Plymouth South Student Council members win Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac’s “Driven Student” award for February.

February 24, 2009 //  by admin

PLYMOUTH, MA…

Not every student has the drive it takes to run for political office. Particularly when that office cuts into homework, afternoon and evening jobs and activities, down time and even sleep. For their commitment to their classmates, their school and the community in which they live, Plymouth South’s Student Council members received Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac “Driven Student” award for the month of February.

To help celebrate this accomplishment, Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac treated several members of the Plymouth South High School Student Council to a pizza party. Those taking part included: Danielle Ketterer, Jessica Chandler, Hillary O’Rourke, Monica Joyce, Amanda Tanis, Patty Manning, Ashley Grylls, Rachel Simmons, Krissy Harris, Brianna Maiuri, Melanie Dorn, Haley Holmes, Emily Richard, Jackie Davies, Lauren Hoar, Jill Carter, Adam McGarry, Brian Kessel and Colin McGinnis.

“Members of our Student Council do a lot more than just attend meetings,”said Ann Wolf, faculty adviser to the Student Council. “Beyond representing their fellow students at Plymouth School Committee, they serve on screening committees, present leadership workshops at the regional and state level, annually participate in the Walk for Hunger and this year are collecting children’s books as part of the State’s literacy project.”

Adds Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac President Jeff Tracy, “Being a high school student is tough enough without adding anything else to your plate. The Student Council members gladly give up their time to not only represent their fellow students, but make their school and community a better place. For that, they are most deserving of this month’s ‘Driven Student’ award.”

Tracy Chevrolet Cadillac’s Driven Student program recognizes Plymouth high school students for their performance and achievements in and out of the classroom. Awarded on a monthly basis, recipients are selected by faculty and advisors at the student’s given school.

Counting Sheep? Try Counting Threads…

February 22, 2009 //  by admin

MERRILLVILLE, IN…

There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep. If you’re trying to remember the last time you had one, it may be time to evaluate your sleeping space. Could it be your mattress? Maybe. Yet according to DirectBuy, the leading home improvement and furnishings club with direct insider prices, the real culprit might be your sheets.

“Linens are one of the most important parts of your bedding ensemble, yet it’s the last thing people will look to replace when it comes to improving the quality of their sleep,” said Sara Shragal, of DirectBuy. “So, instead of shelling out hundreds, even thousands on new mattresses, duvets and comforters, people really ought to be looking at an upgrade of their linens. And when it comes to linens, the higher the thread count, the higher the quality.”

Thread count is the number of threads per square inch of fabric. Quality linen begins at 180 threads per square inch. The higher the thread count, the softer the feel of the sheet and the more pill resistant it will be.

Fiber content is the next item to consider when choosing bed linens. Sheets are usually made of cotton, polyester/cotton blends, or silk.  Cotton is often chosen because it’s a natural fabric and feels cooler and softer to the touch. Blends of polyester and cotton are popular because they are more wrinkle-resistant.

Yet the softest and most luxurious of all bed linens, silk, is surprisingly also the strongest. And, it’s naturally hypoallergenic.  In addition, silk sheets provide comfort year round. In the summer, silk keeps the moisture from your body, and in the winter it gently forms to your body eliminating air pockets and holding in your body heat.

Besides thread count and fabric type, you should also consider the weave of the fabric. A standard weave is alternating one stitch over one another. A sateen weave has a stitch of four over, one under, placing the most threads on the surface, making it soft, though slightly less durable than other weaves. A pinpoint weave is two over and one under. It is more durable than the standard weave, but not as soft as sateen. A jacquard weave means a design, such as stripes, is woven into the fabric.

“It might seem like a lot of details to consider when selecting something as commonplace as your bed sheets, but it can make an unbelievable difference in the quality and quantity of sleep you get every night,” adds Shragal.

In addition to bedding, DirectBuy offers everything from mattresses to comforters and duvets to complete bedroom sets at prices direct from the manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. If you need assistance in selecting items in recreating your bedroom, DirectBuy employs product specialists and designers, who are at your service.

Groomathon to benefit Buffalo Humane…DirectBuy of Buffalo, Cheektowaga, to host pet grooming event on Saturday, Mar. 21

February 20, 2009 //  by admin

CHEEKTOWAGA, NY…

On Saturday, March 21, it will truly be a dog’s day at DirectBuy of Buffalo, located less than a mile from the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport at 4950 Genesee Street in Cheektowaga. At that time, the Park ‘N Bark van will be at the 4950 Genesee Street location to offer grooming services for the pets of DirectBuy members and the general public. All proceeds from the event will go to Buffalo Humane.

“Winter months are kind of a tough time for keeping your pets clean. You don’t want to wash them outside and unless you’ve got a dedicated area in your house for cleaning your pet, it means using one of your tubs or sinks,” said Mark Klinger, owner of DirectBuy of Buffalo. “By hosting this event, we’re providing a service for our pet-owning members and pet owners from the general public and we are raising money for a very worthy cause, Buffalo Humane.”

The pet-grooming event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as the Park ‘N Bark van will be in the rear of DirectBuy of Buffalo’s parking lot. While there is no charge to have your pets groomed, the recommended donation is $50-$100. One hundred percent of that money will be donated to Buffalo Humane (www.buffalohumane.org).

