Franchise Financing: Keys to Success in the Current Economic Climate

October 21, 2008 //  by admin

New England Franchise Association (NEFA) will present ” Franchise Financing: Keys to Success in the Current Economic Climate” on Tuesday, November 18, 5:30 p.m. at the Marriot Hotel, 1000 Marriott Drive, Quincy.

The panel discussion will outline how successful franchise development requires franchisors to stay up to date on all financing options available.  Expert panelists include Anne Rice Hunt, Finance Chief, U.S Small Business Administration; Barbara Arena, CIT Small Business Lending, Senior Regional Account Manager; Bill Rowland, Equity America Mortgage Services; Itamar Chalif, Atlantic Capital Solutions; and Tom McDonald, IRA Rollover Solutions.  The discussion will be moderated by Constantine (Dean) Fournaris, Partner, Wiggin and Dana.

In today’s economy one of the biggest concerns of a franchise system is how and where to get capital for franchisees to start their business or ways for franchisees to keep it running or to finance their growth.  This panel discussion is valuable for each member of your franchise development team as well as for existing franchisees, or prospective franchisees interested in expansion.  You will learn how banks and other lending organizations evaluate franchisee loan applications, and the types of funding that is available, even in these unsettled financial times.

The evening includes a cocktail and networking session beginning at 5:30 PM, dinner at 7:00 PM, and then the presentation. The entire business community is urged to attend. Membership in the NEFA is NOT required. Reservations are required.  Registration Fee is $60 per person and includes dinner.  All NEFA Members get $10.00 off.

For information regarding NEFA membership visit www.nefranchise.org.

Why the World Series is best viewed from a “man cave”…

October 20, 2008 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

In your dad’s day, the stereotypical man’s domain, or “man cave,” was the workshop in the garage. Today, the man cave is often the basement den or office. When it’s time to watch the World Series and the resident “caveman” wants to entertain other cavemen and their better halves, he’ll likely realize that his sanctuary might need a little upgrading. DirectBuy, the leading members-only showroom and home design center, has some pointers for making the man cave guest-friendly for the fall classic and the upcoming football playoffs and winter sports season.

“While being able to get away from the rest of the house and watch sporting events like the World Series in peace may have been the genesis of the man cave, what might not have been taken into consideration initially was the desire to someday invite others to watch the game with you. And setting up a space fit for entertaining guests is something a lot of men may want some assistance with,” said Sara Shragal, of DirectBuy.

So what items might today’s cave-gent need to complete the perfect indoor tailgate party?

  • Kegerator – a man-cave essential for a beer-drinking crowd
  •  Wide Screen TV with HD; surround sound speakers optional but highly desirable.
  • Sectional sofa to accommodate multiple visitors; reclining chair with cup holders for the host.
  •  Full-size built-in bar area or free-standing, mobile bar station.
  • Tile or wood flooring that’s particularly resilient to potential spillage.
  • Pool table, air hockey or foosball for halftime recreation.
  •  Mini-kitchen with microwave to reheat buffalo wings.
  •  Home gym equipment—e.g. treadmill, elliptical—to work off the excess calories consumed during man cave weekend marathon—football all day, World Series game at night.

DirectBuy offers nearly everything you need to create the perfect man cave no matter what your favorite sport might be at prices direct from manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. If you know what you want but don’t know how to pull it all together, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and professional designers well versed in the art of designing the perfect recreational space, while keeping you on budget.

DirectBuy of Providence donates foosball table to the Boys & Girls Club of Warwick

October 16, 2008 //  by admin

WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND…

For a generation reared on video games, iPods and computers, you wouldn’t think an old school game like foosball would have an appeal with children between the ages of six and 18. Based on the reaction to DirectBuy of Providence’s donation of a brand new foosball table to the Boys & Girls Club of Warwick, the game is still a hit with today’s youth—and their parents.

