Clarkson. “I truly feel so blessed!”

Clarkson’s children, 15-year-old Tyler and eight-year-old Samaya, are looking forward to the comfort of knowing they will be staying in their current home and school. And three-year-old Yzabella is thrilled that her mom can now afford to buy her the pink PowerWheels jeep she’s been wanting.

DirectBuy of Oklahoma City franchise owners Brandon and Adriana Parker were excited that their club was able to help someone from their community.

“Having a chance to present a family with a check for $50,000 is one of the most exciting events I have ever participated in,” said Adriana. “There couldn’t have been a more deserving family than the Clarksons, and I am truly happy that DirectBuy could help turn their luck for the better.”

DirectBuy of Oklahoma City, located at 8330 Glade Avenue, offers consumers thousands of items, including kitchen cabinets, flat-screen televisions and major appliances from more than 700 top manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. DirectBuy partners with uRefer to launch new referral rewards program.

August 28, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

DirectBuy, the home improvement and home furnishings club with direct insider prices, recently partnered with leading referral company, uRefer, to create a Web-based referral program that makes it easy for customers to refer friends and family, while also providing the organization with a method to track referrals across their 160+ club network.

“Referrals have always been an important part of our business, and one of the reasons our company is the size it is today,” explained DirectBuy Executive Vice President Bart Fesperman. “The beauty of this new program lies in its simplicity. All we need is someone’s name and email address and the system takes care of the rest.”

Through the uRefer system, anyone can refer up to 10 friends and family members per day to DirectBuy and receive rewards for each referral who becomes a member. By utilizing an automated referral process, uRefer not only successfully streamlines and enhances DirectBuy’s ability to manage the growing amount of referrals they receive, but also provides a user-friendly online platform that allows users to track their referrals from initial contact to completion.

“We are very excited about our partnership with DirectBuy,” says uRefer COO Mike Burba. “The uRefer Referral Management System has helped many companies like DirectBuy generate more referrals from their passionate membership base, and we’re confident this will be another success story.”
