Renowned Easton Hair Stylist Shares Fashion Week Tips on Latest Hairstyles for Fall

July 22, 2010 //  by admin

Internationally Renowned Stylist Edward Blum

New shoes, new clothes and a must-have new hairstyle for fall. Local salon owner and internationally recognized style and color expert Edward Blum shares the best back-to-school styles straight from the runways of Fall Fashion Week.

Edward Blum, who owns the prestigious Makeovers Salon & Spa of Easton with his wife Norah Blum, served on the Wella team for celebrity designer Donna Karan as they introduced the DKNY Fall 2010 collection during Fashion Week. Below, he shares tips on how to obtain easy, sophisticated runway hairstyles for fall:

Classy Ponytail – This timeless hairstyle should be worn low and softly off to the side to create a simple yet spectacular look this fall. To achieve this look, pull hair from a loose pony and slide it to the side of your choice. Hair length does not particularly matter, although for shorter hair using clip on extensions to achieve the best look is a must. You can also purchase a weft of hair from your local extension retailer to add extra fullness and length to the pony. To get more of a sophisticated look, wrap a small section of your hair around the hair tie.

Waffle Waves – This look is about a thick loose natural wave that is very complementary and feminine. Starting with damp hair add a small amount of styling gel all over. Gather and section your hair into 6 small parts. The front of your hair should be parted in the direction you would typically wear it. Braid each section, keeping it 4 to 5 inches away from the part. The key is keeping the braids very large. Smaller braids will create more of a crimped look. When hair is fully dry, disband and run fingers through entire head.

Organic Stone Inspired Color – To achieve the best possible color, these techniques should be performed by a professional. For blonds and cooler blonds, a multi-dimension balayage method would be ideal this fall. This means that your stylist designs and places multi-colored highlights and low lights to produce a granite or slate stone color effect. Thanks to Eva Scrivo and Wella Hair Color.

Side Braid – This will work with any size or shape of the braid. For more of an impact a very large loose braid works best. Plates woven from one side of the head bandaging the front of the hair is a popular choice. Braids will be everywhere this fall.

Short Haircuts – Very military inspired androgynous short hair pairs beautifully with today’s high fashion styles such as the tuxedo inspired look for women and blazers with high shoulder pads. This cut starts with a barber taper neckline, very short sides and the top being one length. Unlike last season, the asymmetrical bold and edgy look is fading quickly. This season, short cropped sides, and long top rounds the look. Hair can be worn slicked back or soft and forward as you like.

According to Edward Blum, “Most of the styles you’ll see this fall are very natural and easy to obtain. The emphasis is on chic, without a lot of fuss.”

Makeovers Salon + Spa’s Record Breaking Number of Prom “Do’s”

June 8, 2010 //  by admin

As owners of one of the largest salon and spas under one roof in Massachusetts, Edward and Norah Blum, internationally recognized, award-winning designers know they need a solid game plan for prom season.

This year, the number of prom hairstyle masterpieces created at the Blum’s Easton based Makeovers Salon & Spa topped every year previous – with more than 60 senior prom clients in one afternoon.

“Each year, we outdo ourselves with the sheer number of prom hair-dos that we create. The atmosphere in the salon on prom day is just electrified – it’s an amazing experience. We have a staff of 85, and half of our designers work on prom clients all day,” explained Blum.

Easton’s senior student body is comprised of more than 250 seniors. According to Blum, “Our salon caters to a large number of these students. The demand for stunning hairstyles is pretty significant and we’re able to easily meet that challenge year after year.”

Tayla Smith, a Senior Stylist at Makeovers noted, “The most popular prom hair style this year was the teased and curled ponytail. Almost every senior girl wanted a side swept, loose curl configuration reminiscent of the Red Carpet Events held this year. These styles are just breathtaking and the process is really something to see.”

Salon Owner & Internationally Recognized Designer Edward Blum Leads Color & Design Team for Donna Karan During Fashion Week

Massachusetts salon owner and internationally recognized industry expert in hair color, design and styling, Edward Blum, just returned from New York this week after working with the color and design team for fashion designer Donna Karan as she introduced her Fall 2010 collection during Fashion Week (February 11-18th).

Blum, who was a team colorist with the “dynamic duo” Christopher and Sonya Dove, was brought to New York’s Fashion Week by Wella Professionals as a colorist/stylist for Donna Karan’s models. Blum is co-owner of the prestigious Makeovers Salon & Spa, a state-of-the-art facility located in Easton with a staff of 80.  Known for his artistry and technical knowledge, Blum has been a hair stylist for 31 years and a salon owner for more than 21 years.  Makeovers Salon & Spa is his fourth salon and one of the largest salons and spas in Massachusetts.

“Donna Karan’s Fall collection has an emphasis on curves with gathered suiting, body hugging wraps and scarves.  Hair style and color is all about looking very natural and approachable yet at the same time, ultra chic and refined.  Any hint of brassiness in hair color is out.  To get the gorgeous, shiny, natural looking hair that the models are sporting is definitely an investment,” noted Blum.

Blum shared some of the fashion trends that will be seen this fall:

•       Hair color will be natural looking with glosses and glazes leading the way.  Hair styles will be sporty and slightly edgy.

•       Nails will be natural looking.  Gel nails and gel polishes will be all the rage.

•       Trends in body care will be bio-organic and very moisturizing.

According to Blum, “We’re really going to see a turn towards the natural and organic this fall and it will be reflected in hair style and make-up, even in spa treatments.”

Blum has worked alongside a number of greats over the years including Vidal Sassoon, Jon Louis David and Jaque Dessange. He trained with Alexandre de Paris and also served as the International Spokesperson and Market Leader for Wella Corporation for 15 years, providing hair design and styling for major hair shows in the U.S. and Europe.

He is a contributing writer to many professional beauty publications including Modern Salon Magazine, American Salon Magazine and Salon Today Magazine.  No stranger to the stars, Blum has been the stylist for “One Life to Live” soap opera’s Christian Alfonso and Judge Maria Lopez of the “Maria Lopez Show” as well as for Buena Vista Studios-Disney, New England Today, Boston Channel 5 and Channel 4.   He has won numerous awards and worked on many other stage, hair and fashion award shows over the last three decades.

On the local level, Blum holds the Northeast Cutting and Styling Championship title and his salon has been honored 15 times with First Place Reader’s Choice Award in all beauty categories.  Additionally, he frequently serves as a consultant to many cosmetology schools in New England.