Made by one of the finest foosball manufacturers, the regulation-size foosball table retails for around $600. DirectBuy of Providence Owner Heng Meas delivered the table to the Boys & Girls Club of Warwick’s Norwood branch, located at 42 Frederick Street in Warwick.

“To us, being a member of the Warwick and greater Providence business community also means being a part of the community in general, just like our members,” said Meas. “So when we make a donation to a place like the Boys & Girls Club, we’re not only helping out a great cause, but one that probably benefits our members, their families and their friends and neighbors, and that’s always worthwhile.”

The Boys & Girls Club of Warwick is a non-profit organization that depends on the generosity and financial support of the community to help it fulfill its commitment to enriching the lives of individuals, strengthening families and building inclusive communities.  The Boys & Girls Club’s mission is provide appropriate and diversified programs and activities that serve to attract and hold area youth to the Club, providing an environment that teaches children the skills needed to build positive lives, attitudes and behaviors.

Fall projects come in threes

October 15, 2008 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

For many out there, the three F’s of fall include: football, foliage and fixing up your home for the winter. Unfortunately, the third F—fixing up your home—can get in the way of you enjoying the first two. DirectBuy, the leading members-only showroom and home design center, offers up three fall fix-up projects that you can take on in fairly short order but with some serious upside in terms of prevention and potential cost savings.

Cleaning your gutters – The idea of a gutter is to channel water runoff away you’re your home and, as importantly, your home’s foundation. Obstruction in your gutters funnels that water down the side of your house, by windows and doors and that can cause some serious erosion and damaging effects. A fall cleanup of your gutters can save you some serious $$$ down the road. While some will attempt cleaning their gutters by climbing up on their roof with a hose, we recommend using a ladder to reach your gutters. With a simple gutter scoop and garden hose, you should be able to easily clear obstruction. Remember, if you have to stand on the top two steps of a ladder to reach the top, it’s too short and you need a longer ladder.

Install thermo pane windows – As the temperature outside starts to drop, you’ll be looking to turn the thermostat on inside your home. By installing thermo pane windows—or multi-pane—you can dramatically reduce your heating costs. Thermo pane windows can have R-values of up to nine (R-value is measure of thermal resistance used in the building industry; the higher the R-value, the better the insulation). On the contrary, a typical single-pane window has an R-value of 1. So, by merely switching from single pane to thermo pane windows, you’re improving your windows efficiency dramatically.

Install tank-less water heaters – When you’re doing dishes, washing your hands or taking a shower, how long do you have to wait for the hot water? Tank-less water heaters, which can be installed at individual faucets, give you immediate hot water as opposed to continuously reheating stored water. That saves on your water bill and your energy bill.

“The beauty of most fall projects is that, for the most part, they are not huge undertakings but the benefits can be plentiful. The key is planning and prioritizing what’s important to your home and your household. Simply by creating a list of three things you want to do this fall, you can still make a difference in your home without overwhelming yourself with a long laundry list of projects to take on,” said Sara Shragal, of DirectBuy.

DirectBuy offers nearly everything you need for your fall fix-up projects—windows, water heaters, and more—at wholesale prices direct from the manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. In addition, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and designers, so if a fall fix-up project is a bit out of your skill level or you don’t have the time, you have professionals at your service who can get the job done and help get your home ready for the winter months.

DirectBuy of Buffalo offers “play” area for parents and kids.

October 15, 2008 //  by admin

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY…By purchasing directly from the manufacturer, DirectBuy members can not only save a lot of money, but enjoy the process as well. And while it can be a lot of fun to pick out your new kitchen, the new floors for your bathroom, it also requires your full attention. That’s a luxury members with children don’t always have. That’s why DirectBuy of Buffalo, the leading members-only showroom and home design centers that offer merchandise at manufacturer-direct prices, developed a “Kids Zone” area in their showroom so parents can focus on the task at hand and kids can enjoy the DirectBuy experience, too.

