Older job seeker gets early holiday gift – a Makeover from South Shore providers

When it comes to finding a new job after 50, times have changed. Stellar credentials and years of experience get you so far in the job market. Competition with younger counterparts is tough and it takes more than great networking to land a job.

Many older job seekers are looking to “level the playing field” with their younger competitors and one of the ways they are doing so is by re-inventing themselves.

South Shore Skin Center of Plymouth and Cohasset collaborated with the Center for Progressive Dentistry of Duxbury; Eclipxe Hair Salon of Norwell, Holly Kouvo of Fitting Fitness In of Stow, MA and Coach DQ, Dawn Quesnel, a career life coach and host of Career Life Balance Radio, and held a Makeover Contest for women and men over 50 who had been downsized.

Carol Hedman, 63, of Cohasset has been selected as the winner of the Makeover Contest. Ms. Hedman had been working for a medical provider and held a second job with a dental provider and was downsized from both South Shore companies. After looking for work for several months, she thought she was about to receive a job offer from a Boston firm. Unfortunately, another applicant, who is 30 years her junior, got the job. Ms. Hedman then decided to enter the contest.

As the contest winner, Ms. Hedman will receive:

· New Haircut/Style

· A Fitness Consultation

· Career and Life Coaching Services

According to Ms. Hedman, “Feeling good about your appearance makes you confident and that’s important. I’m very excited about my makeover. I’m setting the foundation of what’s ahead…This next chapter and what’s to come.”

The Makeover Contest was held based on the success of a previous makeover on Scituate resident Dave Flanagan, 54. Mr. Flanagan underwent a full makeover which included Botox Cosmetic treatments to smooth forehead wrinkles and Sculptra for the deep lines around his mouth. He had his teeth whitened and an updated haircut. He also met with a Fitness Trainer who educated him about how fitness and nutrition would keep him at the top of his game, and a Career Life Coach to help him obtain his goals. The makeover worked and shortly after, Dave was happy to report he was back at work.

Dave’s success inspired South Shore Skin Center to hold a Makeover Contest to help other seniors who may have been faced with “ageism” in the job market.

OCES encourages folks to “Be a Santa to a Senior”

Old Colony Elder Services (OCES), a private, non-profit Aging Services Access Point (ASAP) that serves Plymouth county as well as the towns of Avon, Easton and Stoughton, is encouraging the general public to participate in the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program by providing a gift to a senior in need.

Old Colony Elder Services, working in conjunction with the “Be a Santa to a Senior” program sponsor Home Instead Senior Care, has identified approximately 170 isolated elders who otherwise would not receive a gift this holiday season.


Each senior in need is represented by an ornament with their “wish list” written on it.   The wish lists may include items such as postage stamps, clothing, a gift card to a grocery store, candy or other item. The ornaments adorn Christmas trees located at Duval’s Pharmacy at
571 Washington Street in Whitman. The program is running now through December 11th.

To be a “Santa to a Senior”, simply select an ornament from the Christmas tree at Duval’s and purchase a gift that is on that senior’s “wish list”.  Then, place the gift (unwrapped) with the ornament attached into the collection box at the pharmacy.


All the gifts will be collected by Home Instead Senior Care and a wrapping party will be held on December 15th.  Representatives from Home Instead Senior Care and OCES will help wrap and distribute the gifts to the seniors.
Last year, the program delivered more than 350 gifts to seniors. According to Rich and Cherie Sasso, owners of the Home Instead Senior Care Plymouth County, “This program is a way that we can give back to our community by providing gifts to some of our most treasured residents. Our hope is that the presents also can help these seniors recapture some of the excitement of their childhood.”

Dreaming of a green Christmas

Bing Crosby had a white one. Elvis was blue. And while a “green” Christmas might not translate into song lyrics as well as those other colors, celebrating the holiday season in a greener, more environmentally friendly way is certainly desirable.   • Turn off your holiday lights and electronic decorations and devices when not in use. Even in standby mode these items can consume 15 percent of your household’s electricity.
  • Use real glasses and dishes instead of disposable ones for your holiday party. Also, go with cloth tablecloths instead of throwaways.
  • Send holiday e-cards online instead of mailing paper versions. Not only is this a more environmentally friendly approach, but you’ll also save a little change in postage. You can also create an online photo album yourself and circulate the link to family and friends to create that personal touch.
  • Give experiential presents. This is a good idea if you’re not sure what to get someone and fear your gift may simply be stored instead of used. By gifting your loved ones with horseback riding lessons, a massage, or even a gift certificate for a class at their local continuing education facility you’ll stand out among the crowd plus help everyone live a little greener.
  •  Re-use your grocery bags or posters from old magazines by decorating them for use as wrapping paper. If that’s a little too work-intensive, by performing a simple online search you can quickly purchase recycled wrapping paper that can be delivered to your home quickly.
  • Buy a real tree this year. Surprised we’re suggesting cutting down trees to stay green? Don’t be. Artificial trees are petroleum-based and non-biodegradable, and the manufacturing process includes metal and PVC derivatives, the by-products of which can cause harm to both humans and the environment. If you don’t have room for a full-size, farm-grown tree, buy a potted version that you can later plant in your garden and possibly re-use next year.