“We’re pet groomers by trade, but the reality is we’re pet lovers, too. An event like this not only gives us a chance to showcase our services while providing a nice service for fellow pet lovers, but it also raises awareness to the good work Buffalo Humane does — and you can’t put a price tag on that,” said Kacie Zglinicki, owner of Park ‘N Bark.

In addition to the Groomathon, Buffalo Humane will be showcasing pets for adoption between 1 pm and 3 pm. For more information on pet adoption, please contact Buffalo Humane at 716-862-9183.

To arrange for the grooming of your pet and to participate in this event, please call Park ‘N Bark Mobile Pet Grooming, 716-866-5525.

No recession on love – Internet dating executives report increased revenues and membership numbers

February 19, 2009 //  by admin

NEW YORK, NY

When members of the Internet Dating Executive Alliance (IDEA) met last month at the Miami Internet Dating Conference (InternetDatingConference.com) the economy was a popular topic of discussion. Yet unlike the doom and gloom you might hear at conferences for any other industry, much of the talk centered on how numbers across the board are holding or are up for Internet dating sites– in spite of the economy.

Hitwise Competitive Intelligence reports that the Internet dating industry gained 12 percent more site visits in 2008 over 2007.  The peak period for Internet dating sites is November through Valentine’s Day each year.  Hitwise reports that the top 100 dating sites gained two percent more site visits for the three-month period of November 2007 to January 2008 versus November 2008 to January 2009.  Free dating sites gained 55 percent more visits in the same period.

For example:

●        Plentyoffish.com – the top ranking free dating site – U.S. traffic is up 33% since August; two billion monthly page views.

●        Match.com – 22% more paying memberships in December 2008 vs. December 2007

●        PerfectMatch.com – Q4  2008 revenues increased 42% over the prior quarter.

●        WorldSingles.com – network of niche dating services that includes Arablounge.com, EligibleGreeks.com and IranianPersonals.com – 10% increase in sales from Q4 2008 compared to Q4 2007.

●        TogetherChrisitan.com – “paying sign-ups” increased 23.8% from August 2008 to January 2009.

●        Meet Market Adventures – activity-based social networking site – up more than 60% since August 2008, both in new member sign-ups and attendance for the site’s 200+ events.

●        WhiteLabelDating.com – vast network of niche dating brands – 23.25% increase in site traffic from August 2008 to present; 76.3% increase in membership over the last two months; January 2009 revenue 73.48% higher than August 2008.

●        EasyDate.biz – BeNaughty.com and 200+ dating brands – revenue is up 107% in 2008.  Revenue rose 18% from Q3 to Q4 2008.

●        SelectAlternatives.com – a network of 24 local city dating sites offered via alternative weekly newspapers – from August, 2008 to Jan. 2008; 3% increase in membership revenues, 9% increase in total unique visitors and 10% increase in total visits.

“If there’s one silver lining of a difficult economy it’s that it makes people take a step back and look at their lives. Many come to the realization they don’t want to go through life alone. Internet dating sites give them a viable and affordable way to find that special somebody,” said Mark Brooks, president of the Internet Dating Executive Alliance.

About The Internet Dating Executive Alliance (IDEA)

IDEA (www.internetdatingexecutivealliance.com) was formed by the editor of OnlinePersonalsWatch.com to help iDating executives talk directly with each other and share their thoughts on how to collectively improve the Internet dating industry. IDEA’s membership, by invitation only, consists of executives from a veritable who’s who in the international Internet dating world: eHarmony, Match, Plentyoffish, The Right One and Yahoo Personals. There are 226 members in all, over half of which are C-level or Founder level executives.

Why hockey is best viewed from a “man cave”…

February 16, 2009 //  by admin

VANCOUVER, COQUITLAM, VICTORIA, AND OKANAGAN, BC…

In your dad’s day, the stereotypical man’s domain, or “man cave,” was the workshop in the garage. Today, the man cave is often the basement den or office. When it’s time to watch the Canucks and the resident “caveman” wants to entertain other cavemen and their better halves, he’ll likely realize that his sanctuary might need a little upgrading. DirectBuy, the leading members-only showroom and home design center, has some pointers for making your man cave guest-friendly for the regular season and upcoming NHL playoffs.

“While being able to get away from the rest of the house and watch a game in peace may have been the genesis of the man cave, what might not have been taken into consideration initially was the desire to someday invite others to watch the game with you. And setting up a space fit for entertaining guests is something a lot of men may want some assistance with,” said Jade Allen, owner of DirectBuy of Vancouver.

So what items might today’s cave-gent need to complete the perfect indoor tailgate party?

  • Kegerator – a man-cave essential for a beer-drinking crowd
  •  Wide Screen TV with HD; surround sound speakers optional but highly desirable
  •  Sectional sofa to accommodate multiple visitors; reclining chair with cup holders for the host.
  •  Full-size built-in bar area or free-standing, mobile bar station
  • Tile or wood flooring that’s particularly resilient to potential spillage
  •  Pool table, air hockey or foosball for between-periods recreation
  •  Mini-kitchen with microwave to reheat buffalo wings.
  •  Home gym equipment—e.g. treadmill, elliptical—to work off the excess calories consumed during man cave weekend marathon.

DirectBuy offers nearly everything you need to create the perfect man cave no matter what your favorite sport might be at prices direct from manufacturers and their authorized suppliers. If you know what you want but don’t know how to pull it all together, DirectBuy also employs product specialists and professional designers well versed in the art of designing the perfect recreational space, while keeping you on budget.