Though not a supervised area, the newly refurbished Kids Zone features a number of things to keep school-age children occupied and entertained. That includes a flat-screen television with video games to play from the comfort of “mini” recliners; as well as brand new tables and chairs. Kids Zone also features a wall painted with blackboard paint so kids can actually draw on the walls without fear of punishment. In addition, DirectBuy of Buffalo staff recently supplied the Kids Zone with an assortment of games and toys; Barbies and G.I. Joes.

“Let’s face it, most kids would rather go to the dentist than watch their parents shop for their next home improvement project. By the same token, it’s difficult for members with children to get the most out of the experience and do the research they need to do if they’re concerned about the kids getting fidgety. The Kids Zone gives children of DirectBuy members a place to play games, watch TV or even make new friends with other members’ kids while the grown-ups have their ‘fun’,” said Mark Klinger, owner of DirectBuy of Buffalo.

Creating fun things to do for children is nothing new for DirectBuy. DirectBuy franchises across North America regularly donate equipment to youth organizations like Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs and children’s hospitals. Most recently, DirectBuy of Buffalo donated a foosball table, a $600 retail value per table, to the William C. Baird Boys & Girls Clubhouse in Buffalo.

“Because we are entrenched in the community, we have an even greater incentive to make this a one-of-a-kind, unique shopping experience because many of the members are our friends, neighbors, even relatives,” said Klinger. “Upgrading the Kids Zone and donations to the Boys and Girls Club and other organizations are just an extension of that philosophy.”

DirectBuy showrooms offer members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by purchasing wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. In addition, DirectBuy boasts a team of designers to help members with their purchases and gives them access to a roster of hand-selected contractors to expedite those projects.

DirectBuy of Boston South provides one-stop shopping solution for green building materials and appliances.

October 15, 2008 //  by admin

ROCKLAND, MA…There’s a misconception among many consumers that buying “green” refers strictly to products made of natural materials. While that’s part of the equation, there’s much more to it. Like appliances and lighting that last longer and use less power to run. Or plumbing that requires less water. At DirectBuy of Boston South, members not only have the opportunity to purchase the full spectrum of green products under one roof, but they also can save some “green” buy paying manufacturer-direct prices.

Some of the green products available to DirectBuy members include:

  • Faucets and plumbing fixtures that offer low consumption
  •  Natural cork flooring and underlayments
  •  Flooring made of renewable natural bamboo
  •  Lighting and ceiling fans with Energy Star ratings
  •  Energy Star compliant kitchen appliances, washers and dryers
  •  Cabinets treated with low-voc, LEED-compliant stains
  •  Bedroom, dining room, living furniture manufactured by members of the Sustainable Furniture Council; many of these pieces are made from natural fibers, use eco-friendly foam and contain organic, halogen-free fire retardants.

“Consumers are always being encouraged to make ‘greener’ purchases, but there’s no real road map as to where to make these purchases and whether or not what they do buy is green,” said John Massaria, owner of DirectBuy of Boston South. “The green products our members can buy through DirectBuy have been rated by recognized authorities like Energy Star, LEED and the Sustainable Furniture Council, so you know the green purchase you’re making is part of the solution.”

Energy Star ratings refer to the U.S.-government backed program ranking the energy efficiency of products. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a voluntary green building rating system, which is a consensus-based national standard for developing high-performance sustainable buildings. The Sustainable Furniture Council is a non-profit balanced coalition of manufacturers, retailers and consumers offering a public tagging program to identify good “green” choices.

“We all know we should be making greener purchases, particularly when it comes to products we use in our everyday lives like lighting and appliances. Unfortunately, making those wiser choices can be quite costly. By making all these green options available at DirectBuy, we give our members the choice to save money and valuable natural resources,” said Massaria.

Since 1971, DirectBuy has helped consumers enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products, and accessories, by providing an avenue to purchase directly from the manufacturer. DirectBuy of Boston South, conveniently located at 11A Commerce Road in Rockland, Massachusetts, offers consumers a comfortable, welcoming setting where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

Megan Taylor celebrates 10 years with DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver

October 9, 2008 //  by admin

VANCOUVER, COQUITLAM, VICTORIA, AND OKANAGAN, BC…

In 1997, two lifelong friends, Peter Ruetz and Steve Pippy, decided to buy purchased DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver, the leading members-only showroom and home design center that offers merchandise at manufacturer-direct prices. Not too long after that, they hired Megan Taylor work in their reception area. So celebrating Megan’s 10-year anniversary with DirectBuy takes on an added significance.

“Megan’s 10-year anniversary means a lot to us for many reasons. For starters, being in business for 10 years doing anything says something in itself, but to provide enough challenges and opportunity for growth for your employees to want to stay that long says quite a bit about DirectBuy,” said Peter Ruetz, co-owner of DirectBuy of Greater Vancouver. “Megan’s been a wonderful addition to our company from her first day until now. Frankly, it’s impossible for me to think of this place without her here.”

Originally hired as a receptionist, Taylor quickly became a jack-of-all trades, helping customers place orders and even working in shipping and receiving. That versatility paid off and she was promoted to service manager, a position she’s held for the past seven years.

A resident of Pitt Meadows, Taylor worked in the medical field prior to her DirectBuy days and holds a medical office assistant’s certification from Douglas College. During her time at DirectBuy, she’s won Corporate’s Ultimate Service Star and attended The Summit conference for DirectBuy’s superior performers.

Said Taylor,“DirectBuy has been a wonderful place to work these past 10 years. What amazes me that even after 10 years, I still learn so much about furniture and the business itself. Another benefit is that there are members I’ve known since my first day until now. I’ve seen them come in and buy wedding invitations, then baby furniture and so on. Plus, Peter and Steve are just amazing people to work for. They’re really more like my family.”

Since 1971, DirectBuy franchises have offered members the opportunity to enjoy enormous savings on home furnishings, home improvement items, entertainment and outdoor products and accessories by buying wholesale, directly from the manufacturer. With four convenient locations in the greater Vancouver area (Victoria, Vancouver, Coquitlam, and Kelowna), consumers can enjoy a comfortable, country-club setting, where they finally have the financial control of buying direct.

L&W Investigations, the foremost private investigations firm specializing in insurance claims, recently started working with Turner Bros. LLC to be the Oklahoma City-based company’s vendor for workers comp investigations across the United States.

Turner Bros. specializes in transportation and crane and rigging equipment. Serving 48 states, Turner Bros.’ area of expertise is in running and servicing 50-650 ton cranes, with heights up to 430 feet.

In business for more than 60 years, Turner Bros. operates five truck terminals, each equipped with trucks and trailers with individual carrying capacities ranging to 225 tons. The fleet, consisting of both company-owned and lease equipment, is capable of transporting a wide range of cargoes, including equipment with special size or weight requirements.

“Turner Bros. is a very welcome addition to our roster of clients,” said Neal Lyons, chairman and CEO of L&W Investigations. “With our network of investigations territories across the U.S. and Canada, as well as the Hawaiian Islands and Puerto Rico, we have the bandwidth to serve a national client the size of Turner Bros. while maintaining a very strong presence in each individual market. That’s a combination very few investigations firms can offer.”

L&W Investigations is not your typical private investigations firm because it works exclusively on workers compensation, disability, liability, auto and property claims for organizations ranging from insurance companies to third-party administrators, self-insured companies to law firms and municipalities.

L&W employs seasoned investigators who specialize in investigating insurance cases (or claims). All L&W investigators go through extensive training and have access to the most state-of-the-art surveillance equipment. L&W’s service offerings include: surveillance; statements; activity/disability checks; asset/background investigations; and medical audits/clinic inspections.
